Amusingly, some time ago, lobsters became a required part of our Christmas decorations. This is because, not long after we got married and moved into our house (with very little furniture or anything else) we set up a tiny 3 foot fake (so badly fake) prelit tree in our then cavernous (it's a small house but with no furniture the rooms seemed quite large) living room. On an overturned milk crate if I remember correctly. And we didn't have a tree skirt or anything, or even appropriate fabric to use, but we did have this piece of dark background print fabric that had lobsters all over it (originating in another story I should probably write up for posterity) that we used for the 'tree skirt' instead. It was so hilariously out of place that we've used it every year since, regardless of the tree, decoration quality improvements, having an actually furnished home now, or the rise and fall of our financial state. It's just... The Christmas lobsters. So it shows up in other places as kind of a joke between us now. 16 years later, I'm about to dig out the lobsters again, and may have a mini figure to hide in his keyboard buttons a little closer to the actual holiday.

I know Lucy & Gunpowder probably use real trees. But i will forget to water a real tree and then the house will burn down.
So she will have to suck it up and appreciate my cheap fake tree.

in view of the fact that ghost stories used to be a traditional Christmas Thing, I propose that we who live in unfortunately Christonormative societies combat the appearance of plastic tinsel and prelit trees in autumn by practicing Halloween Creep
spooky season is October-January now; I don’t make the rules

A/N: this came to me while I was wrapping gifts in my living room at 1 AM. Merry Christmas & happy holidays to all :)
Content/warnings: college/modern! AU, fluff, R2L (roommates to lovers LOL), very very short
Pairing: Eren Jaeger x gn! Reader

The gold glow from the prelit tree of your living room acts as your light source as you carefully crease the wrapping paper embellished with cute little snowmen. Finals had just ended, so you and your roommate were enjoying the first few days of break winding down from the stress of the semester before going back home to your families for the holidays.
You’ve been sitting on the floor for a good hour, managing to get through a good portion of your gifts for your friends. Eren was in his room, probably sleeping— which works out, considering you need to wrap his present.
You place the last piece of tape on the flap to seal the gift. You grab a shiny bow that compliments your choice of gift wrap, meticulously removing the release paper. Getting adhesive on your finger tips was never any fun.
“The final touch,” you whisper.
You pinch the top of the bow, making sure it lines up exactly where it needs to be. It’s going to be perfect. Slowly, carefully, just a few more millimeters—
“Whatcha doin’?”
And now the bow was off center. Great.
“Jesus, ‘Ren. You scared the shit out of me.”
“Sorry.” You know he doesn’t actually mean it based on the lopsided smile he gives you as he plops down beside you, knee brushing yours as he situates himself. You have to fight the heat that threatens to rise up your neck, to swallow the sudden lump in your throat.
He grabs the box, shaking it precariously. “Who’s this for?”
You snatch the present out of his hands, shooting him a glare. Eren doesn’t seem to be fazed, doesn’t whither beneath the intensity of your stare. If anything, your annoyance just eggs him on further, to keep pressing your buttons. He reaches for the gift once again, to which you respond by raising your arm up, trying to move the gift out of arm’s reach. Eren takes it back easily, shaking it once again. You sigh.
“It’s yours. But if you keep shaking it like that, you’re not gonna have a present.”
“For me?” He blinks. He makes a show of bringing the gift up to eye level, inspecting it from all sides while scratching his chin. He has the audacity to look puzzled. “Hmm…”
“What?”
“It doesn’t look like what I asked for.”
You quirk an eyebrow. “Yeah? I’m pretty sure I know what’s in there, and I’m pretty sure it’s something you want.”
“Mmm…no, I don’t think so.”
“You don’t even know what’s in there!”
“You’re right,” he admits, placing the box underneath the Christmas tree. “I don’t, but I know it’s not the thing I want most.”
“And what would that be?”
He smiles, and you can see a mischievous glimmer in his emerald eyes that make your stomach drop and your heart rate pick up. Whether it’s out of fear or excitement, you’re not sure.
You’re bristle when he reaches behind you and grabs a bow.
“You see, the thing I want most is…” he gently places the bow on top of your head, hand traveling down to cup your cheek. His other hand rests on your collarbone and grazes your arm as he slides it down to intertwine his fingers with yours. You vaguely wonder if he can feel just how scorching hot your cheek is because of him. You also wonder if he notices how you tilt your head up, how your bring your face just an inch closer to his, how your breath hitches in your throat when you catch a glimpse of the small smile he gives before he brings his lips to meet yours.
“You.”
You’re not sure who pulls away first, but you’re both breathless and high off serotonin when you part. Eren rests his forehead against yours with a grin plastered on his tan face.
“You could’ve just asked to kiss me, you know.”
“Yeah, but it’s more fun this way.”
An idea pops into your mind. You mirror Eren’s earlier movements, placing a nice green ribbon on top of his head. You watch his brows furrow with confusion.
You let out a breathy laugh at his expression. “You still haven’t given me my present, you know?”

Sustainable During the Holidays
This time of year is full of hyper consumerism, but here are a few things I try to focus on to minimize my impact. Let me know if you have more ideas!!
1. Buy gifts people really want/need. I know sometimes this spoils the surprise, but it is better than giving someone another candle they will never burn. Gag gifts are funny for a moment, but usually that product goes straight into the trash.
2. Most wrapping paper is not recycleable as it is multilayered paper and plastic, so try using alternative wrappings. I still have a hoarde of it from before I thought of the consequences of it going to landfill. I am still working on using my backlog, but when I run out I plan to start using pages from magazines and newspapers. I have also seen people use dishtowels or small blankets as a wrapper which also are part of the gift!
3. Paper tape is a good product and will break down unlike plastic tape. And sometimes you can find it in cute patterns!
3. For decor, use what you have and if you need more, try to get it second hand or make it yourself. My first tree was a hand me down from my aunt (which I handed off to an uncle on the other side of the family when I decided I needed a prelit tree or no lights would ever be up). I have purchased 1 ornament new, but everything else has been DIY or hand-me-downs. My grandma and I actually made some pine cone ornaments with large pinecones, glitter spray paint, and wire. The pinecones are my favorite part of my tree now.
4. Ditch the disposables. If your family liked to use paper/plastic plates, try to steer them towards using reuseables instead. Volunteer to help do the dishes. If the host still wants to use disposables, try to opt for plates that are just paper with no coating or specifically say compostable.
5. You do not need more holiday clothes/jewelry. Trust me. You do not. Just wear the same great sweater every year. That is your look™

For Your Eyes Only | AJ & Bryce
With this being Bryce’s first Christmas home in what seemed to be forever, he was going all out. From baking cookies with his roommate, all the way to watching Christmas movies on Zoom with his sister, he felt some sort of peace this holiday season. But there was really only one person who he wanted to spend the holiday with, and that was his girlfriend. He knew the two were almost complete opposites when it came to the holiday season, and for good reason; she never got to experience a true, traditional holiday season — at least until now. Sneaking out of bed early, he pulled out the prelit tree that he had somehow managed to smuggle into the beach house. He wanted this to be a nice Christmas for her, and in his mind the first way to do that was to decorate this tree. In his mind, when he thought about it too much, he had been spending too much time with Ryan. He had just finished decorating the tree, putting the star on the top and beginning to clean up when he heard Amber-Jade coming down. “Why, good morning, sleeping beauty.” He greeted with a small chuckle. “Before you say anything, I know you’re not that big on the holiday’s, and normally I wouldn’t be either…but this is my first Christmas home in years and I refuse to let you spend it alone. So, I hope this pathetic looking tree brings you the upmost holiday cheer.” He babbled along, his words coming out in a joking manner. After he was done speaking, he walked over towards the redhead and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, bringing her in close as he leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss on her lips. “Merry Christmas, Amber-Jade.” @amberjade-rhodes

Quarantine, Day 281
December 18  So I just checked in on the laptop order I placed with Hewlett Packard on November 30, because it was supposed to be arriving like, right around now. I have a confirmation email regarding my purchase, but my order number does not bring up anything on their website. That is... not greeeaaaaat. HP has done me dirty in the past, but it's been at least a decade and I thought that they'd probably changed by now. So many things have changed in the past decade, right? I will have to call their customer service line tomorrow and see what the hell is going on. I have already been waiting weeks for my new computer, and I need it very much!  Today was a day full of decorating! We redid MIL's living room because she got a new chair for her desk. It's very handsome, leather and classic looking, and once we adjusted the lever that lets you tip back greater than 45 degrees, quite comfortable! But it wouldn't work with the rug, so we moved all the furniture, took out the rug, moved all the stuff in the dining room to gank that rug, and put that rug in the living room, then put everything back. It does look very nice. We also tried to get a Christmas tree, but the combination of demand, blight, 2008 recession and it being a little too close to Christmas foiled our ambitions. We did find a table-size live dwarf spruce at the nursery, so Kiddo has that in his room, lavishly decorated. Its name is Joe. (My suggestions, Bruce the Spruce, Untitled Spruce Game, and Spruce Goose, were met only with eyerolls.)  Without a tree, we had to dig out the old prelit artificial tree from the storeroom and try to whip it into shape. It looked pretty rough even after I spent time rearranging and fluffing all the branches, but with a zillion ornaments on it and the lights plugged in, it turned out all right. We also put all Nana's presents under it, so now it looks Christmassy indeed. Neither Tanika nor Victoria seem to have noticed it yet, which is good because a single cat attack could send the whole thing crashing down. That is the good part of having senior cats, I suppose. I did put the two poinsettias up very high because Victoria has become a plant eater and those are very poisonous. Tomorrow night we're going to have a fire in the fireplace and it's going to become downright picturesque in here!

Today's outing was to the nursery, which was outdoors, to the drugstore for Husband's meds, and to the hardware store. Speed running an Ace Hardware is pretty easy because the rows are well marked, and we spent considerably more time standing in a well spaced line than actually collecting our birdseed, dustpan, sink drain cover, extension cord, and toilet bowl cleaner. (It's amazing what you can find at the hardware store!) Even the little town where MIL lives has finally bowed to the inevitability of masking, so the trip wasn't really that fraught, but I'm just as glad it was short. MIL and I are going to be trying to give each other manicures here in a couple days, but I think we're stuck just commiserating about the state of our hair for awhile. We've both had hair appointments during quarantine, but not during an upswing like this. I think maybe it's easier to wait knowing that there is a vaccine (Moderna's vaccine got approved today, yay!) and that we won't always have to live like this.  Oh, one thing from yesterday that I forgot to talk about was the grandfather clock. Back in the early eighties, when Husband was just a baby, FIL put together a grandfather clock from a kit, basically, but a really high grade kit that turned out heirloom quality stuff if the woodworker was skilled. He did a good job and it has run for nearly forty years now, but it got damaged being moved in and out during the repairs to MIL’s house. She was distraught, this year of all years especially, and the van line sent a clock repair person to fix it. He was there when we arrived last night, so I got to see the guts of a grandfather clock for the first time and learn a little about how they work. It’s nice to see people who are passionate about their jobs, and this guy definitely was. He did a really nice job and put his business card inside the clock body so we would not lose it. Now as I sit here the clock chimes every fifteen minutes like it has every time I’ve ever been here, and it’s very comforting.

My family has been trying for 5 years to get my mom to get a new Christmas tree (we can't have a real tree because I'm allergic). Today after struggling to put together our tree, my sister said something about getting a new tree that would be easier to haul and put together and my mom immediately was like "Well, if you guys want to go get a new one (and my sister offered to help pay for it), go ahead." So now we have a new prelit tree.

Tree drama this year - lighting challenges on both prelit artificial trees. On this tree in the living room we lost the middle strand and had to replace ad hoc. Can't really tell in person, but the camera tells our secret! Also it seems line this tree is leaning a bit - now THAT problem we need to fix before the cats tip it over. Maybe all of the problems will finally drive us to get fresh trees starting next year - it's been awhile, but we are literally 10 minutes away from multiple gorgeous tree farms, so why not? On a positive note, I do like my aesthetic choice to use only pastel ornaments on this tree this year
