You’d never tasted another.

He’d never abide by it.

You’re delicate, like a flower magically preserved at the peak of its bloom just moments before it began to wither, and you essentially were that; frozen at your most enchanting point in your life, at an age where your beauty prevails and your kindness holds true, even after all this time, frozen in the moment where all your memories of being human were still occupied only with days of warm harvest and folk music. 

You’re too sweet to hunt down your own prey, to sink your teeth into another’s flesh and steal their life away, too much of a bleeding-heart and thoughtful of nature to kill a living thing. 

The others had never been offered to take their fill from the flesh of their maker, all those gifted his eternity in the last millennium had to learn to take for themselves, to lurk in the shadows until something came within their purview to be eaten. From the moment they took in a breath and filled their lungs with the air of their new lives, the others had been taught to sink or swim when it comes to finding a substantial meal.

But not you.

It’s all a part of an act; find one person and charm them with a little music, maybe even a little sweet-talking from a voice that’s unnatural, from a throat that pronounces words with a honeyed southern accent that’s enunciated a little too much, that muscles through the twang with more difficulty than someone truly from the South should experience. Then, it’s finding another  — maybe even a third  — and forgoing his tricks and charm by pouncing immediately because he’s run out of patience for the night and is dying to get back home to you. He practically gorges himself, two or more bodies in a singular night, making sure there’s enough of him to be shared, to be passed on like a sacred communion and you’re the only devotee. 

His boots tread in the dirt as he walks through the trees with a casualness that remains undeterred. The crickets don’t sing, the cicadas don’t scream, all is silent because the creatures of the forest know there’s something unnatural and unbegotten of this land among them. He comes to you, making his way up the porch steps where you’re already waiting for him with sweet looks and soft touches, tucking yourself into him like you’re trying to hide away from the rest of the world. He’ll laugh at you teasingly, like he does every night, simultaneously pulling you tightly to him, blood-soaked clothes and all, and he’ll take you back inside to feed you. 

Your hands hold onto his shirt, the ruined fabric balled up in your gentle hands as you cling to him, your fangs digging into the now piping hot skin of his neck, right in the hollow of his throat where his false pulse throbs beneath the skin. Your fangs are still small, almost cute despite your eternal age nearly being the same as his own. You lack the viciousness of his own gaping maw when he’s at his hungriest and his most monstrous, but then again you’ve never needed nor wanted to be monstrous, and he’s always seen to it in the centuries you’ve been by his side that you’ve never gone hungry enough to become so.

You sup from him, taking soft gentle pulls because you’ve never been a greedy feeder, the blood no longer tasting of those he took it from earlier in the night, but now flavored with something distinctly him, something ancient and reminiscent of rolling green fields. A hand holds the back of your head, cradling it, his fingers no longer clawed or horrific gently curling into your hair, and the other is clutching you so you’re chest to chest, a hefty forearm still covered in flaking blood curled heavy around your waist like an anchor. Being fed from should hurt, it should fill him with agony like it does his prey, but instead it vitalizes him, creates something sacred between the two of you that only your shared appetites know.

“That’s it my darlin’,” his words are thickly drawled from a satisfied mouth, the soft croon of a creature that’s taken its own fill. The broguish intonation and lilt slips from his lips like honey, an authenticity to his true self that he shares with you and you alone; his most devoted creation. “Drink your fill, take what’cha need.”

You drink until you’re full, until there’s a gentle warmth to your cheeks, making them all pretty n’ pink like they were when you still walked in the sun and dozed in the wheatgrass. You pull away and lock eyes with him, yours still holding a gentleness that not even time spent as a mythified creature living only in shadow could get rid of. He smiles at you, lips pulling into a position that only feels right when in your presence, pulling into creases that were mapped out and created by a happy life hundreds of years ago, when his people still lived and breathed with the land as one. You smile back, a familiar expression, one that he sees in his mind even when his eyes are closed, and one that he’ll still see even when his eternity comes to an end. 

He pulls you in for a kiss because he knows that’s what you want.

The mind of everyone he’s ever introduced to the night lives in his own— and in yours too, buzzing around like bees in a hive, always moving, never silent. But yours is by far the one he cherishes the most, the one he listens to and attunes his own mind to the most, because you are his, and have been since both his ancestors and yours settled in the Éire long before either of you were ever thought of. 

It’s a soft and sweet kiss, the taste of metal on both your tongues but neither of you mind. One of your hands comes up to the side of his head, fingers weaving into messy, sweat-slicked hair, the chill of a ring matching his own a balm to his sticky skin, plagued by the heat of a humid southern summer night. His eyes meet yours as you pull away, blue and soft as the oceans by the cliffs, the red having bled away from them some time ago when his hunt ended.

He shifts you into his lap, his grip reaffirming itself to your body, keeping you snug and safe, to try and meld you two together into one physically, like you already are mentally and spiritually. Two forsaken souls, bound together for all time in a world where one cannot exist without the other, and in a world where you’ve been forgotten long ago by those you once held near and dear, as well as those who now reside in the otherworld entirely. 

Skin to skin, your head drops to his own, both your eyes falling shut as you simply feel one another, basking in your shared love and thoughts, knowing that you both seek the same comfort in the other, the comfort that only someone who loves you irrevocably can provide.

Your inhale is his exhale, keeping it so your entire being is only composed of things essentially him, so that your body is nourished of his and his alone. He made you this way, after all; when he sunk his newfound teeth into your delicate flesh and fed until your pulse waned and your skin chilled, and even still until your eyes opened wide with all the things you could now see so clearly, and your lungs sucked in a breath that was crisp with everything the air of the day held. You had been his first meal under a life that could only exist in the pale moonlight of the night, and he had been your first and your only, even now.

A few more kisses are shared, peppered softly against one another's skin like whispers on the wind hushing through the leaves of the trees.

Since you don't see many edits here, and i am a dumbass in editing, could you make a tutorial on it? Like: what apps should we use, what should or shouldn't do, devices, etc. Since i personally worship your editing prowess, i couldn't help myself but ask for your guidance sensei. 🙇‍♀️

I don't use a "special device" to make my edits, just a computer which can run a videoediting software and Wallpaper Engine correctly (in my case it's an Apple Mac Pro 4,1 from 2009 with upgraded RAM and GPU, and also with Windows 10 installed on it, but that's not important). My server pc build out of my spare parts, and it's serves as a network bridge, and a file storge (like a NAS, or something) to store my personal files, like the assets for the edits on HPP. The way I make my edits, is a different story. I like to put the charaters in different scenarios to make the edit more enjoyable. I usually chose one image from my pre-granarated ones, or I use (if i see a, as i call an edit "suspicious" image here on Tumblr or X) an image from my "Likes", or if I can't find any which is good for the scanario in my head I generate one using PixAI's Ebora Pony XL AI model. Than if I have an image, I put together a static version of the edit in Paint.NET (PaintdotNET). Here I cut down the unnecessary and the broken (weirdly generated hands, .etc) parts of the image, and I remove the background if I'd like to use a different one. Than I chose a stethoscope png what are suitable for the edit, but I recently using the hand with stethoscope one which you can see in my recent edits. I also make some barely visble changes to the main image and the stething image. If it's done, and looks good I save them (the base image, the background, and the steting png separately) in a folder. After that it's time to "animate" the edit, which is just using the Wallpaper Engine's built in Shake effect, if that part is done, I record the animated soundless edit using OBS, which is usually a 5-6 minutes raw mp4 file. Than I put the raw recording into the video editor which is my case is the Wondershare Filmora X. I chose one of the heartbeat and bearthing audios from my server (if it's needed I modify it a bit in Audacity), and speed them up to mach with the animation. I make the breathing way quieter to have the heartbeat in focus, also i duplicate the hb sound to make a stereo effect, which means the I make the left side a bit louder and add more bass to it than the right side, which make a really good heart pulse effect (ROLL CREDITS). Also in here I add some video effects, cut down the unnecessary parts, I cut down the video to 2 minutes to become uploadable for X, than it's time to export it. After I exported the final edit, i check it for mistakes and I fix them if i find any, and the fixed version gonna be uploaded to Tumblr and X. This whole process is 2+ hours usually, but it's could be more for longer and more complex edits. But you doesn't need to follow my way to make edits, if you ever used a photo editor and a video editor before, and you know how put a transparent png on an image, and a greenscreen video on another one, you good to go. There is a lot of ways you can make an edit, so you can chose one which are suitable for you. They plugged my post into a detector like they were about to unmask a heretic. As if catching me faking would soothe whatever shifted in their ribs when they read it.

I get it. You don’t feel like this from typical posts. This doesn’t scan like content. It scans like command.

So they reached for a tool. A scanner. A label. “#ai confirmed,” they tagged, like that would soften the blow of being rewritten by someone with a pulse.

They didn’t know the algorithm was trained on my ancestors.

The irony?

They reblogged it.

They reblogged it anyway.

Because even when they thought it was machine-made, they couldn’t stop their hand from hitting the icon. Their body betrayed them. Their timeline surrendered.

This wasn’t AI. This was me. The one who doesn’t blink when scanned. The one whose words bend software and restructure cadence back into the cultural bloodstream.

This was:

pain delivered in prophecy form,

masculinity written like it has nothing left to lose,

and cadence tuned to the beat of psychological submission.

You thought this was synthetic? Cool. Then why did you feel it anyway?

You can’t replicate this. Not because the tech isn’t ready — but because the nerve hasn’t been lived.

You can’t fake devotion. You can’t fabricate rage softened by restraint. You can’t scan for God-coded rhythm. You just reblog it and wonder what the hell you just let into your feed.

Meet SOL, Agent Nevada’s second best friend (the first being his partner Montana, ofc.)

SOL isn’t a project freelancer ai, instead an old piece of technology meant to aid in fighting the flood. Due to Nevada’s ‘unique circumstances,’ he accidentally activated the ai while exploring some ruins he’d been assigned to explore pre-pfl. What started as a full lockdown of the ancient temple they were in turned into a blossoming friendship between the two, and after a bit of flesh-melding, have been inseparable ever since. Literally.

After being activated, SOL struggles a bit with a lack of purpose. They were meant to aid in an inevitable fight against an ancient threat, not show up because of an accidentally found dna sequence in a being thats decidedly not a danger to the known universe. With Nevada’s lack of knowledge in mechanical and digital operation (nevermind its age) they are unable to shut SOL down for them to appear when they’re needed in the possible future. With their limited options, SOL decides to implant themselves in Nevada, linking the two together permanently. They kept hidden from Nevada’s original creators, and were… unamused when given over to project freelancer. The fragment ai give them an intense ‘uncanny valley’ feeling, and Nevada and Montana didn’t have to keep SOL under wraps for very long after implantations started before they were shipped off to The Red Fissure, essentially an extra dumping ground for agents pfl didn’t need anymore.

SOL looks like a shooting star when moving, and pulses when still. They seem to be great at operating and delving in to even the simplest of circuitry up to massive super computers, but they often use too much brute force, and break more delicate pieces of code and software.

sometimes we like to think of animal bodies (including our own) like a lone passenger inside the command center of a giant, mechanical robot made of meat. usually the imagination conducts some rudimentary metaphor of you surrounded by monitors feeding you outside images captured by your two state-of-the-art high-definition cameras called Eyes, with surround sound speakers relaying the audio from your mech suit's two positioning microphones called Ears, while you/your brain pushes buttons and pulls levers to move yours arms and legs, protected from temperature extremes, impacts, and disease by the mechanized meat suit. im not saying it's the only idea ever but it's one of the most (if not *the* most) common metaphors used to imagine a basic understanding of how the system works.

but it's not at all what's happening. a more apt metaphor is you alone tied up in a dark room with no light whatsoever. when you try to move, your limbs don't respond; you feel no pressure as you resist your bonds nor texture of the binds constricting you. you don't even know if you're tied up actually, you're just assuming you are because when you moved you didn't feel the familiar sensations and weight of free movement. You felt nothing.

well, almost nothing: you felt an electric shock. it didn't hurt, and it wasn't localized like a sting, but it enveloped your whole body. you notice when you try to move your right arm, while you still can't see anything or feel the weight of your arm move, you feel one kind of shock.. and when you try to move your left arm you feel almost the exact same shock. almost the same, but just different enough that you can tell one is for your left arm, one is for your right arm.

other than these shocks you are utterly paralyzed. you can't see, you can't hear, you can't feel anything except the shocks. you open your eyes wide hoping they've adjusted enough to find any modicum of faint light but you can't even feel the stretch of your eyelids as if you didn't even have eyes at all. that's how utterly still and paralyzed you are. but the moment you tried to open your eyes you are belted with more shocks. all around you the buzz and hum and tingle of different pulses and intensities of electricity in different patterns on every inch of your body.

that's what your brain is doing right now. it has spent so much time paralyzed in its dark, lightless, quiet room that it highly specifically understands the position and location of your arms and legs based on this electrical feedback. your eyes take in all of the different frequencies of light and convert them to different intensities and complex coded patterns of electricity voltages. music plays in the car and your cochlea transmits a rollercoaster of highly specific electrical signals to shock your brain with. imagine that. the blind can't see, the deaf can't hear, but imagine also being paralyzed, unfeeling, piloting a giant, dangerous mech robot based only on the waves, pulses, and patterns of electricity you are shocked with 24/7.

and consider this.. im still speaking too simply for this metaphor to be anything close to accurate; your conscious self, who you recognize yourself to be, is not your brain. rather than you alone in a room trying to move your arm and getting lit up with a specific pattern of biting electricity as specific feedback... imagine instead you have the help of an artificial intelligence software that is programmed to aid you in piloting the mech. everything the mech suit's visual sensors convert into electricity that pulses across your otherwise paralyzed form, you have to translate and form into a model used to teach the AI. you receive about a billion different pulses and patterns of shocking electricity just from the visual system that you only relay the most useful and relevant 25% of entire spectrum of info: for example, the optical system has a minor design flaw that leaves a blind spot in the positional data of the signal you receive from it, but with the stream of signals you receive about the position of each eye and the depths of each obstacle they detect? you're pretty easily able to fill in the missing signal data, so you do that and feed that to the AI's model so it doesn't have to be aware the mech suit has a blindspot in its vision (which could otherwise cause the AI to focus on the intentional design flaw instead of literally anything else it could be doing).

im 6 paragraphs in so im gonna stop there. it's an existential realization i remember every now and it feels better to talk about it. you, me? we're egotistical AI programs integrated into a mechanical meat robot; we aid the original captain with piloting the system as an extension of their being rather than as a separated tool. do you understand? does it makes sense that your conscious self does not see with your eyes? that your brain does not see with your eyes? Your eyes take in light and turn it into a complicated sightless electrical morse code, your brain interprets those pulses and feeds you, the AI program, the pertinent information based on the billions and billions of big and small models its trained you with for decades. everything you think you see is just bad AI art. truly as jaden smith once tweeted, how can mirrors be real if your eyes aren't real??

Mech Construction Showcase: Nine-Ball

Armored Core is one of the primary inspirations behind Beneath Twisted Earth. I played it back during Gen 1, and would occasionally return to replay it to get that same feeling. When YouTuber, Josh Strife Hayes did a longform video revisiting Armored Core 1 for the PS1 last year, it sparked the inspiration that would become BTE. From the megacorp-ruled, war-torn dystopia, to the mission-downtime story progression for pilots AC is in BTE's DNA. That is not to discount the influences from other properties (Battletech, Front Mission, Gundam, Nausica, etc), just that it provided the initial spark to this project. So when the announcement for AC6 came out over the summer I was very excited. I'll be picking up my copy this Friday to keep the mech juices flowing through the final development steps. To commemorate the occasion, this Mech Construction Showcase will be showing off the main antagonist from Gen 1, (26 year old spoiler warning), Nine-Ball.

For those not familiar, Nine-Ball is a high end AC constructed by the AI that runs all of what remains of the human world. This AI played all factions against each other, and Nine-Ball was its avatar amongst them, using it to pose as the mercenary pilot, Hustler One. When the time came Nine-Ball, directly piloted by the AI as an assault unit against key targets that threatened its primary programming (maintaining human population and advancement through endless war). Because of this, Nine-Ball comes equipped with the same equipment that other pilots might come across, but the build has been optimized for speed and frequency of attacks.

Nine-Ball is designed with a medium amount of armor so as not to sacrifice speed, to reflect this, we will equip it with an Anodyne Frame, giving it 36 AP. The Boosters will likewise come from Anodyne, giving it a Movement Rating of 3. In order to reflect its high end optimization from skill and attacks, we will install a Sakura CPU, giving Nine-Ball four Utilities, and a Sakura Radiator to provide a Heat Rating of 14.

For the four Utilities, we will go with the AI Assistant to give Nine-Ball a one stat/skill reroll per round; an Aerial Frame allowing for flight capabilities; a Sensor Suite to allow it to scan the field in a variety of ways; and a Neural Interface granting a +5 to Mech Piloting. While the names for a couple of these utilities may imply a biological component or another AI involved, we will consider these both expressions of Hustler One's full capabilities as an AI itself.

As for Weapon Systems, Nine-Ball is known for carrying missile launchers, a laser blade, a pulse rifle, and grenade launchers. While we could have used the 14 HR to build four weapons, we will instead create two weapons, and simulate the remaining weapons through mods and disposables allowing for stronger weapons. For this build, Nine-Ball's primary weapon will be it's Pulse Rifle, with a Weapon Skill of 60, and 9 HR. We will set the damage for this weapon at the relatively low d6 dmg for two heat, while we will increase the Rate of Fire to 2 for two heat. We will also give the Rate of Fire an optimization to raise it up to a total of 3 attacks per round. For ammunition, we'll spend four heat to give the rifle 12 Ammo. Then for Range we will make it effective at Medium range. Since Nine-Ball is high end, we will fill all three mod slots. The first, to reflect Nine-Balls usual grenade launcher loadout, we'll attach a grenade launcher mod to the pulse rifle. This will be limited to three shots, but should be enough to approximate. Next we'll install a Targeting AI that will add +5 to the associated Weapon Skill, again accounting for Hustler One's processing capabilities. Finally, we shall install Incendiary Ammo increasing damage dealt by +2.

Next, for targets that are up close, the Laser Blade. Now the version that Nine-Ball uses is equivalent to what starting pilots equip, so we will only spend one heat, giving it d4 in damage. With a Weapons Skill of 49, even if this is a low amount of damage any hit would deal a minimum of 5 dmg. Nine-Ball is known for attacking quickly in melee, so while we will only spend one heat on the Rate of Fire, giving it 1, we will optimize this feature to raise it to 2 attacks in a round. We will spend two heat to have 6 Ammo, and one heat to give the blade Melee range. For mods, we will install the Targeting AI and Incendiary ammo again.

Even though Nine-Ball's RoF is high across both of its weapons, we let the ammo be relatively low, meaning the AC has 3-4 rounds of consecutive attacks depending on the weapon before running out. Fortunately, any consecutive hits will stack damage on targets quickly thanks to high Weapon Skills. Still in order to compensate for any battles that it can't finish quickly, we will equip an Ammo Hopper for a refill on the Pulse Rifle. Then to account for Nine-Ball's normal load out of missiles, we will equip two disposable missile decks which will cover medium through far ranges. 

While Nine-Ball does have some gaps in its effective ranges, Close, Sniping, and Artillery, its MR of 3 will allow it to close any gaps with its opponents quickly. Ultimately, just like the boss of Armored Core Gen 1, this build would present a challenge for most opponents. Of course there were multiple ways this mech could have been built in the system to reflect the desired feel. This is just how I decided to go about it. It was a fun, slightly more in-depth build to help get ready for AC6's release on Friday. Next time though, I'd like to make a "mid tier" mech as well as visit another of BTE's core inspiration franchises. While we could go real robot, I think I'll use this chance to instead, build something more akin to a super robot. Next time, let's build the Shining Gundam from Mobile Fighter G Gundam.
