Clone Bang 2024- Bionic, Side by Side, Symbiotic

This was the art that I made as a part of team 14 in this year's Clone Bang event!

This lovely fic written by @the-starry-seas, beta'd by @tearfulsolace, and the art was made by @ofteasandherbs and me.

Synopsis:

When Chancellor Palpatine is criticised for keeping Coruscant's most accomplished Guardsman on his personal security team, during a kaiju war that's killed thousands of citizens, there's only one way to salvage his reputation. Fox is abruptly reassigned to the Jaeger Program, with the infuriatingly casual, competent, and charming Jedi Master Quinlan Vos as his partner.

Fox hates the mind meld required for them to pilot a mech. Hates fighting murderous, superpowered monsters. Hates not being allowed to see his brothers. But worst of all is the threat the Chancellor made before rousting Fox from the Senate: fail to win the war, fail to keep the Chancellor's secrets, and Fox's son will be fed to the creatures of the lower levels.

With an entire city-planet on the line, the only thing that matters to Fox is keeping his son safe. And the only thing that matters to Vos is finding out the dark truths of the Chancellor's office. Unable to call on his brothers for help, and unable to trust the Jedi he fights alongside, Fox is on his own. Yet as the war progresses, and he sees more of the Jedi way - of Vos's way - revolutions just may be built on hope.

To celebrate, here are some of my favorite fics (all on Ao3). Go give 'em a read!

+Misunderstandings + Pizza Margherita by @elspirito23 --My dear dear sister wrote this. She's the one that got me into fic and introduced me to the term 'whump'. This is one of my favorites by her! It's a Man From UNCLE fic, with Napoleon whump, Illya guilt, and a nice dose of fluff. I love it so much!

+And on the seventh... by Dorinda --A Master and Commander Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin fic wherein they both go overboard during a battle and end up stranded on an island together. It's very well written and whumpy, and seems meticulously researched with lots of cool little details.

+The Forest Primeval by athena_crikey --An Endeavour whump fic! This is one of the very first fics I read on Ao3 and holds a special place in my heart. The characterizations are great and the whump is v good!

+The Ex by Marchling --911 Bucktommy Buck Whump fic! It's very good whump. And there was recently(ish) a second chapter added, so you get to read about it from both Buck and Tommy's POV which is super neat!

+Who are the Wolves in your Head? by LittleDarlingXOX --This was one of my favorite fics over on ff.net back in the day, and I recently discovered that it's on Ao3 as well! It's got Dick Grayson whump (hell yeah) and Jason Todd angst, it's sooo good! Sad and lovely!

+Lazarus Syndrome by Miss_Six --This Pacific Rim fic isn't overly whumpy, but it's very, very good. A super interesting take on the Drift. Super lovely fic with good Raleigh angst!

+sometimes the short end of the stick is the sharpest by @cartwrong --Slow Horses has been a unique experience for me in terms of fandom, in that I got in very early, and it's one of the smaller fandoms I've been in--and also one of the most active! And a large percentage of us like to put River Cartwright through it (and by it I mean hell, sorry River). This fic is no exception. The characterizations are on point and the whump is great!

+It's the Perfect Time of Year (Somewhere Far Away From Here) by @deepwoundsandfadedscars --Though I've never played it myself, as a preteen I used to watch my big brother play Uncharted in the hopes of there being some Nathan whump. This fic not only delivers on the Nathan whump, it packs a hell of an emotional punch. It's gorgeous and heart-wrenching, an intimate look at grief. Very good. <3

Are there more snake people like Grindle? And how did they come into existence?

There are quite a few of the naga folk! A full naga is a full snake whilst Grindel is a half-naga, half-human. They live in the European, Pacific and Southern Caverns systems.

However, Grindel is quite special for where she lives. Within the European Caverns (the north-most cavern system), it is against the naga's culture to love another race. With the ongoing war that rages over their homeland between the harenoids and the molenoids, the nagas distanced themselves from the other races as they chose to fight over the cavern rather than help the residents who were being hurt inside it.

Grindel's birth was seen as a sin, a forthcoming of the bad times. Her father was a human travelling merchant who was one of the only who were allowed to trade with the naga folk. He had courted and swoon over Grindel's full naga mother, leading to Grindel's existence. The hybrid was mocked and beaten by the elders of the naga clan, and bullied by the others. This spite all boiled to the execution of the mother once Grindel was in her mid teens. She dared never to set tail back in that village again.

It's about time we gave Pacific Rim another spin!

And that brings to a headcanon I have because I got bored one day in high school and can't get the idea out of my head still!

So I'll bring you to Prime specifically, aka Agent Fowler. He's a part of Special Forces, and a representative at that, so they can't talk about their family. But what if a call to the coast brought you to see who his family is? Imagine this:

Fowler: "Wh-Prime, I will be back in a few hours, I just landed! _ Yes, this is about that 'weird circle metal piece' from Pacific Pact, I'll bring it back so you lot can figure out why it involves me! _ I don't know what it is, everything you guys have involve circles, I can't keep track! _ Well, I need to let you go, I'm approaching the group."

"Sir, this is restricted access-"

Fowler: *shows ID*

"... My apologies, this way to Commander."

Fowler: "So gentlemen, what did you find-"

Pentecost: "Wait, William?? What are you doing here??"

Fowler: "Stacker??? It's-God, it's been ages!! You're a commander, and you found alien parts already??"

Pentecost: "Alien??? This is an unregistered Jaeger part."

Fowler: :/

Later on, after the processor was transported back by hand to Optimus and the Autobots:

Pentecost: ".... Where are your pilots?"

Ratchet: "Pilots? To what, a ship? We don't have that."

Fowler: "Yeah, they're aliens Stacker. There's no pilots."

Pentecost: ????

And yes, all the Pacific Pact get ecstatic there's admittedly tiny* allies, but allies nonetheless, and Arcee and everyone else are baffled humans made things so enormous that they might as well bring Omega Supreme and Bruticus back to try and be the same size.

How do you say COMPACFLT?

As a non-American who hasn't seen TGM, I struggle a lot with this particular abbreviation.

Like, do you say "C-O-M-P-A-C-F-L-T"

Or "Compacfleet"

Or "Compac-F-L-T"

Or how do you do that?

I am highly confused and I every time I read a fanfiction with that title in it, my mind goes bingle bongle dingle dangle yickedy doo yickedy daa ping pong lippy tappy too taa mode and that sucks.

Okay maybe I totally missed it in the story, but I’ve gotta ask: how did Jake find out about Ice and Mav?? I know there was a line about “figuring out who Bradley’s dads were” in Debriefing, and it seems like Jake definitely knows by the carrier for the mission, given how he reacts when Bradley says he’s gay and that they “hate him for not being able to hide it like them”, but when was the discussion about exactly what Ice and Mav are to each other? At what point did Bradley tell him, and how long did Jake spend staring at a wall and saying “huh” in a dazed sort of way???

i admit i made it confusing on purpose and i admit there isn’t much of jakes reaction but yes

it’s the third “he was my dad.” specifically about ice. whereas the other two are about goose & mav. because, you know, there are three of them. dads, that is. ice just happens to be the third

Jake canonically doesn’t know what’s up with the holy dad trinity because he doesn’t even react to seeing goose btwn ice (fucking cdr of the pacflt) and mav (his fucking CO) in that old top gun photo —only cares about goose. clueless-ass mf. and the homosexual little “what is with these two!” during the first practice dogfight.

but i bet there were clues. a lot of little things that eventually came together.

a.) scrolling through the navy times on his laptop in bed cause he’s bored one night, tilting it over so bradley can see the screen and read the headline, ‘RADM tom Kazansky named pacific fleet commander,’ just randomly asking “whaddaya make of this guy?” and next to him bradley freezes and almost refuses to speak and then snipishly says, “he’s gay.” / “what?” what a wild thing to say! / “i just know it. he’s gay. look at him. hiding it like that.” / “what a weird fucking thing to say about a guy you’ve never met, bradshaw!” / and bradley going all silent and sullen the way he does sometimes and saying “well i don’t think anything of him. whatever.” / and then both of them put it from their minds and never talk about it again.

B.) all the quiet little dad-related breakdowns over the years. Father’s Day is never happy when bradley’s around. jake made the mistake of asking him why, once. he said something to the effect of “well with three of them you’d think id be statistically likely to get a dad who wasn’t unbelievably fucked-up or dead but nope! it’s three times as bad as usual!” and refused to elaborate. bradley is often annoying this way.

c.) the fact that capt mitchell, maverick, who looks like a gracefully-aging movie star, is by all accounts nice and charming and mostly-ish respected, and yet apparently chronically single, a confirmed bachelor for as long as most officers can remember. hondo knows something, clearly, but he’s being very cagey about it, apparently out of loyalty to maverick. even on day ONE of the special training detachment at Top Gun, there are rumors. Some more mean-spirited than others (looking at you, harvard) which Jake tries to shut down, because he remembers being on the receiving end of mean-spirited rumors like that, and rumors about a guy like maverick probably aren’t true. ‘I’ve heard about him. Whispers. Watch him the next time we hit the Hard Deck. He’ll flirt with Penny the bartender, and she’ll flirt back, but he sure as hell won’t take her home. You know what I mean.’ Yeah right. dangerous to make comments about a man like maverick. jake keeps his mouth shut.

d.) but then there’s the way bradley acts around him. They’ve met before and they know each other and there is not only bad blood between them, it’s blood that’s been simmering for a while and just now boiling over. Three dads. the maverick-related rumors. hmm…

e.) that picture of goose and mav and ice. OKAY. Now we’re getting somewhere. Bradley’s dad… LTJG nick bradshaw… FLEW with maverick. Looks up the obituary online and reads the news reports he can find in the archives. Maverick was behind the stick when goose ate it. Okay. Two out of three dads found and accounted for. (Because they’re broken up, and because jakes still heartbroken, this fact will be used as ammunition. “Or that maverick was flying when his—“ “YOU SON OF A BITCH!” et cetera et cetera.)

f.) on the flight deck shaking hands with the commanding officer of every commanding officer jake has ever dad—admiral tom kazansky, come to wish the aviators good luck, and to sanction their attack. this is, like, a big deal. like a really big deal. like, makes you wanna stop and ask him for a selfie to post on your LinkedIn to advance your career kind of big deal. but out of the corner of his eye… jake’s noticing Bradley on the verge of a dad-related breakdown. bradley doesn’t seem to care how much of a big deal it is to have the privilege to shake the hand of the commander of the pacific fleet. isn’t even looking. something big and hateful between them. something like bad blood. oh oh oh. wait. It’s coming together.

g.) poking fun at him. psyching him out. what’s a little pre-suicide-mission hazing between exes? what is with you, bradshaw? you’re, like, freaking out over here..! —and Bradley, looking for someone—anyone!—to trust, tugging him into his cabin on the aircraft carrier and bursting into tears and crashing down onto the linoleum into jake’s arms and saying “he was my dad…!”
