What is a ‘Concept’ in the World of Real Magical Girls?

Since being introduced to the magical girl community here on Tumblr, I’ve noticed a lot of emphasis and discussion of concepts but not a lot of explanation of what they are or their necessity. I sympathize with aspiring magical heroes who see these conversations, and see other magical girls adding to or modifying their concepts, without really understanding what they are and whether they need one to get started on their own magical journeys.

Note: Please understand that these are my own thoughts and observations and I am not speaking for the community at large. My goal here is to reframe the conversation to potentially help aspiring magical heroes and veteran practitioners alike.

In the simplest terms, I believe a concept is something that points to an approach for magical work. Most commonly, you can see magical heroes use concepts as a way to describe their duties, aesthetic, and even if their practice is based on a particular piece of media or canon. This can be as simple as stating, ‘I want to be a puella magi’ or, ‘I was contracted by Kyubey to fight Witches’ (both statements essentially saying that the writer operates within the magical framework outlined in Puella Magi Madoka Magica) but it is not uncommon to see fleshed out personal mythologies, deity worship, and worldbuilding as well. Generally, I think this is done by reality shifters and those who use the Law of Attraction and/or the Law of Assumption before or during the ‘scripting’ phase of manifesting being a magical girl and the desired reality they seek to that end but I have also seen used as a seed or jumping-off point for different sorts of magical exploration. Regardless, by outlining a concept you can essentially direct the trajectory of your magical journey and help other practitioners, or anyone else who may stumble upon your blog, understand your inspirations and aspirations.

The idea of the ‘concept’ in magical girl discourse, particularly when we are dealing with desired realities, seems very similar to the exploration of paradigms and paradigm shifting in chaos magic. To my understanding, and this is heavily influenced by the writings of physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn, a paradigm is not just a set of beliefs or ideals, but is the entire framework on which a reality can exist and be experienced: it includes dogma, technique, language, and philosophy but also the laws of nature and how we decide to interpret them. This is not to say that I think ‘concepts’ and ‘paradigms’ are the same thing but I think they are certainly related.

If we step back to the world of magical girls with this in mind, I think we can expand our understanding of ‘concepts’ to include magical and energetic models, manifestation techniques, and even how we come to terms with balancing our magical and mundane duties (or if there is even a separation of the two). But while it can seem desirable to have everything about your magical life predetermined for you, there can, and arguably should, be room for doubt, skepticism, and questioning. If not, I feel like there is little to no space for experimentation and wonder. As we learn and grow as magical heroes, it is perfectly understandable that our views, powers, and duties may shift with our experiences and interactions with others.
