The Paralympics start Today!
I wanted to celebrate by continuing Australia's tradition of using (definitely not) furry characters to represent our athletes lol. Wheelchair basketball was my sport back when i was playing, so i have a soft spot for it, and Australia's women's team are The Gliders, so i went with a basketball playing sugar-glider character!
I had plans to do a few more characters for different para-sports before the Paralympics end but things have come up and I'm not sure I'll have the time for more, but I really want to!
On a little side note I thought about while drawing this, having a long tail (movable or not) would be a nightmare in both wheelchair basketball and rugby lol - you aren't supposed to hit people from behind but it does inevitably happen a lot, quite aggressively, and even tucking the tail underneath the frame wouldn't protect all of it in a collision.
ID: A digital, cell-shaded illustration of an anthropomorphic sugar-glider wearing a green and gold Australian basketball singlet, holding an orange basketball in her right hand, as though she is getting ready to throw it. She is sitting in a teal high-pointer's basketball wheelchair, which is a tall with slanted wheels. /End ID

How visually impaired long jump works, according to what I saw today:
1 - telling the audience to shut the fuck up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2 - pointing the athlete in the right direction and keeping said direction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3 - while assuming a cool pose
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4 - clapping guy for rhyhtm
Tumblr media
5 - RUN! Maybe a bit more centered but okay
Tumblr media
6 - Almost trample your clapping guy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7 - Land
Tumblr media
8 - Roadworks cosplay and repowdering the jumping area

PSA that the paralympics are starting today, so if you enjoyed watching any part of the preceding olympic events PLEASE show the same love and excitement for disabled athletes.
the way they modify the different sports alone is incredibly interesting and you'll learn a lot about disabilities and mobility aids in the process!

How Brazil became a Paralympic power
Tumblr media
As the Paris Paralympic Games come to a close, Brazil emerged stronger than ever, securing its best result in history and solidifying its position as a global leader in parasports.
With a haul of 25 golds, 26 silvers, and 38 bronzes, Brazil finished fifth in the medal standings, further building on its legacy of athletic excellence since breaking into the top 10 at the 2008 Beijing Games.
Brazil’s Paralympic performance could have been even stronger if the men’s blind football team had secured gold instead of settling for the bronze. A semifinal loss to Argentina kept Brazil out of the gold medal match for the first time ever — breaking a five-title streak and denying the country a chance to surpass the Netherlands for fourth place in the overall standings.
This year’s result cements Brazil’s reputation as a global powerhouse in Paralympic sports, particularly track and field and swimming. The Brazil Team put up a performance that almost surpassed the most optimistic projections of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB) ahead of Paris. The CPB believed the country would win between 70 and 90 medals, with some experts predicting a top 5 finish.

Hunter Woodhall joins his wife as a gold medalist at the Paralympics. Tara Davis-Woodhall was out there continuing the lovely support we saw from him during her event at the Olympics.
Tumblr media
That said, and I hate to say it, I'm absolutely fixated on this guy in the background hitting the camera with the side eye the whole time.

Anyway, best wishes to the Woodhalls and this man. Hope y'all are living it up.

Tribute post for our Paralympic Athletes
who with their 13 medals pushed Greece up in the rankings 19 places compared to Tokyo 2020. It should be noted that with the (awful) system of counting only the golds, Greece is now in the 33th place whereas it is in the 23th place if the total of medals is counted.
Gold medallists:
Tumblr media
Nasos Gkavelas (and his guide Yannis Nyfantopoulos) - Men's 100m - T11. With a time of 11.02, it is his second golden medal in a row after the Paralympiad of Tokyo 2020.
Athanasios Konstantinidis - Men's Shot Put - F32. At 54 years of age, this is one of the two medals he won in these Paralympic Games.
Alexandra Stamatopoulou - Women's 50m Backstroke - S4
Silver Medallists:
Tumblr media
Athanasios Konstantinidis - Men's Club Throw - F32. Again!
Antonios Tsapatakis - Men's 100m Breaststroke - SB4
Leda Maria Manthopoulou - Women's 100m - T38. She happens to be the daughter of a loved Greek actor who passed away earlier this year.
Bronze Medallists:
Tumblr media
Konstantinos Tzounis - Men's Discus Throw - F56
Theodora Paschalidou - Judo Women's -70 kg J1. First time Judo Greek win in the Paralympics!

Christina Gkentzou - Taekwondo - Women K44 -65kg. First time Taekwondo Greek win in the Paralympics!
Grigorios Polychronidis (and ramp operator & wife Katerina Patroni) - Boccia - Men's Individual - BC3. This is his seventh (!) medal in Paralympic Games!!!
Emmanouil Stefanoudakis - Men's Javelin Throw - F54. This is his third medal after the bronze in London and the golden in Rio!

love how they're so in your face about the way society creates a strict barrier towards people with disabilities (+ how colorful the dancers are against the all-white stage)
