There is nowhere to sit, so Nora and Hae Sung stand together, holding onto the same subway pole. They do not stand too close and their hands do not touch.

There’s a word in Korean. 인연 [in yun]. It means “providence” or “fate”. It’s 인연 if two strangers even walk by each other in the street and their clothes accidentally brush. Because it means there must have been something between them in their past lives. If two people get married, they say it’s because there have been eight thousand layers of 인연. Over eight thousand lifetimes. PAST LIVES 2023 | dir. Celine Song

scenes I see myself in - an edit
for Mental Health Awareness Month
to those who still heal from things they don't speak about
I made this edit a while ago and I wanted to share it. As I'm sure I share with many of you, my life has been not ideal. I'm 18, almost 19, and like everyone else, I'm still healing from things I don't often speak of. But opening up about it and sharing my own journey of how I got through my own struggles is one of the ways I try to spread hope. In honor of May being Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to share an edit of media that has helped me through hard times and media that I've identified with. The characters shown here are ones I saw a lot of myself in and related to.
Media (movies, tv, books, etc.) has been a huge factor in my own healing process. When I see a character that reflects how I feel, it makes me feel so seen in a way that nothing else compares to.
To give context, I was bullied a lot in my middle school years. It got to the point where I became very depressed (I was already diagnosed with clinical depression at age 10) and ended up contemplating some very sad actions I'm sure you can figure out.
To my surprise, I developed post-traumatic amnesia. Yes, from bullying. I can barely remember 8th grade year, in particular. I have gaps in my memory. Like, I can remember all my teachers from 6th grade but I can't picture my 8th grade friends' faces clearly. It's something I've had a hard time coming to terms with, but I spent so long wondering if I was being dramatic, if this was no big deal and I was just looking for attention. I spent nights crying on the kitchen floor, spiraling, and bargaining with myself. I don't think I fully healed from everything until I was 17.
I wanted to share my story because there are so many people who have been in my situation. I know logically that there are people who've been through worse and I hope those people heal and get the support they need, but at the end of the day, I lost some memories and that should be enough proof that what I went through matters, too. The same should go for anyone who sees this post. If it hurt you, it hurt you. And that's something.
I see you. You're not alone.
And to the storytellers who create stories that reflect their own struggles. Please, please don't stop creating. Storytelling is a vessel through which we try to make sense of our real world.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this year's theme is Turn Awareness Into Action. If you know someone who is struggling, simply reaching out and letting them know that you're here for them can be enough.
The titles of the movies, tv and other media I featured in this edit are in the corner of the video.
The voiceovers are from the following (in order):
The Holdovers (2023), voice - Paul Giamatti as Paul Hunham
The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), voice - Logan Lerman as Charlie Kelmeckis
Paris, Texas (1984), voice - Harry Dean Stanton as Travis Henderson
Stranger Things season 3 episode 8, voice - David Harbour as Jim Hopper
The song is an instrumental version of Alabama by Current Joys.
Have a blessed day and happy Mental Health Awareness Month!
- with love, Allie
Ps. Let me know if you like these concept edits and want more of them!
