For example, in February 2019, Zorabot collaborated with temi USA Inc. to sell "temi - The Personal Robot" in France, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, the U.K., and the Netherlands.
Whereas, the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region is expected to adopt personal robots at the highest rate in the forthcoming years, due to the increasing purchasing power of people. The surging affluence of people is encouraging them to deploy personal robots that take up numerous daily tasks. Among APAC nations, China, India, South Korea, and Japan are projected to use a considerable number of personal robots, owing to the plunging costs of robotic vacuum cleaners and the increasing developments of advanced technologies in these countries.

There's a nuance to the Amazon AI checkout story that gets missed.

Because AI-assisted checkouts on its own isn't a bad thing:

This was a big story in 2022, about a bread-checkout system in Japan that turned out to be applicable in checking for cancer cells in sample slides.
But that bonus anti-cancer discovery isn't the subject here, the actual bread-checkout system is. That checkout system worked, because it wasn't designed with the intent of making the checkout cashier obsolete, rather, it was there to solve a real problem: it's hard to tell pastry apart at a glance, and the customers didn't like their bread with a plastic-wrapping and they didn't like the cashiers handling the bread to count loaves.
So they trained the system intentionally, under controlled circumstances, before testing and launching the tech. The robot does what it's good at, and it doesn't need to be omniscient because it's a tool, not a replacement worker.
Amazon, however, wanted to offload its training not just on an underpaid overseas staff, but on the customers themselves. And they wanted it out NOW so they could brag to shareholders about this new tech before the tech even worked. And they wanted it to replace a person, but not just the cashier. There were dreams of a world where you can't shoplift because you'd get billed anyway dancing in the investor's heads.
Only, it's one thing to make a robot that helps cooperative humans count bread, and it's another to try and make one that can thwart the ingenuity of hungry people.
The foreign workers performing the checkouts are actually supposed to be training the models. A lot of reports gloss over this in an effort to present the efforts as an outsourcing Mechanical Turk but that's really a side-effect. These models all work on datasets, and the only place you get a dataset of "this visual/sensor input=this purchase" is if someone is cataloging a dataset correlating the two...
Which Amazon could have done by simply putting the sensor system in place and correlating the purchase data from the cashiers with the sensor tracking of the customer. Just do that for as long as you need to build the dataset and test it by having it predict and compare in the background until you reach your preferred ratio. If it fails, you have a ton of market research data as a consolation prize.
But that could take months or years and you don't get to pump your stock until it works, and you don't get to outsource your cashiers while pretending you've made Westworld work.
This way, even though Amazon takes a little bit of a PR bloody nose, they still have the benefit of any stock increase this already produced, the shareholders got their dividends.

You pass through the entryway of your shared penthouse apartment, the doors slamming shut behind you. With a groan, you kick off your shoes and trudge over to the pink, plush couch. You bellyflop onto it, and your mind, which has had your stress amped up to eleven for the past month due to needing to finish your thesis, finally breaks away and puts you in a more vulnerable state.
As you hug one of the many plushies of Mettaton’s box form that lies around the house, the aforementioned robot enters the room. “Well, hello, beau-” Mettaton stops short as he sees you curled up like a cat on the couch, hands clenched around the marketable plush. He slowly walks over to the sofa, gently sitting on it and placing a hand on your back. “Is it one of those small times again, darling?” You nod, your head peeking out for a moment. “I understand. You’ve been so stressed lately and barely had a break.”
“Been hard,” you mumble. “Don’t have much time for care.” The anxiety had taken an effect on your skin and body, with pimples from stress sprouting on your face and your back aching from hours spent bent over your laptop.
“I can tell, lovie. Would you like me to help you feel pretty again?” You nod in response, and Mettaton takes a pillow from the couch and places it on his lap. “Come here, let me braid your hair.” You ease into his touch, allowing his gloved fingers to ease the tension in your scalp and partition your hair. The motions are repetitive and controlled, allowing you to relax more and reduce the worries inside your head. “I understand if you don’t want to talk, darling. Would you like me to share some good news instead?” You reply with a happy hum. “Good!”

Twice this year, Sony has marketed its robotic Aibo, a luxurious toy for spoiled children. But the beast could soon change its vocation.
In two, even three years, Aibo, man's best cybernetic friend, could make friends with the Playstation 2! If, currently, the Aibo mainly resembles a gadget for privileged wealthy people, and which we tire of relatively quickly, Sony has other ambitions for future models. His project, in addition to a more affordable price, aims to develop an interface that would allow you to connect your Aibo to another of its great successes: its Playstation game console. Rather clever: with nearly 40% of Sony's profits in 1998 coming from the division which takes care of the video games activity (SCE), the Playstation has become a major business for the Japanese electronics giant.
Aibo on Playstation The Playstation 2 is announced commercially in Japan from March. This new version of the first game console is already making many people dream: not only does it have exceptional computing power, but it is also equipped with sophisticated connectivity. The public's reception promises to be enthusiastic, so this should make it the ideal platform for the Aibo! The latter currently uses an 8 or 32 MB Memory Stick to store its programmed behaviors. Thanks to a remote control which emits sound signals, it is possible to transmit a few simple orders. The next generations should of course go further. Among other things, it would be possible to download a program or a series of instructions created on Playstation 2 directly into the beast.
A multitude of possible applications can be envisaged. For example, an introduction to programming, inspired by the Logo language for children: but instead of moving a "turtle" in the two-dimensional space of a computer screen, it would be the robot that would follow the programmed path.
Another possible application: a "player" could program a route or a mission (forbidding "intruders" from his room, checking the presence in a given place of a person whose "visual signature" or "voice print" the Aibo knows), or even a joust with a friend's Aibo (race, jumping competition or other free figures…). All this could even be accomplished via a virtual Aibo that you move around with the joystick like in some kind of video game, rather than entering lines of code or macros. Once the room had been simply modeled in 3D using primitives (cubes, cylinders, etc.), the virtual robot would then have to be moved around this 3D world, an exact copy of the house, before the Aibo could actually perform the maneuver.

There are different definitions of "AGI" (Artificial General Intelligence). Some people focus on AI's understanding and possibly even sentience, while many focus on what it can do. Some people define it as equivalent to the abilities of the average person; others, as equivalent to the abilities of experts.
Part of the challenge is that intelligence comes in many forms. For instance, the ability to grasp objects is a form of intelligence though it's not something people generally think of as a business-related skill. And at the same time, the moravec paradox observes that computers are great at things humans are not and vice versa (e.g. computers have a hard time grasping objects but can do advanced maths in milliseconds.) So, comparing human and machine intelligence is challenging.
That said, I favor the "what it can do" approach because that has the most immediate impact in people's lives. That is, if we have AI systems that can do economically useful work just as good as the average person (or even better, the average expert), that means a few things:
People won't be needed to work. (Jobs? Economy?)
All economic output could increase several times over. For instance, AI may advance our tech. At a minimum, robots can work 24/7/365 whereas humans work a fraction of that. Imagine our ability to fabricate advanced computing chips doubling, which can then be used to make more chips, etc.
We may have begun the "singularity", where digital based knowledge and skills skyrockets. This is because we will have reached a point where the AI can improve itself. This means expanding the types of jobs it can perform, improving its performance, and likely innovating new techniques or technologies to assist with its goals.
(Of course, that could have tremendously good or tremendously bad outcomes - e.g. global retirement and healthy ecosystem vs literal doom - but that's another discussion.)
This vid argues that we've hit AGI by this definition. And I think that by some narrow definitions, this may be the case. (I still think we need more accuracy, a better "ecosystem" for it to function, more real-world modeling, etc. OTOH, this isn't preventing it from being massively useful right now.) So, this doesn't mean that the things I just listed will happen tomorrow - but it does mean that we should be expecting more enormous advances in the lab, and start to see real world applications slowly beginning. The line between AI and AGI is quickly blurring. Buckle up.
p.s. I know casual readers probably hear about AI here and there but may still have a picture in their head of AI as basically just a tool for making crappy pictures. I'm begging y'all to see that AI is both way beyond that (e.g. it's now making literal movies, and rapidly approaching market-ready results) and more importantly, that it's much more than that. AI is advancing every field of science, from fusion energy to quantum computing to curing diseases and so much more. This is no longer a curiosity. This is real and it's here.

We are seeking a talented and versatile illustrator to bring to life a captivating children's book featuring android robots. This heartwarming story, written by a first-time children's book author with a background in fiction writing, explores themes of empathy, belonging, and overcoming adversity.
Inspired by the author's personal experiences with homelessness, grief, and poverty, the book will address sensitive topics such as housing insecurity and bullying in a compassionate and educational manner. Create approximately 100 illustrations for an 80-page children's book.

The reasoning of "just a tool" shows an incredible understatement of understanding of how much the generative AI is impacting the professional fields, and as a consequence of that, the aspirations of amateurs.
A famous saying in the artistic and literary world is "Ideas are cheap". it's the actual work that goes into the execution that makes art art, and that doesn't have to mean that it all needs to be photorealistic, but that does mean that the process of the art creation is often what is talked about when you see it in museums or at competitions.
Jackson Pollock splattered paint on a canvas, Marcel Duchamp declared a urinoir to be a fountain and it was art; the idea was cheap. The boldness of actually going all in on the simplicity of that process and taking it seriously, openly and honestly showing that their process WAS in fact just splattering paint or picking up ready made objects, that was all very new.
in the same way, you can't really pull that off nowadays anymore, because you'll just be someone who imitates Pollock or Duchamps.
Some artists, however use large machines and robotics. This looks very cool! The Robotic art piece Can't Help Myself has been seen on tumblr, the sad robotic arm that does a little dance as dark red liquid oozes out, until it seemingly panics and quickly starts wiping the liquid back into itself. The machinery is used here as "just a tool" too.
But the incredibly widespread application of AI art combines all the worst factors of all of this; AI makes it very easy to execute any cheap idea and get an artwork that looks decent at first glance, but there's nothing really bold or honest about pretending to have made an oil painting while you know nothing about oil, paint, or color theory. There is barely any process to speak of, other than the prompt/programming that was offered to the AI and the amount of iterations the computer went through until you reach the desired result. but since most of the process happens through machine learning, we can't really peer into that in the same way that we can peer into humans without humanizing the machine. At the same time, because a lot of AI function via the internet (though of course not all of them do), there's also a little bit of obscuring that goes on when it comes to the process. in art, when I think of "just a tool", I think of a brush, a pencil, a pen. in some cases a personal computer, or a drawing tablet. house hold items, that, although some can be expensive, or big, are ultimately clearly tools.
What I DON'T think of when someone mentions tools are factory machines that could replace 90% of a work force. When a car factory is managed by 100 mechanics, and 90 of them get replaced by robotic arms, it's not the correct terminology to say "don't worry, that arm is just a tool". And if hundreds or thousands of amateur crafters suddenly start building shoddy cars in their back yard because they could afford to have such a mechanical arm installed, would you still feel safe on the road? The amount of mechanical arms suddenly being on the market drives up the prices of computers. Generative AI is that mechanical arm. The internet is being overrun with quickly made, shoddy art, often presented as realistic depictions of either hand made art, or even real life photography. AI art that, within it's own picture, boldly shows to be AI art is very rare and unsurprisingly THAT is the AI art that can also be seen in museums sometimes. At the same time the popularity of the AI art causes a host of environmental concerns and unforeseen political problems. Art, messaging and propaganda is made at a scale never seen before, and it's doing damage.
So when people say AI is just a tool, no it's not. It's a factory machine capable of replacing an artistic team, being put into the hands of the common people, and treated as if it's merely a pencil. And it is spreading very very cheap ideas very very quickly.
i literally dont care what your excuse for using AI is. if you didnt put your own effort into making it im not putting my own effort into interacting with it.
