Reach for the stars - week 2-ish

I've been procrastinating making another check-in post, because last week I was struggling a lot with finding the motivation to write, and I was telling myself I would check in when I got back on track.

Looking back, my word count isn't that bad, though. I wrote 2526 words last week. So, I'm definitely proud of pulling through. It's just a bit below what I was hoping to do.

It's all connected with how my mental health was last week, and I think it colored my outlook on my achievements. It feels weird to go into details in a post where I tag another blog, but maybe I'll add an "uncensored" bit at the end under the cut.

On Sunday, I didn't write at all, so unfortunately, I reset my streak. But I had it going for 17 days, so now my goal is to get an even longer one!

Today I wrote 567 words, so hopefully, I can keep the momentum going this week.

The reason I was struggling so much with writing is that some PMS-related mental health issues crept up on me. It happened to me before that I would be perfectly peachy for two weeks, motivated, positive... then a week before my menstruation, I would start to lose that. I would feel really tired, unmotivated, things I like, writing, for example, don't give me that much joy, I kind of feel worthless and unsuccessful and impatient... and then my period comes, and I start to feel better, but now I'm in physical pain. Very fun.

That's kind of what happened to me now. I was still writing, but I couldn't really get in the flow or feel satisfied with what I wrote.

I actually noticed this before and took some steps that improved on it. But then, when it got better, I kind of... uh forgot to do all the things that made it better? lol

(Now, I'm aware of a thing called PMDD, and that what I'm describing may sound like it. Tbh I don't feel like I qualify. What I describe doesn't keep me from my job, doesn't result in screaming matches with my partner, and doesn't even keep me from writing altogether. And I have been to therapy, and I don't qualify for depression or anxiety. Though how much of that is just me holding it together and doing my best to get better for long years in an environment that wasn't aware of mental health, well, we'll never know. Also, even if I would qualify, I prob wouldn't be interested in a diagnosis, given that I'm not interested in the only two treatment options that aren't lifestyle changes. So let's just keep calling it PMS.)

In any case, I have a game plan now, so hopefully I won't forget to stick to it this time lmao It's so important to take care of yourself so you can keep doing the things you love.

I also think the word count goal I set might be a bit too high for the spirit of the challenge. 500 words don't feel like a lot to me when I'm doing great. But when I'm not doing so well, or life is busy, it can feel like a lot, and the whole point here is to focus on small goals.

I was actually listening to this speech, for lack of a better term, and it really resonated with me. It's also talking about the importance of focusing on small steps. It might be a bit too esoteric for people (it's Richard Rudd's personal contemplation of the "Gene Keys" mixed up with music), and it's not related to writing, but I'll link it here because this is the uncensored portion lol

"If you are looking up at the whole mountain, you feel overwhelmed. If, however, you decide to just look down at your feet, maybe you'll be captivated."

I think that's a great idea and something I can implement in the process of writing a book.
