The Decent Thing (A ‘Pinocchio’ Regression Fic)

After a triggering moment causes Honest John to regress, Gideon feels stuck. Luckily, he’s not alone… Contains mentions of tobacco. Suggested by @wolfy-star1401

Anyone who’d met John knew “Honest” was a laughable moniker. The fox rarely spoke a word of truth, even when there was nothing to gain from lying. Fibs about the weather, deceptions about directions, full-on whoppers about who he did or didn’t know…

And as for his fears…

Gideon knew John was afraid of the coachman, knew by how he flinched away from the human and how quiet he became after an encounter. But he had no idea HOW afraid the fox was. Not until the day they passed the tobacco shop.

Dozens of scents poured out from behind the door, but for a cat (and a fox) it was easy to distinguish one from another. The mild Brightleaf, the smokey Latakia, the rich Habano-

And Perique. The coachman’s leaf of choice.

The pair froze up. Gideon shuddered at the familiar scent.

John BOLTED.

It took Gideon a moment to realize he wasn’t coming back, and then the cat started running as well. John had longer legs and better balance; he easily outpaced him, and soon was out of sight.

But fortunately, Gideon had an idea of where he’d gone.

He heard John whimpering even before he turned down the alley. The fox was pressed against the brick wall, his tail curled tight around his body, his head down, his shoulders shaking.

Gideon crept slowly closer, but even those slight movements made John flinch away. Gideon tried to make reassuring hand motions, but John kept his head down..

Gideon had seen John regressed and upset before, but this was different. How was he supposed to help if the fox wouldn’t even look at him?

“Gee, Jiminy! It’s Mr. Honest John!”

Instinctually, Gideon ducked behind the nearest crate, hoping the voice did not belong to an irate former mark. John didn’t move a muscle or say a word; yet another indicator that he was regressed.

“Huh! C’mon, Pinoke, we don’t need to get mixed up with him again.”

“But Jiminy, he looks hurt…”

Well, they’re not yelling, at least.

When Gideon peeked out, he was surprised to see a dark-haired kid - and some kind of bug. The bug had its arms folded and a frown on its tiny face, but the kid was slowly creeping closer.

“Hurt, nothin’! I’ll bet you this is some kinda trick,” the bug said sternly.

Gideon finally came out from behind the crate, shaking his head firmly. The kid grinned as if he was delighted to see him.

“Oh! Hi there, Mr. Gideon!”

“What’d I tell ya?” the bug said. “There’s sure to be trouble with both of these- Now, what d’you suppose that means?”

Gideon was miming as quick as he could, pointing to John, imitating tears, making a cradle of his arms, cracking a whip. The kid blinked his wide eyes and nodded.

“I think Mr. Honest John got scared a’ somethin’. See, Jiminy, he’s crying!”

John still hadn’t looked up, but his shoulders were shaking harder than ever. Even the bug looked a little unsure now.

“Well, I’ll be. How’s about that?”

“What should I do, Jiminy?”

The bug paced in a tiny circle, hands folded behind his back, frowning thoughtfully. Finally, he shrugged. “If somebody’s in trouble, and you can help, you ought to. It’s only decent, y’see. Try talkin’ to him, Pinoke.”

“Okay, Jiminy.” The boy trotted closer, but stopped when John flinched away. “Hi, Mr. Honest John. I’m sorry you got scared. Wanna talk about it?”

There was a long moment of silence, but eventually John shook his head, and Gideon breathed a silent sigh of relief.

“Okay,” the kid continued. “Do you wanna talk about somethin’ else?”

Another head-shake.

This time, the bug spoke up. “You’re not hurt, are ya? No cuts or bumps? Well, then, what’s all the tears for? Buck up!” It hopped closer and pulled out a tiny handkerchief. “C’mon now, clean your face.”

John automatically wiped his eyes on his sleeve, then peered down. Whether it was surprise at seeing a talking bug or bewilderment at the minuscule handkerchief being offered, Gideon couldn’t say; but something made John start laughing almost as hard as he’d been crying. The kid barked out a laugh, then clapped both hands over his mouth. The bug looked from one to the other, clearly annoyed.

“Alright, let’s all laugh at the cricket, why don’t we?”

John started to cackle even louder, and Gideon smiled; the worst was over, and he knew how to help from here.

Hi! I’m good, thanks for asking! I hope you’re doing well too! These two re honestly my favorite characters from Pinocchio, 10/10 would watch a slapstick cartoon of their shenanigans alone. Here are some regression headcanon’s for them both!l

Little!Honest John & Kitten!Gideon Headcanons

I absolutely agree that Honest John would regress 5-9, but also be a 13ish permaregressor.

And I think Gideon would be 1-4!

Neither have caregivers; but they look out for each other

Almost exclusively go by Johnny and Giddy when regressed.

Other than that they don’t have nicknames

Given the raggedy state of their clothes and desperation for money, they don’t have a lot to spare on toys. Instead, they DIY fun stuff, like make drums from old cans, making paper airplanes, and using rocks and sticks instead of blocks.

They also play lots of pretend, hide and seek, and tag

Honest John gives me lots of big bro vibes. He is doing all the older sibling things: piggyback rides, tricking/pranking Gideon, very protective, being the one in charge, etc

John gets comfort through physical touch, namely hugs and curling up with blankets. Gideon is always happy to provide cuddles on the bad days

Honest John likes to make up stories and plays when regressed; he then acts them out during playtime

Despite being an older/middle regressor, he chews a lot—often on his nails or coat sleeve.

He loves being tickled too!

Gideon is autistic; he is nonverbal and stims when anxious (canon!)

He loves crawling and climbing while regressed; he’s very curious about his environment and is sensory seeking.

He is triggered by loud noises though

He’s calmed by dancing and spinning

Gideon is afraid of making mistakes and often needs reassurance from John if he’s doing something well

And the kitty follows after John everywhere, never leaves his side when feeling little.

He definitely leans into cat behavior when regressed. He loves playing with balls of yarn, if they’re at the circus he’ll chase the stage lights as they move, and he will jump on John.

Unrelated to agere; but my personal headcanon is that John and Gideon were once human boys taken to Pleasure Island; hence how they met, got animal/anthro forms, don’t seem to have an education, and are stuck working with the Coachman but are afraid of him and the mention of P.I. While they were living it up on the island, the two became good friends, as John stood up for Gideon when he was teased for being quiet.

P Agere Hcs:

I love lies of p so I'm making some agere hcs for P because I am a little P truther (can't wait for the dlc also spoilers for the game)

His age range is 1-5

He's actually the one who regresses youngest out of all the littles in the hotel

When he was first regressing it was involuntary however now it's mostly voluntary (sometimes can be involuntary though)

Just like how he is when hes big P is usually a quiet little

However because hes learning about how to be human, he does still struggle to handle his emotions when small which can cause him to react easily

Because he doesn't really remember his past and what being a kid is like there is a lot of figuring out what he likes and dislikes and just trial and error

P doesn't really care for things like gender (even the more human he becomes he doesn't care) so he has a lot of things like toys that may be considered "boy" or "girl" but he doesn't care because he loves them (while I hc p and carlo as trans I like to imagine p has no opinions or cares about gender)

His main caregivers are Sophia, Antonia, and Gemini but Eugenie and Venigni will also care for him from time to time, sometimes Geppetto will take care of him as well but P honestly prefers to be taken care of by the others more

Sophia is actually a flip herself and will have playdates with P

P does use pacifiers but very rarely, he's not much of a chewer or really puts things in his mouth so he doesn't use them much

P also uses diapers, though he finds himself getting embarrassed when he does use them and needs reassurance during it

He's nicknames for everyone when little are Antonia mama, Sophia sisi, Gemini gem gem, Eugenie missy, Venigni Venny, Polendina ponpon, and Geppetto papa

Also speaking of Venigni, he is actually a flip too and will play with P sometimes but that doesn't happen much

Even when little P is a very good boy, hes a rule follower and does what is asked of him always

His favorite thing to do when small is put things together and take things apart and things like making music with his toy musical instruments especially his toy piano

He loves listening to music it brings him a lot of joy especially if its on the piano

Loves reading and listening to Antonia and Sophia tell him stories

He also actually likes learning things, like facts about animals, machines, stuff about other places, just anything really

He loves being held and physical touch when small, he realized this when Antonia layed his head on her lap and petted his hair when he first regressed

Because he loves physical touch he always tries to hold someones hand

P needs a lot of naps when little, he's very sleepy especially considering the things he does it's not suprising that he gets tired easily

He also has a tendency to fall asleep when he's doing something, if he's reading, playing, or just doing something he may end up falling asleep

Sugar doesn't give him a rush, everyone in the hotel thought it would but when he ate some sweets the first time while he was little, it did nothing to him which was a suprise

Please be nice to him if you try to tease him or get mad at him he will cry

When P has nightmares he goes to the nearest person, calls their name, and then hug them while he cries and tells them what is wrong

Sometimes when P is focused on something he will forget to regress and even sometimes not realize he's regressing until someone says something

A lot of time when happens it's Gemini because it happens most when he's traveling

(under this will be au stuff where basically everyone lives and Geppetto becomes a good dad because I want everyone to be happy)

When P finds a way to save Romeo he and P play together a lot

Sophia, P and Romeo all end up becoming playmates!

Romeo and P are very different littles but that doesn't stop them from spending as much time as they can together

P is very protective of the people he loves and when he's little he does this thing where he will stand in front of people he cares about and puff out his chest as a way to protect them it's really cute

If Sophia and Romeo or even Vengini get hurt he will give them a hug or even a small kiss where they got hurt as a way to try and help fix the thing that hurts

If P gets hurt he doesn't really react to it, hes so used to getting hurt from fighting against things like puppets, carcasses, and alchemist that small cuts or bumps don't bother him much

However when he does get hurt he will say things like "ow" or "hurt" to let someone know

While he was traveling Krat P found a plush dog and a wooden toy cat and he decided to take them back to the hotel, they're now his favorite toys and he takes them everywhere when little

He named the plush dog doggy and the toy cat kitty

His plush dog and toy cat are the only toys he won't really allow anyone to touch unless they need to be cleaned or fix, though even then he's not happy about it

After the situation where P didn't give Geppetto his P-Organ it really affected P and Geppettos relationship and the first time P regressed after he broke down

He even stopped calling Geppetto papa, didn't want him to care for him, and was somewhat scared of him for a time

P also stopped regressing around him

Geppetto ends up apologizing to him, works working on being a better father, and just over all trying to be better and because of this P starts calling him papa, allowing Geppetto take care of him while little, and regressing around him again

Geppetto actually ends up becoming another main caregiver for P

Things have been hard for P but the little family he basically gained has helped him so much

Age Regressor Honest John and Kitten Regressor Gideon (Pinocchio)

When they’re regressed, Honest John acts as Gideon’s “owner”. He’s not always the gentlest kid, but Giddy is a very forgiving kitten.

John LOVES to play pretend and is constantly making up new games. It can be hard to keep up with him - one minute he’s a professional tailor, the next he’s an author.

(He can’t read even when he’s not regressed, but he holds books open and makes up stories. Gideon loves them.)

Gideon can be a very destructive kitten. He loves knocking things over or ripping things up. John often puts him in time out, but the punishment never lasts long.

Gideon is non-verbal even when he’s an adult, but when he’s regressed it’s even harder to understand him because he becomes much less expressive. John can always understand him, though. (Or at least that’s what he claims.)

John is fascinated by high society and everything fancy. His favorite games involve being a lord or duke or other type of aristocrat, and hosting extravagant parties.

Gideon often ruins these parties by “hunting” John - stalking him for a time and then pouncing on him.

The pair frequently wrestle, and sometimes they get rougher than they should. It’s not unusual for one or both to end up bruised.

They always make up eventually, though it’s almost always Gideon who apologizes first. He doodles a messy scribble and presents it to John, and John in turn raves about the raw artistic talent on display.

When they nap John always ends up cuddling Gideon. He’s not usually a big hugger, but once he’s asleep he’s the snuggliest fox around.
