thank you so much for your ask! i remember that pre-senior summer anxiety so well, that weird mix of excitement and complete terror about the future. first of all, take a deep breath. you're already ahead of the game by thinking about this now instead of scrambling in october (like i did, classic me behavior).

let's talk about finding free money first, because who doesn't love that?

𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭: the absolute best scholarships are often the small local ones! check with your:

community foundation

parents' employers

local businesses

religious organizations (if applicable)

civic groups (rotary, kiwanis, elks lodge) these typically have way fewer applicants than national scholarships!

𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦: make a master document with:

your activities/leadership positions

community service hours (with specific impact numbers!)

awards/honors

special circumstances or hardships

career goals having this ready makes applications so much faster!

𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘴: those USD 250-500 scholarships add up and often have way fewer applicants.

about those grades... i've been there too! here's what helped me:

summer assignments you can get ahead on

extra credit opportunities

specific areas to focus on for improvement teachers love proactive students and are more likely to help you!

𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺: many schools offer summer courses to replace bad grades. check if yours does!

𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴: if you know what you're taking, watch youtube videos on the subjects now. even 15 minutes a day gives you a huge advantage.

𝘣𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮: senior year is chaotic with applications, so create a sustainable study routine now before the chaos hits. i have soo many posts about studying + routines for studying.

register for fall sat/act dates now (they fill up fast!)

use free resources like khan academy for test prep

consider whether test-optional schools might be a good fit

𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺:

remember that this is just one chapter in your story. i know it feels like everything depends on this year, but i promise you'll find your path even if it looks different than you expected.

Oh yeah of course!! Well currently my wife (halybs) and I have Rose City Comic Con confirmed, ... and then there's like a dozen we have applied to/are going to apply to soon, but still need to wait a few more weeks or months for confirmation/declination haha

But basically we are trying to attend as many events as possible in the Oregon-Washington area. Maybe some in California too if they're not too expenso :)

I feel like the whole thing where my writing ends up either revolving around Time/Mask or Legend in some form or other despite the main premise not strictly being about them is like parents saying "I don't have a favorite child" and then very obviously having one.

I don't think it'll be hard to guess who my favorite characters are.

Overly indulgent Rhovash? Why yes! Over indulgent in that these designs appeal to my specific headcanons (tatted up Tvash in lace also his nonexistent sinister snile and brick Rho with big wavy hair) and that it's unkempt. Originally a color study trying to replicate my Hersutism (an unfinished zine) concepts, and I chose Rho and Tvash because I wanted subjects that were yurious (and they’re infecting my mind, oh Inferno).

When I was applying for undergrad, I was fully in my "All my favorite characters are weird smart academic types" phase, because I Iike many undiagnosed twice-exceptional teens had carefully constructed a personal identity around a certain (incredibly harmful) societal idea of intelligence. It totally showed in the institutions I was applying to, too, and in particular, my motivation for choosing them.

This also lead to me making bad choices in the long run and was completely unsustainable, but I will admit that it was helpful when it came to motivating myself to complete my college applications. (Especially considering one of my top schools -- and the one with the most involved application -- happened to be a university that a beloved favorite character had attended but also, it is really, really good in retrospect that I did not get in there.)

I am happier and healthier now and have a much more sustainable image of success in my head, if an imperfect relationship with it, but this also means I have a complicated relationship with the fictional academic archetype and the type of characters I used to love, and that used to be motiviating to me. A lot of my favorite characters these days are ones who possess other traits I admire -- tenacity, kindness, a strong sense of justice, and a desire to change the world for the better. But I don't associate most of them with school or academic success at all; sometimes even the opposite.

All this to say, seeing as I have grad school apps due in exactly a month now. Save me Palamedes Sextus. Save me.

All these illustrations are tagged under #jen makes jedi art if you do/don't want to see doodles in between the usual photomode posts. Way back (like 11 years ago AHH) this blog was a sketchbook for non-school art, like the self portrait I'm still using as a profile pic, so it's been fun to get back to those roots. Eventually I'd love to make concept art or storyboards around the Jedi series, but definitely need more practice first.
