#Planting Concord Grape Vines

Hello I’m a certified plant person. For context, I live in New England so you’re getting northeastern North American plants I guess
One option: the eastern prickly pear cactus grows surprisingly far north and lives through the winters, but it shrivels up and looks dead during them and like lays on the ground. And then in spring it mostly pops back up, although sometimes it’ll lose a pad or two.
Any deciduous shrub will work for this, I think, but every year I think my concord grape vine is dead and it comes back, and I feel the same way about my blueberries most years. Some varieties are spindlier than others, but I have a very spindly Jersey blueberry for what that’s worth? My serviceberry tree also looks dead every year? Could also do raspberries if you like thorns. The grape vine may honestly be the best bet because when you prune it genuinely seems dead until one day…leaf buds.
If you want some more fun symbolism, a redbud tree is a deciduous tree/shrub. It’s in that in between size because it doesn’t usually grow past 10-15 feet, but it’s like a small tree. But! It loses its leaves in fall, obviously, but in spring before it does leaves it covers itself in pink flowers. Like the trunk and branches too. This is worth googling to describe better, but it hits fairly early in spring and brings me joy every year!
If you want sort of the opposite thing, witch hazel is a deciduous shrub, but it actually flowers in winter? Technically it’s either late fall or early spring depending on variety, but I mean it’ll do it with a foot of snow on the ground. Its flowers are so weird though, you should google them if you don’t know what I mean. But it flowers on otherwise dead looking branches?
For some wild spring symbolism. Hellebore. Those things are so poisonous. And so weird looking. And bloom in late winter rather than early spring. I live in Boston and they’re in a lot of people’s porch boxes and bloom in like, February. They noticeably are made of heftier stuff than regular flowers. And they kind of just disappear in between, I think? But again, they’ll straight up bloom through the snow and you don’t even necessarily know anything was there.
Anyway feel free to ask me plant questions whenever because zero of my friends care about the plant mania I’ve been experiencing for years 😅
this is all brilliant and extremely helpful, thank you so much!
you practically have me wanting to write a whole other fic based on plants just to explore your knowledge more
if I actually get around to exploring that idea, I will be sure to make a bat signal for you.
thanks again!

For the Love of my Cottagecore
Yes, I am very much a heterosexual guy that gets moved by cottagecore stuff. Most people think it’s just for girls, but I refuse to believe that. I am sure there are other heterosexual cottagecore guys out there as well, more than scared to come out an admit it. For me, cottagecore represents a sense of peace, simplicity, and connection to nature that goes beyond gender stereotypes. It’s about finding comfort and joy in the small things— wicker work, wood work, strumming guitars on a boat on a lake, flower gardens, herb beds, and vegetable patches that make me feel grounded and content. The rustic charm of cottages and cabins surrounded by stone laid walls resonates deeply with my love for a cozy, uncomplicated life, where everything is in its place and within easy reach. An old wood tool box in the corner of my work shop and a heavy leather apron ready to be warn. A grinding stone and a wall lined with tools. It’s a lifestyle that invites me to slow down, savor the moment, and enjoy the natural rhythms of the world around me.
Living on a small 50-acre farm in Chehalis, I experienced this lifestyle firsthand and it shaped my love for cottagecore even more. The warmth of the land, the smell of fresh earth, and the simple pleasures of rural life filled me with a profound sense of fulfillment. Mornings spent tending to flower beds and herb gardens, afternoons working in the vegetable patches, and evenings cuddled up in a cozy cabin or cottage—these are the moments that truly nourish my soul. I miss the quiet serenity of watching the sun set over fields of tall grasses, the gentle hum of bees in the blooms, and the feeling of the sun on my skin as I work in the garden.
My days on the farm were filled with a variety of animals—goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese, and even 2 sheep. My best friend was a royal palm turkey named Huck, who used to follow me everywhere and we would play tag. I miss him. And Buster the Highland Sheep became the "guard dog" of my goat heard. I loved caring for them all, seeing them thrive, and sharing my space with these creatures that brought so much life and joy to my environment. Raising animals gave me a sense of purpose and connection to nature that’s hard to find elsewhere. I enjoyed collecting fresh eggs, Making Feta Cheese, making wine from the concord grape orchard , baking tons of apple cakes and pies, the cakes and breads I baked with duck eggs, watching the goats play in the fields, and listening to the peaceful sounds of the farm at night. It was a life of hard work, but also one of deep reward and simple happiness. Wood carving and leather tooling till the sun went down. And all that mint tea I used to make (I had tons of mint everywhere)
One of my favorite memories is harvesting sunflowers and eating green beans right off the vine. There’s something incredibly satisfying about growing your own food and enjoying it in its freshest state. I also loved making wine from blackberries—an activity that combines patience, craftsmanship, and a touch of real magic. These small, tangible experiences—caring for plants, harvesting produce, creating something from nature—are what make cottagecore so meaningful to me. It’s about reconnecting with the earth and appreciating the cycles of growth, harvest, and renewal. Ever sit and watch chipmunks scamper on a pile of firewood? Its so therapeutic.
Star gazing at night was another favorite pastime. Lying under a vast, clear sky, I would marvel at the constellations and feel a sense of awe and humility. It’s a moment of quiet reflection, a reminder of how small we are in the grand scheme of things but also how beautifully interconnected everything is. That sense of wonder, the peacefulness of the night, and the simple pleasure of being present with the universe is something I cherish deeply. It’s these experiences that make cottagecore so appealing to me—they evoke a feeling of harmony with the natural world that’s rare in today’s fast-paced life.
Ultimately, my love for cottagecore isn’t about stereotypes or fitting into a mold; it’s about finding joy and meaning in a lifestyle that emphasizes authenticity, tranquility, and a deep bond with nature. It’s about creating a space where I can feel at peace, surrounded by the beauty of the natural world, and reconnecting with the simple pleasures of rural life. Whether I has tending my garden, caring for animals, building something or simply gazing at the stars, cottagecore offered me a sense of fulfillment and belonging that I wouldn’t trade for anything. And I would do it all again in a flash and dash if given the chance

Went out today and the world is cool and beautiful actually.

A cute community and pollinator garden featuring a giant concord grape vine that I took about 5 grapes off of.

A "mostly flat" path according to Google maps.

Would you boop the giant scrap cat's nose? Also featuring secret fish.

Pink umbrella alley for some reason.

Cute fall plant arrangement and the surprisingly clear creek.

The early history of the Yates County grape industry
By Jonathan Monfiletto

Of New York State’s 62 counties, Yates County holds the distinction of being the only one whose borders touch three of the 11 Finger Lakes – Canandaigua Lake makes up the western boundary of Yates County, while Seneca Lake makes up the eastern boundary, and Keuka Lake sits right in the middle of the county and forms part of its southern boundary. That means Yates County also hosts portions of three Finger Lakes region wine trails along the three respective lakes.
Grape growing and wine producing might seem like modern-day phenomena to the untrained eye – especially since it seems new vineyards and wineries start up in the region every year. In fact, the tradition of raising grapes and turning them into wine stretches back nearly two centuries in the Finger Lakes region as a whole and almost as long in Yates County. A 1927 article in The Chronicle-Express credits the Rev. William Bostwick, of Hammondsport, with growing the first grapes in what writer Everett Wright called the Keuka Lake District. A 1974 newspaper article dates Bostwick’s achievement as 1829 but also notes the Episcopalian minister came to the Keuka Lake shore from Connecticut with some grape root stocks that he planted in a garden behind his rectory.
“It is said that the early settlers in this county found vines growing luxuriantly in the thickets, where soil and moisture were congenial,” states a newspaper article titled “Lake Keuka Grape History.” With the perfect combination and settings of soil, moisture, and air, from Bostwick’s achievement at St. James Episcopal Church in Hammondsport arose an industry around the cultivation and harvesting of grapes.
According to Lewis Cass Aldrich in his 1892 History of Yates County, New York, J.W. Prentiss grew the first crop of grapes for wine in the Finger Lakes region, in the town of Pulteney in Steuben County – four miles south of the Yates County line – in 1836. The first vineyard planted in Yates County happened in November 1855 by W.W. Shirland on a property in Benton where the towns of Benton, Torrey, and Milo meet.
Shirland planted Isabella grapes in his first crop, but he switched to the Concord variety in 1866. “The vineyard is one of the best and most productive of the many in the county,” Aldrich wrote nearly 40 years after Shirland’s first crop. However, Aldrich calls John Mead “one of the pioneers of the business,” planting his first vineyard in 1861 also in Benton near the Torrey line. Mead’s vineyard measured three acres; Isabellas made up half an acre and Concords made up “a large proportion of the balance,” while some Catawbas were also planted. Eventually, Concords replaced the Isabellas and the Catawbas were abandoned – “The Concords are still in full vigor,” Aldrich wrote. Henry Rose, planting three acres of one of the earliest crop of Delaware grapes in 1861, was another pioneer grape grower in Benton, though his vineyard was located within the Penn Yan corporate limits. “This vineyard is still in good bearing, the original vines bearing good crops annually,” Aldrich wrote.
Aldrich describes several other early vineyards – among them Franklin Culver in Kinney’s Corners (now the hamlet of Bluff Point) in 1861 and Anson Dunlap on the Seneca Lake shore at Starkey Station in 1862; William F. VanTuyl with the first grapes on Bluff Point in 1862; and Joseph F. Crosby in Barrington in 1864, surprising his neighbors by planting a whopping six acres of grapes (though Frances Dumas’ A Good Country, A Pleasant Habitation states Shirland’s vineyard also amounted to six acres). “But few grapes were planted previous to 1865 and only in small vineyards,” Aldrich wrote. “The results warranted larger, until the valley is literally filled with good productive vineyards covering hundreds of acres. Between the years 1865 and 1870 planting was done at a rapid rate; land that had previously been counted of little value, in close proximity to the shores of the lakes, some of it steep and covered with a dense growth of young timber, being counted the best for grapes.”
Riding this post-Civil War wave was the Seneca Lake Grape and Wine Company, which bought property that included a vineyard James Valentine planted in 1862 and by 1867 extended the planting to 125 acres – “probably the largest vineyard in the State of New York,” at the time, according to Aldrich. According to Dumas, the company also formed the first winery in Yates County when in 1870 it built a large stone building to manufacture wines. “The business had already been started in another building now used for a barn,” Aldrich wrote. Several other large-scale vineyards followed suit – H.P. Sturtevant & Co. starting in 1865 at the end of Bluff Point, Pratt & Jillett beginning in 1864, and the McDowell vineyard and “many others … within a year or two succeeding,” Aldrich wrote. This included Eli R. Stever planting 25 acres of the first Iona vineyard on Bluff Point in 1867; Aldrich also notes the Gulick Brown vineyards and that of J. Warren Brown.
By 1872, more than 400 acres of grapes were planted in Jerusalem alone and 140 acres in the aptly-named Vine Valley area of Middlesex, “while J.T. Henderson, C.N. Wixom, the Seneca Lake Wine and Grape Company, together with many others, kept pace on the Seneca Lake,” according to Aldrich. However, at the same time, a surplus of grapes caused the price of the fruit to drop, and Aldrich wrote, “It looked as though enough grapes had been planted to supply all demands for a long time to come.” Many people who thought about growing grapes reconsidered; vineyard lands decreased in value. Within a few years, though, the demand for grapes – and thus the price of them – began going up again, and Yates County certainly established itself as a leader among the Finger Lakes region’s grape-growing counties. By 1892, as Aldrich noted, the county hosted 7,000 acres of vineyards with an average yearly yield of 10,000 tons.
When George C. Snow planted the first Niagara grapes in 1881 on the Esperanza Vineyards on the west branch of Keuka Lake, he shipped the fruit in what Aldrich described as “a box made of wood, holding ten pounds placed in crates holding six boxes.” Later, this became a configuration of five-pound boxes with eight boxes in a crate and then three-pound boxes with 12 in a crate. Hopkins Brothers – with their factory in Penn Yan – began the first grape box operation in Yates County, selling five-pound boxes in crates and three-pound boxes in crates. James W. Stever, in Branchport, and George W. Fenton, in Barrington, soon began manufacturing baskets that quickly replaced boxes for grapes. At first, 10-pound boxes were used to ship grapes until five-pound pony baskets became the standard. In Aldrich’s time, eight basket factories operated in Yates County with an annual output of 3 million baskets.
The growth of the grape industry in Yates County contributed toward the growth of the shipping industry. Aldrich points to three main rail companies that transported Yates County grapes: the Northern Central Railroad, which hosted its own fruit shipping business, from Canandaigua to beyond; the Barnes Fruit Line that carried grapes from Hammondsport along the Erie Railroad, and the Hollowell & Wise Fast Fruit Line that traveled over the Fall Brook Railroad. Yates County grapes were generally transported by steamboat over the lakes to the various railroad hubs.
From there, the grape and wine industry in Yates County and the Finger Lakes region continued to thrive. By the end of the 19th century, according to a 2011 article in the Finger Lakes Times, the whole region boasted more than 20,000 acres of vineyards and more than 50 wineries.

My Vineyard - Song of Songs 8:12
In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver”, and in chapter eight and verse twelve of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “my vineyard, which is mine, is before me” where we read,
My vineyard, which is mine, is before me:
you, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
The verse reads, “My vineyard, which is mine, is before me:” Solomon began with the words, “my vineyard” or “my, the bride's, garden or field of twining grape vines” “which is mine” which means “that exists as mine, the bride's”, “is before me” or “exists in front, in the face and in the presence of me, the bride”. Solomon shared how the bride spoke of her own field of planted vine that she could give to whomever she desired.
The verse goes on to say, “you, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.” Solomon continued with the words, “you, O Solomon” or “you, O Solomon whose name means peace and was son of David by Bathsheba and third king of Israel”, “must have a thousand” which means “have to receive a thousand pieces of silver”, “and those that keep the fruit thereof” or “and the people who guard, watch over, keep and farm the bride's fields” “two hundred” which means “two hundred pieces of silver”. Solomon shared how the bride mentioned to “Solomon”how he required a “thousand” pieces of silver, but she paid two hundred silver pieces to farmers caring for her field.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the bride mentioned the fields of Solomon and his requirement to receive one thousand silver pieces from the tenant farmers, but she also possessed a field in which she would pay two hundred pieces of silver to those who tend to its fruit. God truly owns everything, (See Psalms 24:1), and everything we possess belongs to Him. He desires to have an intimate personal relationship with us through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding that we are servants and managers of His belongings and we are to treat people fairly who help us with them. (See James 5:1-4)
Next time Solomon shares how the groom speaks to, “you that dwell in the gardens” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…

The soil in that area of our garden has a bit more clay than we are used to seeing, so we brought top soil from other areas of our property to fill around the roots. We also worked in some coffee grounds and a little compost to add nutrients and lower the pH a bit. It was so exciting to see all 10 Concord grape vines planted and staked by evening.

Sour Grapes
Concord grape developer Ephriam Wales Bull planted twenty thousand varieties of grapes on his Concord farm before he developed the perfect specimen-plump, sweet, early to ripen, and hardy enough to grow in rough New England soil. Early on, he sold his vines for up to one thousand dollars apiece, but the more vines that were distributed, the less he was able to sell, until finally his profits dried up like a raisin in the hot summer sun.
When Ephriam Bull died on September 26, 1895, he was almost penniless. Bull's grave now sits in Concord's Sleepy Hollow Cemetery where visitors can read his epitaph: HE SOWED, OTHERS REAPED.

We have grape news as September is prime grape season in our farmers markets! Not only is New York state famous for its apples (we are the Big Apple, of course), it also produces the third largest volume of grapes in the United States, behind only California and Washington state.
New York has a long history of grape cultivation that began in the 17th century when Dutch and Huguenot settlers planted grapes in the Hudson Valley. These colonists initially attempted to grow French and European vines that they brought with them across the Atlantic. However, the foreign vines quickly succumbed to pests, diseases and the harsh winters. Instead, the settlers cultivated native grapes that had been part of the native American diet for over 10,000 years.
The Hudson Valley went on to become an important table grape producer and the birthplace of American wine. In 1827, Richard Underhill established the first commercial winery in the region, making wine from native grapes. From 1920-1933, Prohibition illegalized the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol and many New York wineries were forced to close. Those that survived switched to growing grapes for non-alcoholic uses, such as raisins, jam, and grape juice.
Today, New York state is known for its famous wine regions and its tasty table grapes. While the uniformly sweet and simple flavor of supermarket grapes is designed for mass appeal, farmers market grapes boast complex flavor profiles with depth and dimension. Here are several locally grown grape varieties that you can easily find being sold at our fruit stalls this month.
Catawba Grape The Catawba grape originated on the East Coast, somewhere between the Carolinas and Maryland. This pinkish, purplish grape is thought to be a cross between the native North American species Vitis labrusca (also known as fox grape) with the European species Vitis vinifera. It was first cultivated in the early 19th century by German settlers in the Catawba River valley of North Carolina.
The Catawba grape was widely grown in central New York in the mid-1800s. It became wildly popular for its use in sparkling wines and rosés, gaining recognition as one of the first distinctively American wine grapes. Today, it is still highly regarded for its unique flavor profile and continues to be celebrated as an important part of American winemaking history. The grape has a pronounced "foxiness", which refers to the earthy and musky aromas commonly associated with Vitis labrusca grape varieties. When eaten fresh, Catawba grapes are seedy, firm and juicy with a sweet and spicy flavor.
Niagara Grape The North American Niagara grape is a variety of Vitis labrusca. The grape was developed in 1868 by Claudius L. Hoag and Benjamin W. Clark in Niagara County, New York through a cross of Concord grapes and white Cassady grapes. It is used as a table grape and for making wine, jams and juice. Niagara is the leading green grape grown in the United States.
Niagara grapes are poor shipping grapes, so are usually found being sold near to where they are grown in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, Washington and Ohio. While rarely available fresh outside these areas, Niagara grapes are well-known as the source of most of the white grape juice consumed by Americans.
The fresh Niagara grape is large and juicy, round to oval-shaped with a pale greenish-white color. The grape’s sweetly pleasant “foxy” aromas have been likened to that of candied lemon rind, Riesling, flowery jasmine, and high-toned, sugary muskiness.
Concord Grape The Concord grape is named after the town in Massachusetts where it was developed. Another Vitis labrusca cultivar, the Concord grape is the most well-known foxy grape and is considered to be the quintessential American grape. Concord grapes are prized as table grapes and juice grapes. They also are used to make grape jelly, grape pies, grape-flavored soft drinks, and candy. The fruit is sometimes used to make wine, particularly sacramental and kosher wine. Thanks to its popularity, the grape is now cultivated in many parts of the world.
The skin of a Concord grape is typically dark blue or purple and often is covered with a glaucous epicuticular wax "bloom" that can be rubbed off. It is a slip-skin variety, meaning the skin is easily separated from the fruit. Concord grapes are richly flavorful, musky and sweet. They have large seeds that are safe to eat and contain healthful nutrients, flavonoids and fiber. If you prefer not to eat the seeds, you can chew the whole grape, then use your teeth and tongue to sieve out the seeds.
We hope that all this juicy grapevine gossip has made your mouth water! There are plenty more New York state grape varieties to be discovered before the weather turns and grape season is over until next year. So be sure to head to your Down to Earth farmers market this weekend to pick up lush bunches of these delectably tasty, locally grown fruits.

FAQ Can Cats eat Grapes? Is It Dangerous or Safe?
FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes? Is it dangerous or safe?
Grapes and raisins are well-known to be toxic to dogs, but did you know grapes are also toxic to cats? We don't know why grapes are toxic to pets, but the risks they pose are severe.
Can Cats Eat Grapes?
Cats should not eat grapes or grape-related products. Grapes and raisins have been identified as toxic to both dogs and cats. The exact substance causing this toxicity is unknown, but even a small amount can cause serious kidney damage or failure. It is best to keep grapes and raisins away from your cats at all times.
Can Cats Eat Grapefruit?
Grapefruit is also not recommended for cats. While it is not as toxic as grapes, it can still cause gastrointestinal upset due to its acidity and potential for causing an upset stomach.
Can Cats Eat Grape Stems, Jelly, Vines, and Leaves?
"FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes?" All parts of the grape plant, including stems, vines, and leaves, should be avoided because they can contain the same toxic substances as the grapes themselves. Grape jelly, which is made from grapes, should also be avoided due to the potential presence of toxic compounds.
Can Cats Eat Purple Grapes and Grape Tomatoes?
The color of the grape has no effect on its toxicity, so purple grapes are just as dangerous as other varieties. While grape tomatoes are a different type of fruit and not the same as regular grapes, it is generally recommended to avoid feeding them to cats due to their small size and potential for digestive issues.
Can Cats Eat Grapes, Grapeseed Oil, and Grapeseed?
Answer to the question "FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes?" Cats should not consume raw grapes, grapeseed oil, or grapeseed. Grapeseed oil and grapeseed contain compounds that may be toxic to cats, and as previously stated, raw grapes are toxic.
Can Cats Eat Grapes and Strawberries Together?
While strawberries are not toxic to cats in small amounts, they are not a natural part of a cat's diet and can cause digestive upset. It is generally best to avoid feeding cats a mixture of grapes and strawberries, or any other fruits.
Can Cats Eat Cotton Candy Grapes and Sea Grapes?
Cotton candy Grapes are a type of grape that has been bred to taste like cotton candy. However, because they are still grapes, they pose the same toxicity risk as regular grapes. Sea grapes, on the other hand, are not grapes but rather a type of seaweed. They are not toxic to cats, but they are also not a common food source for them.
Can Cats Eat Frozen and Skinless Grapes?
"FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes?"
Frozen grapes retain the same toxic properties as fresh grapes. Because removing the skin does not remove the toxic compounds found in grapes, skinless grapes are still unsafe for cats to consume.
Can Baby Cats Eat Grapes?
Grapes are toxic to kittens, especially young ones. It is critical to keep grapes and raisins away from kittens because their small size and developing systems make them more vulnerable to harm.
Can Cats Eat Grapes?
Can Cats Eat Concord and Green Seedless Grapes?
FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes? Concord and green seedless grapes, like other grape varieties, are toxic to cats. The absence of seeds or a different color does not change the fact that they contain harmful compounds.
Can Cats Drink Grape Juice, White Grape Juice, and Sparkling Grape Juice?
Grape juice, regardless of color or carbonation, contains the same harmful compounds as grapes. "FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes?" Cats should avoid both regular and white grape juices.
Can Cats Eat Grape Nuts and Grape Popsicles?
Grape nuts are a cereal product that contains no grapes or grape-related ingredients. They are not toxic to cats, but they are also not suitable for their diet. Grape popsicles are most likely made from grape juice and should be avoided due to the grape content.
Can Persian Cats Eat Grapes?
The breed of the cat has no effect on its susceptibility to grape toxicity. All cats, regardless of breed, should avoid grapes and grape products.
Can Cats Eat a Grape? Can a single grape kill a cat?
FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes? While a single grape may not cause immediate harm, grape toxicity can be unpredictable. Some cats may experience severe symptoms after just one grape, whereas others may tolerate a small amount without obvious symptoms. However, there is no safe level, and even a small amount can cause kidney damage or failure. Any amount of grapes fed to cats is not worth the risk.
"FAQ Can Cats Eat Grapes?" To summarize, grapes and grape-related products are toxic to cats and can cause serious health problems, particularly kidney damage or failure. It's always best to err on the side of caution and avoid feeding grape products to your feline friends. If you suspect your cat has eaten grapes or another toxic substance, contact your veterinarian right away for advice and treatment.

Into the Garden of Nuts - Song of Songs 6:11
In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom asked, “Who is she that looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?”, and in chapter six and verse eleven of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride said, “I went down into the garden of nuts” where we read,
I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley,
and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.
The verse begins, “I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, ...” Solomon began with the words, “I went down” or “I the bride descended and went downward” “into the garden of nuts” which means “toward the planted field or plot pertaining to nuts of a tree” “to see the fruits of the valley” or “to look at, observe and inspect the fresh green plants or shoots within the wadi, torrent-valley or stream bed”. Solomon shared how the bride descended to the planted field where “nuts” were grown to observe the green shoots within the wadi or torrent-valley.
The verse goes on to say, “... and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded.” Solomon continued with the words, “and to see” or “and to observe, notice and discern” “whether the vine flourished” which means “if and in case the twining grape vine was budding, sprouting or sending out shoots”, “and the pomegranates budded” or “and the pomegranate fruit trees bloomed or blossomed”. Solomon shared how the bride said she would go to the “garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley” and discover if the twining grape “vine” bloomed or the “pomegranate” trees were blossoming.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the bride descended to the planted field where “nuts” were grown, and there she would observe the fresh green shoot within the wadi. She wanted to see if the grape “vine” was sprouting and the “pomegranate” fruit was blossoming. Once again we see the importance of the production of “fruit” in this story, and this time the “bride” is descending to notice whether any substance exists. God wants us to be in a personal intimate relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead three days later. Anyone who puts their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and given His Holy Spirit so we may produce “fruit” in our service to Him in His Kingdom. (See John 15:16) We would do well to examine our lives and be certain we are producing “fruit” so the Lord may receive of the same when we stand before Him some day. (See 1 Corinthians 11:31-32)
Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, “my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
