FORM-HOLDER:

A term to describe beings/creatures/things who appear as a specific lifeform or object most of the time, but did not originally appear that way (in the context of polymorphism, transmutation, and shapeshifting)

Meant for those who appear to be a certain creature or thing and look that way through maintaining a prolonged form-state (voluntarily or involuntarily). 

identity congruency to the prolonged form-state is not required, but can often be the reasoning for continued form-holding. 

examples: 

a polymorph that appears as a specific animal most of the time, but was originally amorphous. 

a polymorph that appears as a specific thing most of the time, but occasionally presents with different appearances. 

a shapeshifter that has a prolonged transformation-state, only returning to their ‘original’ form for short periods of time.

Being a polymorph is a bit of a pain in the ass sometimes, it's like does this strong recurring shift a Serious Breakthrough or not? Does it matter that it's not a permanent, 24/7 thing if it's affecting my lived experience and self-image so?

So, polymorphy... I have a theory as to where ours came from. It's less that we're specific, shapeshifting entities and more that the brain just plain... wasn't loaded with a consistent self-perception/sense of "me" for whatever reason.

So instead it plugs garbage data from elsewhere into this slot, usually something visually interesting it saw in the surrounding environment recently that it flags as "me". Sometimes it's an oddness as brief as getting a flash of a random wolf pic I just looked at doing what I'm doing right now, sometimes I get quite a strong shift of something like a hearttype, or someone from a hyperfixation, or a character from my daydreams that I'm spending a lot of time thinking about. These tend to last around a day and come with things like phantom limbs and the inescapable sense that my body's shape is Wrong. This is why what I've called a kintype before is just a bunch of things that match my "internal wavelength" the most rather than anything specific, feels the most correct to be.

This is also why my most common monster manifestation is "humanoid but there's something indescribably fucked up and reptillian about me" or an animal headed humanoid. Because my brain ambiently absorbs the presence of humanoid limbs just by going about my day, but I can't see the body's face unless I'm staring in a mirror (something I REALLY prefer not to do). It's a fitting appearance for an nd-inhuman, for a liminal beast skulking around the edges of human society, spreading discomfort among those it only somewhat resembles..

Adrian's form is a bit less chaotic, he's a fictionflickerer that absorbs the appearance and identity of a character from the mind's latest hyperfixation that is most similar to him with some minor deviations. And yet it often takes effort not to shift, still he cycles between other, temporary forms at times, all creatures mirrored that match his unique but indescribable essence.

A mouse that lives near a graveyard one day, the personification of a distant world's storms the next...as much as I wish I could say I was Definitely One Thing sometimes, at the end of the day polymorphy is something I quite like experiencing.

Sorta rant thing

Being a polymorph is so weird. I can’t seem to fully grasp what I look like, I got the basic idea down (a completely black alien void-like being that’s speckled with stars, has “paws”, large eyes, and long pointed “ears”) but other traits seem to flicker in and out of my mind. Sometimes I have legs, sometimes colored eyes, sometimes “fur” tufts on the side of my head, sometimes sharp teeth, I don’t know. I wish I could get my default/preferred form down 100% but it keeps changing. Sorta like I can mix and match traits involuntarily.

I’m not sure if the same happens to other polymorphs I just wish I understood why this is. I’m scared of being invalid for this IDK what to do.

The mortifying ordeal of getting really long fictionflickers/modelocked into a form whenever the brain gets a new serious hyperfixation leading to all manner of identity confusion for both the host and myself.

To be honest, I don't mind it, but if we sounded confused/contradictory about just where Jasper from Dragon Quest XI fit into our identity let it be known that we had no fucking idea either.
