one thing that I think we lose by the arts and history just not being emphasized the way they should be is the concept that things like the strikes are not "art ending" because the industry that currently commodifies the art is not the art
rather, systems through which art is produced and funded must change and have changed throughout history. for example, the patronage system of renaissance italy does not bear much practical resemblance to the systems through which visual art is commissioned today. the studio system of the Golden Age of Hollywood dominated much of the moviemaking world, and then collapsed in the late 40s (which to many probably seemed as potentially devastating, or much more so, as the dual strikes do now)
independent cinema may not seem to be as big a thing right now.... but it still very much is, and there was a time not long ago when indies were MUCH more visually prevalent than they are this moment
so yes, there is a chance that the way in which people make certain types of art changes quite a bit because of the strikes (and I really, really hope it does) but as long as there are people, there will be art; as long as there are people, there will be movies, because people figuring out how to make movies is kind of equivalent to people figure out how to paint. now that we know we can, we won't stop.
BUT the question is really, will these people be compensated properly for this work, or will it become even more relegated to the rich who can afford to do it, and if so, how will that affect the quality and diversity of the art (badly)
