It's cold enough tonight that for the first time since April, Arson and Larceny are back in the house. I'm enjoying all their little settling-in noises as they get their nest in order.

Meanwhile, I've opened the aviary proper up for Malice and Vice to access through the catio, and they're out there horking down grass in the dark like a couple of vampiric cows. Nobody tell them they're obligate carnivores.

I do! They are fun to have! They are very very dumb and I love that about them. They do poop though, so you gotta deal with that. And Puddleglum (the male) will go on long stints where he won’t shut up, he must coo at the world and he circular breaths. Here are the sweet idiots!

Sitting here pondering if my doves’ names, Puddleglum and Truancy, could even remotely be linked together. One was named by me after one of my favorite Narnia characters, the other was named by @hellenhighwater , a lawyer who enjoys naming her animals after crimes. But what could a marshwiggle and the act of truanting possibly have to do with each other? Puddleglum certainly never skipped out on anything.

And then I’m like

“Yes but Jill and Eustace were DEFINITELY truants that day by leaving school grounds upon going to Narnia. Even if it was technically only for a minute or so thanks to time shenanigans.”

So there you go. Puddleglum shall continue to be tangentially associated with the practice of skipping out on school. Problem solved.

Baby Dove Looking For A Home!

Hello all! Some of you may know that I have a mated pair of domestic ringneck doves! One is Puddleglum, this big, doofy, cackling, gray nerd.

And the other is Truancy, the prettiest peach lady and unrepentant seed glutton (also the daughter of @hellenhighwater ’s doves Arson and Larceny).

What you may not know is these two lay eggs like clockwork. Since I don’t know a lot of people looking for doves, I normally replace these with fakes or make the eggs nonviable before giving them back, and they’ll sit on them for two weeks before taking a week to make new ones. But this time, I MESSED UP—turns out I did not make them nonviable properly, and by the time I double-checked, I couldn’t just destroy them since they had gotten started.

SO, I am looking for a home for a baby dove or two! Here are the goobers at about a week old as of today (July 15):

One is way smaller than the other, so I waited to post about them until I was sure it was getting enough feed and care from the parents. But it seems to be doing really well now! They should both be old enough for new homes in about a month.

I already have one person interested, so I really just need one more. They are free to a good home (I’d like to see pics of your potential cage setup, and I can offer tips to new dove owners). I can’t gaurantee gender unless we do a DNA test, but I can get that done for $20 (for one bird) if you’re willing to reimburse me for that. I also offer a sandwich baggie of safflower seeds, the doves’ favorite snack.

I’m in southwest Ohio and am willing to drive a bit to meet you if needed. My family also has an alpaca farm that is hosting our August Alpaca Day on Aug. 19, if you want to make a trip of it! :D

Thanks for the ask! Let’s do this:

1. I have a chinchilla (Pikachewbacca aka Chewie, female) two cats (Stormy and Shuri, both female), and a mated pair of ringneck doves (Puddleglum and Truancy). The most animals I have ever had at one time was during a summer like five years ago when I had Chewie the chinchilla, Stormy and her four kittens, my dog Mipha (no longer with us sadly), and four baby bunnies I raised for a couple months after their mom got hit by a lawn mower. I sometimes have to resist the urge to get more animals XD

2. I enjoy cosplay sometimes, and while I am not super active about it, I once won 2nd place in the Novice category at the Cincinnati Comic Expo’s cosplay contest! I was wearing my homemade original mando armor!

3. I am a Christian, and I am highly grateful Jesus is merciful and loving and patient with us when we struggle, whether with our faith or just life in general. He loves you, too, and I hope you come to know this someday if you don’t already. :)

GUYS. I have captured the absolute peak picture of my ringneck dove Puddleglum. It is just simple the Most image of him.

That's a wire with plastic butterfly I kept from a broken motorized cat toy, but now Puddle has identified it is a Long Thin Thing and thus Perfect For The Nest.

Look at this guy. Not a thought in his head. Nothing but sheer Dad Instincts and a Vague Uncertainty about why I am in his face. An absolute derp. Peak dove energy.

And yes, I can report that upon giving him a lift back to the nest, his wife Truancy aka Chicken gladly accepted the offering to place with her fake egg she doesn't know I swapped for the real one. Nature is beautiful (and stupid).
