evergreen, but the CritRole fandom's inability to distinguish between in-character (as in, actually happened in the narrative), out-of-character (as in, above table), and out-of-character using character voice for comedy (as in, above table) is truly something. I feel like 97% of complaints about characterization at any given time is tripping over this inability to tell the difference with the added problem of people (including but not exclusive to this) believing one time is an established pattern
#the “single again” jokes from the Nein C3 episodes aren't like actually.... things Fjord and Jester said.#That's an above table joke. Just like how the flesh tongue is an above table joke.#The constant “why is Fjord so dismissive about the wedding and being mean to Jester” he isn't? if you separate IC from OOC riffing?#Most of the stuff you're thinking about isn't actually in character and didn't actually happen in narrative?#And you're allowed to not find it to your taste even as an ooc joke but like some of it isn't actually happening in narrative#The time it DOES come up in narrative Fjord explains his enthusiasm's muted bc he's distracted thinking about fighting godeaters on the moon#But for some reason the multiple instances of him sincerely expressing interest in the wedding is ignored?#Like Fjord does ask Jester to add blue to the colors. He tells her maybe a honeymoon on the moon would be fun.#He gently tells her a quick and small ceremony out of fear they'll die won't satisfy her#And that he's been distracted with the events at hand but he does want her to get the big wedding she dreams of#And doesn't want to do a quick one now to spoil that for her and he's looking forward to it.#He IS actually exasperated at the scale and that makes sense! He's characterized as shy and reserved.#But like the jokes he's trying to get out of it are.... above table just like Jester snapping at him for it.#Similarly Taliesin's “get your shit together children” isn't something Caduceus actually said.#I feel like Travis gets this a lot bc he loves OOC in character voice but it's less obvious with Chet or Grog.#So people don't note it when it happens to them even though there's plenty he says in Chet or Grog voice that didn't actually happen.#Critical Role things

Weird question maybe but genuinely how do you manage to read so much and actually Retain Information?
honestly it depends, some stuff slides right off my brain like water on a smooth rock, but history has been an intense area of interest for me since I was about six (american revolution babyyyyy, back when I lived in new england I used to spend my weekends going to reenactments and museums) and if something piques my interest, then everything related to that thing will forcibly take up space in my brain against my will. I did not care about the roman economy until crassus took over my life, and now there's about a century of roman history where I'm fascinated by the economy.
it's also extremely difficult for me to to keep focused on a singular train of thought (read about Caesar's march on Rome, immediately jumped to a book about the Siege of Florence, then jumped back to Trebonius and siege warfare), so when I read a book or start researching something, I have an open notebook near by and I'll jot notes/thoughts/whatever else down in it because I remember information with more clarity if I write it down by hand, especially because I struggle to retain information I read on a screen (I also don't remember notes I take on a laptop or on my phone, it's gotta be on paper) and when I'm done reading, I'll summarize the interesting parts down for my future self

since it's the start of a new year and I'm a bookworm, I figured I'd share some of the aspec books I read in 2023. I've added any of the big content warnings I can think of as well as a link to the books on storygraph where there are more in depth content warnings.
Fiction:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wren Martin Ruins It All by Amanda DeWitt follows the titular character Wren Martin during senior year of high school as he becomes student council president and fights his vice president to try and get the school's Valentine's Day dance shut down. Wren is very much an externally grumpy person who becomes much more loveable as you get to know him and see the reasoning behind his grumpiness. Rep includes asexual main character and an aromantic side character, and note this book is a romance.
Is Love The Answer by Uta Isaki is a coming of age manga following Chika as she tries to find the answer to who she is and explores her identity. This book is full of aro and ace rep with different life experiences. CW for aphobia and attempted SA.
Just Lizzie by Karen Wilfred is a middle grade book following Lizzie in how a science class assignment helped lead her to an understanding of her asexuality. At the same time, Lizzie is having to adjust to a new home and changes in what was once familiar and safe. CW for aphobia, harassment.
Non-fiction:
*note: these books cover some triggering topics in different parts of them, including racism, SA, aphobia, and more

Ace and Aro Journeys by The Ace and Aro Advocacy Project (TAAAP) is a really great overview of aspec identities, it gives more time to aro identities than a lot of other books, and provides quotes and information from people on various parts of the spectrums. This book brings in some intersectionality, though it is more broad than a deep dive.
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality by Sherronda J. Brown, which has been my favorite read. This book is fantastic if you're ready for a deep dive into intersectionality and some deeper history on asexuality. This book, despite being very short, is a much heavier read content-wise, but it is very thought provoking and will stick with you. Each chapter gives you content warnings up front for the materials that will be addressed in the chapter. Personally, this book has been my favorite book on the subject and I intend on reading it many more times to capture more of the nuance.

TFW laser-tag
The first time the team goes, it's fun. Jack and Dean team up against Mary and Cas, and Sam and other!Bobby lose early and badly.
The second time, Jack invites...Arthur Ketch. (He loves to be regaled by Ketch's tales of spy missions and subterfuge. To TFW's grin, Jack grins wide and hangs off Ketch's every word.)
ANYWAY, Ketch brings his prickly bestie, other!Charlie, and despite everyone gunning for them, Ketch and Charlie do pretty damn well in the game.
Until for reasons unknown, Cas knocks Ketch out with the butt of his laser-gun and is banned from the premises.

Silly snippet of something from the early days of Solona & Loghain's weird not-quite-friendship that I already know won't make the final cut, but I still like the dialogue:
“I know you think it’s childish, pining after someone when the world is ending.”
[loghain thinks on it for a moment, shrugs reluctantly] “You’re on the run. Every day could be your last… You find comfort where you can.”
[solona’s dying to ask who he’s really talking about re: himself. instead, raises her eyebrow] “And who has me on the run, exactly?”
“Currently, the archdemon.”
“A well-worded answer.” [smirk]
“Thank you.” [smirk. long pause. smirk fades.] “Alistair is a fool, though.”
“We’re done talking now.”

If Igor were to have a singing voice, it has to be someone who has the perfect vocal range, either Tom Hulce, Jeremy Jordan, Bryce Pinkham, or (my personal opinion) Hugh Jackman.
