Recent studies suggest that a hypermetabolic state that damages the mitochondria results in a hypometabolic state in chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), long COVID, and fibromyalgia (FM). They also suggest that something in the blood, serum, or plasma is damaging the mitochondria in these diseases.
We’re not done with the mitochondria, though – far from it! Now we look at a bevy of recent long-COVID mitochondrial studies suggesting that mitochondrial dysfunction affects more than energy production and which illuminate what may have gone wrong in the mitochondria.
Muscle biopsies of 120 long-COVID patients who had ended up in the ICU found that a year later their muscles had higher levels of immune cells involved in tissue repair and reduced activity of the 2nd and fourth mitochondrial complexes. The authors concluded that there was “aberrant repair and altered mitochondrial activity in skeletal muscle.”
They couldn’t explain how a respiratory illness affected the muscles but a subsequent study did. A hamster model found that the coronavirus suppressed the genes associated with the muscle fibers, protein production, both sides of the mitochondrial energy production process (Krebs cycle and electron transport chain), and fat breakdown.
As it was doing that, it unleashed a barrage of inflammatory factors (IFN-α, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) which triggered a shift from relying mostly on aerobic energy production to the less effective process of anaerobic energy production (glycolysis).
The authors concluded that using treatments “that can boost mitochondrial functions, enhance protein synthesis, and inhibit protein degradation” may be useful for treating muscle fatigue in long COVID.
Next, a muscle study assessing “maximal fatty acid oxidation (MFO)” (i.e. energy produced by the breakdown of fats during exercise) found significantly reduced levels of fatty acid oxidation in long COVID and a “premature shift” from relying on fats to carbohydrates to powering their cells.
This was important because the body prefers to burn fats during exercise and because fats play key roles in both parts of the mitochondrial energy production process. The finding wasn’t so surprising, though. Problems with carnitine – which transports fatty acids into the mitochondria – have popped up in both long COVID and ME/CFS – suggesting that the fatty acids that power the mitochondria during exercise may not be getting into them.
A review paper asserted that increased free radical production (reactive oxygen species (ROS)) by the mitochondria both pushes the cell into a state of anaerobic energy production but also pushes the immune system to activate the inflammatory or innate immune response and away from the adaptive immune response that targets pathogens. This benefits the viruses by providing the substrates they need to grow and allows them to escape from the immune system.
Several researchers, including Avindra Nath, believe that the immune system tries to compensate for the impaired adaptive immune defense by ramping up the innate immune response. Nath believes this shift plays a central role in ME/CFS.
They proposed that treatments to boost mitochondrial functioning and reduce the production of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) (free radicals) will be beneficial.
Lastly, a review asserted that the predominant view of the mitochondria as the main energy producers of the cell is misguided and incomplete. Harkening back to Naviaux’s characterization of the mitochondria as the primary threat-sensing part of the cell, the authors believe the mitochondria regulate the “physiological processes at the level of the cell, organ and organism”; i.e. the mitochondrial problems affect much more than low energy levels and fatigue.

Thank you! Oh, gosh, where to start?
So, technically, 'radiation' can refer to all kinds of electromagnetic radiation from visible light to radio waves to microwaves to UV to what everyone actually MEANS when they say radiation: ioninzing radiation. That's the stuff that has enough energy to ionize other atoms - and therefore can cause damage to things like humans. It's what you think of when you hear about radioactivity, nuclear power plants, or the Chernobyl accident.
This is going under a cut now because it's getting VERY long:
Ionizing radiation, though, is not one singular thing - it breaks down into a bunch of other types. Some of them are particles with mass (alpha particles which are essentially helium nuclei minus the electrons, beta particles with are JUST electrons but they go really fast, neutrons which are also like a very high-energy version of the ones inside of atoms) and some of them are essentially weird light (gamma rays, x-rays).
But mostly people talk about alpha, beta, and gamma radiation when it comes to radioactivity. I'm honestly not sure why. I think they might be more common in nature on earth than some of the other stuff?
Other key point - radiation is all around us all the time. So are various radioactive substances - stuff that emits radiation. You've heard of carbon dating? That works because some tiny percentage of all the carbon on earth is carbon-14, which is radioactive. That means you, a being made of carbon, are slightly radioactive.
Also if you've heard the whole 'bananas are radioactive' thing - yes it's true, no it won't hurt you, and that radioactivity comes from the potassium-40 isotope, which makes up a small fraction of all the potassium on earth. You, a human being, also contain potassium. This also contributes to you being slightly radioactive.
Outer space is radioactive for various reasons, including that stars are powered by nuclear fission reactions. And they're just spewing radiation across the cosmos. Some of that winds up on earth and we call it cosmic radiation.
The amount of radiation we're all exposed to from normal, everyday stuff is pretty harmless, and it's called background radiation. In addition to carbon, potassium, and outer space, it comes from lots of other things including rocks and soil (uranium, for instance, is naturally occurring and way more widespread than you'd think, though often within other minerals - it's not always uranium ore) and various human activities (remember how we exploded some nuclear bombs like eighty years ago? some of that stuff's still floating around). Medical scans like x-rays are also a fairly significant contributor to the average annual dose of radiation. There are way more human activities that create or concentrate radioactive substances, but I won't get into all of them because this is long enough already.
When radiation gets dangerous is at levels significantly above background. Remember what I said about it ionizing other atoms? Well, sometimes that damages things like cells and DNA. Your body has mechanisms to try and repair that damage, but they don't always work perfectly and if those systems get overwhelmed by really high levels of damage, you've got problems.
Radiation can hurt you in two main ways: acute and long-term problems. The most obvious acute example is radiation sickness - radiation burns are also a thing. That happens when you get a BIG dose in a short period of time. If you get a smaller dose, especially repeated small doses over time, that's where increased cancer risk becomes a problem.
Oh, I forgot to mention - the different between radiation exposure and contamination is key here. Exposure is like when you get an x-ray - the radiation passes through you and either leaves ro gets absorbed. You are not carrying x-rays around with you afterwards. Contamination is like if you touched a piece of uranium ore and got dust on your hands - you are carrying the source of radioactivity around on your person. It is continually producing radiation which you are being exposed to, and you can spread the dust or whatever to other people and objects. You can get rid of it by washing your hands - most of the time.
Contamination on your skin isn't that bad because you can just wash it off. However, if your food or water has radioactive stuff in it, or if the dust is in the air and you breathe it... that's bad. Potentially very bad. Your body tends to absorb that stuff and hang onto it - how long depends on what nuclide the radioactive material is made of. A nuclide is like an isotope, but for radioactive stuff. You know how isotopes are slightly different versions of elements, with different numbers of neutrons than usual? Nuclides are slightly different versions of elements which have different amounts of nuclear stability - some are stable and some are radioactive, meaning that their nucleus is unstable and needs to emit radiation in order to stabilize itself. That's why radiation happens. Radionuclides are the unstable ones.
Anyways, some nuclides get absorbed into the body really easily and are hard to get out once they're in there. Some are more dangerous than others. Your body is going to slowly excrete them over time, and they'll also be decaying, but they can still be in there long enough to cause plenty of problems.
One of the radionuclides that was really concerning after Chernobyl was Iodine--131. This is because your thyroid loves to absorb iodine - any iodine. It does not know or care the difference between the normal versus radioactive stuff. And if it absorbs the radioactive iodine, then it's gonna hang out there for a while and damage your thyroid cells, which can cause cancer. And after Chernobyl, that's exactly what it did. People who were nearby did experience higher than usual rates of thyroid cancer in the years afterwards.
So. Internal contamination can be scary. Radioiodine is actually one of a few radionuclides where an effective medical treatment exists. However, that comes with a LOT of caveats. The drug is called potassium iodide, and it works by flooding the thyroid with safe, non-radioactive iodine before or shortly after exposure to radioiodine. The goal is to make your thyroid absorb that instead and go 'no thanks, I'm full' when the radioactive stuff comes along. Then your body will excrete it faster and it won't cause as much damage.
But potassium iodide (aka KI, because potassium is K on the periodic table) only works if it's taken within a few hours before or after exposure, and then it only works for 24 hours. It can have serious side effects if taken for too long, and people can be allergic to it - especially people will shellfish allergies, for some reason. And it won't protect you from any other type of radiation - only radioiodine.
With most other internal radioactive contamination, you just gotta treat symptoms.

Chapter Sixteen: Facing Consequences
Summary: The Enterprise is in trouble for going rogue to save Spock.
            Captain’s Log: We’re in the third month of our Vulcan exile due to our numerous violations of Starfleet regulation and our battle with the Klingons, who demand our extradition. Dr. McCoy, with a fine sense of historical irony, has decided on a name for our captured Klingon vessel—HMS Bounty. And like those mutineers of five hundred years ago, we, too, have a hard choice to make.
            “Dr. McCoy?” said Kirk.
            “Aye, sir,” said Bones.
            “Mr. Scott?”
            “Aye, sir,” said Scotty.
            “Uhura?”
            “Aye, sir.”
            “Chekov?”
            “Aye, sir.”
            “Sulu?”
            “Aye, sir.”
            “(L/N)?”
            “Aye, sir.”
            Kirk nodded solemnly. “Let the record show that the commander and the crew of the late Starship Enterprise have voted unanimously to return to Earth to face the consequences of their actions in the rescue of their comrade Captain Spock. Thank you all. Repair stations, please.” The crew nodded and split off. “Scotty.”
            “Aye, sir?” said Scotty.
            “How soon can we be underway?” asked Kirk.
            “Give me one more day, sir,” said Scotty. “Damage control is easy. Reading Klingon, that’s hard. (L/N) speaks a bit, but it’s still taking time after translation.”
            “You’d think they could at least send a ship,” sighed Bones. “It’s bad enough to be court-martialed and spend the rest of our lives mining borite, but to have to go home in this Klingon flea trap…” He shook his head.
            “It was all for a good cause,” said Kirk, looking over at where (Y/N) was sitting with Spock. He still hadn’t entirely recovered, but with (Y/N)? He was himself. Spock’s heart had never died. “And there’s a few things we could learn from this flea trap. It’s got a cloaking device that cost us a lot.”
            “Can we at least cloak the stench?” huffed Bones, walking off.
            Kirk shook his head in amusement and walked over to (Y/N) and Spock. “How are you two?”
            “I have finished the test program of my intelligence,” said Spock.
            “And?” said Kirk.
            “The results are that I remain intelligent as ever,” said Spock.
            (Y/N) smiled. “And as humble as ever.”
            “Stating a face is neither humble nor arrogant,” replied Spock.
            At least some things never change, thought Kirk.
            “And I have made a decision,” said Spock. “I will return to Earth to offer testimony. My mind was present throughout the events of your travels to Vulcan, and my body was on Genesis. And—” he looked at (Y/N) “—you committed these acts for me. I must repay that.”
            “Not very logical of you,” teased (Y/N).
            “I am illogical about you, t’hy’la,” said Spock.
            (Y/N) grinned at him and touched their fingers to his. Whatever happened, they had Spock back. They were happy.

            “Report,” said Kirk, stepping aboard the HMS Bounty. Another day had passed, and it was nearly time to leave to return to Earth and face the consequences of their actions.
            “Communications systems all ready, sir,” said Uhura. “Communications officer as ready as she’ll ever be.”
            Kirk chuckled, and (Y/N) smiled.
            “Mr. Sulu?” asked Kirk.
            “Guidance is functional,” said Sulu. “Onboard computer will interface with Federation Memory Bank.”
            “Weapons systems,” said Kirk.
            “Operational, Admiral,” said Chekov. “Cloaking device now available on all flight modes.”
            “I’m impressed. That’s a lot work for a short voyage,” said Kirk.
            “We are in an enemy vessel, sir,” said Chekov. “I do not wish to be shot down on the way to our own funeral.”
            “Good thinking,” said (Y/N).
            “Engine Room. Report, Scotty,” said Kirk.
            “We’re ready, sir,” said Scotty. “I’ve converted the dilithium sequencer into something less primitive, and, Admiral, I replaced the Klingon food packs. They were giving me sour stomach.”
            “Is that what is was?” sighed Kirk. He clapped his hands together. “Prepare for departure.” He looked at the Vulcan workers finishing their repairs before heading out. “Saavik.” She looked at him. “This is goodbye.”
            “Yes, Admiral,” said Saavik.
            “Thank you,” said (Y/N). “For protecting Spock on Genesis.”
            Saavik bowed her head. “It was logical.”
            (Y/N) smiled.
            “Admiral, I have not had the opportunity to tell you about your son,” said Saavik, looking at Kirk again. “David died most bravely. He saved Spock. He saved us all. I thought you should know.”
            Kirk’s gaze went to the ground, and clouds of grief billowed around him. However, he was also proud of David. “Thank you, Saavik.”
            She nodded and turned to address Spock. “Good day, Captain Spock. May your journey be free of incident.”
            “Live long and prosper, Lieutenant,” said Spock, letting her go. He looked at Kirk. “It is time?”
            “It is,” said Kirk. “Are you sure you want to come? You’re free to recover here.”
            “I don’t want you to stress yourself out trying to fight a hopeless battle.” (Y/N) touched Spock’s arm. “We’re going to take the consequences of our actions.”
            “You did everything for me,” said Spock. “I will speak to it and the Klingon’s actions.” He looked down at his white robes. “However, I will do so out of uniform as I seem to have misplaced my own.”
            “I’m sure you’ll do as well as ever as our Science Officer,” said Kirk, smiling. “Take your station.”
            (Y/N) grinned. The Enterprise crew was together. They had that, no matter what else happened.
            “Are you two sure this is a bright idea?” said Bones, looking over Kirk and (Y/N)’s shoulders at Spock.
            “What do you mean?” said Kirk.
            “Spock comes back from the dead and just goes back to his post? We aren’t worried about that?” said Bones. “He’s still not exactly working on all thrusters; he’s just still head-over-heels for (Y/N).”
            “Isn’t that the core of his personality, as you always complained?” said Kirk.
            Bones paused. “Yes, but that’s not the point.”
            “Bones, we’ll keep an eye on them,” said (Y/N). “I’m monitoring him through our bond. He wants to speak for us. And I’m not going to force him to sit back. Not when we would never do that if he was in our situation.”
            “When you put it like that, I sound like the bad guy for being a doctor,” sighed Bones.
            “I’m sure Spock will be glad to know we’re all looking out for him,” said Kirk. “Even you.”
            “You tell him I’m worried and I’ll never treat you for a stupid injury again,” grumbled Bones.
            Kirk chuckled and took his seat. (Y/N) shook their head in amusement and headed to their station while Bones crossed his arms and sat down.
            “Mr. Sulu,” said Kirk. “Take us home.”
            “Aye, Admiral.” Sulu pushed a lever forward, and the thrusters activated. With another button, the landing gear retracted, and the Bounty floated up into the air. “One quarter impulse power.” He flew them forward towards the sunlight and the stars beyond.

            “Estimating planet Earth, 1.6 hours, present speed,” said Sulu as they flew.
            “Continue on course,” said Kirk. “Mr. Chekov, any sign of Federation escort?”
            “No, sir, and no Federation vessels on assigned patrol stations,” said Chekov.
            “That’s odd,” said Kirk. “(L/N), Uhura, what’s on the comms channels?”
            “Very active, sir,” said Uhura. “It’s almost gibberish.”
            “There’s multiphasic, overlapping transmissions,” said (Y/N). “We’ll need a moment to try to sort it out.”
            “Hi.” Bones sat down next to Spock. “Busy?”
            Spock raised a brow. “(Y/N) is busy. I am monitoring.”
            Bones cleared his throat. “Well, I just wanted to say it sure is nice to have your katra back in your head and not mine. What I mean is, I may have carried your soul, but I sure couldn’t fill your shoes.”
            “My shoes? We wear different sizes,” said Spock.
            “Forget it,” said Bones. He paused. “Perhaps we could cover a little philosophical ground, life, death, things of that nature.”
            “Doctor, we rarely agree on such matters,” said Spock.
            “Not, but we always like a debate,” said Bones. “Plus, you’ve been there and back!”
            “It would be impossible to discuss without a common frame of reference,” said Spock.
            “…You’re joking,” said Bones.
            “A joke is a story with a humorous climax,” said Spock.
            “You mean I have to die to discuss your insights on death?” said Bones.
            “Please don’t,” said (Y/N), finishing their job. “Admiral, we’re getting quite a few distress calls.”
            “I don’t doubt it,” said Bones to himself.
            “What’s going on?” asked Kirk.
            “It—” (Y/N) frowned. “We’re now receiving a message coming from the Federation. It’s going out to every ship in the area.”
            “On screen,” said Kirk instantly.
            Static appeared onscreen, barely focusing into a picture of the president of the Federation. It seemed the signal was nearly being blocked.
            “This is the President of the United Federation of Planets,” said the president. “Do not approach Earth. The transmissions of an orbiting probe are causing critical damage to this planet.”
            (Y/N) raised their brows in surprise.
            “It has almost totally ionized our atmosphere,” continued the president. “All power sources have failed. All Earth-orbiting satellites are powerless. The probe is vaporizing our oceans. We cannot survive unless a way can be found to respond to the probe. Further communications may not be possible. Save your energy. Save yourselves. Avoid the planet Earth at all costs. Farewell.” The message fritzed out, leaving them with static again.
            Spock and (Y/N) looked at the humans in the room. Each sat still with heavy emotions on their shoulders, mixes of shock, fear, and sorrow. Kirk turned around in his chair to face his crew, but he found himself unable to speak as he looked at each of them.
            “Can you let us hear the probe’s transmission?” said Kirk.
            “Yes, sir,” said (Y/N). “On speakers.”
            A low bellow, long and wailing, echoed in the Bridge. It was pained and mournful, humming with electricity as it came through the speakers. The keen wailed several times, and each time felt more agonized than the last.
            (Y/N) furrowed their brow. Whoever had sent this was unhappy, that was certain. But who—or what—was attempting communication?
            “Spock, what do you make of that?” asked Kirk.
            “Most unusual,” said Spock. “An unknown form of energy of great power and intelligence, evidently unaware that its transmissions are destructive. (Y/N), do you concur?”
            They nodded. “I doubt its intentions are hostile. The sound is…pained more than angry.”
            “And this is its way of saying ‘hi, there’ to men on Earth?” said Bones.
            “There are other forms of intelligence on Earth, Doctor,” said Spock. “Only human arrogance would assume the message must be meant for man.”
            “But I doubt it’s the computers like our encounter with Voyager,” added (Y/N).
            “Oh, great, so it’s still a mystery,” said Bones.
            “So you two are suggesting that the transmission is meant for a life form other than man?” said Kirk.
            “It is at least a possibility, Admiral,” said Spock. “The President did say it was directed at Earth’s oceans.”
            “Uhura, can you modify the probe signals accounting for density and temperature and salinity factors?” said Kirk.
            “I can try, sir,” said Uhura. She paused and fiddled with the Klingon controls. “I think I have it, sir.”
            The bellowing had lost the metallic hum and become melodic, beautiful even. It sounded like the call of a friend.
            “And this is what it would sound like underwater?” said Kirk.
            “Yes, sir,” said Uhura.
            “It’s beautiful,” said (Y/N).
            “Fascinating,” said Spock. “If my suspicion is correct, there can be no response to this message. Excuse me.” He turned away.
            “Spock, dear, where are you going?” asked (Y/N).
            “To test my theory,” said Spock, heading out of the Bridge.
            (Y/N) sighed and followed. This was definitely their husband, that was certain.

Hello, hope you are well! I've been really enjoying reading through your BACC posts and i was wondering if there is a particular set of rules you use for your BACC?

I've always called Brightmaple a quasi-BACC and I have to lean reeeally heavily on the quasi! I took a couple loose rules from BACC gameplay (mostly from @deedee-sims Griffinmere) but left many out from the start.
These days I'd say it's best described as generational growth-minded rotational gameplay with a custom ruleset, but that doesn't roll off the tongue the same way.
I don't play with a tax and/or mayor system, nor do I have rules for unlocking services like fire and police and such. Community lots and subhoods are fair game for me to add as needed, whenever I like. Many of my rules are constantly evolving and being added or changed as I go along.
My most essential rules are the strictness of rotation to keep everyone's ages in sync so the generations progress evenly - every household gets played for the five day full season, every Sim gets five days of life experience per round.
I also have a no Maxis jobs rule - I find them boring, and wanted to get more comfortable with owned businesses - before this hood I had hardly touched them. So every household owns a business (in a few cases instead of an owned business a Sim might work from home ie: selling paintings, instead). Once there is an owned business in the household, then another Sim in the home can work as an employee of another business.
I also don't use the service NPC's which is I guess another nod to BACC rules - no maids, gardeners, repairpeople (using landlords for repair is OK to me, perk of apartment living to make up for all the glitches), grocery delivery (but pizza or Chinese delivery is OK). I will allow nannies when it's required like going on vacation, but for day to day child care I use the 'ask to watch kids' mod and ask a family member or friend. And police and fire dept are also OK. I guess it's just DIY when you can is the rule?
I also have some more info outlined on my Gameplay Rules page which talks a little more about specific things in how I approach day to day gameplay and population control and things like that!
After 17 rounds and getting into the third and fourth generations, these days really digging into the individual characters of my Sims is becoming top of mind for me. It can be easy to become repetitive and play out the same stories over and over after so long (I think my last rough count was about 100 playable Sims in Brightmaple's history, dead and alive) so letting their individuality come through is I think essential for keeping gameplay fresh and interesting.
(Edited to add) I also should mention in terms of the finance system generally, I'm not strict - I allow the $20k handout. Beyond that evidence of my Sims living in a socialist utopia, my only real money rule is it has to come from somewhere. There is money that can be won from some ROS rolls, and I can "loan" them money with cheats that they have to pay back, without interest. I will also have parents buy items for their teens still living at home, to stuff in their inventory, and sell when they move out on their own as adults - essentially the parents giving their kids some money to start out with, if they can afford it. Not everyone's business is as lucrative as everyone else's, so some can't give as much.

Sweaty and out of breath, Remus slid to the edge of the makeshift dance floor, a steady boom-boom-spat filling his ears. Fishing out a cold bottle of something from the ice tub closest him, he gulped down half of it and grinned.
He'd really out done himself this year.
In a little over an hour, Remus and a mighty army of brand-spanking new legal interns has transformed the big conference room into a dance club worthy of this year's QLaw Halloween party.
Balloons carpeted the floor, bouncing and flying into the air with the movement of the dancers. Long tables lined the walls, filled with drinks and food and candy. Anchored to each corner and synced to the music, tall banks of flashing lamps sent a pattern of sparkling lights over the dancers. Trickier to see under the stage lights, the dancer's earbuds flashed to the same beat, all hooked into the same AV system.
They'd converted the cavernous intern room into a costume staging area, with spots to fix makeup and tall mirrors he'd dragged in from his latest exhibit. One of the interns had even create a Stitch Bitch repair station where they put their amateur cosplaying skills to good use, ready to help the inevitable ripped seam or crooked wig.
Designated as a calm space, the library was decked out with drinks and food, then the lights were dimmed and Remus had drawn a big sign on the front door: Tiny voices inside only! Or Cthulu will come getcha.
The only spots left untouched by the party army's work had been reception—gotta at least attempt to keep up the appearance of a buttoned-down legal firm—and a few of the attorney's offices, including Jannie's.
The current song faded, a fresh track rising up to meet it. "Key change!" he sang aloud, raising his water bottle to Jannie on the other side of the dance floor. Decked out in a perfect replica of Elton John's pink feather… extravaganza, he wasn't hard to find. Jannie'd been pulled into a group dance, the younger lawyers insistent their Attorney-in-Charge had to know the steps to a now nearly over-played Chappell Roan song.
Remus laughed. By the time the law geeks knew all the words, the song was D-E-A-D dead-to-go.
Without much warning, the music pouring through his earbuds was interrupted by his phone's override. Somebody in his contacts. He scanned the crowd, wondering who he knew—who he wanted to know—that wasn't already at the party. He pulled it out of his pocket and blinked down at the name.
It was the only person in his contacts he'd listed by their actual, full name.
Logan Croft.
"Heya, Logan," he said in his normal voice. With the music only playing through their headsets, he neither had to worry about being heard over the phone nor anyone listening in.
Not that he ever really gave a fuck about that.
"Ro?" he croaked, sounding confused.
Remus closed his eyes and drew in a slow breath. Why did that hurt so fucking much?
"Wrong Prince, man," he muttered, ready to end the call. "You've reached Ro's better-looking brother."
"Re?" he asked, voice weak and spacey as fuck. "Oh, thank god, Re… Re, please, I'm—" He groaned, breathing heavily against the mic. "I—I—I don't know… I don't exactly know where… Well, I…"
Remus' hurt fizzled out along with his annoyance and he ticked up the volume on the call. "Hey, man, are you okay?" 
"She didn't take it," he half-laughed. The rest came out like a sob. Yeah, definitely high and not having a good time of it. "It was on the stairs. Grey, all grey, she didn't see it. She didn't take it. I have it."
"What? Logan, what are you—" Muffled movement blasted through the phone, and something scraped over the phone mic. "Listen, Logan, where are you? Are you home?" He listened intently for the tell-tale sound of a turn signal or motor. "You're not driving or anything, are you?"
Breathing heavy, he gasped back. "No… No, of course not, I…" He whimpered then, phone pressed so close to his face Remus could hear a hard swallow. "I… I need… Is Ro…"
His voice faded away, distracted or too doped up on whatever the hell he'd taken to finish his sentence. Remus would've sworn the call dropped but for the ragged breathing on the other end. "What do you need, man?" Remus prompted, biting back the question caught behind his teeth. What the fuck do you want with Ro?
"I'm—" Logan gasped over the phone, voice dropping to a whisper. "Shit, she's home. She's home, I—I—I have to go. Please… I'm…" More movement, then Logan whined, pained and quiet. "Don't come. Don't come, okay? Please? Stay with Ro, I'll call later. I prom—"
With a beep, the call dropped. Or was ended.
Remus’ thumb hovered over the bright green ‘redial’ icon for a long moment before stabbing it. It didn't even ring.
‘Hello, you have reached Logan Croft. Please leave a brief message and I shall return your call as soon as possible. If you are in crisis, please dial or text two-zero-six—’
Hanging up, Remus shook his head. He scrolled idly through his contacts. For a second he even wondered if should call the cops. Shit. No good would ever come of that.
He sucked in a deep breath. Man, he was getting paranoid. Not every Karen was a… Karen. Or whatever the fuck her name was. Dude was just a little fucked up and drunk dialed Ro. He laughed humorlessly. Maybe the guy wasn't as straight as Jannie seemed to think.
“Now, now, Muse…” Jannie’s voice purred just behind him, both arms wrapping around his middle. Arching up over both of them, Jannie's feather mantle softened the harsh stage lights around them into a rosy glow. Remus’ eyes slipped shut and he leaned back with a low hum.
Jannie nuzzled his ear. “You’re looking entirely too stressed for a party.”
Still gripping the phone, he tapped one end against the opposite palm. You could rip the cigs from his hand but this habit was here to stay. “Yeah… got a… Got a weird call.”
Janus turned Remus in his arms to face him. He searched his eyes. “Prank weird or stalking weird?” he asked, jaw set like he was ready to jump right into his fucking phone and wipe out whoever was on the other end.
“I… Neither?" he finally said, shaking his head. "It was Croft—uh, Logan.”
“What the hell did he want?” Janus’ scowl deepened. “He didn’t even show up for work today. Called out sick.”
“He called out?” The guy had sounded pretty fucked up. Remus could hardly imagine him coherent enough to dial him. Clearly he hadn’t been.
“Well, his wife called reception.” Jannie rolled his eyes, more annoyance than usual slipping out. ”Grace said it sounded like he was hungover. But… why was he calling you?”
“That’s the thing, he thought he’d called Ro.” He scratched at his arm. The tiny handful of people who knew the both of them—actually knew ̛them—could fit in Jannie's office. He'd thought he was done with that bullshit.
Jannie gently pulled his hand away and wrapped both Remus' arms around his own back. It had been a long fucking time since he’d last been confused for Ro. But Logan hadn’t even sounded disappointed to have gotten him instead, just… relieved he’d gotten somebody he knew on the line. Relieved he'd gotten him.
‘Re? Oh, thank god, Re… Please, I’m—’
Shaking his head, Remus shoved the thought away.
“I was unaware Ro knew him outside of…” Jannie made a face like he’d gotten a mouthful of bad kimchi and Remus shrugged.
“He doesn't." Remus shook his head. "Didn't? Not since college, at least." He met Jannie's eyes. "I… I gave Logan my number back then… After he told me… y'know, to talk to Ro?”
Guilt drew up Jannie’s mouth into a thin, pinched line and he looked away.
“Hey, hey, hey… Ro’s good now." Their eyes traveled as one to find him out on the dance floor, happily teaching the interns… fuck, was he trying to teach them the Electric Slide?
Snorting softly, Remus stroked Jannie's cheek, gently turning up his face so their eyes could meet. “That prick fooled a fuckton of people. And the instant you knew what he was all about, you took care of it and kicked his ass outta here.”
"I need to be faster next time," he muttered, almost to himself. "If… Fuck…" Brow still pinched even as he leaned in to Remus' touch, Jannie looked out over the party-goers. It hadn't escaped either of their attention that the party was easily twice as large as last year's, with far fewer of the attorneys and interns bailing after they gave the boss a little face time and made excuses to sneak away.
Had that one creep's presence really been that much of deterrent for folks to enjoy a party? Sure as fuck seemed like it. In fact… Remus scanned the gathering, ticking off the few he'd seen in the library, they were only missing three or four people this year. Two were taking kids trick-or-treating. One legitimately left early with a headache.
And one of them had still managed to make something of an appearance. By phone at least.
'She didn't take it. She didn't see it. She didn't take it.'
Slimy cold worms wrestled in Remus' gut, squirming their way up into his chest. Old friends he'd chalked up to common jealousy.
Remus looked out over the crowd, gnawing at his mustache. What if it was something else?
"Hey, Jannie," he murmured, rubbing Jannie's knuckles back and forth over his mouth. "What do you know about Logan's wife?"

SS von der Lugen insists Europe is in danger, so the solution is a massive expansion of the military-industrial complex – in practice, buying more overpriced American weapons – and “rearmament”.
Talk about Gotterdammerung on crack.

I think I broke my thumb :(
Gonna sleep on it because it might just be sprained and tbh the US healthcare system is such a money black hole right now. The car that fits all of us inside it has a $1200 repair that has now taken two full weeks (we won't find out how much longer till Monday), and the new car we just bought outright has a (under warranty, thank FUCK) issue that is outstanding and can't be worked on until we have the van back. Van is undrivable and halfway fixed at the moment.
Simply put, I cannot afford to have a broken thumb.
Therefore, it is sprained.
(Symptoms: swollen, painful, slightly bruised (still developing), slightly numb, hint of cold feeling, but no sharp pain and I can move it)
I may have to put off the rest of the Ro Roll because I need to edit and touch up the stories, and I have a few owed comment reblogs and one very kind anonymous message I've been hoarding till the weekend.
LOL but if you want to make me feel better, read something of mine :P But seriously, UGH. I hurt it moving some heavy plastic bins in anger because of my daughter lying about something she'd hidden near them. I didn't throw, break, or damage anything but myself, but I am incredibly disappointed, both in her determination to lie about something hopefully inconsequential, and because it's really important to me to do this time-sensitive thing that I promised to do.
I am typing using the thumb and it hurts. I can't be trusted with the computer, fuck.
