She absolutely hated when he told her what to do. Juliette hated it even more when he tried to act like his protest was for her own well being. She turned, bright eyes flashing with irritation as she looked Cason up and down, her lips a thin line of disapproval.

"What would you have me do?" She snapped, nostrils flaring. "Tell him no?! My father is the only person in this world I can trust." A pause as she looked him up and down, her eyebrows pinched together. A few moments passed before her expression softened and she sighed, burying her face in her hands.

"He does not ask much of me. If Mother has gotten in his ear enough that he is asking me to go on this date, then I have to do it. Even if the man is...actually the worst." She grimaced and peered at Cason through her fingers.

"What would you have me do, huh?"

COMING ACROSS OTHER beings was not uncommon in her line of work. When she was not in the ER, she was often face-to-face with all manner of supernatural. Each of them held their distinct scents and tells as to which they were, be it vampire, werewolf, siren etcetera. Sima had met pretty much every supernatural species there was, so it was no surprise to her when she picked up that the one coming to address her, was a vampire.

His question raised eyebrows, however. She did not know this guy, had never met him before, but somehow, he found her familiar. She had to think why that would be such the case, along with why he'd said about threatening her over anything else. " I cannot say that we have ever met before, let alone you threatening me. However, I have many questions on why you jump to that conclusion above anything. If you'd have met me before, you'd know that I am Princess of Hell, and threatening me is certainly not a clever thing to do. "

Thankfully, his threatening her was not the current case and having never met before meant that they were still strangers who could at least try an amicable introduction. " All that aside, however, now that we have met, I'm Sima. " With her introduction came the extension of her hand, offering it to him to shake.

       she’s pinned, struggling to reach the stake that had long since been knocked from her hand. she wasn’t even patrolling, yet here she was  —  an alley near the bronze, seconds away from becoming a midnight snack for a vampire who, by the smell of it, hadn’t showered since the early 1900s. boy, her luck sure did suck.

         a disturbance from the alley’s entrance gives her enough time to land a punch and dive for her stake. she glances forwards, the relief of the distraction dissipating when she realizes someone is standing there. she’d assumed it was the wind or a stray cat, either of which she was thankful for, but a person? that meant more danger if she couldn’t control the situation.

          higher stakes, if you must. pun always intended.

          “ —  get out of here!” she calls, hoping it’s enough of a deterrence to save a life.

  A flash of something, a faint sheen of luminescent crimson sparkled in dark eyes at the youngling’s impertinence, a prickle of low, ancient anger prickling the hairs at the back of the kindred’s neck.  For a moment.  Oh, but the rashness of youth - he could barely remember what it felt like, the rush of it, the thrill, the fear, the excitement of the challenge, of the risk.  The arrogance of it.  He’d possessed more than his fair share of it, in his younger centuries.  So many, many years ago.   He itched to lash out, to wrap his hands around the vampire’s throat, to press and pull and dig, to display the presence and power of age and majesty.   “You would do well to remember the adage: respect your elders, boy.”

The day felt like it had gone on for years. Juliette's body ached and her mind was like an overcrowded prison filled with every mistake she had ever made. Her head was lowered, her eyes squeezed shut as she tried to shut out the noise of her thoughts. It was only interrupted when she heard Cason enter.

Slowly, she lifted her head, staring at him like she was analyzing him. She was quiet for a moment, sitting up enough to wrap her arms around herself.

"I am hardly good company right now," her voice was soft and measured, tears biting at her eyes and sorrow creeping into her tone. Juliette sighed, opening her eyes and looking at Cason again.

"Though, I am starting to think I rarely am good, in general."

Kailee gave him a sharp glare. Did he really want to mess with her? Adrenaline still ran rampant through her veins, the call to fight vibrating in her skull as she anxiously shifted her weight from one foot to another. Part of her wanted to crack his jaw, the other was just ready to collapse onto her bed and call it a day.

After a moment or two of though, Kailee heaved a heavy sigh and flopped down, already cradling a bottle of bourbon in her lap as if it were her first born. She gave Cason a side-eyed glare for a moment while she opened the bottle.

“Don’t you have better things to do than be an annoying commentary about my misadventures?”

“No, no, no, no, lascia,” Domenico looks, perhaps for the only time in his entire life, like the responsible one in the equation. That wicked grin of his that has become almost as much part of his brand as his tendency to climb in through windows, is completely absent from his lips, as he reaches out and takes a hold of the other’s shirt collar.

He tugs, just enough to make some space between him and the mortal before him, and slip right into it. He’s not usually one to intervene in situations like these, interrupt another vampire during their drinking - especially considering how private he is about his own blood consumption - but these aren’t the casual circumstances that would allow him to take a look at the scene and then quietly walk away.

He spreads his arms, continues to set himself up as a line of defence between the stranger and his victim. “You can’t hunt here. If you’re really in need of some blood I can help you out, but this is Franco Magliocca’s ‘turf’, and he really doesn’t like it when random vampires kill his prey... He’ll be on your ass by morning and he will make sure you get to see the sunrise if you catch my drift. If it’s really bad, I’ll fix you up, but leave this area. He’s got eyes and ears everywhere.”

She had been pushing his buttons all day. This was behavior that most would not imitate, and if they did, most would not survive it. Juliette normally was better than this, just antagonizing him for her own entertainment, but she was in a certain mood and Cason had been doing his best to ignore her (or at least, that was what she assumed his lack of reaction meant.)

Julie was on the verge of giving up on her little game until Cason grabbed her, spinning her to face him before pressing her against the wall. She blinked, going doe-eyed in an instant, the gold markings on her neck catching the light as she tipped her head to the side. Her lips curled into a small, triumphant grin.

"Yes? Can I help you?"

Juliette shot him a smug grin, bright eyes lighting up. She leaned her head ever so slightly to the side before she approached him, peering up at Cason. When her smile widened, it showed the tiny fangs in her mouth. Compared to the mouth of a vampire, they were useless, the equivalent of baby teeth. But they were one of the many markers of the difference between her and the average human.

"But I am your favorite pain in the ass," She cooed, turning so her back pressed to his chest, leaning her head back to continue to look up at him.

"Funny, pretty, and expensive." Julie got so snarky when she had not been bled in a while. The scent of honey growing stronger on her skin was a clear marker of that exact need.

Juliette let out a sigh, her petite frame folded in on itself as she regarded him. What a nightmare they were. They needed each other to live, but every interaction they had reminded her how hard it was to still have her humanity. 

Each golden mark on her skin was a reminder that she would never be free, while also a reminder of her privileged heritage. Both contradicted each other. Oh, how she wished she could be...normal.

Still, as she stared at him, she knew one thing: he could not control what little hope she had left.

“Of course not. The rain has to come to bring life to the plants. If it were always sunshine, we would live in a perpetual desert.” Julie shrugged, biting her lower lip.

“The dark cannot exist without the light.”

The vampire could not thrive without his comarre. Exist, surely, but not with the power they gave one another.

The pause was more than enough to answer him. Juliette sat there, a cocktail of pain, fear, and confusion. She took in a sharp breath, unable to look him in the eye.

Why would helping her benefit him in any way whatsoever? 

Did it matter?

She was thinking too much. Juliette squeezed her eyes shut as she felt him lifting her, her leg hanging in an unnatural, painful position. Despite herself, she turned, gritting her teeth and burying her face into the crook of his neck. It took everything in her to stop the tears from streaming down her face.

There was a desperation to hang onto her dignity that was stronger than the absolutely horrific pain. Her breaths were sharp and forced.

“Why do you care?”
