Random Cantonese Phrase-of-the-day:

鬼畫符 (🇭🇰🇲🇴 gwai² waak⁶ fu⁴)

Been rewatching some old TV series lately where the constant appearances of 符 in it reminded me of this humorous figure of speech! Heh!

Meaning: Unintelligible or poor handwriting.

Literal meaning: Ghosts/spirits drawing on a 符.

n.b.: Originating from Taoism (though today it has transcended into Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, and Shintoism too), 符 can be described as a talisman — for all sorts of causes ranging from good health, warding off evil, etc., to (purportedly) casting spells on others for more nefarious reasons.

Often in the form of yellow rectangles of paper with enchanted inscriptions written on them, these talismans are mostly unintelligible to the average person, and only (sanctioned) practitioners on the art of 符 inscriptions truly know what they mean.

To the average person, these scrawls are (jokingly?) seen as “writing done by ghosts/spirits” or “writing so unintelligible, only ghosts/spirits may understand them”!

↑ A sample of my own 「鬼畫符」 (囧); am actually embarrassed but it's an appropriate example for this post I guess! While not unintelligible (I hope?), it's still damn ugly!

Cass's spirit world outfit is so underrated

ABSOLUTELY. Top tier outfit all around!!

BANDAGE WRAPS MY BELOVED!! I also love the high collar that she can pull up. I feel like if Cass could retain this outfit she should just wear this casually tbh, like this slapssss. Haining's design sketches are also sooo cool!!

I kinda really like the over-one-shoulder cape of the A design, I'm just a big fan of over-the-shoulder capes in general. But I love the looseness of the robe + the obvious Chinese cultural influences in B, it makes me think of Cass in a Chinese period drama 😭.

As far as I know this is her only outfit that draws inspiration from Chinese culture (BY A CHINESE ARTIST + WRITER. EVIL CASS DOES NOT COUNT) so I really love it!!! Everyone read Spirit World!!!

Random Cantonese Phrase-of-the-day:

紙鷂 (🇭🇰🇲🇴 zi² jiu²)

Meaning: Kite 🪁

Just randomly thought of the Cantonese 🇭🇰🇲🇴 word for ‘kite’. 紙 (paper) 鷂 (kite, as in the bird of prey) while rewatching an episode of Bluey! 😺 And I think it's so much more fitting than the Standard Chinese 風箏 (🇭🇰🇲🇴 fung¹ zang¹，🀄 ㄈㄥㄓㄥ·/fēng zheng) in this case!

I've been sitting here for the first few circles in Inferno thinking 'man, Dante is the pettiest man alive' but then the more I research medieval Italian history to better understand the text, I'm starting to realize, no, it isn't specific to Dante. Medieval Italians in general were the pettiest people alive. They were just banishing people from their cities left and right for personal feuds that morphed into political wars. Dante was not an outlier here he was a man of his time, he was just a little sillier with it.

So i saw a post on the Limbus Company subreddit that talked about why the sinners extract weaker IDs compared to what they already have, but it made my mind think about the Mirror Worlds again and just how interesting they are. And i dont necessarily mean the IDs specifically, i more mean how those IDs existing effects the rest of those worlds.

Like, how many of these worlds have the LCB? And if yes, then how do certain IDs change that worlds version of the LCB? One of the more interesting to me is of all things, the LCCB world, because the Bus Crew is directly mentioned by Rodion in her uptie story meaning that that world has its own versions of the Sinners, and should at the very least of Faust to create the bus in the first place. But since Rodion, Ishmael and Ryoshu are in the LCCB in that world, who replaced them as Sinners? Do Effie, Saude and Pilot take their places in that world? And does that worlds version of the Sinners have Yi Sang potentially meaning that Effie, Saude and Pilot in that world can use IDs? Does Pilot have a chef ID in that world? Does Effie have a Dieci ID?

I just really love the idea of Mirror Worlds because the possible ramifications that IDs have on those worlds and how interesting those worlds could possible be. Like in Erlking Heathcliff's world, who replaces him on the LCB if they even exist. Is it an entirely different literary character like Victor Frankenstein, or is it someone else from Wuthering Heights like Hindley or Linton? If its Linton, did the company put in some effort to help him with his body potentially making him healthy?

Mirror Worlds are cool yall, and i dont think enough people talk about the crazy ideas that they could produce, especially with the Sinners and any worlds that swap characters.
