Whether you know it as RayForce, Gunlock, Layer Section or Galactic Attack, TAITO 1993 arcade shooter is a real classic! Full longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide & gameplay from the Ray’z Arcade Chronology collection release on PS4. RayForce might just be the best shoot'em, up (shmups) TAITO ever released, yes better than Darius Gaiden, which is an excellent game itself.

RayStorm (1996)
RayStorm NEO-HD (2023) – A remastered version of the arcade version of RayStorm. RayStorm HD launched in 2010 with additional elements and support for 16:9 aspect ratio, but RayStorm NEO-HD includes the same content as the arcade version and retains a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Review: "Ray’z Arcade Chronology" (PS4, Nintendo Switch)
Review: "Ray’z Arcade Chronology" (PS4, Nintendo Switch) | #retrogaming #playstation #retrogames #nintendoswitch #gaming
In the 90’s, the space shooter genre really hit peak levels with improving technology and the implementation of 3-D graphics. Taito’s Ray’z Arcade Chronology is an interesting piece of history, as it includes the original game in the series, RayForce, which was a 2-D vertical shooter, but then you get to see how things transitioned to 3-D in the follow-up, RayStorm, and then how it all tied…

Ray’z Arcade Chronology
After re-releasing the Darius games as the Darius Cozmic Collection and G-Darius / G-Darius HD, M2 has returned to Taito’s other big shoot-em-up series with the Ray’z Arcade Chronology. The “Ray’z” name seems to be Taito’s official designation for the 90s-era trilogy consisting of RayForce, RayStorm, and RayCrisis, which all feature the same incredibly satisfying lock-on laser game mechanics as well as the usual spacey soundtracks from inhouse band Zuntata. This collection offers ports of all three games, based on the original arcade versions, developed by M2 as part of their ShotTriggers line of shoot-em-ups. Beyond their incredible emulation accuracy, they also include gadgets on the side of the screen, which let you know your current stage, the difficulty rank (if applicable), and status of your lock-on lasers. A particularly amusing option features background noise recorded from the Hey arcade in Akihabara, Tokyo, if you want to further immerse yourself in the action.

Galactic Attack / Layer Section vs RayForce (Nintendo Switch Versions)
Upon releasing my video for Ray’z Arcade Chronology, I was contacted by a viewer, who asked about the differences between RayForce (arcade) from Ray’z and the SEGA Saturn version of RayForce. I agreed to do a side by side comparison on my YouTube channel. Overall, the games are not very different. City Connection released the Saturn version for modern hardware. While I do not notice the lag…

Big Fat Battle Preview (Steam Demo)

For our Big Fat Battle Preview, where we team up for a battle of epic proportions in this fast-paced PvP third-person shooter with roguelike elements. A host of ridiculous characters, outrageous weapons, and potent powerups await you and your friends.

Big Fat Battle Preview Pros:
- Decent graphics. - 3.51GB Download size. - Full controller support. - Graphics settings - resolution, screen mode, framer ate, graphics quality preset slider, and screenshake intensity slider. - Invert axis and sensitivity sliders. - You can rename your character. - 3rd person shooter gameplay. - Plays out where the winning team advances and the worst-performing players on the losing side are eliminated. - Every round the teams are shuffled around. - The one arena you play in is themed around Jurassic Park. - Ai-controlled dinosaurs run around and attack you. Killing them grants coins. - Coins are dropped from enemies, picked up in the level, drop from dinosaurs, and are given as rewards each round. - At the start of a round, you can buy and equip new items and weapons. - As long as you keep winning, you keep all previously bought items and weapons. - You can sell off any unwanted weapons and items to make space. - In the level will be ammo, health, coins, chillis, and power-ups. - The game plays out as time-based rounds so it has respawned. - Chillis give a temporary movement boost. - 47 characters in total to unlock and play as each has unique stats. - The warm-up area as you await players. - 19 melee weapons to unlock and use each with unique stats. - Goofy characters from babies to monies to political figures. - 32-player matches. - You play over six rounds hopefully. - The best player gets a star player reward of extra coins. - Colorful location. - Upgrades include more health, double jump, etc.

Big Fat Battle Preview Cons: - FYI it's a demo so no Steam achievements. - Menus are crap and it's so easy to quit the game as they have the buttons all laid out wrong. - Cannot combine any buttons for either keyboard or the controller. - The controller doesn't work for all the menus. - Feels unbalanced with the weapons. - As the weapons you buy are random it can easily get one-sided. - At a draw, they just give the win to what seems like a random team. - The shooting is great on some guns and bad on others. - Lag in any way is bad. - Spawn camping is rife. - When you win it's very lacklustre. Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour Times: This Week's Featured Po. Pokémon GO Community Days 2022: September Community Day. Talking Tom, Candy Run (not sure about this one, but it has vertical elements) There other vertical games, puzzle games, that use the touchscreen only:ĥ. I will mention just a few offbeat shooters: Johnny Turbo: Heavy Barrel (same deal, flips the wrong way) Johnny Turbo: Nitro Ball (flips the wrong way, but you can "flip" the FlipGrip)ġ6. Sasuke vs Commander (seeSNK Collection)ġ5. Namco Museum (Note: other game, PacMan Museum+ DOES NOT have vertical mode)Īrcade Archives has a crap load of shooters, and a bunch of non-shooters, I'm listing just a few of the non-shooters:ġ0. SNK Collection-Ikari Warriors, a few other (also shooters included)ġ1. Contra Collection- Contra and Super C (Beware: Arcade Archives versions are better but more expensive)ġ0. Capcom Arcade Stadium 2- Gunsmoke, Speed Rumbler, Hissatu Buraiken, Rally 2011, Block Block (also shooters too!)ħ. Capcom Arcade Stadium 1-Commando (has a bunch of shooters too)ĥ. Pinball FX 3-Williams Collection (22 tables!)ģ.Gunbarich (follow this games developer to a trove of vertical shooters)Ĥ. Let me highlight some games that are NOT shootersĢ. (Forced to be since Nintendo doesn't have a category for vertical games.)
Sat 30th Jul I am a bit of expert when it comes to the Flip-Grip.
Ra圜risis HD (2023) – A remaster of Ra圜risis. RayStorm HD launched in 2010 with additional elements and a 16:9 aspect ratio, but RayStorm NEO-HD includes the same content as the arcade version and retains a 4:3 aspect ratio. RayStorm NEO-HD (2023) – A remaster of the arcade version of RayStorm. Here's what you can expect in this Chronology (via Gematsu): It's a mix of the original releases along with some remasters as well. The Switch already has an amazing selection of shmup games to select from, and this new collection will bolster it with a total of five games. There's no word on a western release at the moment. Full longplay, playthrough, walkthrough, guide & gameplay from the Ray’z Arcade Chronology collection release on PS4 with the Neo HD version of RayStorm. Many video games series made the jump to 3D in the mid 1990s it's fair to say not always for the better as early 3D hardware didn't always do the game justice. Originally planned as a 2D sequel, development of the game originally know as R-Gear was scrapped early in development in favour of the Taito FX-1 system 3D board.
The end result is a somewhat mixed follow that didn't really need to use the 3D hardware. The game is quite sluggish as a result with huge hit boxes making the game much harder than its predecessor.
