just finished re-reading all systems red and the way martha wells' narration directly tracks murderbot's thoughts is, like, diabolical in retrospect.

because on my first read-through, i'll be honest. i did not remember the presaux crew at all. pin-lee and gurathin show up in exit strategy and i, remembering nothing about those two except ":D! presaux friends!" expected them to be like "omg hey murderbot!" because i figured the presaux crew would be excited to see their secunit again. i did not remember pin-lee's temper or gurathin's skepticism. because the presaux crew kinda blurred together for me in the first book. because that's how murderbot saw them too!

all systems red has the most en media res of all en media res beginnings. not just because it starts in the middle of an action sequence, but because it also starts in the middle of an emotional sequence. the survey has been happening, for, what - a couple of weeks? - by the time asr starts. murderbot has already met the crew. they have already formed impressions of it. but, crucially, it has formed almost no opinions of them*.

it's been watching media and half-assing its job. and at this point in murderbot's journey, and therefore its internal narration that forms the text, a human is a human is a human. it is not invested in their work, so we don't hear about the start of their survey. it literally starts paying attention to them when they are in danger and when they start to realize that it is a person, because that is when murderbot has to start paying attention.

and this is why i remembered almost nothing distinct about the presaux crew. there are a lot of crew members, but murderbot spends very little time thinking about them as individuals. so the narration tends to skim over their distinct personalities, because murderbot doesn't really consider them* at all!

and then of course we come to exit strategy and network effect, and the contrast could not be more clear. now it's got opinions about everyone, and because it has a better grasp on their personalities, the narrative does too. oh yes that's arada, wibbly bulwark, the human murderbot trusts to not be overconfident and ignore its advice. that's gurathin. it doesn't like gurathin. that's pin-lee, the combatunit of lawyers, well-dressed and sharp-tongued. and of course, that's ratthi (tag: bestie!!), who stays in the car because he will get himself killed by something.

and of course, there's dr mensah. but she was always an exception.

*dr mensah is, as she always is when it comes to murderbot, an exception to this generalization. that's tag: intrepid explorer like blorbo from my shows! that you're talking about. even when murderbot mostly tried to avoid humans at all costs, even murderbot paid attention to her. from asr to now, that has been and remains perfectly true.

do you guys even get it like.. wally west grew up thinking love was entirely conditional. when he was little the only person who loved him was iris. and then barry came along too but then they both died. and he grieves and dedicates his life to honoring them. and years later he meets their grandson, their real flesh and blood. of course he can’t help but hate him of course he can’t help but love him.

bart allen was raised in such isolation that he has a hard time conceptualizing love at all. the only person who loved him was iris. the one person in the whole world who was real to him was iris. he’s displaced in time to a world where everything is unfamiliar. he meets his cousin who carries the legacy of his grandparents. of course he can’t help but hate him of course he can’t help but love him.

and then everyone wonders why they don’t get along. anyways love is a circle

“Mother?” A small voice pipes up from the back of the group as one sister, once trembling in fear, cautiously raises her head to look up. Though the others try to stop her, Youngest squirms passed them all to stand before the facade of their mother. And soon, she is smiling as she looks up at her, at the being that is still Iris to her despite everything. “Sister six,” the voice that speaks no longer belongs only to Iris. “My youngest.”

for starters, OH-- Haru would super end up a girl dad, 100%!

also it's def an accident

he definitely was not planning to have kids at all anytime soon

if at all

but this was happening and you guys just had to live with it

he's honestly kind of a nervous wreck the whole time

he's glad it's with you now though instead of a rando one night stand

(he actually has to grapple with the possibility that this isn't technically his first kid...)

it's a lot of big feelings but he knows one thing he's not going to do is abandon you or his kid

(shout out to the head canon that Haru didn't really know his dad, either cause his dad was distant or just flat out not there)

(also shout out to the horrible thought that for a split second he actually thought 'I think I get way my dad left' and his immediate repulsion and general reaction that he even had that thought fundamentally changed him FOREVER)

He's fully certain he's gonna mess up something along the way, but he's not going to leave

and then when he holds his daughter for the first time, it's legit that cheesy moment of it all clicking into place

Haru is definitely not a perfect dad, but he's also a really good dad cause no matter what, he does genuinely love his kid

he's actually a little surprised at how much this scrunchy little bean won him over in less than a second

he's also a little scared at how attached to her and you he's letting himself get but too late for that now, he's gonna face it

he doesn't spoil her necessarily-- eh, okay, he kinda does, but not to the point where she learns no life lessons

lord help everyone when she gets old enough to date

low key 'the cool dad' among his kid's friend group

just a very supportive dad in a happy family

he's shocked at how he's become such a family man, and also shocked at how much he loves it

and if that family were to grow a bit more well...

maybe he's more down for this commitment thing than he first thought
