i feel like i deeply understand luka and jj to the point where there is no doubt in my mind that jj uses praise to initiate things, especially during the first few weeks of getting to know each other after the trade.

jj tries to push their boundaries with it— something he can use to disguise it as a coach simply encouraging his player. it’s simple— as easy as giving compliments after he shoots his step back 3’s (“good, luka, really good.”) he’ll give constructive criticism by holding eye contact, face leaning into his, resting a hand on his waist while he rambles on and on about luka’s flow. it’s intimate, jj speaking to every part of luka’s body that craves jj’s tough love. it’s not given, but earned. it pushes luka do better on the court just so he can see jj’s half smiles, where his eyes shine with nothing but pride.

jj says i’ll see you later, gives him a tap on the ass, and maybe it’s his delusion speaking to him— but a quick wink. might’ve been friendly (or not), but it’s jj laying his cards on the table. it’s up to luka to make a move.

given how much jj loves luka before he became a coach, you know he has to fight himself to refrain from praising luka. but he needs to establish himself as a coach that brings out the best version of luka, for luka, like he promised, so the boundary he is always pushing is the threshold of luka's yearning for a compliment from him.

luka loves getting acknowledged and praised by the people he loves, but particularly by jj, because his words carry weight, it's legitimizing. he loves to joke about his defense with jj, even when jj was a broadcaster. he knows the media loves to pick on his defense, but jj is on his side. luka doesn't just want to be praised personally, but publicly by jj—he wants everyone to know. from early on he knew the taste of jj's constant praise and he has been cocky about it to the point where he wants to make sure jj gets every stat and detail right. so jj is not going to make it easy for luka this time. he is going to measure his praises and decide when is the right time for rewards

but of course jj doesn't hold back when credit is due or simply when he cannot hold back.

there's tenderness in how jj recounts it, like he's captivated by the sheer beauty of luka's tears, vulnerability, and bravery. ofc there's intimacy in seeing him laid bare. and he called luka superhuman not for his performance but for how luka was willing to let everyone see him raw, then embracing his suffering as fuel to make himself burn brighter, for himself and for the people around him.

the praises can be very playful between them, like on the podcast, or they can be very sincere. jj chooses his words carefully, he means them and he wants people to listen. he curates praises. luka matches his sincerity with his own openness and vulnerability, leaving him transparent like an open book—something jj reads with ease. though he is always confident and well-seasoned from compliments, when jj gets assertive and serious, all of luka's cockiness is going to dissolve into pink cheeks and a beam. his body cannot lie but he knows he is deserving and he will listen like he's savoring and being savored all at once. it's not always about the praises, he wants to be understood

JJ knows Luka. He knows how Luka reacts to losses, isolation and anger, and he knows it’s not healthy. He’s heard from Luka’s teammates how worse it’s gotten, skipping meals and hangouts for extra drills and heavier weights.

JJ also knows how stupidly stubborn Luka can be.

It’s been a few days since their first round exit and Luka has been cutting everyone off. LeBron wants to talk about the Luka Dončić Foundation? Too busy. Rui wants to go to a restaurant? Not hungry. Austin wants to practice with him? Trying to work on solo stuff. Dorian wants to just sit at someone’s home and watch something? Need to work on training.

Everyone’s been coming to JJ to try and get him to say something to Luka, it’s because you’re the coach, they explain. JJ took a deep breath and muttered an ‘okay’ before he spun around to talk to Luka.

‘I like when coaches are strict with me,’ JJ remembers Luka saying to him, ‘so you’re practically my perfect coach.’

Hopefully Luka still feels the same after JJ yells at him.

Lone squeaking of shoes and the bouncing of basketballs echoed throughout the empty court. The perpetrator of the noise, Luka, stood hunched over, his light grey shirt turned into a dark grey due to sweat. JJ’s footsteps caused him snap his head around to face JJ.

“Luka,” JJ mused while eyeing Luka up and down, “not surprised to see you here, your teammates have been complaining about it.”

Luka huffed and turned back to the hoop, “what do they complain about?” He shoots and JJ pleasantly notes that his shot goes in perfectly.

“Y’know, ‘Luka’s ignoring me, he doesn’t wanna hang out anymore, he’s practically living in the gym,’ all that kind of stuff.”

Luka grumbled as he turned around to face JJ, “I don’t live in gym.”

“That’s the part you’re focused on?”

“Yes.”

JJ sighed, resisting the urge to rub his temples, “go and shower, I’ll meet you in the locker room.” He left for the locker room before he could hear Luka’s confused questions.
