this is a wonderfully amazing thing - i love redwoods so much, i hope this project of returning indigenous land continues
"The Yurok will be the first Tribal nation to co-manage land with the National Park Service under a historic memorandum of understanding signed on Tuesday [March 19, 2024] by the tribe, Redwood national and state parks, and the non-profit Save the Redwoods League, according to news reports.
The Yurok tribe has seen a wave of successes in recent years, successfully campaigning for the removal of a series of dams on the Klamath River, where salmon once ran up to their territory, and with the signing of a new memorandum of understanding, the Yurok are set to reclaim more of what was theirs.
Save the Redwoods League bought a property containing these remarkable trees in 2013, and began working with the tribe to restore it, planting 50,000 native plants in the process. The location was within lands the Yurok once owned but were taken during the Gold Rush period.
Centuries passed, and by the time it was purchased it had been used as a lumber operation for 50 years, and the nearby Prairie Creek where the Yurok once harvested salmon had been buried.
Currently located on the fringe of Redwoods National and State Parks which receive over 1 million visitors every year and is a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site, the property has been renamed ‘O Rew, a Yurok word for the area.
“Today we acknowledge and celebrate the opportunity to return Indigenous guardianship to ‘O Rew and reimagine how millions of visitors from around the world experience the redwoods,” said Sam Hodder, president and CEO of Save the Redwoods League.
Having restored Prarie Creek and filled it with chinook and coho salmon, red-legged frogs, northwestern salamanders, waterfowl, and other species, the tribe has said they will build a traditional village site to showcase their culture, including redwood-plank huts, a sweat house, and a museum to contain many of the tribal artifacts they’ve recovered from museum collections.
Believing the giant trees sacred, they only use fallen trees to build their lodges.
“As the original stewards of this land, we look forward to working together with the Redwood national and state parks to manage it,” said Rosie Clayburn, the tribe’s cultural resources director.
It will add an additional mile of trails to the park system, and connect them with popular redwood groves as well as new interactive exhibits.
“This is a first-of-its-kind arrangement, where Tribal land is co-stewarded with a national park as its gateway to millions of visitors. This action will deepen the relationship between Tribes and the National Park Service,” said Redwoods National Park Superintendent Steve Mietz, adding that it would “heal the land while healing the relationships among all the people who inhabit this magnificent forest.”"

Chenford + "you're the love of my life"
Read on Ao3 - Rated M W/C: 1,851
On the third Thursday of every month, whether they had the day off or not, Tim and Lucy planned a stress-relieving activity. Sometimes it was a hike, axe throwing, laser tag, batting cages, mini golf (once), go-karts, bowling (also once)— whatever it was, it had to be fun and it had to be competitive.
They’d been doing this since she was his rookie and the tradition continued until the present, where it was their first third Thursday of the month since they started sleeping together. (Re: they’d had two third Thursdays since they started dating, the first the day before their first (make-up) date, and the second was bulldozed by work, opting instead for a quick game of darts at a bar after shift. This would be their first big activity since they started sleeping together ).
Tim opted for paintball, an activity they’d only done once together. The weather was nice and they hadn’t gone since before her training was over. He’d invited a few people from the station, accidentally roping in Nolan who convinced Bailey to join thus resulting in a major rival event showdown between the LAPD and the LAFD renting out the entire terrain for their competition.
“Chen!” Tim barked, “On your left!”
Lucy ducked the red paintball flying in her direction and popped off two blue shots square in the firefighter’s chest.
She ran to catch up with Tim, pretty sure they were two of the last surviving four on their team. If her calculations were right, Nyla and Angela still roamed the edges of the park, securing the perimeter and pushing the LAFD in, while Tim and Lucy covered the centerfield, pushing them out.
“I’m out,” Nyla’s voice came over their earpieces. “They shot me in the back, you take ‘em down, and you take ‘em down hard.” Her voice punctuated her anger. Despite the air of competition, all parties involved were known to take things a little too seriously.
“Shit, I’m out too,” Angela’s voice called over the comms just a few minutes later. “My source says they’ve got three people left and one’s taken the high ground. Keep your eyes up, show them no mercy.”
Tim and Lucy exchanged looks and quickly, devised a plan of attack to rebalance the score and to then finally settle it once and for all. There was no way they were going to let the LAFD win a competition about shooting and tactical advantages.
“We need to lure them all here, take them out at once,” Lucy told Tim, seeing the fight in his eyes and feeling the adrenaline and oxytocin flood her system as it was likely flooding his too. All she wanted to do was rip his clothes off and fuck him hoarse, but of course, they needed to win the damn game first.
“How do you suggest we do that, Chen?” Tim stepped closer to her, dropping his gun and letting it swing from the strap on his shoulder.
She had an idea of how they could get their attention and she knew Tim would be on board for her obfuscation.
Lucy eyed their surroundings, assessing the tactical disadvantage they had found themselves in. Essentially, they were standing in a pit. The terrain sloped down to where they were, allowing for the surrounding trees and rocks to provide perfect cover for an oncoming attack. There was one way out of the pit alive and it required shooting everyone else first.
“If one’s in the trees, that one–” Lucy pointed to the old-growth redwood which had sturdy enough and close enough branches to climb and take cover in, “gives them the best shot.”
“And the bushes at the base provide good cover for their backup, a misdirect to where in the tree they’re shooting from,” Tim finished for her.
“Exactly. So if we assume two are coming from there– 12 o'clock, then the third would be between 5 and 7, in that area,” Lucy pointed to the respective position. It had little to no cover, meaning the opposing team would have to plan a calculated attack with all three of them at once.
“So, what’s your plan, Chen?” Tim nodded, feeling blood rush through his entire body from the activity. He was impressed with how good Chen was at all this, how her natural talent for these things went far beyond anything he could have taught her. Finally, he had found his perfect match in her, so much better than he ever thought.
“We make out,” Lucy dropped her gun too, and stepped into Tim’s personal space.
His hands were bracketed on his hips, giving Lucy the perfect space to slip her hands between them and wind them around his waist. She pulled his lips in for a kiss, biting at his bottom lip and pulling back to gauge how receptive he was to her plan. He was very receptive, she noted, as he leaned forward to recapture her mouth before speaking again.
“As much as I like kissing you, how’s that going to distract them?” Tim asked, finding his eyes caught on the bead of sweat gathered on her upper lip and fighting the temptation to suck it off.
Wait, why was he fighting the impulse? That’s exactly what they both wanted.
Leaning into her and pulling her in closer, Tim claimed her lips, wiping any trace of sweat from her mouth and replacing it with his saliva.
“While we’re making out,” Lucy breathed into his ear, now that he was giving the same treatment to her neck, “they’ll think we aren’t paying attention,” Lucy kept her eyes trained on 5 to 7 range while Tim was in perfect position to clock oncoming combatants in the tree. “But really, we’re watching their every move and shooting before they have a chance to set up their shot.”
“I like how you think, Chen. Sharp– Smart– Sexy– Scintillating–” Each word was precipitated with a wet kiss somewhere on Lucy– her neck, her chin, her cheek, her lips…
“Wow, Bradford cracked a dictionary,” Lucy teased, feeling her system flood with a new rush of endorphins. She couldn’t wait to win this game and take Tim home to fuck him.
Tim casually looked up when he heard rustling in the distance.
“Here they come,” He said, making a show of pulling her leg up on his hip next to his gun, making it seem like he was going to pick up her other leg when in fact it gave him the perfect cover to quickly aim his weapon.
Lucy let out a louder than necessary moan, hoping to sell the scene that she and Tim had gotten sidetracked by each other and were too caught up in the heat of the moment to pay attention to the firefighters on their approach. It was easy since Tim was such an excellent multi-tasker and the way he pressed his pelvis against her actually did make her moan.
“I see Bailey,” Lucy gasped, feeling Tim dig his fingers into her hip.
“I’ve got Lang and Kersh,” Tim confirmed his sightings.
“On three?” Lucy gave him one last big, wet, sloppy kiss, using the tapping of her tongue against his as the counter.
Just as Tim raised his weapon to shoot Lang in the tree and Kersh from the bushes with two blue pellets each, Bailey was quick to avoid Lucy’s three shots in the opposite direction.
Bailey got off a round of red paint and watched it splatter with a grin as it would have pierced Tim in the heart had it been a real round.
Dramatically, Tim slumped onto Lucy, now acting as her cover (pretending to have actually died) as Lucy angrily screamed and sent off the rest of her blue paint pellets in Baliey’s direction. She was unable to dodge them all and was hit with three, one on her shoulder and two on her chest. She dropped her gun in defeat and announced over the radio that the LAFD was down their final player with one LAPD still standing.
Tim, still messing around, leaned his full weight into Lucy’s arms as they pretend played a death scene.
“Thank you,” Tim gasped, watching Lucy’s fake tears fall from her cheeks, “you revenged me honorably, Chen.”
“Tim, no,” Lucy palmed his face, turning it toward her and landing a kiss on his lips, “Tim, stay with me, Tim!”
“Lucy,” He rasped, fluttering his eyes shut, “I always knew you were the love of my life, since that first day,” Tim sputtered, cracking the fake blood capsule he had saved just in case this exact moment happened.
“Tim, don’t die on me! I love you!” Lucy shouted, cradling his limp body in his arms.
Bailey approached with the rest of their players coming up behind her, having all witnessed most if not all of the display before them.
“Really Bradford? Fake blood?”
“And scene!” Lucy called as Tim jumped back up to life and spit the fake blood from his mouth.
“Come on, Bailey, we totally had you,”
Bailey crossed her arms and rolled her eyes. “I shot you with a fucking paintball.”
“What I miss?” Nolan asked, panting as he ran up to the group, he was the second on their team to get shot and was then in charge of reconvening the other out players on both teams. Now that he was there, everyone who played was present in the field.
“Just Tim and Lucy being dramatic as fuck, as usual, nothing new.” Angela scoffed, arms crossed and still angry she and Nyla hadn’t gotten their moment of glory. It should have been them, playing out the fake death scene with an audience.
“That was badass,” Tim admitted quietly to Lucy. She had shot at Bailey at the same time he had shot at his targets, and could only imagine how cool it looked from an outsider’s perspective to see the couple going from making out to tandem shooting. In fact, he might intimidate the park into giving him the security footage to watch back for later… not that they needed more material to get them hot for each other. Tim was about ready to rip off her scarf and army green jacket she had stolen from his closet in front of all their friends (and rivals).
“Do you really think I’m the love of your life, or was that just a line from your script?” Lucy asked, fear poking through the corners of her words.
Tim answered her with a kiss so hot they’d have to call the fire department if they weren’t already there. Whoops and hollers from the crowd broke them apart sooner than they liked. “You are the love of my life, Lucy Chen,” He said before kissing her again.
With a grin brighter than a thousand suns, Lucy beamed up at him before hiding her blushing face in his chest and pulling on the lapels of his shirt. “Let’s go home. I’ve got big plans for you, lover.”
“As you wish,” Tim said, blissfully being led away by the best woman for him.

A Grand Day Out in Castro Valley
Monday, 2 September 2024
Well, what was supposed to a 15 mile bike ride to investigate the route from home to the campground in Anthony Chabot Regional Park and back didn't work quite as planned. The main reason for this trip was to determine if this campground really is in biking distance from home. And, yes: this was inspired by Laid-Back Camp.
I left home at 7:16am with water and food for the ride, but before long, I realized I would not be able to ride the whole way. My ebike's battery wasn't at full charge and I wanted some power left for the final hill on the return ride home. At about 2.5 miles in, I had to get off and hike the bike. But at the top of that dreadful hill, I saw I had a good downhill run from there.
But after only about a mile of gravity-assisted downhill, the road was closed. Gargle Maps didn't mention this, instead saying the road near home was closed, even though that was in fact open. Heck.
Image Description: A photo of a light blue ebike on a roadside in front of signs indicating the road is closed and bikes are not permitted to go any further.
So, I turned around near the Redwood Canyon Golf Course, hiked uphill the other way, and then rode to the Castro Valley Community Park. There I finished a water bottle, had a snack, and just rested for a bit.
Image Description: A photo of a light blue ebike in front of the Castro Valley Community Center at Castro Valley Community Park.
Then, it was back on the bike for the ride home. All told it was 10 miles in just under 2 hours.
But also, I have a better idea of this bike's limits and my abilities. Next time: start with a full charge!

Bay Area golf course preps for wide-ranging revamp and modernization
LOS GATOS, March 28, 2025 — A wide-ranging upgrade for a South Bay golf course would completely modernize the fairways and greens and make the venue more environmentally sustainable.

Plans for a complete upgrade of the prestigious golf course have emerged about four years after the course’s members paid $18.9 million to buy the property in 2021 from a local family that had been long-time owners of the site.

The owners and operators of the 125-acre La Rinconada venue have decided to move forward with the upgrade, which would fully transform the course. La Rinconada Country Club opened in 1929.
“The plan is to completely modernize the 18-hole layout and resurface the entire course by replacing fairways with more drought-tolerant Bermuda grasses, adding native trees and plantings, and installing a more efficient irrigation system,” La Rinconada CountryClub officials stated.
Todd Eckenrode, a renowned golf course architect with Origins Golf Design will lead the modernization effort, according to La Rinconada officials.
Morley Bros., a Los Gatos-based real estate firm, is advising the country club during the municipality’s review process.
“This modernization facilitates the reduction of water usage by 30% to 40%, saving approximately 30 million gallons annually,” Andy Kimball, La Rinconada general manager, wrote in a letter to Los Gatos municipal officials. “It will also allow the club to be more competitive and financially sustainable over the long term.”
La Rinconada Country Club is one of the largest open spaces in the Town of Los Gatos.
The nature of the Bermuda grass that will be the primary surface of the golf course will require the uprooting of hundreds of trees, including some redwood trees that were planted in the 1950s.
“The new drought-tolerant grass requires more sunlight and many non-native trees are in locations that will prevent new grasses from growing successfully due to narrow fairways, tree heights and excessive shading,” La Rinconada officials stated in the letter to Los Gatos planners.
An estimated 207 of the 1,100 trees that are currently on the course venue would be removed. These include the redwood trees and non-native eucalyptus trees, according to the proposal.
“We have a reforestation plan to replant 172 native trees, primarily mature oaks, in 24- to 60-inch boxes, and will also pay approximately $57,000 for in lieu fees to support the town’s urban reforestation program elsewhere in the community,” Kimball stated in the development proposal submitted to Los Gatos planners.
The golf course is slated to be closed for about a year or slightly longer.
“The club anticipates the entire project will require the course to be closed for approximately 12 to 14 months with a 7- to 8-month construction schedule and 3- to 4-month grass grow-in period,” Kimball wrote in the project narrative to Los Gatos planners.
The modernization is slated to begin in the spring of 2026.

Day 11 - Whistler to Tofino
Despite having a charger that in theory should use the power of the sun to re-charge, this didn’t seem to be the case, possibly because it was only through the window. I may not be a seasoned camper, but I can be pretty shrewd when needs be and the need was great as my phone is my clock, type writer, camera the list goes on. So we seized the opportunity to use the various spare plugs in the launderette to charge the chargers over night and thanks to Canadian kindness all of our stuff was still there the following day!
Today was a bit of a travelling day as we were heading to Vancouver Island, our ship was due to depart at 10:40, so we wanted to be at the port at least half an hour before, so we left with plenty of time to spare. So much time in fact we even went for a little stop off at Shannon Falls, which was an enchanting spot surrounded by forest, with a cobbled winding river up to a waterfall and various trails if you had the time… which we did not! But even with the road re-route we arrived at the port with plenty of time to spare before officially boarding. Once on the ship we dispersed into various places, as G’s sea legs aren’t the strongest, we headed to top deck to breathe in all that fresh salty air. Once the ship hit full knots it was very windy at the front, so windy in fact that G daren’t go all the way up there for fear of being blown away! One guy said that they’d seen orcas on the reverse crossing that day, so I kept an eye out whilst up top, but didn’t see diddly squat! As crossings go it was very smooth with plenty of space to move around and sit, which we did for a bit whilst G had a little nap. Around 2 hours or so in we got the call to return to our vehicles, which we all managed to do without too much stress apart from poor Little Fingers, who got lost, which is easy to do when you only come up to tyre level and all cars look the same! Thankfully we were able to stick on the hazard lights until she snuck in through a crack in the window and away we went with Georgie riding shot gun to a unique lunch spot - Goats on the Roof!
We’ve seen a variety of weird and wonderful establishments on this trip, but none with goats on the roof, although they weren’t the easiest to spot! Inside was just as whacky, with an assortment of colourful lanterns dangling from the ceiling and random items for purchase. But the perusing of eclectic souvenirs would have to wait as we were heading to the cafe/bakery which had a selection of Canadian classics and tempting baked goods. As a group we went for a range from burgers, to sausage rolls, poutine and BLTs. I can certainly get on board with the menus out here, but it speaks volume that I’m only a medium when back home I’m at least a Large! We were given 10 minutes at the end to have a look around the shop and even I have to admit they had lots of cool stuff, so I may have purchased some learner chopsticks as G is always showing me up when eating oriental dishes!
From here we went on to Cathedral Forest, which is part of the MacMillan Provincial Park. Now we’ve seen our fair share of woods, forests, trees, call ‘em what you will, but this one had a mystical feel and an extremely tall 800 year old redwood. We did a short trail around this magical spot before jumping back on the minibus and heading for our final destination, Long Beach Campsite. First impressions, looked alright, not the most amount of toilets and showers we’d seen and we later learned that there was no hot water from the taps, but there was plenty of spots to pitch our tents, before heading off for dinner; spag bowl and home made garlic bread with Caesar salad, followed by maple tea cakes!
The camp site is on the edge of a golf course and air strip, so other than one bright light at the end of the runway, we were surrounded by darkness. And as we’d had a day of fantastic weather, the sky was extremely clear and starry, which is how we rounded off the day, gazing up at the stars above, before returning to our tent to sleep on the gravel below.
Georgie’s highlight of the day: Star gazing!

Making Your Military Move: Neighborhoods Near Military Stations!

The DMV area is home to several major military bases – Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines – with many on-base housing options. However, for those families who choose to live off-base, there are loads of alternatives. Here’s a brief overview of some of the areas that surround Andrews Airforce Base, Fort Belvoir, and Fort Meade.
And when it is time to relocate, CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty has more than 150 military-certified relocation agents who can help you buy, sell or rent. Not only will these professionals guide you through the entire process, they know how to help you get the most financial gain from your move.

Joint Base Andrews spans over 4,000 acres in Prince George’s County, Md., and has an on-base residential property population of approximately 2,600 people.
Greater Upper Marlboro
Located in Prince George’s County, Greater Upper Marlboro (the county seat) has a population of around 20,000 people, but the census divides the area into several smaller designated places. The median home value is $376,400.
This area is a mix of urban and rural. The town itself is small and quaint. Family entertainment includes:
Watkins Regional Park with an authentic, hand-carved and restored turn-of-the-century carousel, miniature train ride, putt-putt golf, a playground, and camping;
Six Flags America (nearby), a theme park with more than 100 rides, games, shows, and attractions;
Montpelier Farms, a working farm featuring activities, festivals, and a farm market.
Clinton
With a population of 38,760 at the time of the 2020 census, Clinton is home to the Surratt House Museum, a Maryland-National Capital Park, and Planning Commission facility. Built in 1852 as a middle-class farmhouse, its interesting ties to John Wilkes Booth make it doubly worth a tour.
Oxon Hill
Named for a colonial 18th-century manor home overlooking the Potomac River, Oxon Hill had a population of 18,791 at the time of the 2020 census. The original manor house burned down, but a large neo-Georgian-style home was built in its place in 1929 and is owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and is used for special events.
Oxon Hill is also the location of the National Harbor development, a large mixed-use community with residential units, hotel rooms, retail space, upscale dining, and entertainment. The MGM National Harbor Resort Casino is located at the entrance of this development.
Oxon Hill’s family fun includes the Oxon Cove Farm educational facility and the Henson Creek hiker-biker trail.
Other attractions in nearby Fort Washington include:
Rosecroft Raceway (“the Raceway by the Beltway”) which offers harness horse racing;
The Henson Creek Golf Course;
The Tucker Road Athletic Complex with swimming and ice skating.

Fort Belvoir is located in Fairfax County, Va., halfway between Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va., making it ideal for tourists who are interested in history as it is close to national parks, museums, monuments, and more. For those who work at Fort Belvoir but choose to live off base, Burke, Lorton, and Alexandria are popular choices.
Burke and Lorton, Va.
The 2020 census lists Lorton as having a population of 19,844. The median home value at that time was $463,767.
Burke’s 2020 census shows a population of 42,806. The median home value in Burke is $537,032.
The Lorton VRE station is served by the VRE Fredericksburg Line which runs between the city of Fredericksburg to the south and Washington’s Union Station to the north.
The Lorton Amtrack station is the northern terminal for Amtrak’s Auto Train which runs between this station and the Sanford station in Sanford, Florida.
Special attractions include the 218-acre Burke Lake and Lorton’s Workhouse Arts Center (a former prison!) which provides 300 performances, 12 gallery spaces, hundreds of classes, and several large-scale community events.
Alexandria
According to the 2020 census, Alexandria’s population was 160,146 — the sixth largest city in Virginia. The median home value at that time was $545,000.
Historic Alexandria is perfect for those who appreciate the arts, culture, outdoor activities, and entertainment.
Nearby George Washington’s Mount Vernon is the most visited historic home in the U.S., but there are also so many other historic sites here, as well as an abundance of restaurants, wineries, breweries, entertainment, and cultural events.

Located between Washington and Baltimore, Fort Meade is located in Anne Arundel County, Md. Surrounding neighborhoods include the communities of Odenton, Laurel, and Columbia.
Odenton
According to the 2020 census, Odenton’s population was 42,947. The median home value at that time was $337,700.
Odenton’s school system is ranked above average, and Bowie State University and Anne Arundel Community College are both nearby. Odenton offers natural entertainment in the form of parks. The Patuxent Research Refuge is nearby and offers fishing, wildlife observation, hiking, and biking.
Because Odenton is located just 19 miles from Baltimore and 15 miles from Annapolis, there’s also great proximity to historic sites, diverse dining venues and entertainment, but Odenton also has four main shopping centers as well as an ice rink, golf center, go-kart raceway, athletic club, and more. The Odenton MARC station makes this a great place for commuters to live.
Laurel
Located in northern Prince George’s County, Laurel’s population was reported as 42,947 in 2020 and the median home value was $337,700.
The City of Laurel’s Department of Parks and Recreation maintains more than 200 acres of parkland (19 park sites) which includes playgrounds, pavilions, athletic fields, trails, tennis courts, pools, basketball courts, and more.
A couple of unique highlights located in Laurel include:
The Maryland Jockey Club, known for world-class Thoroughbred horse racing.
Dinosaur Park, a fenced area where visitors can join paleontologists in searching for early Cretaceous (145 to 66 million years ago) fossils.
Columbia
At the time of the 2020 census, Columbia’s population was 104,681. The median home price was $385,900.
Located in Howard County, this planned community opened in 1967 and consists of 10 self-contained villages that were designed to enhance its residents’ quality of life in terms of human values (attempting to eliminate racial, religious and class segregation), rather than economics, and engineering.
Lakes Kittamaqundi and Centennial offer boating and fishing. The Rocky Gorge Reservoir offers hiking, horseback riding, and fishing.
The public schools are rated highly, and Columbia consistently earns a spot in Money Magazine’s “Best Places to Live in the U.S.” list, ranking first place in 2016.
If you’re in the military and it’s time to move, it’s important to find an agent who not only knows the neighborhoods around each military station, but according to CENTURY 21 Redwood Realty’s Director of Relocation Services, Tina Bodolosky, it’s also advantageous to work with a real estate professional who is trained specifically to help members of the military.
The Military Relocation Professional (MRP) certification program educates REALTORS® about working with service members and their families as well as veterans to find housing solutions that best suit their needs. They can also help you take full advantage of available benefits and support.
One such benefit, says Tina: “We offer cash back programs of up to $8,000 when you buy or sell a home through our Navy Federal Realty Plus or Military Rewards programs and utilize one of our background checked and military relocation certified agents.”

Met a very nice cat at the tire shop.

Drove to Point Reyes Station & delivered the pearls. Got to see the reservoir nearly full.
Drove through Samuel Taylor Park in the redwoods to what used to be the golf course, now a re-wilding open space

Found a mirror

Got stalked by a humonguous dragonfly

Stuffed a Little Free Library with an entire SF series I didn’t want anymore.
Got a text from ex-boyfriend who pretended to be a hippie in the 80s because hippies with pockets full of interesting substances got lucky.
He is now a gun nut anti abortion conservative who thinks his lesbian daughter owes him grandchildren. Had to remind him that all kinds of queer people have kids.
Anyway, no, he can’t stay on my couch for a few days.
And I only have one ex now that I’m still speaking to and he’s not online much anymore. I miss him.
Tomorrow I might do last years taxes. Might not.

The raiders' stories always fascinated him and haunted him, or maybe fascinated him because of how haunting they were. Even if Lucien seemed preoccupied with his new possession, his mind was focused on Ike's words, his imagination conjuring an image that could have been miles away from the truth- ever since he had entered Redwood a couple of years ago, he had only exited to visit the graveyard. The outside world felt vast and unknown, his own experiences from before surely untrustworthy as civilization presumably collapsed more and more and the virus evolved on different and stranger paths.
But he listened like a writer should always do, he listened like he did to recordings and videos and interviews, like he did to crime podcasts when he was writing his books, his face wincing but his fingers turning up the volume. If he closed his eyes, he could see the golf course and the clinic, he could hear the biters' otherworldly sounds, feel the heat of the doctor's knife on his own skin.
And damn it, Ike was quite the storyteller. He was hanging on every word he said, thirsty for more detail. He wondered how much blood was on the raider's hands, if his own would get stained if he reached out and touched his wound.
But it was Ike who reached out, and when he kissed him, his wandering mind short-circuited. Lucien didn't really kiss him back, but he didn't pull away either. He stayed mostly frozen in place- only his fingers moved, his hand covering Ike's on the handle of the cane, as if that would be enough to anchor him there.
"What is this?" he asked in a low voice, still hoarse from all the coughing. No higher volume was needed anyway- their faces were still close, their height difference accentuated when the distance disappeared. "Another power trip of yours? See how badly you can fuck with the cripple?"
"Ahhhh, the pity vote. Where would I be without it." Ike clicked his tongue and tipped two fingers to his forehead when Lucien declared him fucked-over enough to not bother picking up the squabble, but he was, honestly, grateful. Lucien was looking ... well, he never looked bad -- he had the sort of saturnine handsomeness that absorbed the ongoing pain he likely felt -- but there was a paper-thinness to his skin that hadn't been there before. A look as if he'd been enclosed in a greenhouse to keep him breathing and warm. Ike was glad Lucien had been taken care of during his illness, if he had to be sick.
As for his own mishap -- he ran his hand lightly over his head, feeling the soft bristles and the slight prickle of the stitches -- and gave a long, throaty sound to demur about it. "You know how it is when you live a life of derring-do," Ike said, breezily. "I was breaking into -- get this -- a clinic with a pharmacy on a golf course. Well, practically on a golf course, it was a gated community that was designed around a golf course. So the rich fucks didn't have to commute too far home after shaking hands over sweetheart deals and sucking each other off in the sand traps."
Ike leaned his head back, watching closely as Lucien inspected the cane and he had something to keep nattering on about, which took any awkwardness out of the situation: "--the rich clinic wouldn't even let their own rich demographic inside, canya believe it? They were all parked up in the back, dead in their cars. But there were some employees inside who'd turned and one of 'em caught me off-guard and, whoop! Down I went." Lucien was turning the cane in his hands and Ike watched, greedy to see how the other man liked it, finishing without half-thinking, "...Doc Brandon soldered my head shut with a heated-up knife. Real action-movie stuff. Lowbrow for the masses. Lowbrow for my scalp hanging off, too. Ba-dum-pum."
God, Lucien looked good using that cane. It was like his whole body recalibrated itself, little jammed-up intersections of bone and muscle finding their way back to how they were meant to be. "There's no catch," Ike said. Then he came closer, dragging his fingers up the cane till his fingers touched Lucien's on the exquisitely shaped handle. Then he leaned in and kissed Lucien, bunching the fingers of his other hand in the other man's sweater to hold him there, heedless of the cough that had punctuated the air a moment ago.
"Maybe one catch," he mumbled. This close Lucien was warm, probably feverishly so, but Ike leaned eagerly into it to soak it up into his own perma-chilled bones. He didn't try to kiss Lucien again. The pity vote, after all, could only be presumed upon so far.

This is absolutely not getting finished – sorry whoever wanted Lando and inappropriate use of golf equipment for the Kinkmeme, I hope someone else has sorted you out – because this is where I dropped myself too deeply into caretaker!Lando feels to take it further. I could rejig it into something else, but the ghost of what it was supposed to be would remain.
He hadn't really put too much thought into what fame would be like before he signed the contract. The media training had taken off some of the rough edges, but Formula 3 and Formula 2 were pretty sheltered environments. You got used to being in front of a crowd and racing under pressure, but the teams were protective and you weren't going to make the papers unless you really fucked up. You’d be noticed within your sphere, sure, but there wasn't the global pressure of being Lando Norris, Formula 1 driver for McLaren. He’s not training enough, he’s playing too many games, his girlfriend’s distracting him. Jesus, even moving to Monaco had made the papers, and now he got chastised for not spending enough time there.
Not that it was all bad. Want to go to Dubai on a whim? Yes, Mr Norris, there's a private jet available this evening. Free swag in exchange for a few insta posts? Second nature. Girls (and a not insubstantial number of boys) offering themselves up to you? For anything? That one still took a bit of getting used to.
Most usefully, though, being slightly rich and famous gave you access to people who were even more rich and famous, and some of those people could be inclined to pull a few strings and finagle access to, say, a private golf course, after hours. Just you and a discreet guest, not too many questions asked.
The light had been fading as they played the first four holes, and Lando's last slice into the redwoods hadn't been quite as planned as it looked. Good cover if anyone had been watching though. Young F1 driver and his best mate heading deep into the rough to search for a stray ball? Perfectly normal. Pushing each other up against every second tree for a snog and a grope? Well, what good's fame if you can't guarantee a bit of privacy now and again.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Why are you whispering, Max? There's no-one around for miles." He rolled his hips against Max's thigh and moaned theatrically.
"Jesus Christ, all right!" Still a whisper. Max shifted against the tree and attempted to make his voice come out at a normal volume. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Slightly better.
"Yeah. If you do?" His hips stilled for a moment, then began a slow grind as he nuzzled into the warm space at the top of Max's hoodie. "We can just keep doing this," he said, words muffled against skin, pulling down on the neckline to make more room, “if you want.”
#it was the warm space at the top of max's hoodie and the offer to not go through with it that did me in#like this was clearly all lando's idea (golf freak) but he'd give it up if max wasn't comfortable with it#in my head they're making out under the redwoods until it gets too cold#and lando shoves his freezing fingers into max's pants and max is like right that's it we're going home where it's warm#anyway#what the hell do you do with golf tees?#f1 rpf#4#max fewtrell fic#mando#nortrell#lando fic
