“When approached from the west, the Labi ridge rises abruptly from the absolute flatness of the Belait peatswamps. There is no significant range of Hills between Labi and Lambir National Park xkm away to the west in Sarawak and the views looking to the west from the logging track at Bukit Talingan are breathtaking. The eastern side of the ridge, dissected by steep gullies, dips more gently towards the floodplain and swamps of the Belait – Tutong drainage basin. From the ridge of the hill range, a 360 degree panorama is possible, encompassing all significant geomorphological features in Brunei and beyond, including Gunung Mulu, perhaps the most distinctive mountain within view. Utilising a selection of remotely sensed data (digital elevation models, drainage basin analysis, satellite imagery) it is possible to deduce much about the nature and form of the Labi Hills. In addition, access to subsurface seismic data allows us to understand the deeper geological structure of the hill range and also to restore the geological evolution of the area.
The Labi Hills have a marked asymmetry in cross section with an escarpment slope forming the steep western side and the eastern slopes representing a deeply eroded dip slope. The steepness of the western slope has a recent geological origin, being formed as the result of reverse fault movement along a pre-existing fault zone. The mountain building episode that affected all current hill ranges in Brunei can be demonstrated to have occurred up until very recently in geological time, perhaps less than 1 million years B.P. As a result of continued pulses of mountain building over the past 10 million years or so, the Labi hills have remained a young range of hills, with uplift keeping up with natural erosive processes. The numerous steep gullies that dissect the range reflect the nature of the rock sequence that forms them. Along many parts of the logging trails outcrops of rock reveal sandstone and sandstone-claystone sequences of sedimentary rocks. In detail, depositional features indicate that these rocks were laid down in shallow water conditions, similar to those seen in the present Brunei bay. In many of the narrow valleys that dissect the hills the natural processes of erosion can be seen in action.

The main two processes are water erosion / chemical dissolution and rockfall / landslide. The first process is a continual one difficult to detect on the human scale. However rockfalls are instantaneous events and have a significant visual impact on the forest, causing tree falls, blocking jungle tracks and occasionally damming rivers. The breaks in the forest canopy are very quickly occupied by the rapid growth of tree saplings and such rockfalls are often difficult to detect five years after the event. Rockfalls are also a feature along some of the ridge tracks where natural fractures in the geological formations encourage the process. One process that has a significant impact on erosion is human forest clearance. Along most logging tracks, the impact of forest clearing is very visible. Erosion is instantaneous following clearance and the sediment is deIivered into the forest valleys very rapidly over a short period of time. The impact of this is very significant on local Valley ecosystems, resulting in the silting up of forest streams and valleys and often death of a significant parts of the valley bottom forest. Numerous oil and gas seeps around the area indicate that the hills are being charged by hydrocarbons, both oil and gas, migrating up from depth in the deeper rock layers of Tutong District.
Thus the Labi hills may be thought of as a recently uplifted oil and gas field. Current and past exploration history going far back into the early part of the 19th century reveals a story of the challenging search for hydrocarbons. To date no economic pockets of hydrocarbons have been discovered by exploratory drilling and it is considered that much of the hydrocarbons have naturally leaked to the surface through the active faults and permeable sandstone layers. As a result of geological mapping in the various ridges and gullies, it can be seen that the sandstone and claystone rock layers dip gently to the west on the western slopes and gently to moderately to the east on the eastern slopes of the hill ranges; thus the hills are formed of a geological structure termed an anticline (reference to figure). Along the main logging track where bulldozing has exposed the rocks, discrete narrow zones can be seen where the rock layers are deformed vertically. These are the main faults that break up the geological layers throughout the Labi Hills. As more logging tracks are excavated, more fault zones can be discerned. Thus we can interpret the Labi Hills as a faulted anticline structure. In the future, with increased resolution of the digital elevation data (e.g. LIDAR images), it may be possible to further map the geological fault zones across the Labi Hills by imaging through the forest canopy.
In the past, geological prospecting of the Labi area has been facilitated through the acquisition of 2 dimensional seismic data, which requires the often difficult recording of remote subsurface data through peat swamps and dipterocarp forests. Despite these difficulties, Brunei Shell Petroleum recorded several 2d traverses through the Labi Hills down to a depth in excess of 3 kilometres. This allows us to analyse the nature of the rock layers in the subsurface. What we observe is that the layers can be seen to be continuous and traceable along layers dipping down to the east into the Belait / Tutong basin. In the area of the Labi Hills the layers are seen to thicken, so that the same layers in Labi are cumulatively much thicker than in Tutong. We interpret this to indicate that during the time of deposition the area in Labi was subsiding faster than in Tutong. In the modern Brunei shelf we see this occurring where on the outer continental shelf, the vast amount of sediment deposited causes the crust to extend via large rapidly moving faults (reference here). These faults are termed outer shelf growth faults. Evidence of the fault that affected the Labi Hills can be just imaged immediately to the west of the Labi hills. However this fault zone can be also associated with the subsequent uplift of the Labi Hills. We also see this feature in many geological structures in the offshore subsurface and it is currently interpreted as the result of compression and reverse re-activation of the outer shelf growth faults. These are termed inverted growth fault structures. Thus we conclude that the Labi Hills are geologically formed by an inverted and re-activated growth fault affecting sediments deposited principally in a range of shallow water marine environments. Finally, evidence of the most recent uplift of the hills can be seen along the west boundary of the hills, where sand and clay eroded from the hills have been deposited as large alluvial fans (google earth image in here). These fans have spread over the peat swamp, resulting in a subtle change of forest. These fans have been exploited by the local communities who now grow a wide range of fruit, vegetables and rice on the deposits of the eroded hills. The George Poteet/Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop 1932 Ford Tudor
To say the Deuce is the quintessential street rod is an understatement—the 1932 Ford is essentially what the street rodding industry was built upon. But in the same breath they’ve been done to death … to go any further in attempt to do what no one before has done, well, you’re no longer building a Deuce.
Ultimately, building a better Deuce doesn’t equate to building a different Deuce. Nobody knows that better than Alan Johnson who, along with his talented crew at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop (JHRS), has built Deuces a plenty over the past quarter-century since he’s been in the business. Despite what I just said about building something different, you could actually credit Johnson/JHRS for setting the bar on just how far you can go on a 1932 Ford with Doug Cooper’s stunning B400 “Deucenberg.” Along with Cooper, Johnson’s also had a long-standing relationship with George Poteet, and their latest collaboration of mind and metal just happens to be the epitome of building a better Deuce—our Triple Crown of Rodding’s Best Street Rod: George Poteet’s 1932 Ford Tudor.
From the first glance, George’s sedan is all that, but there’s much, much more than meets the eye—the kind of “more” that sets one apart from the rest (thus the Triple Crown honors), and it all starts with one of the most crucial components: stance. As Johnson explained how that came to be, “JHRS designed the 1932 Ford chassis to have the look and details of an original forged, stamped, and riveted-together frame … but a regular 1932 frame jig could not be used, as certain dimensions had not been determined until the body had been on and off the frame when figuring out the ratio of how much to section the profile and taper the front of the framerails while deciding on the amount of rear kick-up would be needed to line up the chassis and body proportions for the desired look.” That off-jig exercise resulted in an inch being sliced out of the American Stamping ’rails from the cowl rearward, the rear section kicked up twice that amount, and the front pinched accordingly. Additionally, the boxing plates are fashioned in a C-channel form and relieved with a dimple-die to resemble later 1946-1948 Ford center crossmembers. Once the tedious, detail-oriented construction was complete, the frame was set up with a full complement of JHRS’ line of suspension components (custom-machined, bright, nickel-plated radius rods and ladder bars, along with a one-off, machined 4130 chromoly I-beam with a 5-inch drop sprung off a Posies SuperSlide transverse leaf and a Winters V-8 quick-change). Steering is comprised of a Schroeder Racing cowl-steer box articulating plated and bead-blasted JHRS linkage. And of course, the opportunity would not be missed to utilize Johnson’s Kinmont Safety Stop brakes front and rear, giving the look and feel of the vintage binders they’re named after, but giving the actual stop and feel of the Wilwood discs they’re cleverly concealing. It may take some of you a minute to really admire them, as the Real Rodders 16- and 18-inch magnesium Halibrand Indy Roadster wheels all dressed in black Coker-Firestone bias rubber are hard to take your eyes off of.
Now, while the tried-and-true SBC may be what many expect to find under the hood of the average street-rodded 1932 Ford, there isn’t much of anything about George’s sedan that can be considered average, and as such, you will find no such thing under the hood. What you do see is a beautiful OHV in the form of a 339ci Ford Y-block built by Keith and Jeff Dorton (Automotive Specialists Racing Engines, Concord, North Carolina) that reportedly puts out over 400 hp and nearly as much torque. Mummert aluminum Y-block heads, early Hilborn-injection retrofit with a FAST XFI system, JHRS hand-fabbed tube headers and exhaust with Borla mufflers, and a Joe Hunt magneto that also received an electronic update all lend a hand in allowing the vintage Ford motor to really hum—regardless what gear its Bowler Performance–prepped TREMEC TKO600 is in. As far as the underhood attire goes, custom-machined components abound, from the T-Bird-esque aluminum valve covers and snorkel-style injector scoops to the beehive remote oil filter/cooler and Miller Indycar fuel bowl–inspired brake and clutch cylinder reservoirs. And if that wasn’t enough, how about that work-of-art firewall—behind its hand engine-turned and painted fascia is a 1-inch machined structural brace backed by a mirror-imaged interior panel … simply amazing.
And that brings us to the more obvious of the refinements—the body, inside and out … and some things you may never see that greatly contribute to the overall refinement. For instance, the manner in which Johnson’s chopped the top (just a little, not a lot) and raised/forward-rotated the rear wheelwells, combined with the resulting stance from the well thought out chassis design, gives the impression that the body has also been channeled. It has not; the side profile from the beltline to the rockers is still to FoMoCo factory spec. However, the upper cowl has, and the A-pillars behind it have been laid back while the leading edge was moved back an inch before a handmade four-piece hood could be fit to flow with the Tudor’s original grille shell (dropped down an inch and a half) with its fully restored gennie insert. Finish-wise, what’s not glass, rubber, or been dipped in nickel (by the always-smiling Jon Wright/Custom Chrome Plating) is now coated in PPG Jet Black—everything except for the flush-fit roof insert, that is, which is covered in black fabric. And as for the particular lighting fixtures of choice, Johnson had Greening Auto Company machine a pair of 1934 Ford commercial headlights, while VW oval taillights have been integrated into the rear bellypan.
The final chapter concluding this overview of George Poteet’s sedan takes us into its beautiful inner sanctum. (So much effort has gone into both the design and execution it would easily fill the entirety of this issue in order to address each and every detail.) First and foremost, just as they did with the intricate yet elaborate skeletal firewall structure, JHRS created an interior endoskeleton handformed out of steel with recesses that accept flush-mounted aluminum panels (the structure ultimately painted gloss black with the paneling contrast-accented in satin). Below, where normally you’d find carpet, the flooring area was created in a true flooring manner: with wood … 282 pieces, to be exact, of high-strength/high-density, aircraft-quality ply, laser cut and hand finished in ebony-colored stain. There is some traditional upholstery material that was used, that being the black leather covering the bucket seats (which started out simply as a pair of 1932 Ford seat frames), featuring aluminum backside panels matching the doors and trans tunnel. The dash is out of three-window coupe, as it afforded more legroom—for the machined instrument panel that JHRS first prototyped with a 3-D–printed model—and the instruments it now houses are literally a work of art. For the gauge development process with Classic Instruments, Johnson enlisted the services of Eric Black (e. Black Design) to digitally pen the setup, which draws inspiration from vintage, handcrafted watches and mechanical Jones Motorola tachometers. The visually bezel-less, ’40s aircraft-styled gauges are perfectly fitting, in both senses of the word. JHRS finished up the Tudor’s cockpit, as it were, with a one-off stainless pedal assembly that wraps itself nicely around the Schroeder box that’s been paired with a straight-shot column tube and one of Johnson’s Modern Vintage steering wheels.

How To Live In London Until Trump’s Impeachment
If you’re in tech and want to get an extended 5-year Visa for a fraction of the price
I. Setting the Stage
It’s old hat in the US to say things like, “If so and so gets elected, I’m moving to Canada.” These days, however, more people are actually considering it based on Trump’s discriminatory policies.
It’s no skin off our back. We live in a global world, connected 24x7 by the internet. Personally, I’ve spent at last a decade working with remote, global teams and over the last 3, doing a tech turnaround across five continents and even more time zones.
At this point, borders and governments don’t matter. Our company, Piksel, moved our global headquarters from the United States to the United Kingdom right before the election. Hasn’t changed a thing about how our employees work together and with our customers across the entire world.
If I’m reading the tea leaves, and this current US government keeps going down the same path, our most valuable companies might consider doing the same. It sounds weird, but it’s really pretty easy for an Apple, Google, Microsoft, or Amazon to move its HQ to a different country.
Apple, for instance, has most of their cash overseas (from the US HQ perspective). All of their products are manufactured overseas. And the majority of their customers are based overseas. The only problem is they stupidly built a big-ass spaceship that, get this, doesn’t go to space or even move for that matter, in California. Why? Because they decided to build a company locked to a local talent pool.
They based the majority of their high-value talent in Silicon Valley. Same with Facebook. Same with Google. Sure, they have offices overseas, but it’s not where their center of gravity is.
The company that will disrupt Apple is just being started now. They aren’t going to be “based” in a specific location with one of the highest costs of living in the world. They will be spread across major industrial centers globally and eventually, have an office in space.
The businesses of the future won’t have a “center of gravity”. They will have “cells”. One goes down due to a catastrophe, the business goes on. Redundancy is the first rule of reliability in the software industry, yet the “best” in the world seemed to miss this one lock, stock, and smoking barrel.
II. The Future of Citizenship
What does this mean for citizens of the United States, or any country for that matter? In the long-term it might mean the end of protectionist countries and instead begin an international citizenship where you pay taxes based on the amount of seconds spent within each country (based on the GPS data in your phone).
You are now free to move about the galaxy.
The “country” of the future will help its citizens live a global life, and in return these citizens will call that country their “home base”. Much like a luxury apartment complex, countries will begin marketing themselves to individuals about their “amenities” and in return citizens will pay a monthly subscription fee for global protection, priority access to global healthcare for a higher tier, easier travel arrangements, and a certain educational cirriculum while on the go for its children.
The future will be less about borders and more about removing them.
Which is why Trump’s vision for America is a step backwards, not a step forwards, on the roadmap of humanity towards an interstellar species.
So, if you’re like us, maybe you’re curious about your options to begin living this way today, even if the global sociopolitical system isn’t in place quite yet. We did a little digging into what it would take to get a Visa to the UK for folks who read Humanizing Tech.
And boy do we have some fun news for you.
III. Get a UK Visa, Lickity Split
Want to set up some redunancy in your own life? Worried about Trump enflaming zealots from other countries and having it impact your life? If you work for a company and its CEO starts behaving badly, you can just quit and get a better job with a better culture elsewhere. Not so easy when you’re physically located and financially tied to a specific country.
The first step is redundancy. You need to set up a bank account in a different country. You need to have a living situation defined in a different country. You need to have the paperwork ready in a different country.
You need to do all of this before you need it. Because if shit hits the fan, it’s already too late.
How do you do this?
You need to apply for a UK Visa.
The UK has a wonderful governmental policy for their short-term Visa program, where it’s cheaper and faster if you are an “exceptional talent”. They last updated the policy on December 19, 2016. Why would they do this? It’s a recruting tactic grounded in British common sense:
We offer this route for exceptionally talented individuals in the fields of science, humanities, engineering, the arts and digital technology to enrich the United Kingdom’s knowledge economy and cultural life.
Doesn’t that sound just like the philosophies of Humanizing Tech? Sure does to us. You can stay for 5 years, well past Trump’s term of office, work anywhere you like and job hop if you like, and your kids can come with you.
The catch is they only allow 1,000 people to do it every year, starting in April:
But, if you get accepted, you get to stay years longer than a regular Visa holder, even if you’re an entrepreneur, and it costs about $1,000 less.
At this point, you’re likely curious if you quality. Beginning on page 19, it lists all of the disciplines that apply. There are a lot, so I’d suggest you click through to view each of them. Below are a few related specifically to tech, but it runs the gamut from bio to chem to physics to sociopolitical.
Basically if you’re in a professional technology job and you can prove you’ve been doing good work in that area, you qualify. Of course, the more success you’ve enjoyed, the better it is. And guess how they ask about your experience. They want to see your StackOverflow account, your Github profile, other things you’ve put out into the world to help others.
I’ve often found that many in the tech industry just sit back and hope that someone’s going to find their talent and magically offer them some crazy job. That’s not really how it works. And because many of the recruiters are just looking for any sort of programming skill wherever they can find it, there really isn’t much incentive to put your knowledge out there.
One of the reasons this exists is to help with that problem. Do good things because you like doing good things. You never know when it might come in handy.
IV. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
At this point, it begs the question of whether this writer is going to go through the application process. Considering we fall squarely into a few of the ‘high value’ workers bucket, which is separate from but more expansive than the ‘Exceptional Talent’ Visa, we’re thinking about it.
It never hurts to have a back-up plan. It only hurts if you didn’t set one up in the first place and then you wished you had one. In this case, filling out a few forms, paying a few hundred bucks, and then having the ability to come and go between the US and the UK over the next 5 years isn’t going to hurt me in the slightest.
I’ve already been back and forth between the two countries countless times over the past 3 years. So much so that border control keeps prodding me to apply so I can get through customs faster than that hour-long line.
I already have Global Entry, which makes returning to JFK from overseas as painless as possible. Instead of waiting in two massive lines for customs and baggage, I go to a kiosk, scan my passport, tap a few buttons, and bypass both lines. I’m off the plane and in a cab in 15 minutes, mostly spent just walking through the mile-long terminal.
If I can do the same thing on the other side of the pond, and bring my family with me at a moments notice, plus stay longer than 3 months at a time, call me curious.
I suppose the next question you’ll have is, “Should you do it?”
I think it depends on your level of frustration, but also mobility. If you’ve lived your entire life in a single city, hardly travel, and the government’s actions don’t affect your everyday life, it’s probably not for you.
If, however, you end up traveling often for work, find the digital nomad lifestyle intriguing, and find yourself worried about what a protectionist administration could mean for your professional and personal future, then by all means, dip that fountain pen in some ink.
