“This thing is legally dubious and therefore technically unenforceable.” Is not a “useless liberal gotcha” it’s how legalism works in this country. Tying up stupidly worded EOs in court is the quickest way to keep them from being implemented. It is the definition of “doing something.” But it doesn’t usually involve much tweeting so of course a certain type of leftist feels obligated to mock it.
#challenging an EO in court keeps it from being implemented for a very long time and that’s a good thing#not only does it *not get implemented* for usually at least a year as it gets appealed over and over again#it also distracts conservative resources from going full steam ahead because they have to dedicate resources to defending their bullshit in#and the dumber their bullshit is the longer it takes to defend and the less they can get done#this is materially good so yes saying ‘this EO is poorly worded and can be interpreted to mean that all people are now female’#is a valid point to make

"The protected land includes a one-acre fish hatchery at Unicorn Lake in eastern Maryland and the sprawling Green Ridge State Forest in the west. It includes shorelines, farms and woods around Naval Air Station Patuxent River, and the Chesapeake Forest Lands, some 75,000 wooded acres that are home to species like bald eagles and the once-endangered Delmarva fox squirrel.
None of it can be developed, and all of it has helped Maryland reach a landmark conservation goal six years ahead of schedule, before any other state that’s joined an effort known as “30 by 30.”
The program is part of a global initiative to protect 30 percent of the Earth’s land and waters by 2030. In 2023, Maryland joined the effort and a year later, Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, announced that the goal had already been met. Nearly 1.9 million acres of land has been permanently protected from development, and the state has set a new target, to conserve 40 percent of its land by 2040...
Officials, land trustees and environmentalists said a unique set of factors led to Maryland’s success.
Since 1969, Maryland has levied a 0.5 percent transfer tax on real estate sales and used it for Program Open Space, which enables the state to acquire green spaces from voluntary sellers and purchase conservation easements from private landowners.
Owners like farmers and forest managers can still work the land, but agree that it can never be developed, even if the land changes hands.
Crucially, conservation has bipartisan support at the state level, said Elizabeth Carter, a land protection director at The Nature Conservancy. She said federal and state agencies, nonprofit groups and land trusts have worked together with shared goals, which helped the state meet its target sooner than many expected.
“That’s something we celebrate, and it’s exciting,” she said...
Josh Kurtz, Maryland’s secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, said that while the state had to balance conservation needs with development pressures and housing demand, natural spaces were crucial to offsetting planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions and to protecting the Chesapeake Bay.
“Being able to sequester carbon and mitigate climate impacts makes us more resilient in the face of climate change,” Mr. Kurtz said. “It’s also one of our key water quality strategies.” ...
According to Mr. Kurtz’s office, land conservation measures have prevented about 85,000 pounds of nitrogen and 6,000 pounds of phosphorus, which fuel algae blooms and starve water of oxygen, from flowing into the bay each year. The University of Maryland calculated that the state’s trees and forests absorbed and locked away 6.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2023...
While the state is still pushing toward its 40 by 40 target, there’s been a setback. Facing a $3.3 billion budget shortfall, the Maryland General Assembly recently voted to take $100 million from Program Open Space and other state conservation programs over the next four years. But A.J. Metcalf, a spokesman for the state’s natural resources department, said the programs were projected to generate $468 million through fiscal year 2029, enough to continue to acquire land for conservation “at a normal pace.”
Mr. Kline said he hoped that the state surpassed its next goal. “I would certainly hate to see our foot come off the pedal after 40 percent,” he said. “We feel like we’ve got something pretty special that’s worth protecting.”"

From the article:
“We really kind of refer to this as our third aqueduct,” says John Bednarski, an interim assistant general manager at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California — a powerful agency, as the largest wholesale provider of water in the nation and owner of the Colorado River Aqueduct. The “third aqueduct” Bednarski is referring to is not another man-made appendage stretching to the Colorado River Basin or into Northern California but rather a project that’s designed to stay local — and sustainable: Pure Water Southern California would recycle wastewater, treat it and produce 150 million gallons of water each day, accounting for about 10 percent of the agency’s local water demands, according to Bednarski. “So it’s going to be a major contributor,” he says. [...] The L.A. Department of Water and Power is pursuing a similar recycling project. And in 2022, 26 cities and wholesale water providers that pull from the Colorado River wrote a memorandum of understanding committing to focusing on water recycling and reuse. The signatories, including Metropolitan, often point to Las Vegas as a model for recycling wastewater to reduce its total Colorado River use and increase the amount of water available for use. Nevada has long faced scarcity; of all the states, it receives the smallest share of the river: just 1.8 percent of all the water rights. By treating and reusing nearly all of its indoor water, the Las Vegas water purveyor effectively uses the same water over and over, expanding its supply. Now Las Vegas officials, along with Arizona water managers, are looking to the Pure Water project to further shore up supplies on the Colorado River. Their thinking: If Metropolitan can reduce its Colorado River use, its unused water could flow to Nevada and Arizona, providing a needed boost in an era when there is little to spare. In that way, water recycling projects in one area can have consequences across watersheds."

As we've immersed ourselves in local politics in WA, I've come to realize something: if you've ever enjoyed a patch of intact wild space, there are probably dozens of activists who went to court and council meetings to keep it intact so that you were able to. These things aren't a given.
These folks go to court to challenge DNR and logging corporations to maintain the state's policies surrounding endangered species, legacy forest and old growth conservation, and habitat protection. They're CONSTANTLY at work nitpicking sloppy/negligent business by the DNR. www.wlfdc.org
Just going and sitting in on ONE court hearing about a local patch of woods in a land trust and getting a taste of the level of underhandedness the govt AND corps employ to get that money for those big trees has completely changed my view of going for a walk in the woods.

Headcanon that Tuvok heads a team of rotating volunteers who routinely clean the ship (he decided this was necessary after walking around and doing that 'checking for dust' thing - I think there are usually devices that automatically clean starships during the night but Voyager wasn't outfitted with them and implementing them now would be a complete waste of time, energy, resources etc.) and you can tell what deck they're on by where they're playing music (one of the volunteers' ideas.) Dangerous things like the aftermath of some sort of attack are for Security Only but the cleaning crew is just to keep the ship looking spick and span! No one really wants to be on the cleanup crew because Tuvok has a set amount of time he's estimated each deck should take and he's budgeted accordingly. You also have to get up super early (or not go to bed) because of course you can't interrupt regular ship's functions with cleaning! Also you know Tuvok put Vulcan spirituals in the cleaning playlist. So yeah, the term "volunteer" is QUITE loose. Members of security who get sorted into the cleanup crew are SO efficient though. You pray you get multiple security members during your volunteer slot.
#star trek voyager#I think Voyager should've leaned a bit more into the fact#that the ship is their home (and that they have to conserve resources)#Tuvok (wearing a rag around his mouth to keep dust out of there): Pick up the pace Ensign.#Ensign: (contemplating murder - running on 1 hour of sleep) Yes sir.#voy#Tuvok#st voy#Tuvok IS cleaning too - he's cleaning the most! He's just also annoying#it does feel good to look back at your job well done though <3 and then get pissed at your friends for tracking mud through the halls#I Just Cleaned That!!!!!!!!!

Choke
i could show you the corpses,
whales with bellies cut open, insides writhing with plastic,
skin peeling, bloated and stinking,
tongues stiff in their mouths,
as if death came mid-scream.
i could take your hands and drag them through the filth,
let you feel the slime coating the riverbeds,
where fish rot with their flesh half-melted,
where water foams thick and yellow,
where the air stings your eyes and your lungs seize,
and you finally understand what it means to suffocate.
i could force you to kneel in the ashes of a forest,
dig your fingers into the soot,
pull out something brittle, something charred,
watch it crumble in your grip like the ribs of something
that used to be alive,
watch the black dust coat your skin,
seep into your pores,
stain you with the death you ignored.
i could take your face in my hands,
press it into the earth,
make you taste the oil,
make you chew on the bones of something
that never had the chance to grow,
make you swallow what you helped destroy
until it claws its way back up your throat.
but even then,
would you care?
or would you still laugh,
shrug,
roll your eyes,
and move on?
