#Resource Extraction Robots AU

Okay; The likelihood of me making my Resource Extraction Robots AU into a full-blown... anything.... for the world to see is slim to none, but after looking at some Sonic IDW comic covers and dwelling on the concept of making it into an A03 fic, here's a thing I did.

Don't know if it'll be expanded upon, but still a thing I did that I am proud of and wanted to share with the world nonetheless.

Ignore the bad spelling!!!! I drew these at work!! I don't have name for this Au but it's a weird combination of the royalty aus I've seen and BioShock and freaking Anastasia and what have I done!!!!

Anyway lore:

In this world some people are gifted a magical ability. They are called the gifted.

Freddy, Bonnie, Roxy, Sun and Moon are gifted.

Freddy has the ability to admit a calming arua within a thirty mile radius of himself

Bonnie can teleport himself, people and objects but what he's teleporting greatly depends on how much energy he has. He also has to be able to see it.

Roxy can run fast, and move quickly. Making her a hard target to hit.

Sun can tell when people are lying to him, and can even make people speak the truth when making physical contact. How ever he can only do this when it is daytime, or well lit

Moon can make people fall asleep but has to come into physical contact to do so. His abilities can only be done at night or in the dark. Under a full moon Moon can emit a pulse that puts anyone within fifty feet of him to sleep.

The crew:

Foxy is the captain of a ship that is primarily sea bound, but can also fly if he wanted it to.the ship is called the Daystar. Because calling the ship the daycare or the superstar sounded stupid to me

Freddy is the first mate, and is Foxy's right hand man

Bonnie would be first mate if he wasn't so unpredictable. Instead he is a scam artist and is often a distraction for the crew from the local authorities .

Chica is the chef of the crew. She often uses various kitchen ware as weapons since it's what she's more comfortable handling.

Roxy is the crews mechanic keeping the shop from falling apart as well as Foxy's robotic prosthetic from malfunctioning.

Sun tried to act as the crews navigator but often gets distracted. Moon will usually subtly alter their course to correct him without Sun noticing.

Moon is their stealth man. He gets in, gets the job done and leaves.

Plot ( if there is any)

Sun and Moon come from a kingdom where gifted are seen as cattle. Despite how rare they are. The big corporation of that particular kingdom buys gifted people and children and even kidnaps them off the street. What the corporation does with the gifted isn't hidden from the public, but the extent is not well known.

They essentially try to use the abilities of the gifted as a resource to make various products. Weapons, home goods, medicine, ECT.

Sun and Moon were sold by their mother when their gifts became known to her. The corporation was running tests on Sun to try and figure out how to use his abilities to make a lie detector for their law enforcement. He was still in the observation stage.

Moon had moved past the observation stage, as his gift was a tad simpler to figure out how to extract. They regularly drew blood from him which made him weak and frail when Foxy finally finds them.

Foxy discovered Sun and Moon while trying to bust Bonnie out of the corporation's labs. He took them with him. Due to the rarity of sleep magic this put a decent sized bounty on Foxy and his crew who up until this point had not obtained a sizable one. Despite this they managed to avoid capture for the next sixteen years. Raising Sun and Moon as his own.

The corporation ( unbeknownst to the Daystar crew) had been using Moon's blood to make a sleep aid that they sold worldwide. They called this sleep moondrops. It became the most powerful and popular sleep aid. The corporation had a relatively decent back supply of Moon's blood but were running dangerously low. So they raised the bounty on Moon.

With Moon's bounty ridiculously high Foxy worried for his boys'safety. He won't always be there to protect them after all. He heard through the grapevine of a noble lady who's trying marry off her brother's. Figuring Moon and Sun would be safest if connected to a noble family he talks Moon into faking nobility and agreeing to an arranged marriage with the nobleman.

DJ, though at first frustrated with his sisters meddling since he wasn't even next in line for head of the family, falls head over heels for Moon fast. Though he can't help but feel like something is off. Like Moon is hiding from something.

Regarding: Rain World After Dark AU

I don't know how to explain what it actually is, but it's not really an AU. It's more like this microsoft paint thing below.

Now that I made this, I think I'm gonna consider it a "Divergence" instead of an AU.

The reason for this divergence is human needs in a human-ruled space faring civilization.

In the year 3499, the government-backed space station named "Valkyria" detected signals originating from a planet known as "Cr1TiKal," a location oddly missing from most maps. Delving into the matter, researchers uncovered a single recorded visit to this planet. The individual who ventured there found the environment profoundly inhospitable, leading to a decision to steer clear of Cr1TiKal. It's suspected that the name of the planet drew inspiration from the early 21st-century streamer MoistCr1TiKaL. Curiously, the letter "L" in the name remained lowercase, a mystery unto itself.

The government behind Valkyria regarded Cr1TiKal as an opportunity to demonstrate its significance to The Republic of Eden, the prevailing and influential governing body of that era. The potential for resource extraction from Cr1TiKal also enticed Valkyria, offering an alternative means of financial gain outside centralized governance.

Upon the initial arrival of Valkyria and the commencement of colonization efforts, interactions with the native biomechanical superstructure inhabitants, self-identified as "Iterators," remained neutral. This group was associated with the planet and held an intriguing relationship with Valkyria.

Valkyria's stay lasted approximately one month before an inexplicable departure occurred, leaving the local inhabitants and outside observers perplexed due to the lack of a clear explanation for their sudden exit.

Before vacating the premises, Valkyria made a request for the deployment of 20 Triconsts, 6 Quadconsts, and 1 Pentaconst. The "Const" series, a line of versatile multi-legged robots initially developed for construction tasks, was the subject of this request. Triconsts, with their three legs, stood at a height of 80 feet, while Quadconsts featured four legs and a height comparable to that of a single leg of the "Looks to the Moon" superstructure. The Pentaconst, possessing five legs, boasted a height 1.5 times that of an average iterator. Additionally, an array of Spider Probes, smaller and more agile sentient machines, were left behind by Valkyria. These probes were programmed to assist the Iterators near the abandoned colonies, with their primary objective being the preservation of these structures over an extended period. There is more to this story, but I don't feel like typing shit, running it through GPT, and then editing the shit from GPT. For now, this is what you guys get. But trust me, there is WAY more.

After Dark is a "sequel" to a 6+ year old story known by the basic name "The Timeline." In 3500, all stars begin to go dark, but somehow still continue to generate heat. No one is able to figure out why (and how) this is. This star darkness problem sent human civilization into madness, dividing it up into anything from small city-states to very very small galactic nations. After Dark takes place in a huge multiverse where just about anything is possible because of the almost infinite amount of universes, which therefore gives you a ton of creativity. The current year is 5117, but other dates may be mentioned. After Dark has a discord server, but you need to meet some requirements to join it. Invasive Species AU. Megamom and Devious, BUT 👀 he rescued her from Something when she was just a wittle baby, and a la Tarzan, Dot grows up exclusively in the helicopter flock and thinks she's one of them. She can speak neo cybex with a cute "squishy accent" and wears armor made of scavenged part. Kind of like those mech rigs for cosplay, but with roller blades or a jet pack so she can get around faster.

I am obsessed with this! Megatron accidentallying himself into having tiny baby Dorothy in his custody, maybe fished her out of the wreckage of a car accident. Her parents were travelling with their new baby daughter to visit family, and a sudden rainstorm made the road slippery and treacherous. Megatron is drawn to the scene because the crying of a baby human sounds somewhat similar to a sparkling's distress call. Finds her miraculously in tact, no broken bones, only a few scrapes. Her parents bear no life signal anymore, squashed in the front half of the vehicle after it lost control and plummetted over a small cliff (like one of those 8-10 drops you see in the sandhills). They died on impact, he thinks, and carefully extracts the infant from the vehicle. There's no human settlements anywhere near here, and she bears the scent of none he is familiar with.

He takes her back to the flock and she's the talk of the town--such a teeny tiny organic sparkling! Disproportionate body and unfused endoskeleton, she's the most fragile thing they've ever seen

Devious earns her name quickly--she develops very swiftly compared to Cybertronian sparkling, and she turns into a very crafty, resourceful kid in the blink of an eye. She's one of them, no doubts about it--she speaks the same language as them and yes, she has a cute "squishy" accent. There's some words and tones her vocal chords just aren't capable of producing, but she does her best.

I love the idea of her making herself armor. Megatron helps. Every so often one of them will go out to gather more nesting material, and she'll get to pick through what they find to outfit herself with. She wants to be just like them and fit into her family, so she's probably been making these mech rigs since she was a kid. Megatron has saved every single armor set she ever made. Fight me

Her first time encountering another human she's probably into her late teenage years or even a young adult. She's excited because woah, you look like me! You're small and squishy and have filament on your helm too! She doesn't know any human languages so communicating with her own kind is definitely gonna be hella difficult.

She probably makes the news when someone finds her. Like there's just a whole semi-feral human that's been LIVING WITH THE ROBOTS. It's probably a global story

Lucian Enfuego (aka Afton’d Lucian): A traveling serial killer who ended up being abducted and experimented on by Elder Afton in 1984, his soul being ‘overwritten’ by him over time. Murdered Vincent Heliotrope in 1983 then used his name on a virus that screwed up the Toy Animatronics. Killed the 5 Missing Children and the Butterfly Child in 1987. Was caught and executed for his crimes. His younger sister was the first to realize his soul was ‘stolen’ and spent her life trying to get it back from the Aftons. Referred to as the 1987 Purple Guy. Alex Cho aka Router (the short man): A mercenary, hacker-for-hire, who is also a son of Lucian. He ran away from his mother’s emotional abuse to follow his father’s trail and destroy the evidence that could clear Vincent and Jeremy Sr.’s names, as well as kill the surviving ‘witnesses’ of the 1987 Incident. His work partner (and best friend) is Panther. Was hired by Michael Afton to go to Freddy’s Pizza and retrieve Marionette and Balloon Boy or their data drives containing information about Remnant collected during the 1987 Incident. Ended up killed via springlock failure in Springtrap. Referred to as the Springtrap Purple Guy.

Sydney Elizabeth Michaels aka Panther (the big guy in pink): A mercenary with a tendency to abduct people of strength and essentially brainwash them via torture and Stockholm syndrome to serve as his living weapons. As a teen he was hired by Elder Afton to put Fredbear’s Family Diner out of business; poisoned and killed 11 children there while wearing a pink security uniform for a disguise, successfully shutting down the restaurant. His older brother helped him run away from home to escape police and keep the rest of their family out of trouble. Went with Router to Freddy’s as part of the retrieval job and developed an obsession with Mike’s strength. Ended up killed by Freddy and the gang for trying to abduct him and was soul-bound to a Paper Plate Pal. Referred to as the Pink Guy.

William Afton II: The CEO of Afton Robotics and Fazbear Entertainment, owner of Circus Baby’s Pizza World Party and Rentals (Sister Location). Stepped into the position some time after his father’s disappearance and found the secret information about Remnant, transfers, and the experiments to move/copy souls between vessels. Decided to continue the research and find a way to transfer himself from his sickly body into a healthy one. Searched for a low-level employee that could be compatible with his deceased sister’s Remnant to observe if transfer to a living body was possible, unaware his grandfather successfully did so but was unable to record the success. Ended up killed by his sister via Scooping Room. Referred to as Canon Purple Guy.

Emelia Afton: The daughter of Michael Afton who was killed by Circus Baby and soul-bound to her endoskeleton. She was stored in the Underground Facility by her father, who desperately tried to find a way to free her soul and resurrect her in his father’s Remnant research. Years passing with her trapped ended up eroding her sanity and now she only cares for escaping into a ‘perfect’ body that will allow her to be beautiful, using anything and anyone as a means to that end. Normally looks like an innocent little girl ghost to lure others into assisting her before killing them once their usefulness ends. Her ‘adult’ form was created by absorbing a digitized Lucian into herself to take advantage of his knowledge of murder techniques. Soul-bound to Circus Baby v1, later becoming Ennard. Referred to as Purple Gal.

William Afton I aka Elder Afton: The founder and owner of Afton Robotics. Has an aggressive competitiveness and desire to be the best in creating robots and animatronics. Jealousy towards the ones in Fredbear’s had him hire Sydney to force the diner to close so it could be bought up by his shell company, Fazbear Entertainment, and have the animatronics sent to him for reverse engineering. In his pursuit to creating the most advanced artificial intelligence software for his creations, he discovered Remnant and its properties, experimenting on low-level employees and abducted children to learn how to extract and transfer Remnant. His experiment on Lucian, an intern at the time, culminated in a successful digitized download of Remnant and memories, creating the Lucian Master File. Elder’s desire to live longer to continue his research and curiosity on his hypothesis had him attempt to transfer his own Remnant into Lucian’s body. While mostly successful, the transfer revealed a drawback in that loss of Remnant without allowing regeneration or replacement causes loss of sanity in the donor. This discovery was never documented; on the final stage of transfer, Elder released Lucian from containment and was killed by him. His soul torn in two, part went with Lucian to grow and consume him, part remained in the Facility, laying dormant until awakened by Springtrap, where he then hijacked control of the animatronic for himself. Referred to as Original Purple Guy or First Purple Guy.

Elizabeth Afton: Bionics Engineer, overseer of R&D of Afton Robotics, wife of Michael Afton. She’s responsible for researching and building ways for the animatronics and robots to move as fluidly and ‘naturally’ as a human. She has a cold love for her husband due to blaming him for allowing her favored daughter to die at Baby’s hands. She assisted Elder Afton in his Remnant research and went back to it after her daughter’s death to continue it in secret, searching for her own way to continue living longer and restore her daughter. After Michael’s disappearance and William’s death, she followed the trail of outgoing resources from Afton Robotics to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and Parties to recover Emelia’s Remnant. She was only able to get it back in fragments, so she devised a trap to gather fragments of Remnant from multiple past guards in order to rebuild and stabilize Emelia’s soul. When that plan was foiled, she escaped and decided to continue her search for future host bodies for herself, rebuilding Fazbear Entertainment via video games and using a copy of the Lucian Master File to seek out viable hosts. She plans to use the money from the sales and her newly abducted Reluctant Follower to create another trap to lure in her intended target. Referred to by name.

Michael Afton: Son of Elder Afton, CEO of Afton Robotics and Fazbear Entertainment after Elder’s death. His relationship with his father was distant and strained at best, which worsened after his death as Circus Baby’s programming had her kill his daughter when she wandered over alone. He pulled away from his wife and their relationship grew rocky over the tragedy. Being confronted by Lucian’s sister some time later over the fate of her brother’s soul had Michael searching for whether there was any truth to it; upon discovering his father’s Remnant research and notes, he found a desperate hope that this could be key to reviving his daughter. While he was also attracted to Lucian’s sister for her more vivacious nature, he eventually had to threaten her into leaving him alone so as to keep the discovery of Remnant and soul transfer a secret. He left behind the company and his family after receiving the data on the 1987 Incident in order to find a method of using Remnant to revive Emelia without causing more deaths. Failing that and realizing that Emelia had gone insane and murderous from isolation and desperation, he chose instead to try and destroy everything connected to the Remnant experiments, bringing everything that was affected by it together in one place to be burnt so the Remnant would be destroyed. He was unaware that his wife was also involved. Died in the flames that consumed FFP&P. Referred to as Son of Canon Purple Guy.

Lucian Master File: The ‘pure’ download of Lucian Enfuego’s digitized Remnant and memories. Stripped of anything that could humanize him or create empathy with others, the Master File only seeks to cause as much death and havoc as possible. He generates copies of himself to carry out his plans, assimilating information from them while he remains safely out of sight and harm’s way. The first copy of himself ever created he stripped of similar power to force him to be weaker and gave him over to William Afton II to use in his experiments, which resulted in the copy breaking away from him so drastically he became unique and Master File lost control and connection to him. He only ever assists someone when he feels he’s able to use them to further his own ambitions in the process. Originally the controlling software to Afton Robotics’s main computer, he managed to escape destruction there by coding himself onto chipsets in protected hardware, which later allowed him to escape into the video game software that scanned those chipsets. Referred to as Master File or Glitchtrap.

...screw it. I’ll *maybe* write an AU that’s from the point Takashi first crash lands back to Earth.

You know, one that has him having a twin and a preKerb friendgroup made up of Ryou, Lisa, Matt, Veronica, and Ginger (in my fanon she’s Hunk’s sister)? You know...Shiro actually having family and friends that then includes the Paladins? (Oh...and people actually at his launch other than Keith and the Holts. Well, the ones who weren’t currently deployed on their own missions at that time.)

Lots of rambling and thought-dumping as to how that might look plot-wise in a broader sense under the cut (along with other fixits)

Veronica’s seen ribbing her younger brother but also trying to cheer him and his assigned team back up before carrying on with her Garrison Job.

The Trio still sneaks out and runs into Keith causing not-well-thought-out shenanigans beyond a successful diversion.

The Trio+Keith run headlong into Ryou, Lisa, Veronica, and Ginger who had the exact same idea as their younger siblings/the idiot (former) cadet. They ARE Shiro’s friends, afterall. Only, they’re the “scientists” and stick Iverson and the REAL scientists with the sedatives instead of Shiro. (They also made more of an effort to keep an eye on Keith than Adam ever did. They’re also well-aware that Pidge is actually Katie and keep an eye on her, too, but decided not to push her about the shoddy disguise. They *might* be covering for her regarding Iverson&Co, though.)

(Also, the Shack belonged to Ryou and Shiro. But Keith’s staying there, too. Ryou’s not happy about Keith trying to bust Shiro out without him.)

After the initial confusion, the Actual Adults (barely!) TM take over and have everyone pile into their cars while they try to shake off the Garrison and eventually regroup back at the Shack. (Keith’s driving Shiro’s old bike back since he’s the one who took it out. Shiro’s placed in the back of Ryou’s car with the seats laid flat. Ryou’s back there trying to keep him restrained until they can do triage, with Lisa taking over as the driver. Everyone else is with Veronica and Ginger. Or, they all took a ScoobyDoo van from the start vs several cars.)

Shiro actually recognizes the entire Trio, but introduces himself, anyway. (He’s a pilot, not an engineer or analyst. And although Veronica and Ginger bragged about their baby brothers and Matt about his genius gremlin sister, and Ryou definitely bragged about Hunk’s progress, it just didn’t quite work out for him to meet the cadets personally, save maybe Pidge—PR, aviation instruction, and Kerberos prep kinda ate away at his time. He did keep an eye on Lance’s progress, but...any remnants of time kinda went to Adam before the breakup and mentoring Keith. (Ryou kinda just insisted on crashing in Shiro’s post-breakup issued room until the twins finally pooled their resources to buy the Shack.))

The hunt for the Blue Lion goes about the same, only the group’s larger. Blue still picks Lance, kidnaps everyone else like a box of kittens, and goes for a joyride before getting serious. (“YEP. That’s definitely your Lion, Lance,” Veronica snarks.) The same Paladins experience the Vision as before, with the others giving them strange looks when they all randomly zonked out in tandem for half a second.

They eventually end up in Arus’s solar system. (The adults are very, very glad that they didn’t ever have time for pets. (And in this version, Ginger isn’t already a mother, and the Adults are all about 23-26, give or take.) Then internally freaking out about kidnapping a bunch of kids by accident, and kicking themselves about not having any sort of letters ready for everyone’s family. That...could’ve been thought out better (and moves to the top of their priority list. Galaxies away or not, mean purple aliens kinda implies they’ll be gone for awhile. With...a bunch of kids.)

They wake up Allura, but Ryou’s the one to catch her. Veronica twists Lance’s ear before he ever opens her mouth. (“Yeah yeah I know. She’s gorgeous. But not the time.”) (RIP, Lance’s ears...they’re not safe in any reality.) Allura and Coran pull up their starcharts...and discover the same, awful news. The adults herd everybody out to give the Alteans some space to grieve in private.

Allura starts to describe the Lions, but the group interrupts her. (“Uh...we kinda saw a big giant robot in our heads?” “Yeah, and it was freaky watching them all look like zombies for half a second, so hard pass.”) The rest of it goes on as usual, only Lance gets whacked for self-postulating, and Blue actually gets a description this time.

The soon-to-be Paladins split up to look for their Lions, with Keith still at the Castle. Ryou and Ginger set to work helping Coran get the Castle operational again, while Lisa and Veronica take on the task of helping Allura sift through 10,000 years of data backlogged.

Obviously certain events like Sendak capturing the Castle and Crystal Venom would play out somewhat differently. For one, neither Ryou or Lisa would leave Shiro alone. And at least one of them would probably stand with Coran about the ethics about all of it, even if they reluctantly agree that it’s the best option they have.

As far as Shiro’s disappearance, they catch on a LOT sooner that Black’s damaged and actually curling protectively around Shiro. (You know. Like Toothless and Hiccup. Just sayin’.) (As well as an explanation as to why Shiro ended up stored within BlackLion during the fight to protect him, while the other Paladins were not by their own Lions.)

Jiro still shows up thinking he’s Shiro, but has the others gently inform him that no, no he’s not. (Shiro may or may not be already out of BlackLion and recovering.) Jiro consents to having extensive tests done. They find all of Haggar’s implants (and discover that Shiro actually got stuck with a few of his own that Black separated from him when they extracted him out...now that they know what they’re looking at. Oh, and the Blacktashi Bond’s still well and good, but Shiro does have more trauma to work through. At best Shiro’s unconscious the entire time he was stored as energy particle. At worst? Sensory deprivation and FullBody Amputation. Nothing about Shiro being suspended in the Void could’ve been pleasant, even though Black was well-intentioned.) Once free from her control, Jiro’s more determined than ever to take her and the Galra empire down. (As well as freeing the other clones. The others share that sentiment, but especially the Shirogane Twin, who decide to accept Jiro as their “triplet from another mother”.)

Jiro still longs to be a Paladin, though. Allura and Lisa gradually over time begin to share that same longing. Eventually they feel a sort of phantom bond that mimics the one Jiro has with Black not just with the OG Lions, but also an even stronger one they can’t quite pinpoint. They eventually learn that they’re being Called by the second meteor.

Lotor’s still a rival right about the same time. However, by the time he tricks the Paladins into going after the meteor for him, the Castle’s a better match for his ship vs him getting away. (Because, you know. The OG Paladins are still with their Lions. And although Allura went with them to explore the distress call, Coran had Jiro&Co to help him man the Castle.) They fight to a standstill, then eventually call a ceasefire. They’re better about uncovering WHY Lotor wants the meteor/quintessence. Also the surviving Alteans are members of his crew, albeit still disguised to protect them from the Empire. They evacuate the colony vs sticking around. Lotor wants the quintessence first to end balmera mining and komar stripping, but also to have a second attempt at making the colony work.

Allura and Coran are shocked to learn that they’re not the last of their race, but eventually Lotor agrees to carefully continue checking Honerva’s research with Team Voltron&Co before deciding what to do with the comet, and if Lotor’s idea for “unlimited quintessence” is even possible...which eventually leads them to Orionde. (*drops better explanation about that pocket dimension HERE*) Also, the other Paladins probably make it through with both Allura and Lotor in-tow once they stop fighting the Lion and instead evade or request permission to enter (hey, it’d be a nice callback to A Bond Cannot Be Forced), but only Allura and Lotor make it all the way to the end.

When Allura and Lotor rejoin the Paladins and the rest of their crews, Lotor agrees to abandon his attempts to reopen the Quintessence Rift on the remains of Daibazaal--at best Haggar could then seize it and do unspeakable damage. At worst, all of Reality folds in on itself and collapses. There are no shortcuts.

Team Voltron press to know why the Galra covet so much quintessence in the first place:if it’s just to power their technology, then surely it’s past time to discover other means of energy. Lotor reluctantly reveals that the Galra are essentially extinct: what started as a way to extend their lifespans gradually mutated them overtime into no longer being genetically compatible with other members of their own race. They either continue taking the quintessence, or die off. Team Voltron then questions if Lotor and his Generals have that same problem--turns out, yes and no. The clones are finally freed (*cue tense battle here*), and like Jiro, many of them are pissed and choose to join the Rebels’ Ranks in various fields as both payback and a genuine desire to help and explore.

Eventually there’s another showdown with Zarkon, Haggar, and Company, spanning either into one massive battle or several smaller ones happening at once. Zarkon’s more powerful than ever thanks to the stolen Shirogane Quintessence Haggar used to revive him (that he continued to nom on up until the clones were rescued, although he still had his stockpile to ration)...but his attempts to seize the BlackLion/bust apart Voltron that way fail spectacularly. The Bond cannot be forced, and blacktashi healed eachother. 

Zarkon then summons his anti-voltron made from finally successful robeasts with living pilots. (it’s...a work in progress. as in, how does Sendak fit in, or prolly instead Sendak’s Clone, etc etc. But ultimately some of the previous antagonists return, after they got much more backstory etc in Campy TM stuff) (*cue mech battle*)

Allura finally has her match against Haggar and wins.

“There is honestly nothing good that will come from any projects I create with my specialty.”  Roy said.  “I've come to that conclusion long ago.  I'll do more good filtering what the government sees and receives from Eureka.”

“Like the flame-thrower gloves you keep in your desk?”

“Stop breaking into my office.”   Roy hissed as the bell dinged indicating they were on the next floor.   Ed snorted, as if it was his right.   Fine.  He'd put an end to that.  “I have sex with my wife on that desk.”

“What the fuck, Mustang?”

Roy smiled and stepped off the elevator and walked down the hall to Comanche's lab, room 047.   He unlocked the door and turned on the light.   Together he and Ed started turning on equipment and looking for what they needed.  “Comanche used his biological advancements in the field to get himself hired here, now he's focusing on environmental uses for his research.   I suspect he's doing that to not only gain favor within the community here, which is by nature rooted in finding cleaner and less invasive ways of doing things, but also to divert attention from what he may be doing with his original research.”

Ed was already diving into the files on the computer.    There was a lot of information here and it backed up Mustang's theory that Comanche was a really busy guy.   “Well that would explain how a dude his age can hop around on that peg leg like he's a ballerina.  He's using Chelation to clean his own  body of the wear and tear of aging.  I thought that was bullshit pseudo-science.”

“He's probably old enough to have called himself an alchemist.”  Roy replied and heard Ed chuckle.   “I'm sure he's hiding it all so he can diversifiy his retirement fund,  quite the windfall when he takes this to the private sector.   I don't feel bad at all for breaking in here to use it for my own personal reasons.”

“It's personal for all of us too.” Ed said.  “Hawkeye is the best thing to happen to this town in a long time.”

“I'm well aware that if our little feuds ever came to taking sides that this town would have all stood behind her.”  Roy said, thankful that those days were behind them but also with a touch of nostalgia for the rivalry they had started with.  She made him work to outmaneuver her and that was something he couldn't say of a lot of people.  

“Alright, I have something promising here.   Let me upload Al's data and see about making us something. Metallurgy is a specialty of mine I got this.”  Ed said and connected his tablet to the computer and started to work his magic.  

“How is your brother going to handle us targeting his nanites and neutralizing them with this? I'm basically having you classify them as a toxin to have them broken down and flushed down the drain.”  Roy asked.   He didn't want to mention the Ultimate Eye tech they had thrown into the tank that was going to be destroyed with them.     He'd figure out that later.

“Al's not selfish, he understands that the sacrifice is worth it.   It's a setback, but he's patient.” Ed said and kept typing.   Heavy metals and elements were a breeze for him, he barely needed to focus to re-calibrate the program.   “Besides I'm sure he's discussing a catheter and collection bag with Knox as we speak.   Nothing gets flushed down the drain.”

“Riza will be thrilled to hear he's called 'dibs' on her piss.   Life in Eureka never ceases to keep her guessing.”  Roy said and saw data being transferred to the machine he was staring at.  Ed was fast.    He looked at the time and realized it wasn't even midnight yet.  It felt like they had been here forever, that he'd lived a few lifetimes between carrying Riza into the infirmary around 1800 and now.   This was a glimpse of her job, what happened when he was away.   This was why she was so adamant of being read in on everything that had the potential to go to hell, because when it did it was a race to stop a catastrophe.   They played on a whole different playing field here, science without regard to established rules and so often bordering on playing God. When it went wrong, it went horribly wrong.  They had so much they still needed to talk about and he hoped he got the chance.

This AU is not to be confused with UnderDecay, and entirely different Alternate Universe. Also has elements similar to MafiaTale, but is again, an original AU. Message me with any content you want posted here and I'll post it!

The basic concept is DecayTale instead of the underground being flourishing with life, almost all of civilization has decayed, and the main characters are really all that's left of monster life.

There's sort of a sepia tone over all of the existing locations. The waterfall has dried out, the once vibrant town of Snowdin is now a ghost town with all of its buildings collapsed, with the exception of Sans and Papyrus's garage, where the brothers live.

There are very few living monsters in DecayTale. The Ruins are home to about half of life in the Underground. In this AU, Toriel and Asgore never separate, though Asriel does end up dying and becoming Flowey. The Underground is depopulated long before Asgore and Toriel are even born though, and as such, Flowey's ability to reset never let him go far enough back to when the Underground was full of life.

Gaster, father to Sans and Papyrus, remorsefully left his two sons to attempt to find a way to restore life to the underground. He met Alphys, who became his assistant. Together, the two of them managed to capture Flowey (unknown how and when this happened) and extract his ability to reset. Gaster then attempted to reset the world, but instead disappeared (becoming Grillby, more below,) leaving a battered, bitter Flowey in the hands of a morally distraught and borderline suicidal Alphys. Alphys released Flowey, and apologized for everything they did to him.

After losing the ability to reset, Flowey determines that the best way to survive in the desolate, deserted underground is to make himself useful to Muffet, who leads (and extorts) the largest population of surviving monsters. Her spiders act as henchmen to her "mob boss" operation. In the Hotlands/Lab area, the remaining monsters all pay tribute to Muffet and her Spider Mob. She serves as one of the universe's primary antagonists.

Meanwhile, having only each other for company, Sans and Papyrus grew up making puzzles all throughout their deserted, snowy homeland for each other to complete. One day, on the edge of death from malnourishment (or freezing or something?), Sans and Papyrus lay alone in their garage. Feeling as though they could barely move, they resigned that it was simply their time to die.

However, the faint yellow fire in the middle of their garage seemed to somehow sense this and came to life as Grillby, who magically provided them with food and warmth, and began fixing up their garage into a warm home, instead of the beat up shack it had been their entire life. Grillby now serves as a father/butler figure for the two skeletons, and enjoys hearing of the puzzles the two make for each other. Grillby is happy and content staying home and being a busibody in their house.

Grillby has Gaster's soul, and is a manifestation of Gaster resetting himself to be a father figure who can be content with just being a father, not a savior for monsterkind.

Alphys, on the brink of throwing herself off of the dried up waterfall, meets a hermit by the name of Undyne. After escaping Muffet's rule Undyne is fueled by one thing; her undying hatred for Muffet and her Mob. She brings Alphys to live with her and her only friend Gerson, who live in a sparkly cavern and eat luminescent plants to survive. Alphys slowly falls in love with Undyne, and Gerson performs a barely-coherent wedding for the two of them, where he pronounces them "she and shell," whatever that means.

Refilled with a will to live, Alphys creates two small robot children for her and Undyne, Nabstablook and Mettaton, who have interests in music and theatrics respectively, and actually gain monster souls. They adore putting on shows for "grandpa Gerson."

When Frisk falls into the Underground, they are greeted by Flowey, who tries to shake them down for resources for Muffet. Toriel intervenes however, making it clear that none of Muffet's gang is welcome in the "ruins" (though everything is ruins in this AU.)

She brings Frisk through the traps set to deter the mob, and brings them to the house where the refugees live. Asgore and Toriel are the couple that all of the monster refugees look to for protection. Asgore and Toriel are not technically "King and Queen," but are leaders in this capacity.

When Frisk wants to go confront Muffet and Flowey, the pair of goat parents try to dissuade Frisk, but to no avail.

Needless to say, starved for socialization, Sans and Papyrus are elated to show someone new their puzzles.

At this point, the story diverges into the three timelines: Genocide, Neutral, and Pacifist.

Pacifist Route

This route sees the player pass all of Sans and Papyrus's puzzles, and actually help the brothers set up a puzzle for Grillby. They then convince Grillby to come join them for a puzzle, for the first time. He does, and truly enjoyed it.

Both of the brothers will try to stop Frisk from leaving, however, feeling that they are like a trio of siblings. Grillby hears the fighting after a while, and convinces them to let Frisk go.

Upon arrival in waterfall, Frisk meets Monster Kid, who is there searching for the elusive "hermit people" rumored in the big city. Undyne tries to attack and kill Frisk, mistakenly thinking them a threat to her family, but eventually comes around.

Monster Kid ends up joining the family, and Mettaton, Nabstablook, and Alphys take Frisk to train them for a confrontation with Muffet. Nabstablook buffs Mettaton with his music, and Frisk has a massive dance off with the two young robots, ending in Monster Kid revealing that he can spin on his head and breakdance.

Upon proceeding to the hotlands, Frisk has many encounters with spider goons. When they get to the hall of Judgement, Flowey is there as a flower to fight. He uses vine attacks and pellet attacks, and gets faster and faster the more frustrated he gets, but ultimately is resigned. "You want to meet Muffet? Your funeral!"

The Muffet battle is an amped up version of the original, but through talking with Muffet, she eventually can be convinced that what she is doing is wrong, even if she started with the intention to unite the remaining few monsters together. Muffet tells Frisk that she's captured six human SOULs discreetly with the power she's amassed, and wants to break the barrier for the monsters to be free and repopulate the earth.

At the barrier, Grillby and Alphys appear. Grillby reveals that the skeleton brothers wanted to follow Frisk, and when they got to Waterfall, Alphys astonishingly recognized Grillby. They think that they can use Grillby's SOUL to both break the barrier and restore Gaster to life. She's prepared a robot that she's 99.99999% certain will be able to manifest a unique SOUL for Grillby.

Everything goes to plan, Grillby inhabits a robot suit, Gaster is restored, the barrier is broken, everyone is freed, monsters repopulate the earth, and peace and harmony are restored!

Neutral Route

Little about this route differs from the Pacifist Route, up until hotlands. Grillby, regardless of whether or not the skeleton brothers are alive, will follow you to the entrance of the Hotlands, and give you warning depending on how many monsters Frisk has killed. He says he doesn't know what LV is, but he knows it's bad, and can sense it inside of you.

Things proceed as normal, with Flowey and Muffet fighting/talking with you. In the barrier room, however, Grillby approaches you alone, saying that you will not be able to get back if you don't have a monster soul. He doesn't want you to go, either because the skeletons love you and want you here, or because you killed them and deserve to die (and he knows you can Save, so he doesn't hold back.)

Either way, Frisk can get his soul to flee the Underground.

Genocide

When you try to kill Papyrus and Sans, Grillby will step in the way and die. This enrages Sans and Papyrus, and an extended battle with the two of them will commence.

If you manage to kill them, proceeding into Waterfall will greet you with an Undyne the Undying fight upon trying to kill Monster Kid.

Trying to Kill Gerson and Alphys will result in Nabstablook and Mettaton fights respectively.

The game proceed like a Pacifist Route until the barrier, where Gaster confronts you, explaining that his soul returned him to existence when Grillby died. This is the final boss of this run. Upon the second of his death Gaster raises a white hand out of nowhere and hits the reset button, restarting DecayTale to the very beginning, where Frisk has just fallen down.

A/N: This is an AU based on the truly incredible audio drama The Strange Case of Starship Iris. I tried to make it as accessible to non-listeners as I could, but all you really need to know is: it's in space, the humans got into a war with an alien species called the Dwarnians, and the reigning human republic isn't terribly nice.

There are a lot of ways to die in space. Tech knows this. He spent a lot of time reading about them, when he first got assigned to Starship Iris. You can die from depressurization, or explosions, or other people shooting at you. You can die in the human-Dwarnian war, which is less likely now that the war is over and the Republic has been established, but you can never say never.

And, it turns out, you can die if you run out of fuel.

He flips the switch one more time, hoping for anyone, anything, who can pick up his distress signal. “Mayday, mayday, this is Officer Purpler on the Starship Iris, ID 27-Tango-53-08-Whiskey, mission priority 6, requesting immediate assistance. We had a catastrophic shuttle failure, I am the only survivor, requesting extraction.”

He swallows hard. Only survivor. He hadn’t really realized it until now, but he’s the only one left on this ship. Fuck. Fuck, fuck. “Requesting-” he coughs, and it hurts his throat, which is raw with all of the tears that he’s trying not to cry. He checked the fuel reserves already. They’re low. Dangerously low. And the only person answering him is the robot assistant that runs the ship’s internal functions, which is a pretty bad sign.

“Don’t panic,” he whispers. He thinks about his nana, about how she’s still back on Earth, unless something happened, which is a real and horrible possibility, but it’s not one that he really has the time to think about in depth. “Don’t panic, don’t panic, don’t panic, just run the transmission again-”

He’s run the transmission six times now. The seventh takes up fuel that would be going to keeping the ship habitable. But there’s not a lot of point in keeping the environmental systems online if nobody is coming to rescue him.

Tech takes a deep breath. “One more time,” he says. He doesn’t know a lot about the ship’s frequencies, or how any of that works, but he’s been flipping from the backup frequencies to the main channels and back. Maybe that’ll help. Maybe it’s just sapping out energy that he could be using to make the transmissions. “One more time. Mayday, mayday, this is-”

“Connection lost,” says the gratuitously pleasant AI voice.

Tech feels himself paling. “No, no, no-” he flips a couple of switches. He can’t lose a connection. Not when nobody connected with him in the goddamn first place. “No, come on, mayday, this is- fuck, this is Starship Iris, requesting- requesting immediate- fuck -”

“If you would like to make a call-”

“I’m trying to make a call!” Tech shouts, because there’s nobody left to hear him scream and that makes it easier to be as loud as he wants. “I’m trying, but the fucking Republic shot me into space without really training me first, and now I’m on a starship floating to my certain death, and I’m going to die alone in the far reaches of outer fucking space! So if you could do me a favor and just let me make one goddamn phone call -”

“Hey,” a voice says, sounding alarmed. More alarmed than the AI is capable of. “Hey, you’re connected, dude, calm down.”

Tech stumbles away from the communications panel instinctively. This can’t be real. “I’m connected?”

“Yeah, you’ve reached the crew of the Xanadu.”

“The… Xanadu? As in the smuggling ship?”

“Well,” the guy says, sounding uncomfortable. “We do other stuff too. But your frequency is coming through loud and clear, what’s going on?”

Tech runs through the mental math. The Xanadu is the closest thing they have to space pirates - not as bad as some of the jackasses out in deep space, but still a bunch of dangerous people. There’s no telling what they want with a Republic ship, or a Republic officer. But he’s going to die if he doesn’t get off the Iris.

“This is Officer Purpler from the Starship Iris.” He pauses. If he’s going to die, he’s not super interested in introducing himself like a Republic monkey. “My friends call me Tech Wizard. Or Tech.”

“You good with computers?”

“No, I’m just the only one who knows how to make the coffee maker work.”

The guy laughs at that, startled. “Well, hey, Tech. My name’s Z, and I am actually pretty good with computers. What’s your situation?”

“My whole crew went out to planet 7293 for a scouting mission.” He swallows. “Their, uh, their shuttle exploded just before docking back on the Iris. So my systems are pretty damaged. And I’m the only survivor.”

“Shit,” Z says. “I’m sorry.”

“Yeah.” Tech sits on the floor - well, doesn’t sit so much as his knees give out and his whole body weight goes crashing down to the floor. He’s so tired, all of a sudden. Maybe there’s something about - about oxygen levels and blood and stress. Some logical explanation. Mostly, he thinks he’s just fucking tired. “You’re the only one who’s answering any of my distress calls.”

“Desperate enough to trust a pirate, Officer Purpler?”

“Look, man, I just don’t wanna die alone.”

Z goes quiet at that. “Who says that dying is your only option?”

Tech lets out a laugh. It’s a little miserable and a little hollow, but who can fucking blame him? “You got something else in mind?”

“Actually,” Z says slowly, “I might.”

2.

On the record, according to every doctor who has ever seen him, Squirt Purpler is a human man. A human man who has to see specific doctors because of a diagnosis he received as a child, but still just a regular guy. He passed all the space physicals. He’s fit for duty. He’s just a normal guy, with a very specialized health condition.

The thing that people don’t know is what, exactly, dermocrinal phagiosis is.

It’s a code, one that Tech learned when he was about five years old. It is a way of saying that wherever you go, you need to look for people who will help you. You need to find a specific doctor. It is a way of saying that one of his parents was a Dwarnian, and specialists who treat dermocrinal phagiosis are really just people who won’t kill him for being a freak of nature.

Even in the Republic, there are a couple of specialists who know about half-Dwarnians like him. They found people who could do his physicals without announcing to the world that he’s actually half-alien, who would keep him safe. He’s one of the lucky ones: he looks mostly human, except for the blotches of shiny purple skin up and down his torso, his back, his arms. He can wear long sleeves and be pretty safe. He can keep himself safe.

(Tech was four years old when his parents died. Not in the war, long before the war, but because people thought… well, thought that it was unnatural. Tech’s lucky that he made it out of that alive. Tech’s lucky that his grandmother taught him to keep quiet about his “diagnosis.” Tech’s lucky for a lot of reasons.)

3.

He doesn’t think to be afraid about what type of people the Xanadu crew are until he’s hurtling through space towards them in a jury-rigged cryogenic freezer. He doesn’t wonder if they’re dangerous until he realizes, through all of Z’s advice and jokes, he hasn’t actually said anything about himself. He doesn’t wonder if they’re going to kill him until it’s too late to turn back.

Besides, he figures as his eyes slip shut, if they kill him, at least that means he survived a little while longer than anyone expected.

4.

There’s a woman bent over him when he wakes up.

“Hi,” Tech says, even though he feels like there’s cotton in his mouth, ears, and brain. His nana would kill him if he weren’t polite.

“Hello,” the woman answers solemnly. She’s very short, but her hair is long enough that it’s swinging in Tech’s face. “My name is Pox. Zenith says that you came from a Republic starship.”

“Mhm.”

“He also said you’re probably cold.”

“Mhm,” Tech says. His best shot, as Z had explained it, was to repurpose one of the freezers that they use for biological samples to put himself into something simulating cryo-sleep. He’d used that as an escape pod and jettisoned out, and then hoped that the math was right and his trajectory would match the Xanadu’s. It looks like it had, more or less, if he’s here. “‘M Tech.”

“He mentioned that too.” Pox reaches behind her and comes up with a massive fleece blanket, ridiculously fluffy and huge, to put over him. “You’re going to have a rough couple of days, I’m afraid. We’ve hooked you up with our medical center as best we could, but-”

“But y’r pir’tes,” Tech slurs out. Talking is hard. Side effects of bad cryo-sleep, probably.

Pox smiles, looking a little sad. “But we’re pirates,” she agrees. “Pirates who saved you, but we don’t have the best resources.”

“Thank you,” Tech says. He’s already falling back asleep, even though he has more questions, even though he just spent a few days literally frozen in space. God, he survived being frozen in space. That’ll be something to put on his resume.

Pox smooths his hair back out of his face, and for a weird, vivid second, Tech feels like crying. “You’re welcome,” she says. She starts to say something else, but Tech is mostly asleep, so he doesn’t really bother listening.

5.

The next few times he wakes up are pretty similar. He meets Z, briefly, and Pox tells him a little bit about what the Xanadu does. Tech spends a lot of time sleeping, which both Pox and Z assure him is perfectly normal.

The fifth time he wakes up, he meets the ship’s captain, just for a second. Captain Rambo, he says, but as soon as Tech tries to call him that he says, “Just call me Dak.”

“Dak,” Tech repeats. “Captain Dak?”

Dak screws his whole face up in disgust. “What kinda outfit is the regime running these days? Just Dak, unless you’re mad at me, and then you can do what Max does and call me Captain Rambo.”

“Max,” Tech repeats. “I haven’t met Max.”

Dak’s face shutters off in an instant. “That-”

“He should,” Pox says suddenly.

Dak gives her a wary look. It’s strange to see on him; Tech gets the impression that he’s not wary very often. “You sure that’s a good idea?”

“I’ve done medical examinations on him,” Pox says, and Tech’s heart stops. Shit. Shit. “He’s got, ah- what’s the official term? Dermo… demo… demolition…”

“Dermocrinal phagiosis,” Tech says, over the sound of his heart pounding. “And it’s a pretty serious condition, so-”

Pox frowns. “Are you sure it’s not demolition derby?”

“Pox,” Dak says patiently. “Demolition derby is that thing Lil Marco hosts that we try and fuck up when we’re not busy. Dermocrinal phagiosis is that thing Max talks about.”

“Are you sure?”

“You think I don’t listen to my sister’s kid?”

“Who’s Max?” Tech says, but he’s already fading back into sleep, he can feel it. “It- is Max- does Max have-”

“Shhhh.” Pox reaches out and grabs his hand, and Dak immediately grabs both of their joined hands. It’s kind of nice, actually. “We’ll talk about it later. Your body needs rest.”

“M’brain’s tired of resting,” Tech murmurs.

Dak squeezes their joined hands. “Don’t worry about it, the bed’s all yours.”

Tech tries to smile back, but he can’t quite make the muscles work right. He ends up falling back asleep like that.

6.

The sixth time Tech wakes up, there’s a Dwarnian there.

He blinks a few times, but it doesn’t get any less clear. There’s a Dwarnian talking to Z, their heads bent towards each other. Except - Tech blinks again, just to be sure - this isn’t a normal Dwarnian. He hasn’t seen that many - he’s only seen his mom in pictures, and only met a few in person - but this one doesn’t look right. The purple of their skin is a little subdued, and their hair looks like human hair, not the weird fuzz that Dwarnians have. And they’re too short.

“Tech,” Pox says loudly. Loudly enough that Tech jumps, because he hadn’t realized she was in the room. But she’s perched on the other side of his bed, watching him. When he looks at her, she gives him an extremely significant look. “This is Max. Our navigator.”

Tech turns back to Max and Z. Z looks wary, but Max… doesn’t. Max is watching Tech with a level of careful scrutiny.

“Hi,” Tech says. “I, uh, I used to work for the Republic.”

“Yeah,” Max says. “I’ve heard.”

Tech nods. “I don’t think I want to anymore.”

“We haven’t even talked to you about this yet!” Pox’s hand settles on his shoulder. “Z, look, we converted him already!”

“Pox,” Z says. “He-”

“It’s okay,” Tech says. He can’t look away from Max. There aren’t enough human-Dwarnian babies for there to be an extensive body of research - and Tech has looked, pretty desperately, for that research - but there’s enough that he knows that there’s a lot of variation in phenotypes. He’s one of the luckier ones, maybe: he looks like he’s human. Max looks more like a Dwarnian, sure, but only to someone who’s never actually seen a Dwarnian before. And Max is looking at Tech like he understands. “I know we haven’t talked about it. But I’m tired of being somewhere that- that-”

“That’d take you and not me,” Max says, with a stunning amount of understanding. He sounds younger than Tech expected. “I get that.”

“Cool,” Tech says. “I think I’m going to pass out now. Nothing personal, it’s just-”

Pox claps a hand over his mouth. “Sleep,” she says, not like a threat. Like she’s worried.

Tech closes his eyes and lets himself sleep.

MGS “Zombie Apocalypse AU

Under a cut in case you’re tired of zombie stories, haha.

Zombie outbreak is running rampant. Hal is a scientist working in a government t lab that is teetering on the edge of just nuking the infected areas, but he doesn't want that to happen. His team gets word that they might have located someone with antibodies, a kid somewhere in Russia, but she's being held in a well guarded facility because some shadowy organization thinks they can extract a large amount of money for her custody, and unfortunately the US govt is unwilling to blow valuable resources on a long shot. But after Hal pleads with the higher ups, they give him a chance sort of. Snake is assigned to him with instructions to undertake a one man infiltration mission to retrieve the child. Hal insists on going along as both mission control and tech support as well as an expert in zombie contamination control.

What they find is grim, the facility is more than it seems, with a number of test subjects held inside, most infected. Snake manages to find the girl and breaks her out of her cell, but alarms begin sounding, which is odd because he knows he didn't trip anything, but then he sees a shadow running by, the test subjects have escaped? Getting the girl out of there is now his top priority, sneaking be damned. He makes it to the helicopter and the three of them escape just in time to see a missile strike destroy the entire complex. Snake informs Hal that the planes firing them were some of theirs.

"What the hell happened there?" Hal asks, confused but trying not to let the fear take him over, the tiny girl is afraid enough for all of them. They manage to land at a remote research facility, basically abandoned. Hal doesn't trust his own government at the moment. But he has enough knowledge and equipment to run preliminary tests.

Sunny seems understandably attached to Dave who reassured her that Hal is "a good guy" who doesn't want to hurt her, he just wants to see if she can help him help other people, and Sunny agrees. While Hal works, from the samples she gives him, Snake and Sunny clean up the facility as best they can, looking for supplies and tools they might use. The facility was meant to house a lot of scientists way out here in Alaska so there's actually quite a bit.

Sunny becomes quite adept at making instant noodles and scrambled powdered eggs. Snake keeps the coffee coming and reminds Hal to take a break and get some sleep once in awhile. Even though there's enough rooms for them all to have their own separate quarters they bunk in the same room, Snake and Sunny sharing a bunk while Hal struggles to sleep on his. One night, Snake's hand drops down and hangs in front of Hal's face and it takes him a while to realize it's no mere accident, Snake- Dave, rather, is offering his hand. Hal grips it silently and holds onto it for a while, until he falls asleep.

Eventually Hal has some results. The antibodies in Sunny's blood failed at reverting infected samples to normal, but when introduced to a clean sample, the tissue was resistant to infection. A vaccine, not a cure, potentially anyway.

So that's the good news, but Hal doesn't seem as excited as Snake. He explains a vaccine is much harder to test. If a cure fails to work, then there is no real loss, the infected subject just stays infected. But the only way to test a vaccine is to induce the infection into the test subject. If it doesn't work…

But Hal gives him a brave, yet sad smile and says that he has to see it through and Snake realizes he intends to test it out on himself. He immediately stops him, saying it's too great of a risk. Hal is stunned, he doesn't know what else to do, but Snake takes his hand once more and tells him he wants Hal to test it on him, because he trusts him and if things go wrong the world is going to need his brain a lot more than another killer. The world is full of those now, isn't it? Hal doesn't know what to do, what about Sunny? But Snake says Hal is going to be the one to save the world, what's one more kid on top of that? Eventually, Hal agrees. Dave explains to Sunny what has to happen and she is of course upset but he tells her "You've done your part to help save the world, now let me do mine, okay Sunshine?" She gives him the biggest hug her little arms can manage.

Of course it's so scary and Hal holds Dave's hand the whole time (he's restrained of course, it's secure but uncomfortable and the straps chafe a bit and the injections sting). Sunny insisted on staying but she falls asleep leaving the two of them alone. Dave struggles to keep his wits about him, doesn't want to fall asleep because he's afraid, really afraid it won't be him that wakes up. Hal sits up with him and just, talks. About his time as a researcher, his colleagues, most of them dead now. Even about his childhood and family, his sister, his father, who escaped the world long before all of this. Dave is breathing hard but he manages a few words anyway, assures Hal he's done the best he could and that no matter what happens here, he still believes in him.

Hal sits up through the night, it's not his first all nighter by a long shot. He takes samples of Dave's blood periodically apologizing each time, though Dave just grunts in response. Twelve hours pass, twenty four. Forty-eight.

No sign of infection. Hal and Dave are cautiously optimistic, and Dave is taken out of the restraints, but confined to room with rations etc for further observation. He feels okay sleeping at last, but when he wakes Hal is always there speaking to him through the comm link on the other side of the glass. Sunny even takes a few shifts, reading to him out of books from the site's library, although they're all mostly technical resources.

Two weeks pass. Dave still tests clean. It worked? Sunny hugs him again so tight when he's finally out and Hal is just standing awkwardly a little ways away until Dave stands and goes to him and pulls him close with one arm. "You did good."

The next step is of course synthesizing more of the vaccine, but that becomes tricky and needs to be handled on a large scale. That’s more than they can do, so they’re going to have to go back to the govt with their findings. Or at least, Hal will. He doesn’t trust that they’ll treat Sunny well or even let Dave live when they learn he’s technically been introduced to the infectious strains.

Hal has to go back alone, but they work out some means of reconnecting, with Sunny’s help probably. Dave says he can take care of Sunny, even if they have to live off the land for a while, he knows Hal will find them when it’s time. So they part ways and Hal returns with vaccine in hand.

SOMETHING SOMETHING Sunny contacts him first. Something she was reading in all those books clicked with her memories of the compound where they found her. It doesn’t add up, or it does but not in a good way. The virus was man-made? Something something creating a worldwide epidemic so that the shadow govt could better control the population since it would control the administration of the only vaccine. Hal realizes he’s not actually safe and his work isn’t in good hands and he tries to escape back to Sunny and Snake because obviously he’s played right into their hands.

Maybe Snake shows up just in time to bust him out and they get the fuck out of there, back out into the mountains. Hal doesn’t have his facilities but he does have Sunny and the books she managed to collect, and a very limited list of contacts of people he thinks he can trust. Let’s get Emma in here because that seems like a good idea. Maybe she was with Hal in the last lab and escape with him, that sounds good. XD

So together they work on a new version of the vaccine, with Emma’s help they’re able to create and airborne version, one that can reach huge chunks of the population at a time, they just need to figure out a way to hit the most dense population centers to spread the vaccine the most effectively.

METAL GEAR.

They gain access to this missile shooting walking robot but load it up with their new version of the vaccine and indeed launch it at massive population centers. According to Sunny and Emma’s calculations, it should reach the worldwide population in three months, it would have been faster but most transportation has been slowed or halted since the outbreak.

So they’re there. Out in the mountains. Waiting.

And sometimes they hold hands.
