FSGE SPOILERS once again

So, did we ever figure out why Rafal needed to note the wind's schedule to himself or can I headcanon that it's because he still can't get used to flying since the duology?

Because if I can, I am going to cry my eyes out because of that fact.

It's actually so crazy to re-read the earlier books after you've read the duology. Like, the whole idea that this person is Rhian Fucking Mistral is blowing my mind. The foreshadowing of it all does. I started reading the duology not so long ago, so I already forgot how Rafal acted in the third book, hence why I didn't realize what was wrong with Rafal in the duology. Now, re-reading it, it just all makes much more sense. Like, oh my gosh, I wonder why is this calm, strict and straightforward guy turned into a sassy, cringey teenager who acts like a classical vilain.

And now, knowing about all the history behind the school? It's even more crazier. "The Old School", buddy, you've built it yourself.

why i don't like the netflix adaption of sge

i've watched the movie this weekend, and i have some thoughts to share:

the people in the village actually know about the school and the fairy tales. it's important because in the books it is one of the things that characterizes sophie the way she is. most kids have developed a fear of being selected for the school for good and evil, while sophie is anticipated to be kidnapped by the school master. she even bakes goods for him, feigns "good" demeanor, and discards all the protective mechanisms her father had constructed to keep her safe.

her father and to-be stepmother are portrayed inaccurately as well. they are simple, sane people. in the books, they never treat sophie really horrible. perhaps her father wanted a son instead of a daughter (we don't really find out if that is true or a part of sophie's broken worldview), but he still cares for her—he provides her with enough resources to do her strange make up routine every morning, he eats her gruesome food (yes, he complains, but not with an abusive tone at all, he just sounds tired of having to consume the vegan food he clearly hates), and he tries to prevent her from getting captured. and her stepmother is also a vaguely decent human being, and not a merciless, evil person.

the way sophie talks to people is very different. in the books, everything she did was to make her appear more "good", so she'd be taken to the school for good. she never actually had any motivation apart from her own wants. most people who watched the movie love sophie, but not because they think she is evil, but because they think that she is simply misunderstood. and in the book it's made extremely clear how false this is. sophie is jealous, cheats, manipulates, lies, finds joy in hurting others, kills, judges easily, only cares for her looks, feels no empathy or guilt, and rejects people who are trying to help her. and she doesn't do it because she is misunderstood and wants to find revenge/was taught to be that way/lived through a traumatic event. honestly, i find her pretty scary. book sophie would've killed movie sophie instantly.

agatha is also a point for me. first of all, her looks. and i'm not talking about the race of the actress (acting skills are what matters and she is a good actress), but about the way how they depicted her. agatha was supposed to look "hideous"—oily hair, watery eyes, grim face. people literally flinched before her in the books because of the way she looked (and treated herself accordingly.) but her movie version looks so pretty, and i mean that not in the objective way, but in the way that they didn't include the things that made her appear ugly in the books. they never let her grow and find out that she was always pretty, but nobody recognized it because she couldn't embrace her beauty. also, the thing about her being good is a thing. in the books we are thaught that regardless of her gruff, quiet, lonesome, and sorrowful personality, agatha still can be a good person. but in the movie she's just your average, nice teenage girl. there is no character depth. where is the mean, broken girl who seemed to hated everything, yet wanted to be good? where is the girl that wouldn't give up on sophie? where is the girl that always prioritized others? well, we never really got to see her in the movie.

agatha and tedros' relationship is an insta-love story instead of a slow burn. remember, in the books he hated her at first and literally wanted to kill her until like over 300 pages into the book. just saying. and in the movie, they are all nice to each other, like no? sophie was the one tedros had a crush on at first because he though that she was his would-be princess. (there was also no character depth on his side. he never overcomes his prejudices.)

they revealed stuff way too early and made the two female teachers enemies instead of friends. (also, why is jesper playing the evil gremlin?) that disappointed me because i loved their dynamic in the books.

all the little yet extremely important things were missing... the lessons yuba, professor sader's whole existence, the test about "being good" that agatha aces, so many scenes with the never girls, the ever girls being more evil than some nevers, all the lore.

it was not a bad movie (it's okay, i guess?), but it's a horryfing adaptation of the books.

Rafal: I love power vacuums—I could put my feet up and watch them go aimlessly all day, then swoop in, take over, and get the job done.

Rhian: I didn't think you valued cleaning supplies that much, considering the state of Evil's halls.

Rafal: Bah! Not that kind, you fool. [He looks back at his magical projection and leans in with widening eyes, grinning far too much.]

Rhian: Well, excuse me for thinking you had any kind of vested interest in your and your students' health and safety.

Rafal: [enthralled by the screen and not hearing one word.] Not now. Tell it to me later. Also, quick: fetch me a snack. There are no commercial breaks via Spellcast and the king of Akgul's about to be beheaded by some other crazed ninny jockeying for power. And I already bet heads would roll! The die are cast! Place your bets now, brother, if you want to cash in.

Rhian: [sighs and mutters to himself under his breath:] It's all "airtight alibis" and "motives" and "which warlord will die next" with you—why can't you just watch recreational jousts like a normal person?

Since we were talking about how easily Rafal would burn in the sun, I decided to draw a little scenario where Rhian tries to convince him to step foot into the light, and he gets crisped.

Okay, so hi, hi, hello. I got inspired with a photography channel on youtube who does ballet shorts, and while I'm still working on making Rhian as dragon-y as possible without making him an actual dragon, I've managed to put thoughts into words for a thing I've thought of for a while. So.

We're starting off Rafal-centric for once. Wow. Amazing. I can do things for characters that aren't Rhian and it's weird. But Rhian is here as an antagonist(?) maybe? Idk. Anyway. Rafal and Rhian were in ballet and then Rafal got injured somehow in a way that might have been Rhian's fault. Rafal retired because he had to, but still teaches. I am putting Rophie into this, yes, thank you for asking.

Rhian is out doing his thing. Rafal is teaching. I'm giving him a leg brace. Why? I don't know. I'd have to figure out what got injured and how, and I'm not doing that right now. I'm also giving him a cane that he only sometimes uses, and probably not as often as he should. Maybe he broke something? (Kaz Brekker is this you?) I don't know.

I'm leaning toward (a.k.a. the only idea I have) Rophie meeting in a lesson, but that brings up an age gap thing perhaps that I'm not sure that I want to touch. Immortal sorerer is one thing; modern life is an entirely different thing. But maybe also he's just her new trainer who is too young to be retired, (Ballet dancers retire in their mid to late 30s apparently) and is therefore mysterious. Then again, he might be famous so less mysterious and more handsome but grumpy. Agatha is vv suspicious of him. Fair, to be honest.

In case anyone was wondering about Rhian: he's just out there doing his dancing thing. Being celebrated by the media for being famous and openly gay (that's a thing that happens right? I think I've seen it happen.) while also framing whatever happened to Rafal as an accident that was totally not his fault.

And... I think that's all I've got for now. I know almost nothing of ballet, and this is mostly unresearched, so it's just plot bones. But plot bones are better than nothing.

SGE prequel duology

SPOILER WARNING

So I just finished the prequel duology and can we take the moment to appreciate the absolutely masterful foreshadowing of the ending of The Rise & Fall of SGE? Like when i started reading it, I found a bunch of weird inconsistencies that I just brushed off as mistakes of the author, nobody cares about the eye color of the characters after all, right? RIGHT? Then as more things were hinted, throughout the entire duration of the book it led to me slowly realizing and not wanting to acknowledge the fact that Rafal is going to end up dead.

I remember staring at the covers like:

"Why don't their eye colors on the two covers match???"

"Wait, I was 100% sure that Rafal's eyes were icy blue???"

(reaching for vol 3 of the main series) "Yeah he for sure had blue eyes here, but also looking at Rafal from the Rise of sge and this guy... this guy is NOT Rafal."

all of that brushed off as just lack of attention to detail or character's personality differing from book to book because of the gap in time between writing them (looking at you, Shane from Spirit Animals)

"wait... his eyes are consistently green here."

"hold on, its Rhian who can't sleep well??"

"Wow, Rafal believes he is Good now, I'm so excited to see what makes him turn Evil again!"

" :O... Unless... "

Edit: ALSO the fact that i remember looking at the pictures in book 1 (right after starting it) and thinking to myself "Wow... Rhian looks sort of antagonistic here? I wonder why they drew the Good brother with such sharp hair and facial expression" and similarly "Wait, this Rafal is not looking like I imagined. why is his face so round? He almost looks... Good here. I wonder why?"

I really want to yap about Vulcan and Rhian, but the sad truth is, I quite literally have no idea what to say. So, to fill the empty hole in my heart, I’ve just been imagining them as a couple.

A dysfunctional couple, mind you. I’ve been thinking about all the typical things couples do—all the activities, fun stuff, and so on—but with their dynamic, everything turns kind of toxic. Just imagining the simplest things, like them going on a picnic or having an outdoor date, Vulcan taking Rhian to Netherwood, and it always somehow ending with Rhian trying to justify Vulcan’s behavior again... Rhian reflecting on their toxic love... The idea that *anything* they do will always end with Rhian crying in his bed is just so funny to me.

And the worst part is that he can’t even fully acknowledge how bad it is. Rhian will always find some excuse for Vulcan’s toxicity—because, in his mind, their relationship *can’t* be that bad! They just had a beautiful date, and Rhian really liked the way Vulcan played with his curls, so clearly the pros outweigh the cons! Sure, he cried his eyes out afterward, but that’s fine. They should definitely do it all over again, and Rhian should absolutely never break up with Vulcan.

What do u think of the prequels' characters fashion sense in modern context

Rhian would enjoy wearing makeup, at least like eyeliner or something! He'd also be in debt for always getting designer brands. I think he would like most trends unless they are really flashy or tacky. I can see Rhian wearing some jewelry-- earrings definitely. Rhian would enjoy his natural curls, but maybe dye it from time to time. And Rhian would invest in expensive cologne and always wear it on him. Rhian at work or in public would be the type constantly applying touch ups, reapplying cologne, combing his hair, etc. Thrift stores are no nos for him-- new only!!! (Waste of money but okayyy) but then he'd also buy from Temu or Ali Express 🤔 Ah and his makeup is never drugstore. It's brand name makeup by celebrities or Clinque or something far from cheap.

Rafal would mostly use baggy clothing/hoodies and sweatpants and dark colors at that. Mostly black. He'd wear the same shirts (meaning, same kind but different actual shirts. Not that he doesn't change at all because I do think (or hope) he does practice hygiene.) I can see him have a helix piercing and wear a bunch of rings, and maybe one necklace that doesn't stand out too much. Rafal looks like the type to always cut his hair so it doesn't get too long-- one, because maybe he thinks he looks unpresentable and two, because I think Rhian would attack him for not maintaining himself enough. I think Rafal would have small tattoos you can barely see or are hidden by clothing, but never sleeves of them. And I think they'd be simple, symbolic things. Also, I can picture Rafal trying to dress like an edgy bad boy and get the leather jacket thing, though he wouldn't look bad with it. He *sometimes* wears some fragrance, but it isn't as strong as Rhian's. He also goes to thrift stores and finds nice things.

James: He'd be super fancy, but also have loads of tattoos. I think he'd wear his hair long and many times try to go in a tank top or something. As long as it isn't an important meeting. James would also be big on name brands but actually not be affected too much financially by it. And he isn't so quick to jump on trends, especially if they are too tacky and humiliating for him. He may also like some jewelry in order to show off his wealth and status. Also, I think sometimes James tries too hard to fit into "old money" type aesthetics and be too snobbish. He would constantly have dress shoes, or boots. He thinks sneakers are beneath him. He would also like leather, mostly for cost and fake leather is a disgrace. He can sense a knock off of a name brand from a mile away.

Aladdin. Nothing much. I think he'd be those kids that try so so so hard to act gangster. Or, unless he's with Kyma, he's sloppy and always messing up his outfits.

Kyma: Presentable, modest (meaning not too attention grabbing or over the top), and I can see her wearing pearls! She'd carry nice handbags. She wouldn't be ashamed of hand me downs or thrifting, as long as it's something wearable and lovely. Her emphasis is more on cleanliness and keeping her hair neat. She'd use natural makeup looks more often. Sometimes she wears heels, sometimes, clean sneakers or flats. She doesn't follow trends or believe in shiny and new in the fashion world.

Midas: I feel like he has perfect hair everyone envies. It's perfect curls and a lovely color. He prefers wearing gold to silver. I don't think Midas would like trends too much-- or care. Especially if something is too attention catching or tight and suffocating. He'd have earrings that are small and not too noticeable. I think Midas would go for classy or "professional" vibe. He'd like golden or darker colors, though maybe with some shades or red, he wouldn't look bad. Midas would be the kind who would ALWAYS have killer shoes. (Canonically, he wanted to pick pocket to buy boots.) They would be like Clark's or something. Rocker bottoms. Name brand sneakers. And well, nice boots.

Rhian: [shakes his head] Children these days don't know their interdictions. Even I have to agree with Rafal today since I forbid my Evers from taking any food they're offered.

Rafal: [side-eyes Rhian.]

Rhian: [peremptorily] Vulcan was one exception. Just let me live it down, will you?

Rafal: [shrugs wryly] I just find it funny that Good's Master succumbed to standard, fairy-tale fare. Precautions really have degraded over time. Just look at the "exemplar" with us.

Rhian: I hardly think I—

Rafal: What happened to the old, reliable "shut up and obey" the old crone or shriveled goblin if you don't want to end up dead in a ditch? Do Evers no longer learn the alphabet as well? And "don't invite strangers in" only applies if you recognize the stranger could bring harm. You only have to offer hospitality to the ones who seem ambiguous, so fate doesn't punish you for being stingy. It's binary like the rest of the Woods. How hard is that?
