Members of the puppet government which Russia set up in the occupied city of Tokmak are apparently leaving as the Ukrainian military advanced to within 20 km of town.
That’s according to the information of locals reported by Ivan Fedorov, the mayor of Melitopol, which is the next occupied Ukrainian city in the area. “The occupiers are being smoked out of Tokmak. Almost daily explosions and the liberation of settlements in the Melitopol direction transform Tokmak, which is still occupied, to a completely front-line city,” Fedorov said. While the initial distance from the Russian-occupied city of Tokmak to the frontline was about 31 km, it is now less than 20 km as the Ukrainian army advanced, taking Robotyne and areas around it. The Ukrainian army has reached the second line of Russian defense in the area.
A few days ago Ukraine liberated the village of Robotyne. Ukraine's goal is to reach the Sea of Azov and thereby cut the Russian-occupied territories in two.
As was reported, following the liberation of Robotyne, Ukrainian troops are continuing their offensive in Melitopol direction in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, bypassing minefields and advancing towards the second line of defense of the Russian Army.

In other news, Ukrainian drones damaged four large Russian Il-76 transport planes in the city of Pskov near the border with Estonia.

Geolocated footage reveals that Ukrainian forces continue to make progress. 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Ukrainian forces have advanced northeast of Kurdiumivka, located 10 kilometers southwest of Bakhmut in Donetsk Obalst, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said in their latest update on Oct. 30.
Additional geolocated footage from Oct. 29 indicates that Ukrainian forces have marginally advanced west of Robotyne in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
The Ukrainian General Staff reiterated that Ukrainian forces are continuing offensive actions near Bakhmut and offensive operations in the Melitopol (western Zaporizhzhia Oblast) direction.
In May, Russia seized control of Bakhmut, a location marked by some of the most intense combat during since February, 2022. Ukraine has been engaged in a counteroffensive since June, aiming to reclaim territories in the southern and eastern regions that are currently under occupation, including the town of Bakhmut.
Russia has strengthened its forces in the Bakhmut sector, switching from defense to active actions, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces who heads the military operations in the east, reported on Oct. 30.
Syrskyi pointed out that the situation on the eastern front continues to be challenging, with Russia escalating its activities in the Kupiansk sector. Here, Russian forces are launching attacks from multiple directions.

Robotyne is first Ukrainian breach in Russian lines of defense
The capture of the small village is seen as an important step in the counter-offensive aimed at cutting the land bridge between Russia and Crimea, and thus suffocating Moscow’s forces in the occupied areas to the south. “Robotyne has been liberated!” Ukraine’s usually reserved deputy defense minister, Hanna Maliar, sounded victorious on Monday, August 28, during her daily update on current…

Putin's dependence on mercenaries may be biting him on the ass once again. This comes as Ukraine punched through Russia's first layer of defenses in the south.
At the end of August, Ukraine declared it had finally managed to pierce Russia’s first line of defence after retaking the small village of Robotyne in Ukraine’s south. This key advance coincided with a Russian mercenary group’s threat to stop fighting on Russia’s behalf on the front lines of the village and could be a sign of more anti-Kremlin sentiment brewing among those fighting for Moscow. Although the tiny village, which had a pre-war population of fewer than 500 people, may be of little importance in itself, it lies along a strategic road that leads to the Russian-occupied road and railway hub of Tokmak. From there, another road leads to the key city of Melitopol, which, prior to Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014,was known to Ukrainians as the “gateway” to the peninsula. Last week’s victory was therefore an important advance for Ukraine. Just a few days earlier, however, fighters from Rusich, a small Russian neo-Nazi paramilitary group stationed at Robotyne’s front line, had threatened to lay down their arms – a move that may have contributed to Russia’s stinging loss there.
Yes you read that correctly. Russia uses neo-Nazi paramilitary mercenaries. So much for Putin's discredited original rationale for his invasion – that he was fighting Nazis in Ukraine.
The official reason for the threat to lay down arms, Rusich explained in an August 25 statement on Telegram, was that one of the group’s top commanders and founding members, Yan Petrovsky, had been detained in Finland and faced extradition to Ukraine – and the Russian government was not doing much about it. Petrovsky, a dual Russian-Norwegian national, co-founded Rusich back in 2014 to take part in the Russian occupation of Donbas and is believed to have been a contractor for the Wagner Group at one point. He faces various terrorism-related charges in Ukraine and risks being sentenced to between 15 and 20 years in prison if he is extradited. In a series of messages screen-grabbed by the research project Antifascist Europe, Rusich members expressed frustration with their treatment by the Russian authorities. “If the country cannot protect its citizens, why should the citizens protect the country?” asked one.
There is belated realization among fighters on the Russian side that conquering Ukraine just ain't gonna happen.
According to Jeff Hawn, a non-resident fellow at the Washington, DC-based think-tank New Lines Institute and an expert in Russian military matters, it would have been a credible scenario. [ ... ] “These guys are likely just looking for an excuse to get out,” he said. “They’re realising that Ukraine isn’t just going to break and give up.”
Somewhat related, a helicopter pilot named Maxim Kuzminov from the Russian Air Force (not a mercenary) defected to Ukraine with his Mi-8 helicopter. Ukrainian defense intelligence released a clip of Kuzminov explaining why he did what he did.

Ukraine’s current counteroffensive will not throw Russia out — not that anyone expected it to. Nor is it likely to cut the occupation in half before the winter, which might have been one of the more optimistic aims. It has, however, shown how the Russian army can be beaten. Not in 2023, but in 2024 or 2025. Thus the refrain among western allies of supporting Kyiv “for as long as it takes”.
The modest progress achieved this summer shows that, while overcoming a well-prepared conventional battlefield defence may be one of the hardest operations in war, it can be done. The Ukrainian military has only breached the first line of trenches to take Robotyne in the south, having battled for weeks through minefields to get there. Progress is about eight miles with another 55 miles to go (through three lines of defences) before reaching the sea. The aim is to cut the land bridge to Crimea. To the north and south of Bakhmut, advances amount to about five miles with 10 miles to the Russian main defensive line and 60 miles to the border.
oof ow what a war

With its recent breakthrough in Verbove, Ukrainian forces have taken a major step towards the realization of "the minimum goal" of the counteroffensive, the liberation of Tokmak. 🇺🇦👏💙💛🙏🇺🇦
#Repost@kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Ukraine's forces on the southern Zaporizhzhia front have breached Russian lines in Verbove, General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of Ukraine's military fighting in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, announced in an interview with CNN on Sept. 23.
Verbove, located a little less than 20 kilometers southeast of Robotyne, which was liberated on Aug. 28, is on the path toward the strategic hub of Tokmak.
Tarnavskyi lauded the success at Verbove but also noted that the true breakthrough on the southern front would be the liberation of Tokmak, which he stated was "the minimum goal" of the counteroffensive.
