Someone needs to explain to me how trains work, they have locomotives on both ends? 8647 when it does that. Is that called DPU?

🇺🇸 8647 isn't on the front in hat one. In the middle is confusing since they all look the same. I don't know if any Tumblr is a railfan or knows how to get 8647. I didn't see anything at the railroad tracks near me so I don't know how you'd find 8647 but it would be exciting!

On Saturday night i saw a very interesting train in Durham. It was a unit train of around 10 or 15 cars of Vestas wind turbine components headed east across North Carolina on the Norfolk Southern H-Line, pulled by a single locomotive NS 1036, an SD70ACe.

(more information and speculation below)

After researching the Vestas company, wind power in North Carolina, and wind turbine components, it seems that the components on these cars are the casings of the nacelles of the wind turbine (the main body that houses the mechanical parts and connects to the blades), along with what’s likely some of the internal components covered with tarps. Vestas is a Danish company, and their only American production facilities are both in Colorado, so perhaps they have travelled all the way from there. As far as their destination, that’s hard to say because east of Raleigh, this train could branch north or south to head anywhere along the east coast. Another potential destination however, is the Timbermill wind farm in the very east of NC, which has been under construction throughout 2023 and 2024. According to their website, delivery of turbines is expected in 2024, but unfortunately I also could not find any information on what company they have contracted with for the wind turbines.

UP 8457 (SD70ACE locomotive) is chugging through the rain to bring this mixed manifest train to Cheyenne Yard in Cheyenne Wyoming, US. Not sure what kind of industrial building 🏭 that is in the background (feel free to comment and let me know). Ever wonder what trains haul in those yellow cars immediately behind the locomotives? Automobiles. They may make the cars Ford tough, but they are hauled Union Pacific strong.

Northbound UP Manifest Train at Idalia, MO por Zach Pumphery Por Flickr: Rocketing out of Idalia after a crew change at North Dexter on the UP Chester Sub. is CNW 8701, one of the Last 2 CNW's on the point of UP Train QNLCH 10, which left North Little Rock, AR the night before at 23:23. Here the train passes one of the few remaining Cotton Belt code poles on this stretch of the railroad. The 8701 had been at North Little Rock, AR since 3-31-06 and spent over 2 months there in UP Jenks Shops for maintenance. At the time it was feared that this engine was being repainted or renumbered, when in actuality the engine was not modified from its CNW appearance, other than the shop forces actually touched up the green along the hood and the yellow Scotchlite. Amazingly, the final 2 ran around in CNW paint for more than a decade after this shot, often paired up around Chicago, sometimes with the CNW Heritage SD70ACe.
