i don't think people appreciate how good the mice & murder "oops all college humor goofballs" season was. i rewatched it right at the beginning of burrow's end (for adorable woodland creature reasons) and it's just so underrated.
first of all, every member of the cast is KILLING IT. grant is genuinely witty as a sherlock holmes-style dandy and is solving the case in real time. rekha's southern drawl gives me life. katie goes full peaky blinders. raph is a master of rolling badly and then roleplaying exactly how his character fucked it up. and sam's portrayal of buckster $ boyd is so charismatic it makes me want him back in the dome for a side quest ASAP
ally's portrayal of lars gets its own bullet point because i genuinely believe it's some of their best work. often ally's characters are the lynchpin of season lore, but lars proves how much ally shines when their talents for comedy are harnessed toward nothing but inhabiting an impossibly loyal silly little thembo who knows a lot about astrology

It started three weeks later.
Haj-deek had gotten into the habit of staying up two or three more hours later than she went back to her room, having finally gotten the dovahfly's code down well enough to start writing small sentences. She'd practiced still, once it had curled up to rest or sleep or whatever it did.
Nearly a week's worth of waking up after not enough sleep had her feeling like every limb had a weight strapped to it. Every night she kept swearing she'd go to bed earlier, but then - then, she'd ask herself, what if I figure something out? This is the only time I have to myself.
A seventh morning, and a rummage through her bag brought the solution.
Ulen had said it might be a good idea to work on her skills in some sort of weapon or hand to hand combat so she was rummaging through her bag for the skooma-scented, but more comfortable clothes. She thought about saying she'd rather do some more magic, but...maybe it was better just to go along with this.
It might be helpful if they think I'm more magic inclined, like my father...but I won't be any good at that either like this...
Her mind flipped and flopped and flipped again. It was then, as she yawned widely, that her fingers brushed against the hard glass of a bottle.
The skooma.
She looked down at the bottle.
The argonians had always told her it was a terrible drug that rotted the mind and the mouth. In Ebonheart she'd sometimes see an addict asleep in some alley, or being carried screaming away by guards.
But then she thought of the sailors. The sailors who would say they took a little bit now and then to keep them awake and alert during storms at sea, or times they absolutely needed to stay awake.
And she definitely needed that, especially considering...everything. Everything that felt like it rested on her shoulders. Everything she felt she'd fail at if she nodded off even slightly.
Just a sip, Haj-deek thought. Just to test it, just to see. She could figure any number of lies to tell if they noticed what was wrong...
She uncorked the bottle, and inhaled the scent. Jazbay grapes, it smelled like. One little sip.
It was sweet at once, but turned bitter a moment later - a lot like those red berries the Mission got every so often from Black Marsh. Haj-deek re-stopped the bottle and tucked it back into her bag, not feeling anything at first.
The first sign of something else was a tingling in her skin, like she'd had a few times when reading dramatic stories. The next was, as she was getting dressed - the sudden lack of anxiety that had been rolling about in her head for the last six months. Then as Ulen was knocking at the door to see if she was ready to get breakfast, the strangest feeling of--
--like sinking into a soft bed after a long day. Like suddenly being relieved from a pain. Like nothing could ever go wrong again.
Just this once, she thought, It's an emergency. I have to stay awake, or they might suspect something.
Yes, just once. She'd go to bed early tonight, and that would be that.

It was nearly impossible to finish breakfast without feeling like she'd be sick. Her hands were shaky, and every gulp of food seemed to take more effort than the last.
Could say I'm sick...no, I can't, I can't catch anything...
It did seem to help her spellwork, at least. Ulen praised her when she struck him with a paralysis spell that actually left all of his face trunks completely inert.
The euphoria lasted until just after the midday meal, when the anxiety began to creep back in...the old worries, along with a new one: that they could tell she wasn't quite right. That they could see it obviously, and just weren't saying anything.
No. No. I'm alright. I'm fine.
Eating wasn't any easier, but she managed to force down some bread, cheese, and a little bit of guar meat. Just enough no remarks were made on how little she ate. She complained of a stomachache just in case.
(Maybe he DID doubt her. And maybe she just wasn't seeing it because he didn't have any eyes so she couldn't judge whether he suspected her or not.)
Any second. Any second, she kept thinking, Dagoth Drals was going to say something. He was going to say he noticed. He was going to say SOMETHING.
But he didn't.
Just before dinner, the fatigue started creeping in, and by the time her restoration lesson that day was over Haj-deek felt like a dead mer walking. She didn't just feel tired, she felt exhausted - like any second, she'd topple over and sleep until noon the next day.
She went straight to bed, mumbling something about being worn out, and grateful nobody stopped her on the way back to her room.
Laying down - that felt fine, but even with the blanket above and furs below she still felt cold, and shivered until she finally fell to sleep.

The next morning it was not Ulen or Drals to sit with her at breakfast, but her father.
Haj-deek kept her eyes on her food. She felt - rested, sort of, but achy too. And that lingering paranoia that he could see right through her just wouldn't go away.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Well...enough, I guess," she replied mutely. "It just...it just took me a bit to get to sleep, I haven't been--it's hard to get to sleep lately."
"You're attempting too much at once. I am linked to the Heart, you are not. My blood, you should know, is not a ticket to endless stamina or magicka reserves."
"I know, it's just...I don't want to fail." That part was honest, at least. "The potions help keep my magicka up, and...I don't know. Ulen says you know some very good spells so I wanted to make sure I was doing as much as I could."
On a whim she added something more.
"So I've been staying up a bit, practicing the spells in my room."
"You really must not overdo this. Repeatedly exhausting your magicka reserves, even if you renew them with potions - perhaps every other day, I can have Gilvoth instruct you instead of whomever is due after the midday meal."
"And be quizzed on how to behave when some retainer or traitor gives me the side eye." Haj-deek gave a weak laugh. "Was your education like this?"
"Once your grandmother chose me to lead House Dagoth after her? Yes." There was a slight chuckle. "She wanted me aware of as many dangers in as many ways as possible. She wanted me prepared to face opponents by hand, by sword, or by magic. I have found my own hands and magic to be more than adequate."
"I think I'm doing...alright...at the magic," Haj-deek said quietly. "But I'm better fighting with my hands. Vivec said I ought to learn the spear and the sword, since...no, I'm sorry, you don't like hearing about him."
Idiot. Idiot. What if he figures you out? Stop mentioning Vivec.
"I imagine he tried to instill a lot of things in your mind. Guide what you believed."
Still she did not look at him.
"Not really. That was the strange part. Well...he showed me what he said was going to happen if Baar Dau fell. If he lost his power when the Heart was released from its prison--"
"What?"
Dagoth Ur brought his fist down on the table, jarring everything. Haj-deek practically jumped out of her seat.
"He wants to do WHAT to the Heart?"
"Release it. Uh. Get rid of it. He doesn't anymore, though. He said it just ruins everything. He told some--some wild story about how in some other time he sent a Nerevarine to Red Mountain, they used the tools on the Heart of Lorkhan, and set it free. You were--you didn't make it. And then he didn't have the power to stop Baar Dau crashing, and it caused the mountain to erupt, and--and--"
"And he left his own worshipers to burn in its fires, like the coward of a false god he is. Whatever I think of that abomination he calls a city, I at least would never have allowed such damage to occur." He ranted for several minutes in the same vein, and the longer he went on, the more Haj-deek shrunk over her breakfast.
Why did you say that? Why? He's going to know everything now. He's not dumb. He's going to figure me out. He's going to figure it ALL out.
She wished she could speak to Vivec, or to the argonians, or anyone else, really. But there was no one right now.
No one but her father and his flaming anger against Vivec. It wasn't until after another few minutes' ranting and on (she assumed) noticing how quiet she'd gotten that he finally stopped.
"I-I don't--" she stammered, "I didn't agree with him, if you were wondering. I mean, that...that I had to listen to him and it's not that..."
He raised a hand, and Haj-deek couldn't stop herself from flinching.
His hand lowered again. This time, though, it didn't curl into a fist and bang the table. A moment later he got up and moved off.
You're going to mess everything up if you keep blabbing things, she thought, feeling a few tears prick at her eyes. What do you think you're doing? This isn't helping ANYONE.
She wanted to speak to someone else, ask some advice...but there was no one she could really talk to here. And she knew it might not be helpful but - who else did she have to ask about this than Vivec?
That day, instead of the usual rotation of magic, Gilvoth spoke to her on how to spot the more obvious signs of a traitor (while giving her, she thought, a stare that told her he knew everything...but he couldn't, could he?) before lunch. After, Ulen brought her a book on Saint Veloth and the Chimer, and she was asked to read and recite certain things from it.
That night Haj-deek mentioned her fears in a letter to Vivec. The moment she got a reply she burned the one she'd written.
I have an idea. Do you know the spell Recall? he wrote.
Yes, she wrote back, Well, one of my father's followers gave me a couple rings. One with Mark, one with Recall.
Cast Mark, and hide the ring after. Then take the ring with Recall.
She took out the rings Orvas had given her, and after casting Mark, wrote to Vivec that she had done so.
A minute later, two scrolls of Almsivi Intervention appeared on the table, along with a short letter detailing what to do next. He mentioned, too, that she should bring the dovahfly with her, so she woke it up.
This was terribly risky. A hundred things could go wrong, she thought. More than a hundred. But she had no one else to talk to or get advice from--no one within easy reach, anyway. Vivec it would have to be. As long as she wasn't gone more than a couple hours, surely - surely they wouldn't realize. And even if they did...surely she could make some excuse or the other. But what if they didn't believe her?
She read the first scroll--and felt a lurch in her gut, then a prickling at her neck as the room shifted around her. Now she was--outside. Outside, with blight storms, because of COURSE there would be blight storms on! She covered her face, struggling to walk forward, until she saw an ordinator.
"Sera!" she called out, still vaguely afraid when he turned around. "Which way to the Mages Guild?"
He didn't seem to suspect anything, and gave her the directions without any fuss- "Almost directly west, it's opposite of the Fighters' Guild, which is situated almost against the wall. She rushed off before he could say anything more. Gods, how hard it was to see ANYTHING around here, with this blight storm going on? She found herself practically hugging the wall for a bit just for some relief.

He opened his eyes, groaning at the leaden feeling in all his limbs.
Where was he? Why was the wind blowing RED? Nothing looked familiar here...he stumbled up to his feet and still clinging to the Rose in his hands, tried to get his bearings despite the throbbing in his head and the nausea threatening to make him vomit.
The sign he saw, when he looked up, was The Rat in the Pot. That wasn't the tavern he'd been drinking in, not at all...where was there? Who were all these guards? What in oblivion kind of armor were they all--
Someone collided with him. He nearly fell back, but they (no, she!) actually did.
"I'm--I'm sorry," he said, extending a hand, "Let me help you up."
"T-thanks," she replied. She was nearly as tall as he was, a surprise at her age. "Are you alright? You shouldn't be out here with nothing to cover your face."
"What, why?"
"You'll get a disease. The blight winds will - let's get indoors."
"I need to get home," he said, but he let her lead him anyway. This girl seemed like she knew where she was going, maybe she could help. "Can you possibly tell me where I am?"
"Ald'ruhn," she said. "Vvardenfell."
"I'm in MORROWIND? Oh...oh, no...that's--" he shook his head. How could Sanguine have gotten him this far away from Cyrodiil?! "Can you tell me how to get back?"
"I'm--going to Vivec City," she said, "You can come with me through the Mages Guild. When you get there, ask directions to the boat man to take you to Seyda Neen or to Ebonheart - they're port towns. Then you can get back to...wherever it is you need to go."
"Thank you, my lady."
"I'm no lady." She seemed nervous, somehow. Well, he was a strange man who was hungover. If he was a woman he'd probably be nervous around him too.
She lead him to the Mages Guild and still having at least a full bag of coins if not much else, he paid the transport fee - a moment later they were both in the Vivec City Mages' Guild.
"Now," she said, "Ask one of the ordinators for directions, it can get confusing getting around this city. I've got to--go see someone else."
"Busy night?" he asked.
"Something like that."
"Might I know your name, my lady? I should like to know to whom my thanks go."
"Haj-deek," she said, "And really, you don't need to thank me."
"One should always give thanks when a favor has been done." He gave her hand a kiss. "Martin of nowhere in particular, at your service."
"Get yourself home safely and you'll have thanked me enough." She rushed off then, rounded a corner - and was gone.
He stumbled around a bit after that, completely confused at the layout of the city. The Plaza was easy enough to get around, but finding the way down?
The boat. He could see a man next to a pier over the edge of the railing, but how to get down through ANOTHER layer of mazelike halls was another thing entirely, in this state.
It was this reason, he would later say, that lead him to the door of the Black Shalk Cornerclub. It was the trembling in his hands that lead him to take one drink - just to settle himself.
At least he couldn't get into any trouble here.
