The Secret Labs of WWII: Innovations in Warfare
World War II was a conflict fought on battlefields, in the skies, and across the oceans. But it was also a war fought in the shadows, in laboratories hidden away from prying eyes, where brilliant minds raced against time to develop technologies that could turn the tide of the conflict. These “secret labs” were hotbeds of innovation, where scientists, engineers, and researchers worked on projects…

Question: What do you use when modeling your pictures? I saw some Fallout 4 dadcready pics with Duncan (which is absolutely adorable I love it UGHHH) do what program did you use?
Hi! (Apologies for the lateness, I only just saw this in my inbox!)
Screen Archer Menu(SAM) is the tool I use! 🙌🏼
Tumblr media
SAM has a lot of features, but the most notable are: Adding pre-made poses to characters or using the skeleton rig to adjust poses or make your own
Adjusting the placement of characters and items (also allows turning off collision - which I've found extremely helpful when I get stuck in something 😅) - you open the console to select the NPC/item. This also works for placing hats or weapons that I drop from my inventory! No collision means I can place them wherever I want 🙂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Choosing which weather you want adjust the sun placement. Add lights (if you install SOE workshop pack) Jumping to ANY exterior and interior location in the game. - Even London to Boston! 🙌🏼🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Editing Character's heights, add facial expressions (either animation flavours from the game or morphs) and you can access Looks Menu from SAM too!
Giving you access to every item from base game and your mods for dressing up your characters and the set. (this can be outfits and weapons, items you'd pick up in the world and even full buildings and NPS!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for Duncan, well, I spawned a child NPC and edited him using SAM!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, I guess storytelling plays a part, I have an idea of a scenario I want to make and then I use the tools available to make it happen, Sometimes it's as easy as dropping some poses on the characters, other times I need to get creative (that Flamingo snap is a great example of that! 🤣)
I've found myself spending upwards of an hour dressing a set and posing the characters! I find the whole process quite relaxing! 😅

#5 from the oc ask game for cord- “how do they typically dress? does their wardrobe lean more towards practicality or aesthetics?” and number #13 “what languages do they speak? how fluently?” and #15 “how big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?” for grace, please? — 💕 @shoshiwrites
How do they typically dress? Does their wardrobe lean towards practicality or aesthetics?
Cord's wardrobe is extremely practical. She was raised by her father and spent lots of time in his workshop after school, so the clothes she's the most comfortable in are collared shirts and slacks, loafers and flight suits. Some skirts, for school, but after her mother died when she was twelve, she sort of gave up hair ribbons since there wasn't anyone around to tie them, and that sort of carried forward into adulthood. As she's gotten older, she's gotten a little more varied with color and some touches of personal style, but it's still very straightforward. It's whatever gets her out of her airplane the fastest or keeps her warm during early mornings at the tower - uniform slacks and flight jackets and oxfords. Growing up around soldiers she knows how to polish shoes and take care of herself, but she's not what we'd call aesthetic. She also doesn't wear a lot of jewelry until someone gives her some she cares about.
What languages do they speak? how fluently?
Grace grew up in Kent (Margate, specifically) but her parents moved where they did to be around other members of their family and people from the same region, so she also grew up speaking Italian in the neighborhood and is still fluent. Her family is all from southern Italy, so she speaks in that dialect.
How big or small is their family? who did they live with growing up? do they live with anyone now?
Grace's immediate family is pretty small - it's just her and her parents, although I feel like there could be a couple of deceased infant siblings in there somewhere. Her extended family, however, is quite large, and she grew up with a large crowd of cousins to run around with so she's more like a middle child than an only one - someone who's good at reading people and trying to figure out what makes people tick. She lived with her parents, but also spent a lot of time with her maternal grandparents, learning how to cook and helping out in the shop. (Her grandparents run a confectionery and ice cream shop, and Grace worked the counter during the summers when the tourist season was busy.) As an adult, Grace managed to get out of Margate by joining the WRENS, where she lived in a barracks with a lot of other women, and then by volunteering for SOE, where she lived in barracks again during training. Now that she's on field work, I think she lives alone - her radio operator obviously can't be seen closely with her, so it's just her in whatever rented room she's in for the time being. I think on some level she likes the solitude that field work sometimes brings - it's a break from all the noisy rooms she's gotten so used to.

The Life That I Have
Thank you!!! This is my WW2 Poem Code AU in which most of the mash characters find themselves stranded in London during the Blitz. Some of them might be British in this because I'm running out of reasons for people to be stranded there.
Hawkeye - nearly a fully fledges surgeon but had to take a sabbatical for mental health reasons and decided to check out Europe when WW2 breaks out and he gets recruited by the SOE to write poem codes. He specialises in dirty limericks and the such but is very effective and since he can't practice medicine, it is his one way to help people.
BJ - got offered a job at a London hospital and just moved there when WW2 breaks out. Peg and Erin are still in the US, they were supposed to follow him in a couple of months when he has arranged everything and settled into the job and now have to wait out the war. BJ wants to go home but can't afford to abandon his job, both financially and ethically. He becomes friends with the only other stranded Americans he meets, Hawkeye and Margaret (and later Charles) and contributes a few poems too
Charles - found himself in France at the start of WW2 and before he can leave gets shot in the leg (during the Phoney War phase ironically, because the universe hates him too) and ends up in London to recover, where he meets Hawkeye and BJ and gets recruited by the SOE too
Margaret - I was thinking about making her an American nurse in an exchange programme but I am not sure if I am happy with this so I am still workshopping her role but I really want her to be stranded there too
The main thing of this WIP would be having these characters try to survive the horrors of the Blitz and negotiate their wish to go home with their responsibility to help before the US joins the war and also draw attention to the fact that poem codes are really cool. The title is based on a poem code by Leo Marks. There will be air raid shelters and St Paul's Survives and stuff like that. Maybe something about the children's transports and civilian evacuations idk.

On January 8th 1697 Thomas Aikenhead was executed in Edinburgh.
This is a crackin, if sad tale, and shows you how religious beliefs can be a blight on our history.
So who was oor Thomas, a villain?, a murderer?, a smuggler?, or some enemy of the state? No Thomas's crime was blasphemy who took the lord's name in vain.......this would be comic if it wasn't for the tragic fact that he was executed, unlike the man in Life of Brian, who uttered the words Jehova, Thomas complained that he wished he was warming himself in hell rather than that chilly night walking past the recently built Tron Kirk on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Well that's the simple story that the tour guides that take you round the Old Town will tell you, there is a bit more to it so I will bore you with a bit more of the detail. Thomas Aikenhead came from a well-to-do family in Edinburgh, his father being listed as a surgeon but more probably an apothecary, a dispenser of herbs and potions. Both his parents were dead by the time he became a student at Edinburgh University at the age of 16 or 17.
His mother had been a daughter of the manse, and you would think that would have made Aikenhead wary of challenging the established religion of the time, namely the all-powerful Church of Scotland, especially while still a student and under the constant gaze of professors, lecturers and, as it turned out, his fellow students.
These were the dying days of a curious period in Scottish history. Aikenhead would have been four when the ‘Wizard of the West Bow’ Major Thomas Weir was executed in 1670. Weir was by day an extreme Calvinist but by night an incestuous Satanist and it takes no great leap of reason to see that an impressionable young boy might well have been affected by the trial and execution of a local celebrity that lived not far from him.
The 1680s was also the ‘killing time’ for the Covenanters when many died because of they worshipped their same god in differing ways!
Thomas was a keen student and an avid reader, he may or may not have known and Edinburgh bookseller, John Frazer, who had been prosecuted after admitting either reading, or being in possession of Charles Blount’s Oracles of Reason a book I know nothing about but gather it relates to Deism, which questioned the existence or more importanyly, non-existence of God or Satan, Frazer had repented ad as it was a first offence was sackclothed and jailed in the old Tolbooth for a number of months.
Anyway, Thomas had a friend, well he thought he had a friend, Murdo Craig, but Murdo, on the sly had been keeping notes on Aitkenhead, and his dalliances with blasphemous ideals, we know that because they formed a large part of the indictment against Aikenhead.
“Nevertheless it is of verity, that you Thomas Aikenhead, shakeing off all fear of God and regaird to his majesties lawes, have now for more than a twelvemoneth by past, and upon severall of the dayes within the said space, and ane or other of the same, made it as it were your endeavour and work in severall compainies to vent your wicked blasphemies against God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, and against the holy Scriptures, and all revealled religione, in soe far as upon ane or other of the dayes forsaid, you said and affirmed, that divinity or the doctrine of theologie was a rapsidie of faigned and ill-invented nonsense, patched up partly of the morall doctrine of philosophers, and pairtly of poeticall fictions and extravagant chimeras, or words to this effect or purpose, with severall other such reproachfull expressions.”
That was just for starters. Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees, the Lord Advocate of the day, had taken a personal interest in the case and he decided to throw the whole lot of Craig’s testimony at Aikenhead who was arrested in November, 1696, and charged under the Blasphemy Act of 1661 which carried the death penalty. He also charged Aikenhead under a more recent act, which made it a criminal offence to ‘deny, impugn or quarrel’ about the existence of God.The prosecution papers go on to record
“You have lykwayes in discourse preferred Mahomet to the blessed Jesus, and you have said that you hoped to see Christianity greatly weakened, and that you are confident that in a short tyme it will be utterly extirpate.”
For Mahomet, read Muhammad, could young Thomas be an Islam convert in 17th century Edinburgh, I very much doubt it, they just needed to make an example of the young student, and he knew by now knew that he was in very great trouble and protested in effect that he was guilty only of the sin of being youthful and had been led astray by the books he had read. He claimed to have repented of his anti-Christian beliefs and was once again a good Presbyterian. In this way he seems to have thrown himself upon the mercy of the court, but there was no mercy.  On Christmas Eve, 1696, a jury found him guilty. Sir James Stewart asked for the death penalty and it was granted and “pronounced for doom,” as Scottish judges were still saying well into the 20th century in capital punishment cases. Aikenhead pleaded for his life to the Privy Council emphasising his youth, his dire circumstances, and the fact that he was reconciled to the Protestant religion. There was some support for the death sentence to be commuted from at least two councillors and two Church of Scotland ministers, but the General Assembly of the Kirk intervened, demanding that Aikenhead suffer
“vigorous execution to curb the abounding of impiety and profanity in this land”.
In his last letter to friends, written in the Tolbooth prison in Edinburgh as he awaited execution, Aikenhead at last gave a plausible explanation for his conduct – that he had been a disappointed seeker after truth. He wrote:
“It is a principle innate and co-natural to every man to have an insatiable inclination to the truth and to seek for it as for hid treasure. So I proceeded until the more I thought thereon, the further I was from finding the verity I desired.” In truth, in a repressed society the student had just gone too far in rejecting the doctrines of Christianity calling it “feigned and ill-invented nonsense”
Aikenhead went to his death on January 8, 1697, hanged on the scaffold at Shrubhill between Edinburgh and Leith. It is said that before he died he proclaimed that moral laws were the work of governments and men. In his hand as the noose was plced around his neck was the Holy Bible. The execution angered many people for many years afterwards. The great English historian Thomas Babington Macaulay wrote an account of the hanging and called the execution “a crime such has never since polluted the island.”He continued: “The preachers who were the boy’s murderers crowded round him at the gallows, and, while he was struggling in the last agony, insulted Heaven with prayers more blasphemous than any thing that he had ever uttered.”
There was other evidence of church authorities being present as Aikenhead died. He was the last man in Britain to be hanged for blasphemy.
According to Arthur Herman in his book "How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It", the execution of Aikenhead was “the last hurrah of Scotland’s Calvinist ayatollahs” before the dawning of the age of reason in the Enlightenment.
Now we can all rejoice in The Enlightenment but a full 30 years later in the small town of Dornoch in Sutherland, Janet Horne was put on trial for the “crime” of having a daughter whose feet and hands were misshapen and who had herself given birth to a son with disabilities. She was the last woman in Britain to be burned at the stake for being a witch, her death bringing to an end the “burning time” when perhaps 4000 Scottish women were executed for the crime of witchcraft.
I thought I would add a wee bit more about Shrubhill in Leith, as most of us usually only regard Edinburgh's Old Town, The Tolbooth, and Grassmarket as sites where executions took place. I can't find out why Aikenhead was taken to, at what at the time, was a different town for his executions I did however find records  of several taking place at the site, now student accommodation, but the site of Edinburghs tram workshops and powerstation, but beforehand not many know that it was the site of he gibbet known as the Gallow Lee, literally the "field with the gallows",
Bodies were buried at the base of the gallows or their ashes scattered if burnt. The most famous of those that met their end here was perhaps Major Weir, the Wizard of the West Bow.
1570- Two criminals strangled and burned to death.
1570 (4 October)- Rev. John Kelloe minister of Spott, East Lothian (near Dunbar) strangled and burnt for the murder of his wife
1664- Nine witches strangled and burnt
1670- Major Thomas Weir, the self-confessed warlock, strangled and burnt for witchcraft (almost the only self-confessed witch executed).
1678- Five witches strangled and burnt
1680- Part of the body of Covenanter David Hackston was hung in chains after his execution at the mercat cross in Edinburgh for the murder of Archbishop Sharp in 1679.
1681 (10 October)- Covenanters Garnock, Foreman, Russel, Ferrie and Stewart hanged and beheaded. Their headless bodies were buried at the site and their heads placed on the Cowgate Port at the foot of the Pleasance. Friends reburied the bodies in the graveyard of the West Kirk (St. Cuthberts). The heads were retrieved, placed in a box and then buried in garden ground at Lauriston. They lay there until 7 October 1726 when the then owner, Mr Shaw, had them exhumed and reburied near the Martyrs' Monument in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
1697 (8 January)- Thomas Aikenhead, a 19-year-old theology student at Edinburgh University became the last person to be executed under Scotland's blasphemy laws (and the last in Britain to be executed for that crime).
1752 (10 January)- Norman Ross, a footman, hanged for the murder of Lady Baillie, sister of Home, Laird of Wedderburn. The body was left to hang in a gibbet cage "for many a year" and became a local ghoulish tourist attraction.
Post mid 18th Century the Nor’ Loch was drained and the city expanded to the north by the building of the New Town with stone quarried from nearby Craigleith quarry. In such building sand was needed to add to the lime mortar and Gallow Lee proved to be just what was needed. The owner of Gallow Lee charged the builders to cart away the sand, containing the ashes and other remains of thousands of victims. The sandy mound of the Gallow Lee has gone I wonder how many New Town residents are aware that the very fabric of their building is bound together with the remains of  these poor women convicted of being witches, covenanters and criminals?

Chapter One
A TZzzzzttt of Class
Eskom remains South Africa's sole electricity provider; which, under the Competition Act is unlawful. However, no competitors have ever challenged the status quo. Until now. Before now... ja. They (Eskom) have been kind of running shit, as an SOE but the only time they seemed to have a handle on shit was when then-Vice President H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa was at the helm of the Emergency Board.
So, how Eskom-provided electricity works is as follows:
♧ There is a large nuclear or thermal power plant (or a hydro-electricity dam) in a rural location. This power station is sometimes the source of the electricity consumed in multiple cities and towns, even a whole province.
Tumblr media
♧ From this central power creation station, power is transported via thick, copper cable lines all the way to a town's power station, where, many people err to think, power is created. Nope. It's just a series of transistor transistor nodes in the conduit.
Tumblr media
♧ Another sub-station can be found in residential areas or 'the suburbs', that is called a sub-station and is usually the size of a one-bedroomed or bachelor pad and fenced off for everyone's safety.
♧ The last 'sub-station' between the power plant and the home or business in which it is made use of, is the street power box; which is usually found on a corner and has no fenced off boundaries and is usually about a metre tall.
From this box, the electricity is sent to the home or business' electricity power box. This, in the circuitry of Eskom-provided electricity, would be a switch or circuit-breaker; as well in function, a cell. However, because these parts of the circuit, up to the power station have no physical switches of the size needed to disconnect or reconnect the quantities of electricity we are talking, corner box tiny, fragile phone switchboards are hardly making a difference to the nearly unlimited power that can be siphoned off the national grid. And is, currently, if you ask me.
Tumblr media
Single Phase Power - This is electricity meant for home use. Eskom supplies home consumers with single phase electricity. Small firms (with 5 office  employees in total) and even massive skyscraper-housed firms (with 2300 office employees) would both be using single phase power. If each floor had their own power box, as is usually the case in multiple floors. This means that the surge of power in wattage that can be accessed is limited.
This is easily identified by a plug wire thickness of copper cabling needed to transmit a constant stream of electricity, used to connect different nodes or switches in the one phase power box.
Three Phase Power - This is the kind of electricity consumer you would be, if you had a wood workshop, for example, in which you used multiple power tools as well as the usual office and kitchen equipment. Often, when one wants to open a business; either at home or at a bought or leased premises, one would have to enquire whether the zoning of that erf (street number or floor or sub-erf) is residential one-phase or industrial three phase. The reason for this is if you operate from a 3 phase street (yes. Three phase is applied to whole streets at a time) then you would be paying 6 times as much for electricity, even if you were only operating an office needing only one phase electricity supply.
If you wanted to change the zoning of your street to three phase power, you would have to first put an ad in the local newspaper announcing your intention to make an application to change the zoning as well as send a notice via registered mail to all residents/business operators, in the street you live or operate in. You would have to host a meeting at a venue at which any stakeholders could come and voice their agreement or concerns with your proposed application. Unfortunately, if you have even just one person in disagreement, you will not be permitted to continue the application; which is lodged at your nearest Civic Centre.
Tumblr media
The reason for this; perhaps not obvious at the time; is that three phase power costs about 6 times more per unit than residential or one phase electricity; and even if the rest of your street does not need three phase power, they end up paying for it. This is because the power box on your corner, that services the whole street needs to be upgraded to three phase. Probably, for that reason, you have to hand deliver notices of your intention to lodge an application; as well as a notice and details of your meeting, regarding the proposed re-zoning of that street; at every house number in that street.
Tumblr media
Once the zoning is three phase, it is difficult to get it re-zoned back to residential; if not impossible; probably due to the infrastructure and street box upgrade because three phase power requires thicker copper cables; all the way to your power box. And all the way back to Eskom or your local Power Plant.
The benefit to installing three phase power is that electricity doesn't trip and heavy machinery and devices can be used; with abandon; and without a weak electrical power source that is not equipped to handle such a high rate of power consumerage.
Tumblr media
Quite often, people living in the suburbs, never check the municipal zoning of their street and as a result, end up buying/renting a house that is zoned under a three phase electricity supply or semi-industrial zoning. This can significantly lower your home, the street and the suburb's real estate value. Non-consumers of three phase have been known to be crippled, financially, by the rate charged for the unnecessary cost of an oversupply of Eskom's three phase electricity.
Tumblr media
Other types of businesses that make use of three phase power are:
◇ Laundrettes
◇ Specialist medical facilities
◇ Metal Workshops
◇ Small Factories
◇ Food Processing outfits that need freezing and refrigeration
◇ Auto repair shops
◇ Scrapyards
◇ Lodges and spas
◇ Showrooms
Wherever a lot of copper wiring is found in a machine, device or tool, it's a good indication that the devicemakes use of large quantities of electricity. The less copper, the cheaper it is to run; electricity-wise.
Tumblr media
Any item, which has a heating element or a cooling fan, is also, more likely than not, consuming a lot of electricity. Any items that vibrate, rotate, oscillate or provide a force of motion (like electric scooters) or hairdryers also consume a substantial amount of power as opposed to manual or semi-manual (for example, with batteries) devices.
Tumble-dryers, heaters, electric blankets, hair irons, ovens and lawnmowers as well as air-conditioners are all high energy consuming appliances that DO trip residential zone power boxes; when used with too many plug points in use, simultaneously. Electric gates, water pumps used for water features, Jacuzzis and swimming pools are also high consumers of electricity.

I Started MMA Training Today
youtube
Body by Thor (Centr) has a lot of different programmes when it comes to fitness. The basic planner does a mix of them, alternating what you’re working on each day. I still can’t do most of the fitness tracks in the programme, so I’ve been having a hard time keeping up with the fitness part.
Today, I decided to start focusing on MMA training. I don’t generally talk about it anymore, due to being too ill most of the time to attend classes, but I’ve studied a bunch of different styles of martial arts (eastern and western), though I’ve mastered none of them.
Originally, I did aikido off and on with a friend of mine who was chill with showing me what she was learning from her paid classes. My family has always been fairly poor, and that really hit hard after I broke into pointe work in ballet (which I had to give up due to costs); it’s only gotten worse since I can’t work like a normal person. Most of my friends who do martial combat have always been extremely cool about teaching me what they were paying to learn.
From there, after an interesting duel at a wedding between myself and a good friend (I’ll post that story later), I started learning what’s probably my most favourite martial form - Shorinjin Ryu. Also called
Saito Ninjitsu
, my friend was learning from one of the like three places in the mainland US that taught the form at the time. It’s really the form that feels the most natural to me, and I was learning fairly quickly - about two weeks into it, I threw a 300 lbs man, and I was maybe 125 sopping wet at that point.
I’ve wanted to go back to SR/SN for years, but there are super limited locations on where to learn the form at, given that it’s literally a family form that’s been handed down for generations. They do online training now, so I may eventually get back into that, but for most of my life, SR/SN was just unavailable after I left Utah.
While in San Diego, I got into two other forms. I attended a weekly class for a bit on Muay Thai, though when I moved away from Imperial Beach, that got less and less viable, thanks I-5 traffic.
The second form I learned while in San Diego was Jeet Kun Do. My original team lead at SOE was into martial arts and decided that the monthly JKD workshops were a great way for us to bond. SOE paid for it, initially, though we all ended up having to pay for it after the first few months. When the lead got moved to head up QA, we all fell out of going to JKD together, but I’d learned a fair bit at that point.
Displaying no telegraphs of my own, learning to read the telegraphs of others, and relying on speed and lack of direction to overcome an opponent became integrated into how I fight. Though I lack the money for a rapier yet, I’ve been mentally developing a JKD based form of rapier combat, using my lightsaber (which is far too heavy and bulky) to toy with the form from time to time. Much to the dismay of most fencers, the JKDR eliminates the traditional stances, opting for a fairly neutral and hard to read combat stance loosely based on some of the JKD positions. Fencing relies heavily on reading telegraphs, and while it doesn’t work to eliminate them, it does work to cause misdirection with them. Eliminating telegraphs and the traditional stances make it harder for another fencer to deal with the fighter (hence traditional fencers screaming, much like they did when a guy in the SCA brought in Chinese based fencing styles).
Since moving away from San Diego, particularly in moving back East to live with Mum after my medical disorders caught up to me, I haven’t done any formal or semi-formal combat training. I haven’t even really been able to keep up on what I know of combat.
The only thing I’ve done since moving here is absorbed (literally) a couple of different lightsaber styles (most notable, Asohka Tano’s style) via Graded Motor Imagery. One of my physical therapists last year discovered that I have a ridiculously high GMI index, to the point where seeing any movement based activity will trigger it; we actually did a two week movement detox, where I couldn’t view or read anything that had more than walking in it, just to see how high my GMI learning was. My pain decreased exponentially, and we figured out that yeah, I learn via GMI, and my body is constantly thinking I’ve worked out when I haven’t because of it. (Though really, bless my brain for letting learning ridiculous things like Tano’s fighting style by watching shite tonnes of Clone Wars/Rebels be possible.)
So, I’ve decided to focus on MMA training as my main track in Centr. While that’s not to say that I won’t keep up with Functional and Foundational Training by the likes of Da Rulk (because let’s be honest, that bear’s a god) and Dr. Eric Goodman - it just means it will be my...centre. (Pls don’t kill me, Thor!)
Given I’ve shown off Miss Hall, I may as well show of Da Rulk and Dr. Goodman.
