my fav thing about sunrise on the reaping was when haymitch was like yeah caeser i'm a lone wolf 😏 i'm with the newcomers but i'm not WITH the newcomers, yknow? they call me a rascal. a rebel against the gamemasters. I scored a ONE and that is a THREAT. you do not want to mess with me 🙅
cut to him with like 20 kids following him around like ducklings, him hiding in his t-shirt, him letting a bunny guide him to safety because it reminded him of his girlfriend, and him making nightlights out of potatoes.

It gets to me how much love is found throughout Sunrise on the Reaping. Haymitch loved his mother and Sid and Lenore and Louella and they loved him. Mags loved every tribute she mentored, she wanted them to create their own fates, even in the games. Beetee loved Ampert so much that he would rather take his own life than see him harmed. The tragedy is that the love didn't stop all the deaths. But in the end, the point was that the fight must continue. Even if the spark flickers out, persevering means the legacies of all those gone won't be forgotten. And that theme echos across the entire franchise. In the end, just like with the book of memories, it's about not forgetting those who fought for a better future they didn't get to see.

this is making me so emotional. haymitch, giving all that he can from the age of 16 to forget everyone that was dear to him. haymitch, 26 years later, still remembering everything, despite decades of drowning himself in alcohol and loneliness. remembering the little details about them that he tried so hard to forget.
finally able to memorialize them, in color, in peeta’s careful paintings, and in music, in katniss’ words and descriptions. even though his mind lost color and music, his loved ones regain it as he finally lets himself remember.

CANNOT stop thinking about how elizabeth bank's had effie say haymitch's name after drawing him during the reaping. after sotr that means SO much more. the hesitancy, the way she almost breathes it out, like it knocks all the air from her lungs. how betrayed and awful she must have felt reading out the name of the man she had grown up alongside, who she had known since his first reaping
it meant more than them just being "district 12 mentors" (effie unofficially). effie had been with him from the start, had Known him from the start. they've been paired up since the beginning of it all. how horrible for her to be promoted to 12's escort as some sort of reward for doing well with haymitch, only to be the one forced to read out his name 25 years later

Rereading The Hunger Games after reading Sunrise on the Reaping and every single "Sweetheart" from Haymitch has me sobbing on the floor. The way SOTR changes my perspective of this whole story. Suzanne, your mind. why did you do this to me.

Reading the epilogue of SOTR, Haymitch says he kept his promise to Lenore Dove, "or at least lent a hand" but he did so much more for the rebellion than he thinks!
He isolated himself from his friends and loved ones, including Katniss' father Burdock. He wanted to keep them safe from Snow's petty hand of vengeance. So Haymitch drowns his sorrows in alcohol, Snow is satisfied, and he moves on.
Burdock gets to live long enough to marry and have children, Katniss goes on to lead the rebellion.
And the cherry on top, Haymitch gets to have a family again, looking after the child of his old best friend who shares his grit and difficult nature.

"When Lenore Dove comes to me now, she’s not angry or dying, so I think she’s forgiven me. She’s grown older with me, her face etched with fine lines, her hair touched with gray. Like she’s been living her life beside me as the years passed, instead of lying in her grave. Still so rare and radiant. I fulfilled my promise about the reaping, or at least lent a hand, but she says I can’t come to her yet.
I have to look after my family."

effie doing her best to look out for haymitch
sotr makes it obvious that effie is very capable and smart and socially savvy- there is absolutely no way she got stuck being the escort for district 12 for 24 years and just was never offered any opportunity to rise through the ranks or be promoted to a "better" district.
so i FIRMLY believe that means she chose to stay with district 12 because she knew she was literally the only person who was able to look out for haymitch and be a constant kindness in his life.
