I Am King
This is a little different.. I hope you all like it. 🩷
King Florence + the machine
Melissa Schemmenti isn’t an impulsive person. Okay well, maybe she is. She did have to go to court for an impulsive punch one time but the guy had it coming. But when it comes to her body, she’s thought about this next step.
Driving to her appointment her heart thuds hard against her ribcage in excitement, the bass of the song she’s listened to on repeat for over a year. The words put a fire under her to do better for herself, not because she needs to be in a relationship, but because she feels ready. Finally.
We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children
And about the world ending, and the scale of my ambition
And how much is art really worth
The very thing you're best at is the thing that hurts the most
When she was younger she had thought about getting a tattoo until Joe talked her out of it, telling her it wasn’t ladylike. It was a petty argument, and one she did not care to have towards the end of her marriage.
But you need your rotten heart
Your dazzling pain like diamond rings
You need to go to war to find material to sing
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am king
Having a man like Joe try to police her body was never good for her mental health, god help anyone that tries to do that now. Pulling up to the tattoo shop she takes a deep breath looking at the sign and the welcoming light blue color on the window.
“Okay, you’re doing this.” She breathes out grabbing her purse getting out of the car. Inside the shop the walls are a welcoming light blue and each artist section is divided into a cubical. With classic rock playing through the speakers Melissa relaxes a bit as a young woman comes to the counter.
“Hey! You must be Melissa.” The stranger smiles at the redhead. “Ava told me what we’re doing today, come on back.”
As Melissa follows the woman back, she makes a mental note to kick Ava’s ass. She left out that the tattoo artist was hot. Incredibly hot. So much so that as Melissa fills out the proper paperwork and the woman sets up the station with all sterile materials, she gets lost looking at the art on the walls, the one that catches her eye the most is a painting of a nude woman, curvy and sat sideways looking out a window.
“That’s one of my older paintings,” the artists smiles, looking up from her station for a moment.
“Yeah? It’s gorgeous, the gold frame is perfect with it.” Melissa smiles admiring the work, curious as to who the model was.
“I’ve been meaning to take it down, reminders of exes, ya know?” The artist chuckles.
This catches Melissa’s attention. She was doing something as a reminder of her ex, but instead of a painful reminder it’ll be a powerful one. She was in control now.
“Alright, Melissa, here are the designs I came up with after your consultation email, all different sizes, we can play around with them as much as you want until it’s exactly how you want it.” She smiles.
Looking over the three simple words Melissa smiles, willing herself to hold the tears back. “This one.” She points.
“Perfect!” The young woman beams.
As Melissa’s walked through the process of how it’ll go and the stencil is put on, the words play over and over in her head even as she lifts her shirt up and rests her arm over her head, ready for the tattoo.
Feeling a warm gloved finger put the gel on the stencil, she stays completely still.
“Ready to rock n roll?” She smiles.
“Party on,” Melissa chuckles nervously, licking her lips.
The buzz of the machine sounds and Melissa feels strong fingers stretch the skin on her side just beneath her breast.
“Take a deep breath for me,” the artist instructs.
Melissa closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, letting it out when she feels the sharp scratch of the machine.
“Good girl.”
The redheads eyes snap open at the words used. She knows it probably doesn’t mean anything coming from the woman, but god did it sound nice coming from someone like her.
The tattoo doesn’t hurt much just like Melissa thought, and when it’s done she pulls her arm back slightly to meet the woman’s eyes as she cleans up the tattoo.
“Alright, Melissa, that’s it! Your first tattoo.” She smiles. “Check it out in the mirror, then I’ll bandage you up and walk you through the aftercare instructions.”
Carefully getting up off the chair Melissa gets up looking at her now inked skin, the three words giving her a confidence boost she’ll always be able to feel now. “Thanks, hon. This is amazing.”
The artist smiles, leaning forward to carefully put the clear bandage over the ink. Her fingers are soft and warm, and she smells amazing this close Melissa thinks.
The three words go through her head once more. She’s her own person.
At the front of the shop Melissa pays for her tattoo and tips generously leaning against the counter.
“So, hon, if I have any questions about taking this bandage off or anything like that can I call the shop and ask to talk to you?” She asks with a shrug and pursed lips.
The artist matches her smile quirking a brow. “You could, but if it’s easier for you, just text me or give me a call.” She says grabbing a business card from the counter writing her number on the back of it. “Anything you need, Melissa,” she shrugs, “let me know.”
Melissa takes the card with a smile tucking it safely into her purse to be used later on.
“Thanks again, hon. I’m sure you’ll hear from me soon.” She smiles slinging her bag onto her shoulder.
The artist smiles and sends her a wink. “Looking forward to it.”
Melissa leaves the shop with a pep in her step, even more so when she gets to her car and sees a text from Ava asking how it went with her friend. She laughs, shaking her head with a smile as her music starts to play again.
But a woman is a changeling, always shifting shape
Just when you think you have it figured out
Something new begins to take
What strange claws are these scratching at my skin?
I never knew my killer would be coming from within
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride,
I am king.

Currently on view at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery is the Thomas Scheibitz exhibition Argos Eyes. The show includes paintings, sculptures, and in the upstairs gallery, a table of tools and objects related to the work.
From the press release-
Internationally renowned for his mastery of painting, Scheibitz subverts traditional notions of the medium with radical juxtapositions of color and a unique formal language that lands ambiguously between abstraction and representation. Drawing from classical painting and architecture, the contemporary urban landscape, and popular culture, Scheibitz deconstructs and recombines signs, images, shapes, and architectural fragments in ways that challenge expected contexts and interpretations.
Scheibitz’s practice has been at the center of contemporary artmaking since the late 1990s with early solo exhibitions at the ICA London, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Berkeley Art Museum, University of California, Berkeley, as well as breakthrough presentations at the German pavilion of the 51st Venice Biennial, MUDAM Luxembourg, Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneva, Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, and more recent major shows at Kunstmuseum Bonn, MMK Frankfurt, and Pablo Picasso x Thomas Scheibitz at the Museum Berggruen, Berlin.
In an age of infinite images and visual information, Argos, the multi-eyed, all-seeing guardian giant of Greek mythology, serves as a kind of avatar for Scheibitz. Like the panopticon-esque figure, the artist’s painting and sculpture absorb and dissolve visual material, encoding and decoding, mapping, measuring, penetrating and exploring a pictorial inventory. For Scheibitz, Argos Eyes are the observers of events and circumstances; that which we see directly, or indirectly via our ubiquitous technological devices, lenses, and screens. For the artist, a picture has always been a summary of different sources of observations and experiences which remain in the mind’s eye like “double exposures”. The eye, or by proxy the lens, is the entrance to the conscious or unconscious processing of what we see or do not see. A fundamental question for the artist remains the philosophical question: do we only see what we already know?
In the main ground floor gallery, Scheibitz presents a dynamic range of painterly compositions and a sculpture. Bringing together selections from his vast lexicon of images, Scheibitz builds up these compositions meticulously yet intuitively, using maquettes, drawings, collage, photography, and sketches. Recognizable forms such as eyes, cubes, droplets, and pyramids are translated into multilayered and complex pictorial structures that urge the viewer to consider multiple perspectives.
In the upstairs galleries, more intimately scaled paintings encircle the room, in addition to an Atlas-like master table filled with models, stencils, and other tools representative of the repeated motifs found in the artist’s studio. This conceptual landscape illustrates the core nature of the work, offering interrelated exercises in form, color, and material.
This exhibition closes 4/18/25.

working on making a 1 inch to a 10th of an inch scale model of my tapestries & I don’t think i’ve ever tie dyed anything this small before, hoping the bottom growth one will turn out bc jfc I had to tie it with sewing thread it was just sooo small, gonna wash it out later
the first one was supposed to be the trans flag but uhhhh for some reason the dye did not wanna penetrate more than the top layer of fabric, I guess it should’ve used more dye? idk but i’m still gonna use it for now just to see how the whole thing will look
the top right was a scrunching attempt and I like how it turned out, making a little cutout of a hand & im gonna paint the hand stencils on it once it’s dry and i’ve ironed it

The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 For A Birthday Tribute to Valentino Rossi
The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 For A Birthday Tribute to Valentino Rossi - Valentino Rossi was actively involved from the very beginning in the design process of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46. He worked closely with BMW M to create two separate design versions that were termed Sport and Style. The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 was titled after the two design variants.  His participation included having an impact on the general color concept, which was influenced by his favorite tones and signature visual style. He also prominently featured his race number 46 in a variety of locations on the vehicle, including the doors and the carbon-fiber roof, among other places.
In honor of Valentino Rossi, a famous nine-time motorcycling world champion and current BMW M works driver, BMW M GmbH presented the rare BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 as a way to commemorate his 46th birthday.  This special edition is a one-of-a-kind combination of high-performance engineering, bespoke workmanship, and personal touches that are inspired by Rossi's legendary racing heritage, including his signature number 46.
Tumblr media
Design of The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46
Between the months of February and May of 2025, the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing was responsible for the production of the M4 CS Edition VR46. This production showcased the combination of large-scale manufacturing efficiency and precise manual craftsmanship.  The production process started with the application of a base primer coat, which was then sanded to improve paint adhesion. This was the first step in the production process.  For the purpose of masking the "46" images and other design features, skilled paint professionals utilized specialized stencils, applying contrasting colors with accuracy.  Following the curing of the paint layers, a clear varnish that was applied by hand was then applied and sanded in order to obtain a faultless surface.  It was the final step in the process to install the carbon-fiber roof, which featured Rossi's autograph and a giant VR46 logo.  This elaborate painting needed approximately twenty hours of specialist labor from a group of four professionals who were committed to their task.
The edition is offered in two unique design versions, namely Sport and Style—each of which is restricted to 46 units, resulting in a total of 92 automobiles being sold all over the world.  The Sport model has a metallic finish in Marina Bay Blue, and it has enormous "46" graphics on the flanks that are in Tanzanite Blue metallic. These graphics are supplemented by brilliant yellow highlights on the kidney grille, brake calipers, and forged M light-alloy wheels.  A matte Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic body and "46" graphics in Frozen Marina Bay Blue metallic are featured on the Style variation, which flips the color scheme over.  Both variants feature exposed carbon surfaces, such as the indents on the bonnet and the top made of carbon fiber, as well as hand-painted sides and other special exterior embellishments that were influenced by Rossi's favored color palette and visual style.
Tumblr media
How was Valentino Rossi personally involved in designing
How did Valentino Rossi personally participate in the design process? Rossi's participation extended to the inside design, which featured Night Blue Alcantara with yellow contrast stitching and VR46 logo, which is reminiscent of his own personal flair.  This tight collaboration guaranteed that the car not only honors his racing pedigree but also expresses his personality and aesthetic preferences, so transforming the M4 CS Edition VR46 into a genuine tribute that was built with his direct participation.
Valentino Rossi's personal input was essential to the design and style choices of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46. This included everything from the paint colors and graphics to the specific detailing both inside and outside the vehicle. The end result was a limited-edition vehicle that embodies both his racing legacy and his individual individuality.
The inside of the M4 CS Edition VR46 maintains the idea with a cabin that is dominated by Night Blue and highlighted by yellow highlights. These highlights include Alcantara shoulder sections on the M Carbon bucket seats and yellow contrast stitching on the steering wheel and seats.  In addition to a numbered plaque on the carbon-fiber center console, the VR46 emblem is prominently featured on the headrests and door sill trims of each vehicle. This serves to emphasize the uniqueness of each individualized vehicle.  In the engine compartment, the vehicle is propelled by a high-revving 3.0-liter inline-six engine that is equipped with M TwinPower Turbo technology. This engine is capable of producing 550 horsepower and is paired with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive.  A top speed of 302 kilometers per hour is electronically capped, and this configuration allows for a sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.4 seconds.
Tumblr media
A Unique Ownership Experience for Rossi
The purchase of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 will provide you with more than just a vehicle; it will also provide you with an experience that is unique and once in a lifetime.  Along with a BMW M Driving Experience at the Misano race circuit, owners are given the opportunity to take part in a personal encounter with Valentino Rossi at his VR46 Motor Ranch in Tavullia, Italy. This provides owners with a very personal connection to the racing great who is responsible for the edition.
In addition to being a high-performance sports car, the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 is also a meticulously designed tribute to the legendary career and unmistakable style of Valentino Rossi.  BMW has designed a limited-edition model that perfectly marries motorsport legacy, exclusivity, and elegance. This model is a great birthday gift and collector's item for fans all around the world because it was made through new manufacturing techniques and Rossi's direct involvement in the design process.
A significant contribution was made by Rossi in the selection of the particular paint finishes for the BMW Individual, as well as the special exterior and interior elements that distinguish this edition from others.  His trademark racing colors are reflected, for instance, in the employment of brilliant yellow highlights on the shape of the kidney grille, brake calipers, and forged M light-alloy wheels. It is a carbon-fiber roof that has been hand-painted and emblazoned with a large VR46 emblem as well as his signature, both of which are elements that Rossi supported particularly.

Get your artwork in for the 2025 Men on Men Art Exhibition
New Post has been published on https://qnews.com.au/get-your-artwork-in-for-the-2025-men-on-men-art-exhibition/
Get your artwork in for the 2025 Men on Men Art Exhibition
There’s still time for you to put in an artwork and enter The Laird’s Men on Men Art Exhibition and Competition for 2025.
The Laird’s annual Men on Men Art Exhibition and Competition returns for another year.
And there is still time for you to put together some artistic work if you would like to be involved.
Submissions include painting, stencil, sculpture, street art, etching, drawing, photography, digital, mixed media, ceramics, needlecraft craft and more.
It’s an opportunity for male and male-identifying artists from all cultures, backgrounds and histories to express themselves no matter their ability.
With less than a week to go before artwork drop off at The Laird in Abbotsford, co-owner Brett Lasham can’t wait to see what this year’s works will be.
“Each year, I love when all the submissions are brought into the pub,” Brett said,
“It’s one thing when we see pictures of people’s work via the online application, but a whole new ball game when we see the art up close.”
Over the years, the exhibition has evolved from works exploring masculinity to something more.
“The theme of Men on Men has evolved, not unlike the legal exemption we have here at the Laird, being a space for cis and trans men who identify as men,” Brett said,
“Looking back on it, we didn’t know as much about what was appropriate with the theme being a celebration of masculinity.”
“We dropped that a few years before we started to embrace trans men who came to the Laird as well and got the legal exemption to recognise that also.”
But what is art?
“I love the way it’s evolved, because this isn’t about a picture of a landscape or a painting of a fruit bowl,” Brett said.
“Since we took over the pub, the artworks have continued to evolve from works about guys who were into guys in the community to expression that speaks to something more.”
“We end up with some amazing and unexpected artworks each year.”
In recent years, the definition of what those artworks are has grown.
“Next year, I need to add some information about clay and 3D artworks, which have grown in creativity.” Brett laughed.
“Last year, someone did a miniature scale model of a local cruising area, it blew us away because it was this tiny recreation of something we all knew.”
“One person is doing a. sculpture as part of this year’s exhibition that I am really excited to see.”
Don’t wait till the last minute.
The response to artwork applications this year has been great, with the artwork drop-off on Wednesday, 28th May.
Brett wants to encourage artists to be sure to fill in the online application and not wait till their work is complete.
“We started using the online application during COVID so we could plan how the works would be displayed in the pub,” Brett said.
“That way, we can plan for the size of some artworks and details like that in advance.
“I say it every year, but I can’t stress this enough: don’t leave the application till the last minute.
“The photo you submit with your application can be a work in progress.
All the artworks are on display at The Laird from Saturday, 31st May until the 29th June.
Kicking off with a gender inclusive open day where all the works are premiered.
“The open day gets bigger and bigger every year,” Brett said,
“And this year, Laird Leatherman 2025 BB will be hosting a BBQ raising funds for his charity.”
“It’s a busy and exciting day that we always look forward to, especially seeing people’s reaction to all the different art.
More than an exhibition.
But the works aren’t just for sale, with all the profits going directly to the artist, there’s also a competition.
The winner of Men on Men receives a $500 Dean’s Art voucher and an exhibition at The Laird during Midsumma the following year.
On the open day, the public votes for the People’s Choice Prize, winning a $250 Dean’s Art voucher and an exhibition at The Laird during Midsumma the following year.
An outstanding photo entry will win the Steve Scalone Photography Prize, created in 2024.
This year, it also comes with a $350 Framed By You voucher, thanks to Roderick Sharpe.
Roderick is a Laird regular and long-time buyer of entries from Men on Men and other exhibitions held at The Laird.
All prize winners are announced during the Mr Australasia Bear Competition during VicBears’ Southern HiBearnation.

The Essential Guide to SMT Equipment in Modern Electronics Manufacturing
Tumblr media
Introduction to SMT Equipment
SMT equipment (Surface Mount Technology equipment) is the backbone of modern electronics manufacturing. As consumer and industrial electronics continue to shrink in size while increasing in complexity, the demand for efficient and precise SMT machinery has grown exponentially. This guide explores the different types of SMT equipment, their functions, and their importance in producing high-quality printed circuit boards (PCBs).
Key Components of SMT Equipment
1. Solder Paste Printing Machines
The first step in the SMT assembly process is applying solder paste to the PCB. Solder paste printers use stencils to deposit precise amounts of solder paste onto the board’s pads. Advanced models feature:
Vision alignment systems for high accuracy
Automatic stencil cleaning to prevent clogging
Real-time inspection to detect printing defects
2. Pick-and-Place Machines
Pick-and-place machines are the most critical SMT equipment in the production line. They accurately place surface-mount components (SMDs) onto the PCB at high speeds. Modern pick-and-place machines offer:
High-speed placement (up to 100,000 components per hour)
Multi-nozzle systems for handling different component sizes
Machine vision systems for precision alignment
3. Reflow Ovens
After component placement, the PCB moves through a reflow oven, where the solder paste melts and forms strong electrical connections. Key features include:
Multiple heating zones for controlled temperature profiles
Nitrogen gas environments to reduce oxidation
Cooling systems to solidify solder joints quickly
4. Inspection and Testing Equipment
Quality control is crucial in SMT manufacturing, and inspection systems ensure defect-free production. Common SMT inspection tools include:
Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) – Detects misaligned or missing components
X-ray Inspection (AXI) – Examines hidden solder joints (e.g., under BGA components)
In-Circuit Testing (ICT) – Verifies electrical functionality
Advancements in SMT Equipment Technology
1. Automation and Industry 4.0 Integration
Modern SMT machines increasingly incorporate IoT (Internet of Things) and AI-driven analytics. Smart factories use real-time data to:
Optimize machine performance
Predict maintenance needs
Reduce downtime
2. Miniaturization and High-Density Assembly
As components shrink (e.g., 01005 resistors, ultra-fine-pitch ICs), SMT equipment must adapt with:
Higher placement accuracy (micrometer-level precision)
Advanced feeders for tiny components
Laser-assisted alignment for micro-BGA and QFN packages
3. Eco-Friendly SMT Solutions
Sustainability is becoming a priority in electronics manufacturing. New SMT machinery developments include:
Lead-free solder paste compatibility
Energy-efficient reflow ovens
Reduced chemical usage in cleaning processes
Choosing the Right SMT Equipment for Your Production Line
Selecting the best SMT machines depends on several factors:
1. Production Volume
Low to medium volume: Semi-automatic or benchtop SMT equipment
High volume: Fully automated high-speed pick-and-place and conveyor-based systems
2. Component Complexity
Standard SMDs: Basic pick-and-place machines
Advanced packages (e.g., PoP, SiP): Machines with 3D vision and multi-stage placement
3. Budget and ROI Considerations
Entry-level machines for startups
Mid-range systems for growing manufacturers
High-end solutions for large-scale production
Future Trends in SMT Equipment
The SMT industry continues to evolve with emerging technologies:
1. AI-Driven Process Optimization
Machine learning algorithms analyze production data to improve yield and reduce errors.
2. Hybrid SMT-THR Systems
Combining Surface Mount Technology (SMT) and Through-Hole Technology (THT) in a single line for flexible manufacturing.
3. 3D Printed Electronics Integration
Future SMT machines may incorporate additive manufacturing for customized PCB designs.
Conclusion
SMT equipment is essential for producing reliable and compact electronic devices. From solder paste printers to high-speed pick-and-place machines and inspection systems, each component plays a vital role in ensuring efficiency and quality. As technology advances, SMT machinery will continue to push the boundaries of precision, speed, and sustainability in electronics manufacturing.
By understanding the different types of SMT equipment and their applications, manufacturers can optimize their production lines for better performance and competitiveness in the fast-evolving electronics industry.

For this post, I wanted to do some further research to aid in my texturing process. I aim to find common trends and similarities across the age-related wear and tear of buildings. This will also form part of my wider world research set out in my targets from my 1-1 session with Chris.
Hurricane Katrina
The first thing I wanted to look at was Hurricane Katrina. I think this will provide me with a great insight into the destruction and damage that comes with extreme weather, and in its own way, can partially represent a sped-up weathering process.
When I first took a look into the tragic event of Hurricane Katrina, I was shocked by the sheer scale of devastation it caused. The hurricane struck on August 29th 2005 as a Category 3 storm, with winds speeds that reached between 100–140 mph which stretched 400 miles across. The storm surge (which rose up to 27 feet in some areas) overwhelmed dykes and floodwalls which lead to catastrophic flooding with the New Orleans being one of the most affected areas. I found that approximately 80% of the city was submerged which is just a horrifying thought. This resulted in damages estimated at $108 billion, making it the costliest hurricane in USA history.
Tumblr media
I found that the types of damage to buildings were large and varied:Structural Damage: The force of the storm surge and flooding led to the collapse of numerous homes, especially in low-lying areas. Many structures were completely wiped out by the 12 foot storm surge and others were missing huge parts of their buildings. I think this is also a very good key point to consider with my house as the top part of the house is not submerged while the lower half is. This in theory, means that there should be more damage and mold focussed towards the bottom of the house over the top half. Water Damage: Prolonged submersion caused severe water damage to building materials, leading to mold growth and structural weakening. Many homes were deemed uninhabitable due to the extent of water damage. This is quite an interesting point here because if you think about how "short" of a time the buildings were submerged for and for mold to start growing just like that, I think I should be aiming to show more mold in my own model as its supposed to have been sitting around not looked after for years. Wind Damage: I found that the high winds shattered windows and tore off roofs. As an example I found, the Hyatt Regency New Orleans had all its windows blown out, allowing water and debris to enter the guest rooms and atrium lobby.
Tumblr media
Infrastructure Damage: Lastly the other main area of damage was Critical infrastructure, which includes things like roads and bridges. The I-10 Twin Span Bridge collapsed, and major roads were rendered unusable which ended up complicating a lot of the rescue and recovery efforts.
Tumblr media
^ theres just something about the collasped I-10 Twin Span Bridge that just sends chills down my spine!
Lastly I wanted to create a moodboard of the damage to use as a reference for my texture painting later:

Boucning off of what I've just looked at, Chris gave me a really interesting book to look into called "After the Flood". It is a photographic documentation by Canadian-American photographer Robert Polidori, published by Steidl in 2006. The book captures the freighting aftermath and devisation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
Tumblr media
Here are some of the shots from the book that I find most interesting:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next source I wanted to look at is Joshua Smith. He is a miniaturist and a former stencil artist based in Norwood, South Australia. His career spans over 20 years, he has showcased his work in London, Paris, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and all over Australia in over 100 exhibitions. To sum up what a miniaturist is, it is someone who creates dioramas, tiny sculptures, scale models or miniature scenes which can be everything from realistic tiny food to entire building. I really like a few particular models of his as I think they share some really big relevance to my own route when it comes to the "ageing" and "wear and tear" of buildings with time. This first piece I really like is "23 Temple Street", its based on 23 Temple Street in Kowloon, Hong Kong. I did a little analysis seen below of all the interesting points I have taken away from his design.
Tumblr media
The other piece I also really liked was "Liberated X". It is based on Liberated X Bookshop and Shoe Repairs on Flinders Street in Melbourne. Here is a little analysis I created for it:
Tumblr media
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lastly, I wanted to look towards a more recent event, the LA Fires. In January 2025, Los Angeles experienced a series of deadly wildfires, making for one of the most devastating fire events in California's history. The Fire ignited on January 7th 2025 which rapidly spread due to the extreme wind conditions. It covered over 23,000 acres of land which makes it the third most destructive wildfire in California's history. The fire unfortunately resulted in 12 fatalities and the destruction of numerous structures, including the 102 year old Community United Methodist Church of Pacific Palisades. Overall, the January wildfires led to the destruction of nearly 17,000 structures and made for the evacuation of over 200,000 residents. This really was one of the most tragic and deadly natural events I have witnessed in a long time. A key part of this I can take away is the sheer amount of damage it caused to these buidlings the fire went through, leaving barely anything in its tracks. I want to maybe try to better represent how extreme heat can effect buildings in my texturing ensuring that I show how the paint and raw wood peels with time and UV exposure.

Practical work research -
As I started to look into projection/installation art in a fairly commercial sense I thought I should maybe look into the sustainability side and environmental impact.
Obviously I was aware that projectors require a level of energy usage which may have negative environmental impacts. However, I did discover that laser projections are more commonly used today.
As oppose to lamp projectors, laser projectors consume "a fraction of the energy of lamp projectors".
Projection has previously seen the upkeep of "large inventories of parts, scheduling downtime for maintenance, and disposing of waste. Today, many DLP projectors feature airtight optical blocks and refined cooling systems that prevent dust ingress without the need for filters. Not only does this reduce waste and maintenance but it also enhances reliability in continuous applications."
Newer laser projectors have also shrunk to a much smaller scale with some models dramatically reduced to around 40% smaller than previous lamp projectors. This making them easier to transport and install and therefore improving the products sustainability.
Their decrease in size is also said to reduce the time, 'energy and cost of system renewal.'
Newer laser projection also remove the use of some harmful/toxic substances that can often be found in lamp projectors e.g mercury used in lamps requires a special disposal which can be extra hassle and harmful if not handled correctly.
The continuing research and progression of the technology of laser projectors ensures there is a sustainable future for projection art and design.
I also saw that often interactive installations can be used to mirror wildlife settings that aren't easily accessible the idea of 'Stimulating the real thing'. For example, immersing in rare jungle installation settings, or even underwater like settings. These allowing people to enjoy such environments without undergoing the sometimes invasive process of such excursions.
Tumblr media
I began thinking of ways in which I can practice with projection work and work with a similar look to Jenny Holzer's work, however, with slightly more limited resources and spaces. I thought about shadow work. I feel as though this would give off similar look to Jenny Holzer's work however, can be done completely sustainably and really, anywhere with a light source.
Shadow art is a method of using obstacles intercepting a light source to cast shadows on to a surface. It is a concept that I and most have probably been introduced to from a young age, casting shadow puppets through shapes made with hands and parts of the body. I thought of ways that I could cast specific shapes onto a blank wall and this is where I considered making my own stencils.
I began this experimental process by selecting specific words and messages that I wanted to create. I thought back to my selected research themes that I had shown much interest in and considered words/phrases that could encapsulate a variety of such undertones.
I considered words that may be considered political and this made me think of a more feminist approach. I immediately thought of the world 'Smile". There is a common story shared amongst women that they are often told to 'smile', and it draws on this outdated idea that women are performative beings that are made to look stereotypically feminine; warm and welcoming at all times. I started to look further into this word from a feminist gaze and saw the discussion of the word now being contorted to contribute to the "pressure on girls to be fun, happy and smiling" and is said to "reveal much about the cultural expectations projected onto girls and girlhood.". It relates also to the notion that women and girls should not counteract societal expectations and should simply conform. Though you may usually associate the word smile with happier and more positive connotations, there is this double meaning to it now, especially from a women's perspective. A study in 2019 showed that 98% of the women asked, had been asked or told to smile in various environments, from workplaces, in homes, and on the street. I think this word, therefore, was a nice example to start with as it had an imperative political tone, much like that of Holzer or Kruger's language.
I chose another phrase to work with as I wanted to experiment with not just a singular word but a phrase. I think this takes more inspiration from artists like Holzer as she usually uses sentences and longer pieces of literature within her work. Though this would be more time consuming and slightly more difficult due to the resources I had available I still wanted to experiment further. I again thought back to the themes of interest that I had expressed towards the start of the project. I wondered how I could link back to my interests in music and so started to brainstorm artists that I know, that write with profound ideas or political undertones, to their music. I considered artists such as:
Sam Fender - Sam Fender is an English singer songwriter. His music explores themes such as; social injustices, privilege, relationships. He often writes exploring the 'coming of age' idea and the challenges he and young people face, commenting on the "celebration of surviving" . As well as music with more political undertones such as "White Privilege" which from the offset has a serious political tone and throughout explores him highlighting injustices within our society. He writes with a strong poetic tone which I think helps the audience connect better with the music.
Spit of you - Discussed the relationship between boys and their father's. How there can be a difficulty in communicating and boundaries that have been constructed due to outdated ideals of how men can and can't act. " I can talk to anyone... Can't talk to you".
Dead boys - This song discusses male suicide, and was inspired by the unfortunate passing of a close friend to him. The lyrics are so powerful and allow conversation and a level of understanding of suicide. It was reported that after hearing a radio chat show, it actually saved a man from committing suicide, rather that driving his car off the road, the listener instead drove home to his wife and children and confessed to her that he needed help.
Declan McKenna - When considering political notes in music I also thought back to Declan McKenna. He wrote a song called 'British Bombs'. He spoke of the song once newly released stating “’British Bombs’ is a tune [he] wrote about the hypocrisy of the British arms trade and the weapons convention in London." he explained that he wanted to create a song that was outright against war and expressed his belief that he, doesn't think that the "world is too complex to set a peaceful precedent, but it seems the business of war is what keeps happening.". The entire songs discusses the British involvement in wars and wars oversees and the unfortunate ongoing contribution in these circumstances from the British side. The song captures his passion towards the subject, he sings with such effort and even begins the bridge of the song completely shouting the verse, which highlights this desperation and passion behind the sentiments of the music. You can also see a clear idea of politics in his work in the song listen to you friends. Here you'll find the whole bridge of the song shows him competing on today's society, and almost ridiculing the systems in which we live in and have little control over. Many of these political glimpses in his music show a almost a satyrical tone, which I think is how he manages to work such strong beliefs into his music without branding himself as a 'actual' political figure/activist.
A verse from 'British Bombs"
It's a good old fashioned landslide Killing with your hands tied In the homemade rope Set sail babe we read it in the mail - no hope now
It's a total fucking whitewash For the people that we might squash Ammo from home soil Set sail for wherever the fuck got oil this time
Fontaines DC - Fontaines D.C are an Irish post-punk band formed of Grian Chatten, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan III, Tom Coll and Carlos O'Connell. The band formed while studying at music school and allegedly bonded over their common love for poetry. This seems very relevant to their song lyrics, paired with their actual sound they create such great atmospheres and vivid imagery. I thought about their recent album release "Romance" . The sound of the new album was unpredicted and feels completely cinematic. The first songs that I had interacted with from the album were the first releases, 'Starburster' and 'Favourite'. Starburster was a song inspired by a panic attack that frontman Grian Chatten had experienced on the London Underground. It actually uses exaggerated breathe breaks, which I initially thought was just an interesting way to break the song and the flow of poetry that he sings with, however, it is interesting that it actually was inspired by something so real and so relatable. I have always had an affinity double/deeper meanings to things, whether that be art, poetry or music. This exploration of different outcomes, in an analytical sense, is something that I enjoy and so learning more about this album was very interesting to me. The actual motivation behind the album intrigued me most. In an interview with NME (At home with Fontaines D.C Grian Chatten: "Our personality is bigger than the sound that we make") Chatten explains where this new sound that they explored came from. He says "To be creatively understood by too many people feels like flies settling all over your clothes... you have to shake them off to see who you are again". This idea of rediscovering and rebranding as a form of growth and development for the band was interesting and, one of the reasons, I think, that this new album has done so well.
He discusses how when collaborating and creating their music the band often discusses the "weather" of the song. Which I think makes so much sense when listening to the album as the songs have such depth and create such atmospheres. Ranging from "Favourite" that has a sunny nostalgic reassuring feel to it, to the albums opening song "Romance" which is much darker and quite eerie.
I began to consider the lyrics within the songs that I could use for my work and the first that really stood out to me was from 'Starburster'. It was a phrase used in the chorus and so appears frequently throughout that song and that is "momentary blissness". Understanding that the song was inspired by a panic attack, it could simply relate back to these interrupting breath breaks, where as in a panic attack these breaths may ground the person and help them overcome the panic attack. However, I feel as though the phrase alone holds such a variety of feelings and meanings. The actual breakdown of the phrase shows quite a bittersweet pairing. This idea of "blissness" obviously having such positive connotations of happiness and serenity, compared to this "momentary" timeline creates this fleeting feeling. This idea that happiness is fleeting again could be taken in a positive way, in that you should appreciate and enjoy happiness whenever encountered. However, it also holds this bittersweetness of happy moments passing by, and potentially being missed, rather than lasting.
I considered how these words may look projected and thought that this poetic undertone and multi-definition functionality of the phrase was something that I would like to see. It also coincides with the notions of Holzer's wildly popular literature and choice of wording.
youtube
Key quotes from the above interview:
"To be creatively understood by too many people feels like flies settling all over your clothes.... you have to shake them off to see who you are again"
Discussing the new album and the different sound that they have created, in comparison to the previous three, all of a fairly similar sound.
This "inimitable" product they've created, the same word used to describe Holzer's work.
" A million people passing by and not seeing each other in their own world"
Talking about the 'touch points' in their music and how it's inspired by people in everyday, the business of life.
"Cyberpunk"
The kind of style and theme of their music that they've created with this music. Transgressing from typical punk music with this modern approach, it feels like bringing traditional punk into the modern age.

Shirt Printing Machines: A Complete Guide to Apparel Customization
Shirt printing machines are essential tools in the garment industry, used to transfer designs, logos, or text onto apparel. Whether for personal use, small businesses, or large-scale operations, these machines offer a range of printing techniques to suit different needs. From crafting personalized t-shirts to producing branded uniforms, shirt printing machines provide endless possibilities for customization.
This article explores the types of shirt printing machines, their advantages, and how to choose the best one for your requirements.
What is a Shirt Printing Machine?
A shirt printing machine is a device used to imprint designs onto fabrics, typically shirts. These machines use various methods to apply ink or other materials to textiles, allowing for both small-scale and mass production of custom apparel. Different machines cater to various fabric types, design complexities, and production volumes.
Types of Shirt Printing Machines
Screen Printing Machines
Overview: Screen printing is a traditional and widely-used method that involves pressing ink through a mesh stencil (or screen) onto the fabric.
Advantages: Best for bulk orders with simple designs. It offers vibrant colors and long-lasting prints.
Disadvantages: Requires separate screens for each color, making it less efficient for multi-colored or detailed designs. Setup can be time-consuming.
Direct-to-Garment (DTG) Printers
Overview: DTG printing works similarly to a standard inkjet printer but prints directly onto the fabric. This method excels at producing detailed, full-color designs.
Advantages: Ideal for complex, high-resolution designs and smaller print runs. No need for screens or lengthy setup.
Disadvantages: Slower than screen printing for large volumes. It can be expensive to maintain and requires pretreatment of fabrics.
Heat Press Machines
Overview: Heat press machines use heat and pressure to transfer designs onto shirts. Designs are typically printed on transfer paper or vinyl, then pressed onto the fabric.
Advantages: Versatile and relatively easy to use. Suitable for custom, small-batch orders, and a wide variety of materials.
Disadvantages: Limited design flexibility, as it may not be as durable as screen printing or DTG for certain types of fabrics or frequent washing.
Sublimation Printers
Overview: Sublimation printing turns dye into gas, which bonds with the fibers of the fabric, resulting in vibrant, long-lasting prints. This method is best for polyester or specially-coated fabrics.
Advantages: Excellent for full-color images, high detail, and durable prints. The design becomes part of the fabric, so it doesn’t fade or peel.
Disadvantages: Limited to light-colored polyester fabrics or coated substrates. It may not be suitable for cotton shirts.
Vinyl Cutting Machines
Overview: Vinyl cutters are used to cut out designs from vinyl sheets, which are then heat-pressed onto shirts. Often used for logos, numbers, and simple graphics.
Advantages: Durable, great for custom lettering and simple, single-color designs. Perfect for creating sports jerseys and personalized items.
Disadvantages: Limited to one color per layer, and complex or multi-colored designs require multiple layers of vinyl.
Benefits of Shirt Printing Machines
Customization and Personalization
Shirt printing machines enable businesses and individuals to create unique and custom apparel. Whether for promotional merchandise, sports teams, or personal projects, these machines allow for complete creative freedom.
Cost-Effective Production
With the ability to print on-demand, shirt printing machines reduce the need for large inventory. This on-demand production model minimizes waste and lowers costs, especially for small businesses or independent creators.
