hey are you a conclave fan ?? don't understand all the stuff the cardinals are wearing ?? want to write about them celebrating mass but don't know what they wear ?? want to know more about snazzy catholic fashion ?? worry no longer !!

procrastinating hard on writing my own fic so i started researching clerical clothing because i love symbolism and fashion, here are the fruits of my labour. i'm not catholic nor was i raised one so sorry for any inaccuracies, at the end of the day this is just to help people write fic. if you see any spelling mistakes though no you didn't.

i tried to include anything that might help or inspire people, including for aus or just playing dress up with old men. hope its of use !!! this took me a really long time please clap

also i cannot be bothered to change it but on the liturgical 2 page, in the part about ferulas i keep mentioning pius xi. its actually pius ix.

FIRST PAGE

CARDINALS: everyday wear -> main colour is red, symbolising the blood they are willing to shed for christ.

zuchetto: scarlet watered silk skullcap

cassock: black wool with red silk piping. 33 buttons for the 33 years that christ lived. sometimes called a soutane, or if the pellegrina is attatched, a simar.

this weird second sleeve thing isn't in the movie design.

fascia scarlet watered silk sash with tassels. symbolises celibacy (wide eyed emoji). optional but almost always worn.

pectoral cross: personalised cross suspended from a chain over the chest.

gold ring: gifted by the pope to symbolise the bond with the papacy.

its hard to see, but the inside of the cassock and pellegrina is also red

pellegrina: optional elbow length cape that matches the cassock. these don't typically have buttons, but in the movie they do. they're also slightly longer in the movie.

clerical collar: white plastic, cotton, or linen collar. in the movie design, there is no slot for the collar in the front.

CARDINALS: choir dress

cassock and fascia: the same as everyday dress except that the cassock is red and not black.

rochet: white linen or muslin tunic, usually with a lace trim. designs of the lace vary from person to person. rochets are very different in the movie - with the exception of benitez, all the rochets are the same. they all reach to the mid-calf rather than the mid-thigh or knee. they're very plain, with no lace trim or other designs.

biretta: square, ridged cap worn over the zuchetto. one corner has no ridge, and is always worn on the left. not actually worn in the movie, but you can see it on the way to and in the sistine chapel.

cappa magna: long as fuck red watered silk cape with a 7 metre long train. hood is lined with ermine fur in the winter. rarely worn in modern times, and only in processions. like the galero, generally only the traditionalists care for it.

galero: scarlet wide brimmed hat with 15 tassels attached at the sides. used to be given by the pope to every newly created cardinal, but is no only made on request. the only example i can find of a modern day cardinal wearing a galero is cardinal burke, who is a mega traditionalist/conservative freak. a galero is still featured on the cardinal coat of arms however.

much longer, more simplistic rochet with a big as fuck hem. it's also slightly off white?

like in the book, benitez' rochet is too long, reaching to the bottom of his cassock. it also has a more "realistic" trim design. unlike the rest of the cardinals it seems to be pure white (hello symbolism).

POPE -> main colour is white to symbolise purity

unlike the rest of the catholic clergy, the pope's dress isn't strictly regulated. what each pope wears varies and usually reflects their own views - e.g. pope benedict xvi wore a lot of clothes that had fallen out of use in the papacy, while pope francis refused to wear a lot of the more ornate clothing (basically, you can do what you want).

base everyday wear is the same as cardinals a bishops, but all white. always a simar.

pope's loafers are traditionally red to represent the blood of saints, but both francis and leo instead have black shoes.

ring of the fisherman/piscatory ring customised to each pope. usually gold (francis' is gold plated silver), with an engraving of saint peter. the fisherman part is a reference to mathew 4:19 and mark 1:17, where jesus tells saint peter and the apostle andrew that he will make them "fishers of men". presented to the pope during his inauguration (there's only been 5 inaugurations - i can't find who presented the ring for john paul i & ii, but both benedict xvi and francis had it presented by the dean of the college of cardinals (i.e. lawrence). leo xiv of course had cardinal tagle, who isn't dean - the rules for papal inaugurations are quite vague so each individual pope does whatever. in the days of papal coronations the ring would be presented by the camerlengo (i.e. tremblay)

you can see lawrence don the following before his "pope who doubts" homily. each item has an attached prayer that should be recited while putting it on. worn over the cassock and fascia. before they even start dressing, the priest/bishop/etc washes their hands. benedict xvi briefly introduced a papal pallium with red crosses, but francis eventually switched back to a black one, with leo xiv doing the same.

benedict xvi also reintroduced the papal fanon, a gold striped circular shawl, though it hasn't been used since then.

instead of a crozier, the pope uses a ferula, a staff with a cross on top. there have been a lot of different designs for the ferula, with the most recently used being the ferulas of pius xi, paul vi, and benedict xvi.

the colours of the maniple, stole, and chasuble varies depending on the event. only the main events are listed below because theres a lot <3

green - ordinary time (i.e. nothing else going on). [grey text] hope, growth, life. [end grey text]

violet - advent, lent, all souls day, requiem mass (funerals). [grey text] humility, penance, preparation. [end grey text]

BISHOPS, ARCHBISHOPS, & MONSIGNORI

bishops and archbishops wear basically the same as cardinals, except with purple instead of red (symbolising authority i think? not as well defined as cardinal red) plus some other details.

this includes accessories like the ferraiolo. galero specifically is green with two sets of 6 tassels for bishops and 10 for archbishops.

ok so researching for monsignori is driving me up the wall. first of all mons. is not an actual role, it's an address for priests with one of 3 honourary titles (apostolistic protonotary, honourary prelate, chaplain of his holiness). second, mons. o'malley is a bishop in all but title. he dresses as a bishop, and is secretary to the dean, a role typically held by a bishop. idk man ig in the conclave-verse bishops can be monsignori, or maybe a monsignor is higher up in the catholic hierarchy than irl.

when to wear what:

liturgical vestments -> celebrating/co-celebrating the eucharist.

choir dress -> public liturgical functions that the person is not the celebrant of.

daily dress -> day to day work

informal dress -> can be worn when daily dress would be impractical, in more informal work, or when "off-duty". black or grey clothes, including a shirt that allows the priest's collar to be seen.

as for what they wear under their cassocks, i think it's just a shirt and trousers. you can see the sleeves peaking out in the movie. the only real rule is that the stockings/socks they wear should match their cassock (i.e. black in everyday, red/purple in choir dress, white for the pope). only other thing of not is that the pope typically wears white trousers, though francis wore black. anyways, [homophobic dog "i know what you are" meme]

Danny realized, just as dawn was lighting up the world around him, that he knew almost nothing about the world outside of the USA. Even Canada and Mexico were barely footnotes outside of a chapter or two throughout all of his schooling! So, he landed just as a city came into view, let himself warmup with the release of his ghostly transformation, and pulled out his phone to figure out where the hell he was.

With barely any reception, Danny found himself to be just outside Monterrey, Mexico.

"Monterrey, Mexico, the capitol city of Nuevo León, boasts a sprawling business and industrial center. Spanning 125.3 square miles (324.8 squared kilometers), the city is home to ~5,341,177 people. The city is just over 428 years old, having been founded in the 16th century. It was early morning, but the streets were already coming to life with music and voices. Suddenly, the tiny little world Danny'd been trapped in his whole life seemed so dim.

Everything was more beautiful than he'd ever noticed before. Brighter, more colorful, more musical.

Was this what Dani saw every time she left Amity? Was this how she always saw the world? He could see the appeal.

The brand new sights and smells and sounds overwhelmed him as the sun rose higher in the sky, but he couldn't find it in himself to care. It was almost the same kind of overwhelming feeling he got when he thought about space; good and begging for him to feed it.

He walked on, passing hundreds of people all speaking a language he didn't know-

Ah. He'd better pick up on it fast. It'd be rude to demand they speak his language in their home, right?

He pulled out his phone and took a quick selfie to send to Jazz, unable to stop his grin.

"It's so colorful," he told her, "I can see why Dani likes it so much out here."

She didn't respond, but he didn't expect her to. Not for a while, at least.

He texted Dani next. The same picture, though all he said was "Monterrey, Mexico."

Dani answered before he could even put his phone back in his bag. She, too, had send a selfie captioned, "Cobán, Guatemala, bitch!"

He laughed.

There was a chuckle behind him. "Un turista, ¿no?"

He turned around, suddenly re-kicking himself for not taking Spanish in school. Putting on his most apologetic expression, he said, "I'm sorry, I don't-"

The person laughed, wiping a fake tear from their eye. "Don't worry about it," they said in heavily accented English, "You're a long way from home."

He nodded. "A bit, yeah."

"You're not from a big city, are you?" It wasn't a question.

"How'd you know?"

"Stopping in the middle of the street is a good way to get jumped in any city, mi amigo." Danny shifted into a defensive stance, wary of the stranger. They laughed again. "Don't worry about me, I won't hurt you." He didn't believe them. they stuck their hand out. "Me llamo Alejandro."

He relaxed minutely. "Danny."

"Short for Daniel?"

"Just Danny."

They backed up some, their hands up. "I get it, man. What brings you to mi hermosa ciudad?"

"My reasons are my own."

"A fugitivo, got it."

"I'm not-"

"Relax! I'm not gonna turn you in. That's too much work. Besides, I know lots 'a guys like you. Not many stay in the city, but a lot of 'em start out here."

"Really?"

"More than you'd think."

Danny hummed. Then, he had an idea. "Could you teach me Spanish?"

Alejandro raised an eyebrow. "What happened to not trusting me?"

He blushed just a little and looked away, "Well, I don't want to not be able to understand anyone while I'm here, and you seem pretty friendly."

Alejandro shook their head with a smirk. "Way too trusting. Sure, I'll teach you, come on."

Danny followed after them, weaving between people and not running into a single person. Alejandro was all skill while Danny used a bit of intangibility.

Instead of taking him somewhere they could teach and learn in peace, as Danny had expected, Alejandro lead him through the city, giving a detailed tour of everything in the way only a local who loved their city more than anything could do. They knew every part of the city, every person seemed to know them, though they didn't so much as exchange a wave. A few kids stopped them and they played basketball in a park for a while before moving on.

Eventually, the day had to come to an end. As the sun was setting over the mountains, Alejandro lead Danny to a group of houses just on the playground, a bit more rundown with use.

"It's refreshing to see someone so full of childlike wonder when I show them mi hogar for the first time," they said, "Don't ever lose that, okay? Don't let anyone ever take that away from you, okay?"

There was a desperation in their tone, hidden, but loud enough to speak volumes of something that Danny wasn't privileged to know about. "Okay."

They sighed like something heavy had been lifted off their shoulders. "Good, good." They straightened up. "Now, for your Spanish lesson. By the time I'm done with you, you'll be speaking like it's your first language!"

The gleam in their eye reminded Danny of Sam when she was gearing up to explain the current activist page she was deep-diving; of Tucker when he was explaining the newest upgrade to his PDA; of Jazz when she was psychoanalyzing everyone in sight. It made him homesick.

He promised to have the language perfected before he left this city.

I really appreciate the beauty of Malleus New Year's card. But most importantly, other than its gorgeousness, I also appreciate how it pays so much homage to his status and character, from the flowers, the clothes, and the setting. 🥹

We know that wisterias were prevalent in his Dorm Groovy SSR, this time its another flower which is the red plum blossom here😭❤️

In Chinese philosophy, the Plum tree’s blossom is a symbol of winter ending and a herald of spring. The tree’s pale pink blossoms are cherished because they bloom vibrantly and so bravely amidst the winter chill. They symbolise perseverance and hope, as well as, beauty thriving in adverse circumstances.

The way this flower's meaning is so matched with Malleus' character is so precious. We know he's "the herald of spring" because his birth brought forth a hope that the Draconias(or the faes in general) won't die out just yet (the ending of winter) and the fact that this flower blooms even in winter probably symbolizes the fact that when he was an egg, he was still perservering to live. This also applies to his life as he grows up. With the way even if his life is riddled with loneliness and exclusion, he makes an effort to go out and adjust himself with others, he doesn't give up even if his reality consistently places him in situation where his goals can never be achieved (that is, him being accepted socially and him being ignorant of human culture but still makes an effort to understand it), he just continues to be hopeful that someone/ some place will invite him, therefore his ability to thrive in adverse circumstances.

The way he slowly rises in this card makes me feel like it symbolizes how slow paced Malleus is "in going out/getting used to outside of his comfort zone", actually lol. He described his admission to NRC as him being nervous because its an unknown place but still hopeful for the experiences that he might get(acccording to the vignette of his GloMas SSR), just like him here rising from the snow and the way he lifts the veil which makes me think he wants to see the world outside of his country's point of view with his own eyes.

Japanese tradition holds that the Plum (or ‘ume’) is celebrated as a protective charm against evil, so the ume is traditionally planted in the northeast of the garden, the direction from which evil is believed to come.

I also read this symbolism which makes me tear up lmaooo 😭Because we know in Book 7, Briarland was invaded from northeast where the Silver Owls originated from 💀 The fact that the plum blossom is a protection flower and he's surrounded with it in this card makes me think that it symbolizes how protected he was during Briarland's era 😭and another thing to dissect from his slow rise from the snow with the fact the plum blossom signifies protection is probably the fact that he took so long to hatch despite many people caring for him.

Side note that in Malleus Bloom Birthday Groovy, it implied that he was born in daytime during a snowfall, and he was happy experiencing the winter, just like in this New Years card where he's smiling against the heavy snowfall 🥹

In Japan, plum blossoms symbolize good fortune, an auspicious flower, along with pine and bamboo, and the arrival of early spring. They are often used as the design for New Year’s greeting cards and other celebratory occasions. (And maybe this is just the likely reason why this flower is here in Malleus' card and I'm overthinking it above lol

Next thing I want to mention is his clothes, that attire reminds me of the formal outfit of a Japanese Emperor (From what I searched, its called sokutai, but what Malleus wears is much more simpler I guess, its a outfit derived from it which is called ikan.) This post is a great overview about these two outfits.

Ikan is the work clothes of nobles and government officials in the Imperial Court after the Heian period. Sokutai is a formal costume for those from the Emperor to the court nobles in and after Heian period (Heian costume). Ikan is called 'tonoi (nighttime) costume', whereas sokutai is called 'hino (daytime) costume'. (which probably references the fact that he's a night fae)

The point is, what Malleus wears in this card is a very traditional garment that only high ranking Japanese officials can wear. But what he wears isn't the clothes of an emperor yet, but just for a high ranking official, which is accurate to his status that he's still a crown prince not yet the king, because only Maleficia truly rules Briar Valley right now.

I love the decision that they made him wear such a prestigious outfit because the story of the New Years event is the characters working on customer service lol Its like his clothes is a reminder that he is still highly distinguished even if temporarily he's a worker.

Lastly the VEIL !!!!!! That's the thing that catched my eyes the most in this card lol I KNOW they're not referencing a wedding here because the veil don't look the same, but its so good not to mention that the one of the headress of a Japanese bride is called tsunokakushi and its description can be related with Malleus a lot lol.

The term is a compound of 角 (tsuno, "horn") + 隠し (kakushi, "hiding"). This derivation is listed in some sources as a reference to hiding a bride's "horns" of anger, jealousy, or other negative qualities, in order to present a more virtuous image for the wedding. However, this interpretation might be a folk etymology resulting from a shift in the reading and meaning.

The headdress and the veil aren't the same thing but I kinda feel like this is the idea they're going for considering the veil is 1) hiding his horns, 2) he's a character associated with being jealous, and most importantly, 3) only the person he is looking at can see his face (which is the point of most wedding veils/headdress, to hide the bride's face so that only her partner can see it).

But long veils, like the one Malleus is holding is also just a garment for a noble to hide their nobility. Which is this is probably the likely reason, considering he's using that veil to cover up his horns and his clothes, the most obvious features of his status.

Also, it could be just a fun reference to the fact that Maleficent in live action wore a long veil to hide her horns so that she wouldn't scare the humans lol
