So I have recently read a A Blessing and A Curse by @Hogwarts_Riddle on Ao3 and have fallen in love with the fic, so here is some fan art because I weak for pastel!JC and this fanfic!

really can't stop thinking about how awesome the jiang's and wwx could've been as both a family unit, and powerhouses in the cultivation and political world if only yu ziyuan and jiang fengmian were healthy people

Absolutely insane to me that anyone either in universe or irl believes anything the main wen clan says.

We see from the very beginning in every adaptation that their modus operandi, nay, their way of life, is to lie, threaten and bribe people into doing their dirty work for them (you see this even easier in untamed).

Their favourite thing in the whole world is to make other people look bad, ESPECIALLY when they get a scapegoat out of it.

This is one of the ways the jin clan at the time follow in their footsteps - they capitalise on wwx as the pre prepared scapegoate they can blame and use to sow doubt, discord, distrust. They use the exact same tactic to remove a perceived threat on wwx as the wen remnants, mxy, even jrl - isolate them, make their word untrustworthy, assert themselves as the Righteous and Generous side in the process. But not without rubbing everyone else the wrong way just to make double sure they uncover anyone willing to stand against them!

The main issue here is, of course, the burning of lotus pier. First of all, wwx had no part in the physical actions the wens took, just to get the most obvious out of the way. Secondly, gusu burned first. That had absolutely zero to do with wwx or any rising rebellion - it happened before the indoctrination! (Side note, I can't believe that's how it gets translated when that's the biggest possible red flag term to use. It's genuinely insane when the clans remain complacent as they toss that word around and prepare to send their kids to it. At least pick, like, Education or Examination or something with plausibly less brainwashing cult kidnapping energy.)

Anyway. The wens chose their targets well. Gusu burns first: it is the best connected, hosting the lectures, it is the biggest repository of knowledge in the entire jianghu (including assassination techniques!!), it has two rising stars, one set to take up the role of new (and thus more alert and proactive). It's got the weakest actual sect leader by far. It's also, perhaps, the most isolated. None of the other clans are aware it's been utterly decimated by the time of the indoctrination.

Then it's either the Nie, already partially crippled with the previous sect leader already killed by wrh, leaving a child to fill the boots with no parents, no previous instruction, an infant brother and no elders. They're prone to deviation exacerbated by resentment (which human battlefields are FULL of) (though they can be helped by, you guessed it! Lan techniques, whom they've just burned all of). They have no rising star, their heir is famously useless. Or the Jin, the most closely allied major clan, with immense wealth but little actual stake in the war as long as they themselves aren't targeted. You'll remember it's the sect heir who finally drags his men onto the field. The jianghus whore is too busy coddling up to and yes manning the wen to be of any concern.

This just leaves the jiang. A strong and powerful great sect filled with dangerous, head strong warriors. I'm explicitly including yzy in this, who is a harsh taskmaster who continues taking night hunts into marriage and motherhood to keep her wit and skills sharp. The daughters engagement with the jin is cancelled, which means they won't alienate the jin by attacking. The father is both alive and active, capable and willing to actually run the sect and lead it into battle with the wen (or at the very least his wife is practically chomping at the bit). It's got two rising stars glued to each other's hip, one of which is the heir and the other the brightest, most troublemaking, most ready to throw hands in the name of justice in his whole generation. Their people are wealthy and loyal.

Oh, and also, they basically own the waterways. I'm not sure if it's explicitly canon, but they are the sect most connected to the rivers that (canonically, remember the waterborne abyss?) run between at least three of Great sects, including (drumroll please) the very first sect they just burned to the ground and are notably keeping surpressed (wen chao, at the very least should have bragged incessantly to everyone who looked at him, never mind his captive and isolated audience), and the wens themselves!! Lotus pier basically borders to its town, which is very clearly thriving af. It's loud, it's colourful, it's exotic, it's getting so much trade it's not even funny. The jiang are so much more experienced in water and water enemies (remember wwx noticing lwjs weird boat waterline?) than even gusus heir and spare! They are trade, they are TRANSPORT, they are INFORMATION (merchants and gossips).

Even if wwx didn't exist, it's just the most tactical thing to do. If you want to cripple your enemies, you target their knowledge and ties. You sabotage supply lines and communication lines. You do that as fast as you can, make sure to damage moral, prevent them from rallying together. The wens win when their enemies are divided. All together and united, they form the sun shot campaign.

WHICH IS WHY. Absolutely NOTHING they say or do can be trusted!!

What's her face coming into lotus pier and targeting wwx is so blatant and transparent a divisive tactic (so identical to the rest of the clan) I was honestly shocked anyone even pretended to listen. Jc believing it even slightly really surprised me. And I'm!! Not trained! In leadership tactics in fantasy land, SECT HEIR. At the very least living with his mother should have given him some idea of how to spot when someone is lashing out and scapegoating for their own gain, good grief.

Unfortunately. Pink antenna (I don't know how but the anime makes her look really old) dangles the possibility of sparing the jiang in front of their faces. It is a long, unlikely shot. It's playing into their hands, it's giving them the jerk off material and superiority high they want, it's undignified and self sabotaging. It's probably stalling at best. But. It's literally the only option either wwx or yzy could live with. If they didn't at least try.

It's exactly the same tactic the jin later use with wwx (again) and the remnants. Give us your strongest people, your glue, your most clever and loyal. Let us ruin them, kill them. In return, we will let your people go free <- lying so openly and blatantly to people so cornered and out of options that they might just, desperately, make the willing sacrifice. It's scummy and cruel.

Ironically, I think this is the time wwx and yzy are most in agreement, and it's when jc would rather anything else. They play this awful role, really ham it up, demean themselves and pretend they're playing right into the wens hands. She says no, she hesitates, she backs out or fumbles, she gets pressed for harder, more, make him really bleed. Wwx is willing to perform the farce and be the sacrifical lamb, on the longest shot to keep his home safe. He wears his own mask for this, because you'll notice he's able to get up and fight immediately after, whereas lwj was bedbound and healing for literal years.

Yes, wwx is insane and martyrish and has way too little self worth. Yes, yzy would not have been so willing if jc was picked. Yes, she stopped the SECOND they realised the wens were just going to keep pressing until wwx was dead and then probably demand she desecrate the corpse. She wasn't about to cripple her best fighter and son's best chance of survival. And she recognised that becoming a supervisory office would be pretty equal to being destroyed by them, but also grant the wen a HUGE boost in everything a war monger could want. If the wen took lotus pier, forces overwhelming as it already was, they would win. Full stop.

Whether or not all that was going through her mind as she slapped pinky idk, and I won't say she made the right choice, but again, either way they did what the wens wanted. This is how they isolate and sabotage threats. They will say and do anything to keep their hallucinated high horse and get that sweet sweet bullying high.

They cannot, under any circumstances, be trusted to give a reliable word on anything. In fact, I'd argue that you should believe the opposite of what they say.

So stop acting like anyone genuinely believes them. Have characters (wwx) blame themselves for events with their guilt complexes but not their head!

Also shout out to mianmian for being the only other person to call anyone out on it.

Like, they canonically fought water ghouls with their bare hands, regularly get into brawls with each other, have no concept of appropriate volume, hell they have a town down close to the worldly people with no height separation or massive stone walls or a comical amount of gold plating, if you didn’t know that they was a cult of martial sorcerers in that town you might just think “wow, wealthy trading family. The docks are nice!” and then just leave.

The sect leader has no spine and a vaguely homoerotic relationship with his dead best friend slash manservant, he adopted one is fucking insane and also a radical genius, and you’d expect him to be the outlier but no, the sister is just as fucking weird, she’s probably gone around in soaking wet clothes carry a child like a football because “he fell in, I couldn’t just leave him there!”

The son likes to pretend he’s sane but he’s such a chronic gossip that he probably needed an intervention, his sword was named after the three poisons, and he also spent 13 years thinking that his dead adopted brother would find a way to resurrect himself.

Even Madam Yu isn’t safe because she lashed a teenager with a lightning whip like 36 times in the middle of the fucking Spanish Inquisition. She has such an irrational hatred of this one guy that she starts shitting on anyone even remotely kind to him. Girl. Go to therapy, or go to jail.

I love the scene where jiang cheng smiles at wei wuxian shooting down the kite after he missed it because it shows that jiang cheng was Not always bitter and jealous of wei wuxians skills. even in the nightmare pressure cooker of their home life, jiang cheng was still proud of wei wuxians accomplishments, even if it meant he did worse. and then the war fucked it all up

It will never not be funny to me that in Thousand Autumns, Shen Qiao is just the one normal, reasonable person while everyone else is living in a classic Wuxia drama

Basically every book conversation is just this:

Yu Ai: I had to poison you because you disagreed with everything I said, so I deemed you an incapable and naive sect leader! You would bring Mt. Xuandu to ruin!

Shen Qiao: I'm sorry, "had" to? We could've talked things out, y'know, like how normal people settle disagreements, but no, poison was clearly the only option left. You "had" to poison me. Right.

It works for a while before lan zhan is having dinner with the jiangs and madame yu is making everyone uncomfortable by berating wei wuxian

Everyone (including wei ying): WHAT????

for his entire life lan wangji has been going "i don't want to be a prominent figure in the cultivation community, i just want to do good things" and now all of a sudden he's going "did i mention i'm one of the twin jades of gusu and my uncle is the lan sect leader. btw. if you were wondering."

It would be so funny. Madame Yu's hatred and anger immediately jumping to Lan Wangji instead. they would have the CRAZIESTTT beef

ok i think she's less possessed and more cursed. and it's one of those curses that is only a curse from a certain point of view, like she successfully liberates something powerful and grateful and that being curseblesses her with her own freedom. and in that moment she genuinely doesn't want anyone dead or banished she's just so tired of (from her pov) fighting for her children's birthright and her own place in her home and marriage and she knows/believes that nothing she could ever do would fix it. whatever entity curseblessed her to stop giving a fuck about her duty and her rights and her children's place in the world and do what she wants on the most basic and selfish level and what she wants is to go home. it's genuinely so disruptive and unfair to jiang cheng and yanli but a) she is not good at her children's feelings to begin with b) magical freedom from obligation doesn't really lead to child first decision making. Yuanyuan is taking her maids and her children and she is not coming back. This is basically targeted Yanli torture because she's out there trying to minimize her own feelings all "you can't do this to A-Cheng (pay no attention to me and what I might want) he misses A-die, Lotus Pier is his home what does it look like for the heir to be missing" and her mother, freely expressing herself (freedom can actually suck so bad) responds "well you see. i couldn't stand being there another second and i couldn't stand losing the two of you and if i send him back we'll never see him again. and your father still won't care about him so he'll be all alone. unless you go with him, and i lose you both. is that what you want?" Yanli is actually I think having the worst time closely followed by Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. Jiang Fengmian is being protected by a wall of fuzzy delusion about how his wife is definitely coming to her senses any day now but the wall cannot hold indefinitely.

Madame Yu would never but oh for one fic where she packs up the kids and flees the jurisdiction. Jiang Cheng and Yanli would be so upset and miss Wei Wuxian and their father and you know, their home & community. Jiang Fengmian feels like he's taken a truck to the face (thanks truck-kun). Wei Wuxian is sure it's all his fault and is deeply distressed. Madame Yu is probably literally possessed. But still. It sucks! leave! Hit the bricks! listen to the meme skeleton that has taken up residence in your head.

Lan Wangji hears of Wei Ying's marriage to Jiang Cheng and feels nothing but relief.

It means she's safe.

It means Jiang Cheng is safe as well as Master Jiang and Madame Yu, that the Wen's attempt against the Jiang has only succeeded on the most hollow of fronts. The Wen now control Lotus Pier, but thanks to the plans made by Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng the majority of their disciples escaped, their civilians have been instructed that to obey the Wen is not a betrayal, and now the leaders they attempted to kidnap and control have been lost to them.

Their cores are a loss. Jiang Cheng and Wei Ying being required to step into the roles of sect leaders so young and so suddenly is a tragedy, as it is a tragedy that Xichen's ascension to sect leader is happening in a time of war rather than a time of peace.

But he has always known that the place of Wei Ying's husband belonged to Jiang Cheng. It has always been understood between them that one day she would stand above him in the cultivation world - at Jiang Cheng's side. That it's a place she both desired and coveted and has spent her life eagerly preparing to take.

Wei Ying is now Madame Jiang.

His only regret is that he was not there to see it happen.

Thinking about an AU where Jiang Yanli's "weak / mediocre cultivation" was caused by a horrific training accident when she was pretty young, in part to explore the tragedy and disability of it all and in part for the humorous "older relative casually drops wild personal lore that changes your entire perception of them" angle.

Like, Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan's firstborn child is a girl, which is not ideal in this deeply sexist world, but the sect motto is "attempt the impossible", right? It's not unheard of for female cultivators to lead sects and Yu Ziyuan wants her daughter to be the first female Jiang sect leader, to show up the cultivation world, and Jiang Fengmian isn't against the idea and wants the best for his daughter (although he probably doesn't want her to be a copy of his wife). So Jiang Yanli starts her cultivation training pretty early. There's a lot of intense pressure, a lot of expectation and projection and some arguments, and it all culminates in this poor child getting badly injured, with permanent damage to both her body and to her cultivation. It's a "no one's fault and everyone's fault" thing.

Jiang Fengmian and Yu Ziyuan quietly drop their plans for Yanli to become the sect leader and focus on a very young Jiang Cheng instead, which is easy in part because everyone expects the son to inherit anyway. A young Jiang Yanli is betrothed to the heir of the Jin Sect and this is basically never talked about ever again. General perception is that Jiang Yanli is a mediocre cultivator at best because she was born that way (she's a WOMAN, after all) and/or because her disposition is just too sweet and agreeable, and OF COURSE the son became the heir as soon as the Jiangs had a son. That's just how things work!

So, in an AU where Jiang Yanli (and Jin Zixuan?) lives and teenage Jin Ling is freaking out about some embarrassing and/or dangerous mistake on a night hunt...

Jiang Yanli, patting her son's shoulder: "It's going to be okay. You know, when I was a young child, I permanently injured myself in a training accident and could no longer become the Jiang sect leader, and it felt like the end of the world, letting everyone down, but it all worked out in the end!"

Jin Ling, whose entire 15-year-old worldview just got flipped upside-down: "...Mother?! What?!?!"

Summary: What if it was Jiang Fengmian and Madam Yu who died? What if Wei Changze took control of the Lotus Throne? A Sect Leader WCZ AU oneshot inspired from the many asks on angstymdzsthoughts. Kay's comments: Very torn because my heart hurts at the thought of either of the Wei parents being an asshole, but. I also live for the angst and I live for @angstymdzsthoughts inspired stories. And this one is such a good angsty story and despite not having been update in a long time, definitely worth giving a chance, since it can also be read as a one-shot (the first chapter was originally meant as a one-shot anyways). In this story, it was the Jiang parents who died instead of the Wei parents, so Wei Changze took over as the regent until Jiang Cheng can take over and unfortunately, he pushes Wei Ying into the role of becoming a servant for the Jiang Sect and their relationship becomes very detached. Luckily, Wei Ying's mom still has his back! Excerpt: It doesn’t matter that the uncle selling lotus pods on the streets says that Lotus Pier has been flourishing since Wei Changze took the task of leading the sect. For his father, his surname Wei has no purpose if separated from the Jiangs. That Wei is a follower, not a leader. The statement echoes in his thoughts and Wuxian snaps. All that he can hear right now is a buzz in his ears. He cannot tell what his father is saying. All he knows is that he is the son of a servant who is a leader, but never acknowledges that title. He is the son of a servant serving his best friend. He is a Wei whose destiny was written. Whose fate was to be by Jiang Cheng’s side and protect him. He is a Wei whose worth they will never acknowledge, even when he puts his life at risk to save the one he was told to. Because he is a Wei and hence a servant. The buzzing stops and he is met with a pin drop silence. Yet he doesn’t look up at his father, who had now stopped speaking.
