There's this way of doing female-ness in Christianity that I call "pastel flower journal Christianity." I've got nothing against pastel flower journals per se, but for some reason people believe it's the end all and be all of female spirituality, and I think it's a real disservice towards young Christian women.

One of these days I'd like to start a prayer-and-reading group or something for young women, but there would be no floral themes or over-focus on how "God thinks you're beautiful even if the world doesn't" (a true statement, but it's wayyyyy too often the focus in women's spiritual reading). Instead we would be reading:

Seneca's Letters from a Stoic

Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning

Sheed's A Map of Life

Portions of Pieper's book on leisure

Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life

Guardini's The Lord (or something similar)

Therese's Story of a Soul

and some select portions of the Nicomachean Ethics.

(Also they're all getting the porn talk. I don't know why we give the porn talk to young men but not young women. There's this idea that women don't use porn and they only need the talk about "guarding their heart." Bullshit. There's porn on the YA shelves of Barnes and Nobles and before that there were bodice rippers. Young women need the porn talk too.)

Every young woman needs to be getting a basic grounding in virtue ethics, logic, natural law, scholastic philosophy and Biblical hermeneutics if they're going to get by in today's spiritual landscape. Enough faffery and emotionalism in young women's spiritual education! Give them real food to chew on, not pasty sentimentalism!

Reading the Sixth Astral Era timeline in Encyclopedia Eorzea really puts a lot of things into perspective for me. Like I knew the Calamity happened in 1572, but actually reading the timeline of major events in Eorzea really forces you to conceptualize how fucking long that is.

For one thing: the last Calamity was 1500 years ago? For the average person that might as well be Biblical times. No wonder people didn't believe it would happen again. You might as well be telling them Noah's flood is going to happen again next month.

For another: it puts a lot about Sharlayan in perspective when you realize that a) it was one of the first city-states to be established after the Calamity of Water flooded most of Eorzea, and b) the territory Archon Nyunkrepf and his followers settled seems to have been largely uncontested. Within 600 years they were figuring out how to build aetherytes. Meanwhile, the Elezen who settled Coerthas were fucking around and finding out with the dragons; Gelmorra and Belah'dia wouldn't be built for another century; Limsa Lominsa wouldn't be settled for more than another century after that. Thanalan, La Noscea, and the Black Shroud would all be mired in territorial disputes for hundreds of years after that, some of which persist into the present-day.

It's not that the Sharlayans are uniquely smarter or intrinsically value learning more than anyone else, imo, it's just that it's a lot easier to put resources into scientific study and build stable institutions of learning and knowledge collection when you've never really had to prioritize military strength because you don't have a neighboring nation trying to kick your shit in every other week. And it also makes sense that they subsequently balk when pressed to join a military alliance, because that is not the resource their society is built to offer.

hello i just saw that you are self taught and i was wondering what you started with or if you just went for drawing whatever you could hail mary and then just slowly figured it out from there? asking as a beginner artist attempting to do the second because i have no patience for the first

also how long did it take your art looks very cool

i started drawing because i liked comic books but i didn’t have access to the internet and couldn’t look at pretty pictures of my fav character. so it became a “fine i’ll do it myself” thing and i had to learn to be better at art so i could do my favs justice. so it was just printer paper and pencils at the beginning. i began digital art when i was 12. no fancy tools needed, my favourite brush is the default square brush on procreate, and i draw with sharpies on paper

please don’t treat the process of learning to draw as something tedious or a means to an end. watching yourself improve is a very rewarding experience, and is part of the art itself. no shortcuts i’m afraid. i would advise you to draw things you really love and keep pushing through.

not sure when i finally started to like my art tho. i don’t think there’s any artist who is truly satisfied with their work, that’s what keeps pushing us to get better. i actually was under the impression that my art style was kinda generic until u guys pointed out that u could recognize it. so everything is in the eye of the beholder, haha.
