I keep wondering, what if Sirius Black hadn’t found James Potter on that first train ride to Hogwarts?

Instead, the door he slid open revealed not a boy with messy hair and an ego to match, but a quiet, guarded Severus Snape?

Just two boys, neither loved quite right, thrown into the same compartment before the world told them they were meant to be enemies.

Sirius flopped down opposite the first lone figure he saw—black hair, hollow stare, arms crossed as if daring the world to speak first. He grinned. “Hi. You look like you hate everything. I think we’ll get along.” Severus looked up, unimpressed. “You talk too much.” Sirius tilted his head. “And you look like you haven’t smiled since birth.” Smirk met sneer in silence. It wasn’t friendship, yet, but something had clicked. The corner of Sirius’ mouth twitched. “Yeah. We’ll definitely get along.”

Sirius is the one who mumbles nonsense during sex, and what Severus hears most often is "carry our puppies", which makes no sense until Severus finds out that Sirius is a dog animagus.

Basically, Harry as a semi-adult but acting like the average protagonist of '90s kids' movies, trying to set up two adults to become his parents, while Ginny is completely confused, and Hermione and Ron just decide to assume that this is how orphans deal with post-traumatic stress.

I was thinking "Gladiator - Jann" but I'm not sure.

"I would hate me too - TX2" feels like a close second but doesn't at the same time.

This man is so complex, I'm not sure if one song is enough.

Not many characters can be summarized with one song and Snape is so complex he needs a whole playlist. Though I must admit I don't have this many songs coming to mind. Sometimes it's a few lyrics here and there in the middle of a song but it's rarely the good music genre or vibe. BUT I have a few strong opinions.

First of, The Smiths have the perfect vibe. It's British spleen to it's finest. Yearning, misanthropy, the beauty found in our bleakest moments, stories of outcast, of loving too much... It fits him perfectly. Here are my two favs:

Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want - The Smiths

This one is very sad and beautiful. It fits really well with the unfairness of his life and the bitterness and sadness he carried within.

There's a Light that Never Goes Out - The Smiths

It's pure teen/young-adult Severus. The chorus with the double-decker bus is the most gloomy and romantic shit I've ever heard in my life (and I love it so much). I'm wholeheartedly convinced it's the way he'd apprehend romance: with a snark barely hiding the depth of his love which would be bordering on suicidal loyalty. His yearning to belong and be loved is deep that way. doubledeckerbus!Snape 100%.

Also the song lyrics about not having a house anymore ('it's their home and I'm welcome no more') fits really well with how he'd feel about his parents.

The Shape of Water - Alexandre Desplat

I feel like this theme fits him quite well in his adult life. It's delicate, eerie and melancholic. Calm too and very watery. Reminds me of the Lake, the dungeons, his potion lab. Something a tad romantic too, but not necessarily sad. I love it a lot.

Burn your village - Kiki Rockwell

This one is more representative of his teen self. Very angry, very proud, sick of being a victim and feeling weak. It's his anger against the Maraudeurs, his Father, the Headmaster, Lily. It's him seeking power with the Dark Arts and then the DE and the Dark Lord. It's desperate anger.

(very witch/female coded, but works nicely and I think my female!Snape lovers might like it)

Summer 1 - Max Richter

It's a rewriting of Vivaldi's summer. I adore this movement, it's extremely poignant and tragic towards the end and I've come to associate it with Severus's deep pain and feelings.

(but do yourself a favor and listen to the whole 4 seasons by Max Richter it's incredible, especially imo Summer 1 and 3 and Winter 1 but I'm a dramatic bitch)
