Mercury also has powers over... soap?! hahaha Since her first attack was named Shabon Spray. Shabon (japanese) comes from the portuguese Sabão, soap. It's a shame no translation I have ever seen acknowledges that

OMG YES, I remember learning that when I first got into Sailor Moon many years ago!

Side note, the influence of Portuguese on the Japanese language is a fascinating topic! The Portuguese were the first Europeans to meet the Japanese and establish relations, and they had a big impact on Japanese culture.

Even ten years after I first got into Sailor Moon, I still don’t really get the “lol if the attack doesn’t kill monsters on the spot it’s useless” mindset. Yes, the additional versatility in the manga and Crystal’s version is nice, but at the same time, providing a fog cover isn’t exactly “doing nothing.”

Once it’s cast, there are options for where to go. Mercury can scan for weaknesses, get the frick out of there, or take advantage of the enemy’s confusion to land an attack (and yes, I know she has no additional magic attacks in Classic season 1, but no one ever said she couldn’t punch someone or hit them with an object) or allow someone else the opportunity to do so. 

Which doesn’t exactly sound like “useless and does nothing” to me.

If given enough training and with enough imagination, First Season Sailor Mercury would be able to incorporate undead monsters from Silent Hill and Resident Evil into her 'Shabon Spray' mist.

Ami Mizuno / Sailor Mercury

Represents: Wisdom, Intelligence

Role: Strategist. Uses mini supercomputer to find enemy weaknesses.

Personality: Gentle, kind, shy, friendly, loyal, gets insecure at times.

Likes: Maths, science, swimming, chess, reading, sandwiches (because she can eat them easily while studying).

Dream: To become a doctor.

Family: Mum (who she lives with, and is a doctor), father (divorced and lives elsewhere as an artist).

Love interests: Urawa-kun (in 90s anime), Zoisite (Sailor Moon Crystal).

Ami is extremely intelligent and is rumoured (in the series) to have an IQ of 300. She’s very studious and kindhearted, helping her friends study. She is loyal and and despite being gentle, she will stand up for her friends when needed.

Elements / Powers

Sailor Mercury attacks with water-based powers. She can create fog (to hide from enemies and gain the upper hand), blizzards, water, and water-based energy beams. She is able to freeze enemies by dowsing them with water.

Notable Attacks (she does have more):

‘Shabon Spray’ - a spray of bubbles which create fog and can freeze enemies.

‘Shine Aqua Illusion’ - Water freezes enemies or hits them for damage.

‘Mercury Aqua Rhapsody’ - Super Sailor Mercury plays her harp and beams of water hit the enemy for damage.

‘Mercury Aqua Mirage’ - she creates a globe of water which is split and shot at the enemy as beams of water energy.

Yo Sailor Moon R episode 7 was great! All that talking about Ami-chan’s IQ I mentioned yesterday can be laid to rest, she knows that the Cardians are called that even though I don’t think they’ve been namedropped in front of her or any of the Sailor Soldiers for that matter, our girl’s become omniscient. Nah but jokes aside this episode was fun. Following En and Ali attacking kindergarteners last episode, they’ve moved on to babies in this one. I can’t wait for fetuses in the next episode, and embryos after that. Ami actually gets a lot of screentime in this episode though, not necessarily with development in mind the same way as Minako had in the last episode, but she’s still very present without it being about her boyfriend dude, you know like she gets to tease Usagi sometimes and check up on her and Mamoru and their new baby, as well as willingly leave the pair alone I’m assuming because she wants Usagi to be able to bond with Mamoru, she’s sweet like that. Also remember how yesterday I was saying that Crescent Beam Shower was rationalised by Artemis as one of Minako’s hidden powers, and thus I was afraid that we might not see anything new from the other Sailor Soldiers, and I specifically wanted Ami to get more things since Bubble Spray isn’t really that great? Well speak of the devil, because all of Ami-chan’s screentime in this episode was building up to her getting a new technique - Bubble Spray Freezing, which as its name suggests, is like Bubble Spray but it freezes the opponent(s). Always kind of assumed she was like, purely a water elemental, but ice as well is nice. Plus the inherent niceness of Ami-chan existing and doing things. She does rush Usagi to use Moon Princess Halation and finish off the Cardian though, because apparently they’ll melt in the daylight heat, so either it’s not very good ice, it’s unreasonably hot, or Ami’s just plain stupid. Or more likely I’m being pedantic and paying too much attention to a random line. Probably that. Also I’ve never mentioned this but while the move has always been subbed as “Bubble Spray” it’s never sounded like that to me, instead it sounds like “Shabon Spray”, so just after this episode I finally did my research, and it turns out the move is called “Sabão Spray”, “Sabão” being the Portuguese word for soap. This makes it the only move up to this point that’s not entirely in English, so that’s something. Also while her “Sabão“  sounds more like “Shabon”, “Shabon” is Japanese for “soap” anyway. So like, Soap Spray is its name. I’mma just keep calling it Bubble Spray to be honest. Also it was fun seeing Usagi and Mamoru being parents to this kid, Mamoru it turns out is a super cool dad, and with my knowledge that Chibiusa’ll show up in R eventually and also that she’s Usagi and Mamoru’s kid (don’t know if that’s revealed immediately though) this was sort of a precursor to that, I guess. So yeah, really fun episode. With Minako and Ami just having gotten upgrades to their moves, I have to assume the next 2 episodes will do the same with Rei and Makoto, which should be interesting because their techniques so far have seemed to be the most powerful, and in fact when it comes to Rei she’s also got her shrine maiden talismans and stuff. It’ll be fun to see how they’re improved.
