From the Inquisitor to the Baptist: The Evolution of John Seed
Part 6: Sources, references, and further reading
(There are links under all the pictures in this post)
1: Concept art posted by Nick Arnett on Instagram
"Here is some more concept art I got to be in, that never made it." https://www.instagram.com/p/BvwpicenXHg/
And many thanks to @minilev for originally sharing the picture on Tumblr here!
2: “Last-Supper-like” images
The first picture was used to promote the game, for example during E3 2017 where it was on display outside the Los Angeles Convention Center (it briefly appears in this video).
I couldn’t find who exactly made it, but you can see/download it in very high definition (12,500 x 2,000 pixels) here:

The second is the “Key Art”, made by an entire team (and some of the people below most likely also worked on the previous one):
Creative Director: Michael Hammond Art Director: Brian Tippie Lead Artist: Wil Wells Assisting Artist: Camille Fache Assisting Artist: One Pixel Brush - Shaddy Safadi, Matteo Marjoram Character Art: Petur Arnorsson Brand Management: Dilip Priyanath, Ann Hamilton, Bailey McAndrews, Thomas Seris Project Management: Alicia Ruiz, Sam Nielsen Authenticity Coordinator: Travis Getz Reference photography: Ryan Flynn with Brick & Chrome Additional work by Blur Studio (they usually make the CGI trailers), Helix, and Studio Mtl.
See/download it in HD (7,000 x 4,054 pixels) here:

hey, I love your art! what brushes do u use??
Thanks for asking!!
I use Shaddy Safadi's brushes that he used to provide on his website. He was the lead concept artist for The Last of Us and the Uncharted series!
Years ago he shared his personal brush set up on his now inactive website alongside an incredibly in-depth youtube tutorial that explained his process. I believe the goal was to teach people how to paint in his style so he could eventually grow his studio "One Pixel Brush". That brush pack has since been scrubbed from the internet sooo:
I re-uploaded the .abr to file.io for you<3
and
Here is the tutorial series explaining how to use them!

Blog Post #7
Unreal as a new end-of-pipeline for concept artists
In a two hour podcast where Adrew Price from the Blender Guru channel interviewed legendary concept artist Shaddy Safadi on the topic ‘Is Concept Art Really Dead?’ (the answer of course being no). Shaddy Safadi explained that concept artists not only need to be able to paint as well as AI in order to utilise it in their art and other ways of using it as a springboard, he explained that it is perhaps time for concept artists to not just focus on the first stage of the production pipeline of concept art only. He explained that as 3D tools get more and more user friendly to create photo-real outcomes that concept artists should start picking up software like Blender, Substance painter and even the Unreal engine to bring their visions to life in 3D and execute the entire pipeline themselves. He feels that the future of concept art is on me where the boundaries between concept art, 3D modelling and final visual effects are blurred. He believes that there will be more single artists or small teams could handle everything from concept creation to final VFX or in my case game environments. It is worth noting that game programming is a more distanced skill from concept art than visual effects although ever evolving utilities like unreal blueprints are making this more accessible too.

Safadi is excited about this potential future where concept artists could be more present throughout the entire creative process effectively becoming “art gods” who can oversee and even execute all visual aspects of a production. The current advancements in AI, accessibility to affordable powerful computers and ever more accessible software will make it more achievable to be able to create art in this way. This suggestion is a major inspiration behind my production pipeline of my Solarpunk project where I will concpetualise and digital paint, model, UV map, texture paint and then create a detailed scene in Unreal 5, even dabbling in blueprints where necessary.

Why Concept Art is Mostly Freelance
Freelance means that you are not employed by any one company and instead work for commission from the companies as and when they need the work done. This is because companies cannot afford to payroll concept artists for the year as most of the time they will not be working, most companies will only work on a single project at a time so once their job is done there is no work to do and no reason for them to be paid for that time.
10 best Freelance Concept artists in my opinion
Shaddy Safadi -

Shaddy Safadi is an amazing conccept artist and has worked on some of my favourite games and media, such as ‘The Last Of Us’ a post apocalyptic game where an infectious fungus has turned most of the worlds populous into mindless zombies driven only by their rage and hunger, the designs for their characters and creatures are very interesting and anatomically accurate. The zombies have different forms and sizes, this is dependant on the amount of time they’ve been infected for, the next level of transformation causes the zombie to become completely blind, the ‘Clickers’ use echo location and clicking to move and use sounds to find their prey.
Gilles Beloeil -

Gilles Beloeil is primarily an environmental concept artist who has worked heavily in the assassins creed series. Assassins Creed is a well known and much loved series of games known for their historical recreations of cities and famous buildings, set in the near future where the ‘Full Dive Virtual Reality’ is a fully developed product and is being used to research personal familial history in order to record events to base video games off of.
Cedric Peyravernay -

Cedric Payravernay is a character concept artist who has worked very heavily with Bethesda on the Dishonored games, His art style has definitely influenced and been the basis of the character models, the final product in the game looks very much alike to the concept art, this matches the dark atmosphere of the game perfectly, only alleviating in the short scenes with the empress’ daughter Emily.
David De Leon Luis -

David De Leon Luis is a mainly creature concept artist, he has worked with the team behind Dota 2 one of the best known and most popular MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game.
Eytan Zana -

Eytan Zana is an environmental concept artist who has worked on the Uncharted game series, the series makes use of ancient ruins and interesting ruined towns, this makes each environment interesting and unique to the location. The main story has the main character searching for treasures and artefacts to sell and earn money from.
Wesley Burt -

Wesley Burt is a character concept artist who has worked on the Infamous franchise, Infamous is a game franchise based on the premise that super powers can be gained, this is found out by accident by the main character when he is the epicentre of a large explosion, killing many people, he survived and discovered his new ability to take in and produce electricity and must find out how and why this has happened.
Adam Adamowicz -

Adam Adamowicz was a concept artist for bethesda and worked on many of their top game franchises, such as ‘Fallout’ and ‘The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim’
Fallout and Skyrim couldn’t be more different in premise and genre, one being fantasy and the other being Sci-fi, Fallout is based in a post apocalyptic world where humans caused their own downfall by the use of nuclear weapons. the world contains robots and AI that over the years can have deteriorated and become deranged attacking anything that comes within eye line.
Skyrim is based in a fantasy realm known as Tamriel where skyrim is a country, the story follows the player as they make world changing decisions into what they want to do and how they want to do it.
Dave Rapoza -

Dave Rapoza is a character concept artist who has worked with EpicGames on their MOBA ‘Paragon’ a futuristic game where each character is enhanced in some way or another with either alien blood or cybernetics.
Noah Bradley -

Noah Bradley is an environmental concept artist who uses colour and light in his work to make each and every piece come to life, each one looking very much fantasy based and extremely beautiful.
Feng Zhu -

Feng Zhu is a concept artist who is very broad scale and diversely skilled, working in both creature concepts and environmental concepts making beautiful pieces based on things he enjoys, such as fan concepts for Fallout.
Being able to generate 3D assets will help me later in life as it will be able to perform two parts of a job both concept art and 3D modelling it will allow me to fulfil more of the required work and will let me do more work in order to get more money from the person or company commissioning me

(Research Essay)
Concept Artists:
I am going to select a few artists that are influential and have been involved with many films, games and shows etc - as well as some whose artwork I really enjoy. I'm looking mostly for an artist that has had a bigger influence and impact on the industry however.
Glen Keane - A legend in Disney whose artwork has come to shape the look of characters produced by Disney today. He has contributed to many of the Disney classics we know such as beauty and the Beast, Tangled, Tarzan and Aladdin
Dylan Cole - Another artist that worked on Avatar and so many other big production films like Maleficent, Superman, Tron, and Alice in Wonderland.
Shaddy Safadi - He is a digital game artist who has worked on many of the game company "Naughty Dog" including The Last Of Us and Uncharted (Two games that I love very much) His work spans over the course of nearly 20 years and his work can be found in a variety of games.
Johnathan Bach - Concept artist that has and is is currently still working on the Avatar series - including the new film that was just recently released. He talked about how he got to where he is today and how often times he was thrown into the deep end with projects and how this actually helped him and his careers today.
Dylan Cole & Glen Keane are the two that interest me the most from the most influential artists: from their extensive experience in the industry as well as the amount of projects their work is featured in.
I think that I would really be able to look into these two and use them to aid my research.

Current Industry Advancements
Blog Post #4
AI in the creative field is rapidly expanding to include not only illustration, but also animation, storyboards, script and creative writing, and even modelling. AI has been a continuous theme in these posts due to the breadth of its influence in the creative industry including concept art. The ease at which AI converts difficult, tedious and expert tasks means that creation has never been more accessible, which also means that certain creative professionals are feeling the strain. However, by embracing certain AI tools, concept artists (and any creative) can expand the breadth of their creative presentation.
Animation is one key field concept artists can more easily expand into thanks to AI, which is extremely suitable for conceptualising character movements.

A screenshot of Mixamo's animation library, Adobe, 2024
The automatic rigging, animation preset and motion capture software Mixamo, has been around for a few years, but when coupled with AI animation software Cascaduer, animation becomes something extremely accessible to an amateur. Cascadeur uses AI to create smooth transitions between poses, easily clean up a mo-cap animation and generate the natural deformation physics that come with muscular movement. It also allows for accurate interaction with the environment with their AutoPhysics tool. It seems a god-like tool that I can see also being used by veterans in the field to reduce the amount of clean-up and key-frames needed for life-like and nuanced animations.
youtube
A Cascadeur showcase, Cascadeur, 2024.
An example of Cascadeur being used is by indie game developer MLMEDIA, who used it to create parkour animations for their game Rooftops & Alleys. This AI software truly opens doors for concept artists who want to realise their ideas without having to wait for a team or a producer.
A YouTube short showcasing how Cascadeur was used to create animations for indie game Rooftops & Alleys, 2024.
These developments yet again remind me of Shaddy Safadi's imagining of a future where one person may be in charge of the entire pipeline (The Andrew Price Podcast, 2022). It will be a fascinating time in gaming and creative media, which I see as possibly becoming even more over-saturated with content similar to the YouTube phenomenon of media creation. Creative competition may give rise to some truly outlandish creations as artists fight to stand out, which is exciting to think about, but the pessimist in me worries that capitalism will force creative professionals into creative hobbyists. However, I also believe that the years spent training and learning the fundamentals of art and media production will still continue to set media apart from others.

Shaddy Safadi
The location that Shaddy Safadi works in is a place called Santa Monica, The game companies that he works for are companies that work in the same area and example of these companies that he has worked for naughty dog
The early work of Shaddy Safadi he was offered to work on the uncharted titles by producing sketches, style guides and detailed digital paintings which helped establish lighting, and colour. When he first started working on the uncharted series he started as a concept artist however the problem he had is he wasn’t use to the realistic art style of the uncharted and because of this he was nearly kick of the Naughty Dog Team. However after he played an uncharted game he fully understood the art style of the game after that he was able to work on the characters of the game. In 2013 he also helped creating the key shorts in the game of the Last of us after this he left Naughty dog to make his own company which is called one pixel brush and this company works on art styles for many other companies like Naughty Dog Ubisoft, Infinity Ward, Riot Games, BioWare, Irrational Games, Treyarch, Crytek
The Reason that I know this artist is because the games that he has worked on I have played example of this is I have played uncharted and I have also played the last of us so I have seen what his art work is like
The reason that Shaddy Safadi is inspirational is because this guy is giving me some ideas of how I could do my art style in the future instead of just doing pixel art for every project
Some of the art that Shaddy Safadi has done
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W01L70IGBgE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh5HV4iic1Y
The way that Shaddy Safadi got to the place where he is today is because he started out working for smaller companies, then working for bigger companies like naughty dog and working on the uncharted series then the last of us then he was able to make his own company
The reason this person stands out to me is because his art style is really cool looking and is really well made and it shows that he puts a lot of time and effort in to making the art style for these games
