Identity
How we understand, how we appropriate our personal identity in Christ is a highly individual thing. We may grow in this understanding over time, in incremental ways. It may come to us as an occasional insight in moments of spiritual clarity. We may experience considerable confusion as we navigate between our various identities. And yet the center is Christ himself.
-Br. Mark Brown

Miles Davis – Sivad
Yes, as we grow in life, we grow in Christ. Experience is the greatest teacher in life, and this should apply to our spiritual life as well. In some core ways, I am the same frightened 6 year old who would nervously arrive at school before anyone else just because I was dreading it and wanted it to be over, and I guess in some way getting there so early helped cut the nervousness, and got the ordeal started, meaning I could then start the countdown to when it would end. But in just as important ways, I am very different from the person I was even 6 months ago. Br. Mark is right on in noting our understanding of ourselves as well as our walk in faith can come in flurries or in unexpected ways. Not long ago, through the kindness of others, I had a profound realization. Part of the realization was that despite my sense that my prayers have been muddy and weak and blocked, I nevertheless kept at it. When I got this unexpected awakening, it seemed that those efforts were like deposits in the vault – and I was getting the payout all at once and it was wonderful. And as this was unexpected, it was hard for me because I seem to be more at ease giving than receiving, but it is important that we develop the ability to receive - because in so doing, we allow others to give and express their love. this back and forth then builds momentum as we come to rely and trust one another and a fullness emerges, and those deposits in my bank of love were increased because I now had the love and thoughtfulness of other people added to my own efforts!! This meditation brought to mind this period of Miles’ career. I’m not a huge fan of Miles. This period is where I tend to like his stuff most – the late 60’s early 70’s period where he concocted a brew of funk so dense and filthy and raw, they really did need about 45 minutes per song to really cook it all the way through. His cool jazz stuff leaves me cool – I like the fire of bop and free jazz. But I recognize his genius, although I do wonder if this simmering funk period grew out of his own creative pulse, or if in fact, it was a result of seeing Sly Stone tearing it up at Newport, leaving Miles feeling a bit old and passé. But even if it was his own insecurity that directed him to the Funk stew – he dove in and assembled the right associates and they created a very unique and extraordinary body of work during these years. This song title is his last name spelled backwards and the album is called Live-Evil – so obviously, we hear Miles exploring the very thing Br. Mark speaks of in this meditation. He’s exploring and contrasting his own being, his own identity. And it is all the more fitting that he allows for such space and time to let the music really expand and find its fullness, for Miles is seeking that same fullness. For me, as I look back on my own pieces which have changed or have remained constant, I do see just what Br. Mark identifies – Christ at the center. All those mornings walking to school so early as that odd little 6 year old – I prayed. And now, all the early mornings I walk to work, I pray. Some rotations I have been closer to God, others more distant. But I don’t think I’ve strayed entirely out of the orbit. I don’t think I have ever wanted to.

Saul Will. "The Continent
Last night I laid within your continent Sought salvation from frustration with in your loving nation found the true meaning of homeland when you let me inland Swahili tongue knew I hadn’t been there before kissed for me to stay awhile I did you one better and stayed forever, in your country Then you let me tap your virgin drum releasing echoes of me being free Free to run through your countryside touching jasmine, dropping weed Free to nibble on your Nigeria Blow on your Botswana Eat your Opia til there is no more Opia left Won’t be any leftovers when I’m done Won’t be anything when I’m done Just remembrance of that night when I laid within your continent seeking salvation from frustration within your loving nation and that’s all we’ll have That, and a few thousand orphans to read this poem
