Mehr Technik, gegenteiliges Ergebnis: Die Lichtsteuerung schlägt zurück

Ein Teil unseres Instituts ist in einem älteren Gebäude untergebracht. Immer wieder fiel auf, dass das Licht in den Fluren auch nachts brannte – vermutlich, weil jemand spät gearbeitet und beim Gehen vergessen hatte, es auszuschalten. Trotz wiederholter Appelle, daran zu denken, blieb das Problem bestehen.

Zum Glück gibt es technische Lösungen: Vor Kurzem wurden Bewegungsmelder installiert. Eine elegante und gar nicht so neue Idee – das Licht schaltet sich nur dann ein, wenn jemand vorbeigeht, und erlischt nach wenigen Minuten automatisch. Ein angenehmes Gefühl: Beim nächtlichen Gang durch die dunklen Flure geht das Licht wie von Geisterhand einige Meter vor mir an, ohne dass ich im Dunklen nach einem Schalter tasten muss. Und hinter mir wird es ebenso geisterhaft wieder dunkel. Die Lichtschalter sind jetzt zwar noch da, haben aber keine Funktion mehr.

Doch wie so oft gilt: Keine technische Lösung funktioniert ohne Nachdenken. Offenbar wurden die Bewegungsmelder ohne Dämmerungssensor installiert. Das Ergebnis? Auch tagsüber geht das Licht an, sobald jemand vorbeigeht – und da auf unseren Gängen tagsüber reger Betrieb herrscht, brennt das Licht nun auch wenn es hell ist fast ununterbrochen.

Immerhin: Nachts, wenn niemand da ist, ist es jetzt dunkel. Dafür tagsüber hell. Die Gesamtbeleuchtungsdauer dürfte also ungefähr konstant bleiben oder höchstens leicht zugenommen haben.

My stance is that if you're a young and/or beginner fantasy writer, you need to stay far away from online fantasy discourse because it will get you obsessing over shit that does not actually matter to anyone other than online nitpickers.

If someone can't read one of the foundational works of fantasy about the importance of seemingly insignificant persons because the map has unrealistic geography, that's actually a them problem. You don't need to research geography, agriculture, economics, or any other logistics so that everything is realistic, you need to tell a story.
