nerdjo x reader ⟢ real man

"... did you know that a quasar emits more energy in a second than our sun will in its entire lifetime?"
"uh... sure?"
༄.° pairing . nerd! gojo x popular! reader (f)
⤷ summary . a low grade lands you a tutor session with the nerdiest boy at your university with the help of the best wingman, your professor, who knows that gojo is your only way of improving that 59.6% in your physics class. your annoyance soon turns into admiration and maybe something else as you find yourself enjoying the late night study sessions. but what happens when the physic sessions turn into sex education?
warning ⓘ tags . (18+), porn with plot me thinks, smut, gojo will give you second hand embarrassment bless his soul, protected sex that will lead to unprotected, masturbation, praise kink, oral, p in v, cream pie. sub gojo heh. jealous gojo. perv gojo. obsessive gojo.
⤷ wc . 4k (not proofread)
a/n . this is my first actual attempt to writing good smut. never got the hang of it so hopefully this turns out good. the 59.6% is specific because that is MY current grade and I might just kms if nerdjo doesn't help me out.
a/n . 2 I enjoyed writing the friendship buildup more than the actual smut :p

waking up to an email sent by your physics professor was not the best way to start off the day.
"you've got to be kidding me.." you grumbled, with your morning voice attempting to read the title of the email as your blurry eyes adjusted to the bright screen of your phone. you weren't surprised when the subject was that you are being assigned a tutor. you were aware of your current grade, but you swore you would be able to raise it up. right after partying.
your roommate, and long term friend, peaks over your shoulder as she buttoned up her pants. "yikes, I'm surprised he hasn't admitted you to a tutor earlier, haven't you had the same grade for a while now?"
you sighed knowing she was right. your grade hasn't gone up even a percentage for the past two weeks.
'meet me in class before it begins today, perhaps 10 minutes before, ill be introducing you to your tutor and we'll discuss how things will work.'
and that's how you found yourself standing in front of your teachers desk awkwardly. "he'll be here soon, he's very punctual."
you nodded in acknowledgment. you wanted to play it safe and come a few minutes earlier than the given time written on the email. '10 minutes before class'. the said class begins at 9:40. it is currently 9:28.
he was punctual alright. the moment it struck the half hour, the door swung open to reveal a tall boy- no, a really tall boy. he had white hair and blinding blue eyes behind dorky glasses. despite his nerdy look, the boy had a few facial piercings. one on his eyebrow and his lip.
that's hot.
"satoru! come in, come" your professor gestured the boy to be next to you. satoru offered a small, shy wave, which you responded with a warm smile.
"so as we all know, y/n isn't doing so well in this class." you cringed feeling your face heat up. being exposed in front of someone as smart as satoru was the ultimate humiliation.
"here's what's going to happen. there is an upcoming review test before the final. you pass that and im 99.9 percent sure that you will pass the final with enough studying. I'll leave satoru to decide how the tutoring will work, but I expect you both to meet up at least four times a week."
four times a week? four times? a week. great.
session 1.
you dragged your body into the library with your tote bag full of textbooks and practice worksheets. the library was fairly crowded with students studying for upcoming exams. you being one of them.
making your way deeper into the study area, your eyes landed on gojo who was setting up the table with his headphones plugged in. you approached him but he didn't notice you.
"satoru..?"
no answer. he was in a completely different world with the way he was humming a tune which only brought you to your last resort.
you poked his shoulder lightly which caused him to jump a little, looking over his shoulder to meet eyes with you.
"oh! hi uhm im sorry..! I didn't notice you I was just uh setting up the table. is this place okay with you? we can always pick somewhere else if your uncomfortable with being way too-"
"no no its fine with me." you interrupted his babbling which you found endearing.
"right." he chuckled before sitting down which you followed.
"alright so what exactly are you struggling with?" he asked.
what are you struggling with? "everything" you answered honestly looking at the organized textbooks- all related to physics and.. digimon?
"so.. we can start off with the basics of fundamentals of motion. such as speed and distance and maybe add in some kinematic equations. you are familiar with newtons law, right?"
you nodded as you recalled to the only thing you remembered from this god awful class.
"okay so we can skip that.. but ill still explain a little bit of it towards the end, just to make sure."
that's how you spent your first session with the boy. he's amazing at explaining, learning more from him than any past lectures. the way he is so into it you can't help but space out at the way his lips move.
"for the equations, there are a few of them, ill give you three examples then write one of each so you can practice."
your eyes fixated at the way he neatly wrote down the letters.
"so uhm.. do I multiply or-"
"you subtract this from both sides."
"got it."
this was definitely going to take a while if you couldn't even handle the basics. you handed him back the sheet where you attempted the problems.
"seems like you have a bit of difficulty deriving the equations."
you sighed. how long has it been? forty minutes? and hour?
checking your phone you were surprised to see that only 15 minutes have passed?
'just kill me at this point' you thought.
"hey hey, no phones. can't have you getting distracted, hand it over"
"I was just checking the time! don't take it away pleaseee" you begged.
"you'll be tempted to check the time every five seconds, just hand it over." you reluctantly placed it in his hand. his fingers brushed against yours and you were surprised to see how soft his were.
"lets try again. this time ill watch you solve them so I can see where you start to go wrong."
2 hours have gone by and you finally grasped how to solve the equations involving motion and acceleration.
"good job!" the praise boosted up your confidence. "only took ya thirty practice problems but you got there." he teased as he adjusted his glasses. "thanks satoru." you rolled your eyes at him.
the way you said his name went straight into his head. both of them actually.
"we should wrap it up for today"
he reached into his bag pulling out a few sheets before sliding them to you. "try and finish these by wednesday, which will be our next session. oh-" the pale boy reached for his examples. "use these for reference if you forget again."
accepting the papers, you placed them in your folder before tucking it back into your bag. "thank you, I know i'm not the easiest to teach."
"non sense. you're the first person i've tutored to actually have motivation to learn."
"you've tutored others?" you tilted your head.
"course I have. anyways, study what we've gone over today. here's my phone number-"
"youre going to have to give me back my phone in order for that" you chuckled. it felt like satorus world paused for a second as he saw your smile.
"uh right.. sorry"
it felt great to have your beautiful cellular device in the comfort of your hands.
"I usually ignore my messages.. can I give you my instagram instead?" you asked.
satoru was a bit disappointed to not be able to have your phone number, but your insta was just as good. that way he'd be able to see pictures of you.
you both exchanged users, you with your whopping 2.3k followers and him with his 40. 41 including you.
he noticed that out of the 2.3k people that follow you, you only follow around 90. he felt honored that he would be one of the lucky ones to be blessed with your follow.
"great!" satoru couldn't help the dorky grin that crept up on his face. "text me if you have any issues with the work, mkay?"
multiple sessions have passed.
you felt yourself warm up with the boy, learning more about him and his nerdy interests and the upcoming 'name as many digimon characters as you can' contest that he's pumped for explained the character book you'd see every time you met up at the library.
which you both eventually ditched after accidentally catching a couple doing... activities one shouldn't be doing in a quiet environment.
satoru couldn't help but wish that was you and him.
you both settled for a nearby cafe where he always paid for your drinks and sugary treat which he's memorized by now.
"we should go over the vocabulary today" his fingers skimmed through several papers before pulling one out that had the key to all the words you had to remember.
you were progressing and you felt confident for the review and final which were both in three months.
"here write down the words on a separate sheet and try to answer them to see which you know and which you don't."
outside of your tutor sessions, you began saying hi to each other in the hallways, exchanging small smiles in class, and late night texts.
satoru [ 10: 37 PM]
-you complete the worksheets?
you [ 10: 40 PM]
-hi! I just need to finish up the last one then im all done
satoru [ 10: 41 PM]
-thats good, mind sending me what you've done?
you [ 10 : 45 PM]
-im actually at a party right now..
that led to a scolding from him the next day. he couldn't care less actually no matter how many times he said to restrain yourself from partying for now because of your studies. in reality, he just didn't want any boy to see you wearing whatever revealing outfit you decided to put on.
satoru would be lying that he wouldn't feel the way his inexperienced cock would harden whenever he would see the way your skirt would ride up your thighs as you sat so prettily in front of him.
you were completely unaware of how much you affected the poor boy.
"so how'd the contest go?"
"I won obviously. named all 1400 of em." he put his hands up in victory.
you laughed at how cute you found it. him being proud over beating a bunch of kids?
"what was the price?"
"a limited edition card. super rare by the way, you have like one in a thousand chance of getting it. here! I have it on me actually."
he pulled out a card that resembled Pokemon cards which he would get annoyed when you got the two of them mixed up.
"this is the ghost bt1 diamond. you can pick one out of any Digimon of your opponent or you can delete all the Digimon if they share a name with it."
his eyes lit up whenever he talked about his interests. and you loved that about him.
"sounds cool, how much is it worth?"
"hmm I think like 300 at most."
"yeah well I remember my brother has a Pokemon card that's worth 78 grand."
"do your damn work."
as you prepared to leave, he stopped you.
"here."
he handed you the digimon card making your eyes widen.
"you're giving it to me?"
"mhm, just remembered I already have a similar card that does the exact same as this one. no need for me to have it. besides I think it would look great on your phone case."
now, whenever he takes away your phone for your study time, he can't help but smile when he looked at the card neatly placed inside the clear case with a few stickers around it.
he’d find himself late at night in the comfort of his own dorm, with his hand hesitantly palming his growing bulge at the sight of your story. the picture was of you smiling cutely at the cafe you both went at. a picture he took.
you looked gorgeous. you are gorgeous.
he doesn't remember the last time he's jerked off. maybe once in high school when his favorite cosplayer dressed up as a beloved female character of his?
pulling out his needy length, he imagined it was you. a finger grazed upon his tip smearing the pre-cum a bit as he let out a few whimpers. would you hate him if you saw him like this? all horny and pent up because of your post? or would you help him?
no matter how much he stroked himself, he just couldn't finish. he needed you.
his eyes skimmed through various websites to help his situation out.
‘how to have the best orgasm in your life’
‘best stroking methods’
‘how the female anatomy works and how to pleasure it’
‘man finishes threehu-‘
wait what was that? he scrolls back up a bit clicking on the female anatomy one. he was met with several images. diagrams showing where the most pleasurable part was for a woman.
gojo hasn’t done this much studying since his calculus exam back in elementary. who the hell let’s a seven year old solve that shit?!
by the end of the day, his brain is now stuffed with knowledge on how to pleasure you. still zero clue on how he’s ever going to bust.
2 days.
2 days until you review test and you were.. stressed to say the least. thankfully you have gone over everything from the semester and gojo made sure that you were well prepared even offering to make you a cheat sheet, allowed by the professor, to help you out during the test just in case.
"toru."
fuck. when did you begin calling him that nickname? it made gojo feel lightheaded to the point where he had to grip the end of his chair as you approached him.
"hey I was wondering if we could study at my place tonight?" you asked sweetly.
“your place..? like, where you live?”
“I hope so?” you giggled.
“y-yeah i guess but why?”
you took a seat next to him placing your bag next to your feet on the floor.
“walked past the cafe and saw that it was closed due to some renovations”
“god i hope it’s the bathroom sink. that thing sprayed me”
you both laugh at the memory of him coming out the bathroom with his hair sticking to his forehead and clothes dampened. that was the first time you’ve seen him without his glasses.
you preferred him with them on.
but you couldn’t deny that either way he still looked so handsome especially when he rolled up his now wet sleeves of his black sweater revealing veins that adorned his arms.
“I hope so. anyways I’ll text you the address later.. or actually, we can walk together if you’d like?” you offered and who was he to decline?
“sure sweetheart.”
gojo recently picked up the habit of calling you sweet names which never failed in making your stomach leap in happiness. where’s he get the sudden habit?
‘how to fluster a girl.com’
god knows where.
your house wasn’t far from the campus since you’ve been planning on attending this university ever since you were a kid due to living 20 minutes away at a walking distance.
“my parents are away at a trip so we’ll have the house to ourselves”
fuck yeah.
“they doing a business trip or..?”
“it’s their anniversary. they flew out to france and didn’t even bother inviting me” you rolled your eyes playfully making the pierced boy laugh. he recently switched out his lip piercing after his last one fell off while drinking his coffee.
he took in your house as you arrived. looking at the memories plastered on the walls. this is where you grew up..
“want anything eat?”
you.
he shook his head. “I’m alright, I ate something not long ago.” you hummed while walking upstairs, him trailing behind just to get a glimpse up your skirt seeing the pink laced panties that made him let out a low groan. his pants were uncomfortable by the time you reached your room. it was a warm environment, posters on the walls, stuffed animals on the bed. the bed he would love to fuck you in.
“s’cute” he complimented placing his bag down before he stretched out his lanky body on your bed.
his sweater slipped up a bit revealing his v line as well as his white happy trail. your breath hitched as your eyes trailed down the patch of hair before landing on the raging boner that he had. no way.
was he hard?
despite having past experience yourself, no one has ever made you finish.
gojo propped himself on both his arms. “let’s just review what I taught you at the beginning first to freshen up your memory.” you barely took in anything he said as you approached the bed as well sitting down next to him before you felt bold. you shifted sitting down on his lap instead.
satoru let out a gasp before moaning. his hands found your hips immediately. “fuck.. what are you-“ he was cut off by your subtle grinding.
“we shouldn’t..” your heart sank a bit. “you don’t want this..? I’m just trying to help you toru.”
“I know baby but I haven’t.. well I’m.. I’ve never done t-this before, god..” he mumbled embarrassed. oh so that’s what this is. he’s a virgin. “I don’t mind.. let me help you”
“please-“
“shh..” you tugged at his jeans bringing down to his knees. “You’ve never done this before?” you asked letting your acrylics tease him through his digimon boxers.
“no.. no please fuck..”
his cute whimpers went straight to your heat as you finally tugged down his boxers only to be met with the biggest cock you’ve seen. it slapped his stomach the second it was released. he was thick. the pretty pink tip was slowly turning an angry red color as he panted.
you wrapped your hand around him stroking up and down his base watching him twitch. while keeping eye contact, you let some spit fall down his cock making him moan as you used your drool as lube. his hips bucked up as he felt the warmth of your mouth around him.
“t-that’s it..”
for the first time, your lips met in a sweet and needy kiss, your hand still working wonders on him. he placed a shaking hand on your ass cupping it making sure not to break the heated kiss.
“can.. can you ride me?” the way he asked shyly made you want to ruin him even more. you nodded watching him pull off his sweater. now by all means you had zero clue that this man was built as if god made him with his own hands. you did the same, quickly undressing before he stopped you.
“please.. please keep the panties on”
“you like em?”
“fucking love them.”
after carefully placing a condom you found in your drawer on him, you guided his tip to grind just right against you. “lift up your hips a bit toru.. just move them.. back.. and forth.. good job love”
the praise didn’t help Gojos situation at all. “keep praising me..” at this point his glasses were all fogged up. your finger hooked into your panties slipping them to the side so you could slip his cock in.
“so big..” you cood
“oh god, you’re right.. fuckkk baby wait.. wait wait” he moaned filling up the room with lewd noises. the plap, plap, plap echoed. large hands found your waist helping you ride him at a quick pace.
“shit.. you’re better than I imagined.” he groaned out biting your neck sweetly. “you’ve imagined.. this? ngh!” you were surprised to see him pick up the pace. “all the time.”
gojo thought back to the website he visited frequently. his finger found your clit circling it before rubbing it repeatedly. you head fell on his shoulder as you began to shake from overstimulation. “Toru..!”
“this is where you’re weak, right? most girls have an orgasm immediately after teasing the clit”
“ngh.. nerd..!”
“so sensitive”
the raspiness in his voice was enough to make you finish. for the first time ever. gojos hips stuttered as he pulled out watching your juices spill out. he brought his fingers to his mouth tasting you. “you taste good babe”
panting, you removed the condom from his still hard length before slipping him back in.
he wasn’t even half way in before ropes of cum went inside you making gojo close his eyes letting tears of being overstimulated fall down his pretty flushed cheeks.
“be my girl..”
four things happened that day.
you came for the first time
you took away gojos virginity
you were both now dating
you didn’t study at all
but the cheat sheet did help you out a bit. after finishing up the last question, gojo walked over to the teachers desk placing it on top of it. he was the first one out of everyone to finish, like always. he looked up to where you were seated.
there you were, more focused than ever biting your nail as you answered the equations as if it was muscle memory. he was proud, smiling to himself before leaving the classroom.
toru ! [ 7: 45 AM ]
-results are in today 👀
you [ 7:46 AM]
-im nervous… i think i failed it bro im so scared toru
toru ! [ 7: 48 AM]
-I doubt that sweetheart
and he was right because the second you received back your paper with a beautiful 92% written on top of it you felt like you were in heaven. you ran towards gojo wrapping your arms around him excitedly.
“I did it! look!” you showed him your paper.
“told you. good job am proud of ya” he grinned as he once again felt his cock throb at the way you were squeezing him. “what’d you get?”
“100%”
“show off.”
he barked out a laugh before placing his hands on your hips. “we should celebrate.” he suggested. “with cake?” he hummed tucking a strand of loose hair behind your ear before letting his thumb rub on your cheek affectionately. “sure pretty.”

Synopsis: A simple favor turns chaotic when (Y/N) delivers Bokuto's lunch.
*✧・゚: *✧・゚:
As (Y/N) was getting ready for school, he heard his phone vibrate. He checked it and saw a message from his boyfriend:
"(Y/N), I FORGOT MY LUNCH ON MY TABLE. CAN YOU BRING IT TO ME, PRETTY PLEASE?"
He sighed, rolling his eyes, but decided to stop by Bokuto’s house-thankfully, it was nearby-before heading to school. Luckily, he had a spare key Bokuto’s mom had given him, since they spent so much time together.
He arrived at school early and made his way to the gym where Bokuto was. Standing outside, he texted him to come grab his lunch, but after a few minutes with no response, he gave up and slowly opened the door.
As he peeked his head inside, a volleyball smacked him right in the face, making him hiss in pain.
"Fuck..." he muttered, eyes closed, holding his head.
When he finally looked up, he realized everyone in the gym was staring at him. Flustered by all the attention, he gave them an awkward smile.
Just as the silence became unbearable, Bokuto and Akaashi came back from the locker room. Noticing their teammates frozen in place, they followed their gazes and saw (Y/N).
Prepared for what was coming, Akaashi casually plugged his ears.
"OMG (Y/N)!! WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY YOU WERE HERE?!"
(Y/N) didn’t even flinch, used to his boyfriend’s volume.
"I did text you, dumbass!" he said, pouting a little.
Before Bokuto could reply, (Y/N) handed him the lunch.
"Here. Next time, don’t forget it so I don’t have to go through that again." He turned around and headed to class without another word.
As Bokuto turned to face the rest of the team, he noticed all of them staring at him, confused. One finally voiced what they were all thinking.
"Who was that?"
Everyone nodded, clearly curious.
"Oh, that’s my boyfriend!" Bokuto replied proudly. "He’s cute, right?"
"WAIT, WHAT?!"
Akaashi stepped forward, wearing his usual bored expression.
"Yes. That’s his boyfriend. And I have to deal with the two of them being all lovey dovey every day. Unfortunately."
"That's not true... I don't see what you're talking about..." Bokuto said with a guilty smile.
Akaashi just stared at him, silent, while the rest of the team exchanged shocked glances, wondering how they'd missed such a major piece of gossip.
After the initial shock wore off, training resumed like usual. When the day ended, (Y/N) waited outside at the school gate, just like Bokuto had asked.
As soon as Bokuto saw him, he ran over him.
"(Y/N)!!" he shouted, pulling him into a big hug.
"Babe… people are watching. Can you not?"
Pouting, Bokuto let go and turned back to his team.
"So, guys, this is (Y/N), my boyfriend as you saw this morning. I know he’s cute, handsome, charming, and smart, but don’t even think about flirting with him," he said, shooting a glare at everyone.
(Y/N) sighed for the second time that day and gave him a light slap on the shoulder.
"Shut up. I told you to stop saying cringe things."
Turning to the team, he added, "Anyway, nice to meet you all, but I’m really tired-and we have to study for the exam, don’t we, Bokuto?" he said with a small smirk.
Bokuto’s smile dropped instantly.
"Aww, babe… can’t we do something else? It's not even exam week yet..." he pleaded with a nervous grin.
"No."
And with that, (Y/N) took Bokuto’s hand and led him back home, where they spent the next two hours reviewing their notes—while Bokuto complained every two minutes, asking his boyfriend when it would finally be over.

I Can See You: Chapter 8 (Ellie Willaims, TLOU)

I Can See You
Fic master post here
*Not beta read
It’s been over a month, and I am so sorry! I’ll have a little life update at the end in case anyone cares lol. Thank you to everyone for your patience and support:)
Chapter 8
Your first date with Ellie, who is officially your girlfriend:)
Word count: 4k
CW: *Ellie and reader are both 18*, profanities, sexual innuendo/references, briefly talking about food
Deep breath in.
An hour until Ellie picks you up for your first date. The hottest girl in school, the hottest girl you’ve ever seen.
Deep breath out.
Time to get ready, time to get perfect.
Before washing your face you splash cold water on it first to focus. This is actually happening, it’s not some elaborate day dream.
The normal skin care routine first, then all the makeup and prep you would usually do for a date or party. A tried and true hairstyle that always looks good on you.
Hours had been spent picking out an outfit the night before. Changing into it, you look in the mirror and adjust yourself until your appearance is deemed perfect.
The buzzing of your phone continues the whole time you get ready, the group chat wanting to hear more about Ellie and the date. They get an answer here and there.
Caroline is protective as usual, telling you not to fall for any of Ellie’s tricks, or let her turn you into some elaborately planned one night stand.
Melissa was getting intel from her sister, since she is on the lacrosse team. The locker room was full of whispers about you and Ellie after the game. The underclassmen who don’t know Ellie as well thought the whole thing was cute and romantic. The upperclassmen are a little more divided. Some of them feel bad for you, assuming that it won’t go well. Abby and her friends think Ellie is doing it all to spite her. The rest are hopeful that this will mark the official end of all the Ellie girl drama they’ve been so happy without over the last month.
Nicole is the most nonchalant. Knowing how strong and smart you are, she doesn’t question whether or not you can handle yourself. Though she doesn’t understand it, she knows the effect that you can have on women. If anyone can change Ellie, it’s you. In all honesty, Nicole is most excited to hear your review of the new restaurant more than anything else.
Then there is sweet, sweet Teresa. Bless her heart she is so excited for you. Asking for pictures of your outfit, hyping you up, and telling you how cute you and Ellie are together.
Ellie rings the doorbell at 7:00 on the dot.

When you open the door she offers her hand for you to take. “Hello beautiful,” she smiles and drags you into a kiss. Her soft lips welcome you like you’ve just arrived home. She smells good, having just sprayed her perfume. The earthy and woodsy notes have become so familiar. The scent is strong as it washes over you, fogging out everything but Ellie.
Ellie leads you down the steps but she isn’t looking forwards, but back at you. Taking you in, looking you up and down… there are stars in her pretty green eyes.
“You got all dressed up for me,” she points out, admiring all the effort you put into your appearance. “You look great. Well you always do, just a little fancier tonight.”
“Thanks, you know you look pretty good yourself?” You giggle.
Ellie, with a slight blush in her cheeks, opens the passenger door of her beat up pickup truck and helps you in. Sitting down herself, she plugs in her phone and turns the music low enough to talk over it, but it’s still loud enough to make out the song that’s playing. She’s playing your favorite song.
Backing the car up and putting it into drive, Ellie puts her hand on your thigh. But she doesn’t just let it rest there. She grasps your leg so that she isn’t simply touching you, she is holding onto you.
A smirk creeps up on your face when you take a moment to look at Ellie’s hand. Her veins are well defined. Her fingers are long, adorned with silver rings.
This small gesture, it’s protective. Possessive. It has your heart beating like you’ve just run a marathon.
After the car stops you go to open the door but Ellie puts out a hand to stop you. “I’ll get it for you.”
Your face warms and you busy your hands by adjusting your clothes. It’s not that you hadn’t expected chivalry from Ellie, it’s just causing butterflies in your stomach now that it's your first date and it’s actually happening.
Ellie opens the door and once again takes your hand to help you get out. Her hand is a little sweaty. Is she nervous too? THE Ellie Williams, feeling this way about you?
Walking into the restaurant hand in hand is a surreal experience. You catch a glimpse of your reflection in a window. The reflection of a cute couple is mirrored back.
The hostess seats you at a quiet spot in the back corner. It’ll be a nice place to just talk and enjoy each other's company without any prying eyes.
Sitting across from Ellie, you find yourself admiring her beauty, as always. Like a song you can listen to on repeat for hours. It’s something you’ve done a thousand times and will continue doing. The way freckles are dusted over her fair skin and a faint flush colors her cheeks. How her lips curve into an adorable grin. That sparkle in her eyes.
“I’m so happy to be here with you baby,” Ellie tells you with a hint of shyness “to be your girlfriend.”
“B-baby?” You stutter, surprised by the replacement of the word ‘babe’ with ‘baby’. The word itself feels more significant, as well as the way she says it. It holds a certain conviction.
Ellie looks down and starts fiddling with one of her rings. “I feel like ‘babe’ is too casual. You’re not just some girl, you’re my girl. You mean so much to me.”
“I like that,” you tell her, placing your hands on top of hers. Ellie looks up at you, meeting your gaze, and her posture relaxes with the familiar feeling of your touch.
“We should probably look at the menu,” Ellie says, though clearly not wanting to let go of you yet. Nodding, you use your free hand to pick the menu up so you don’t have to let go of her. She follows suit, and you both reluctantly look away from each other and at the menu.
The waitress takes your drink order while you look over the menu.
“It was nice to meet Joel,” you tell Ellie after taking a first glance at everything.
Ellie peers over the menu with a relieved smile. “I’m happy you got to meet him. It was nice to meet your friends too.”
That receives a chuckle in response. “You don’t have to lie, baby. They weren’t particularly nice to you.”
“They were just being protective. I think it’s good that your friends care so much. So tell me, what did they think? I’m sure they had something to say.” Ellie questions cautiously, putting down her menu to give the conversation her full attention. She laces her fingers through yours to properly hold your hand.
After tilting your head to the side and taking a moment to go over everything they have said you giggle and admit “they don’t know what to expect.”
Ellie’s free hand nervously grabs the back of her neck. “That’s my fault isn’t it.”
Squeezing her hand for reassurance softens the worry in her eyes.“It’s just as much my fault. I obviously hadn’t told them it was you I was talking to, but I didn’t really tell them anything. Just that she played lacrosse and went to North, half of it was a lie. I told them there was a girl and that was all I gave them aside from them seeing those hickies on my neck. So when I was like ‘surprise, the girl I’ve been hiding is my girlfriend and actually you all know who she is.’ I was already on thin ice for hiding things from them.”
Ellie nods sympathetically. “You are very close to them, makes sense that they don’t like you keeping secrets. Especially when the secret has the reputation it does.”
Smirking, you tell her “believe it or not, they were way more chill when they talked to you than when I first broke the news.”
The look on her face is one of disbelief. “Seriously? That was them being ‘more chill’?”
“Yeah,” you laugh, seeing the reaction it got from her. “They didn’t even believe me. At first I just told them it was a lacrosse player from our school. They guessed everyone but you and assumed there was a sapphic they didn’t know about before they even considered you.”
Ellie’s eyes narrow. “So they asked about Anderson?”
Biting your lip, you give her the truth. “That was their first guess.”
She looks both offended and disappointed. “They didn’t even guess me? Why not? Am I not good enough?”
Squeezing her hand and giving her a gentle smile, you try and help her relax. “No, they knew that before now you didn’t do relationships.”
Ellie's expression is one of extreme embarrassment. “Oh. Wow,” is all that she can say, and it sounds strained.
But her expression softens with the way you look into her eyes with deep compassion. “I told them that you aren’t like that anymore. That you’ve changed.”
Her posture straightens and her attitude perks up.“I have.”
“I know that baby. They’ll see,” you promise her.
“I’ll do whatever it takes.” Ellie is dead serious. It’s obvious that she is devoted.
“I know you will. You are going to impress them. They’ve already started to warm up a little, even if it doesn’t seem like it yet. You actually won Teresa over already.”
Ellie lets out a long breath and smiles. “Tell Teresa that I say thank you. And that she’s a saint.”
“She was very impressed by your romantic gestures and hard launch,” you giggle.
Seeing you giggle melts Ellie’s heart. “I’m glad she appreciated it. But I wasn’t trying to impress anyone except you. I just wanted to show you how much I care about you.”
“Melissa and Nicole should be easy to win over,” you assure her. “Jackie, Melissa’s sister, is the new freshman on varsity. Just make sure she feels welcome and is adjusting okay. Nicole? She likes Dunkin’ Donuts.”
Ellie’s nod is dutiful, she gives you a salute. “Be nice to the new girl on the team, get an extra coffee when I stop there for you. I’ve got it covered.”
“That’s 75% of the friend group!”
“And the other 25%?”
“Caroline is very stubborn,” you sigh.
“Tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” Ellie is very eager.
“Well, being nice to Jackie will give you some bonus points. Maybe give you, I don’t know, 7%. Doesn’t matter how many times she is told that you’ve changed, she needs to see it. Actions speak louder than words with Caroline. I think that seeing you treat me well over time is what it’s going to take,” you explain to her.
Ellie nods, looking determined. “I’m going to treat you well. Treat you the best. Everyone will see how much you mean to me.”
“You’re sweet Ellie,” you smile at her.
She squeezed your hand. “You are.”
“Sweet enough that your friends approve?”
“Well you talked to Paz. I only bothered to talk to my other best friends,” Ellie explains.
Brooke, Anna, Danny, Tim and Mark. Brooke is a soccer player, Anna plays volleyball. Extremely popular, effortlessly beautiful, exceedingly influential. Danny and Mark are lacrosse bros, Tim plays football. Seemingly douche bags, but not the worst of the worst. Brooke and Danny have been an item since freshman year, but Mark is a player like Ellie. Like Ellie was.
You look at Ellie expectantly.
“I’ll start with the good news. Brooke and Danny seem excited for someone else in the group to be in a relationship. Mark is disappointed that I won’t be playing the field anymore. He also asked why you….” Ellie trails off.
Smiling at Ellie, you reassure her. “You can tell me the truth.
“Mark wondered why if I was going to have a girlfriend why not… a girl we usually hang out with.” Ellie bites her lip. “I told him how great you are, he’s coming around.”
She doesn’t say anything else, just nervously focuses on her menu.
“Don’t worry, Ellie. I’m not offended or anything. What about Anna and Tim?”
She takes a deep breath. “They, uh, will be harder to convince. They think you are using me, that you’ve got an ulterior motive. They think that since you are smart you must have manipulated me into a relationship, that’s why you are the only one to ever get me to settle down.”
The stress on her face melts away when you squeeze her hand and give her a soothing smile. “That’s not unfair, they are just looking out for you, the same way my friends are looking out for me. You’re acting different, it makes sense that they would question why.”
Ellie nods. “I’ve changed for the better.”
“I know that, soon they will too.”
“So uh… do you want an appetizer?”
After ordering you decide to lighten the mood and tease Ellie. “You never told me you had noticed me before I became your tutor.”
“Well yeah, of course I did. Just look at you,” she chuckles. “First time I noticed you, Paz said it wasn’t worth it, that you’re smart and you’d know better. I was too much of a horny little shit not to listen to her. Then any time I looked at you over the years those words were in the back of my mind.”
“I guess that’s fair enough. So what was different this time?” This is something you’ve been dying to know. What changed?
“When I used to play the field, I would flirt with every girl the same. Talk about lacrosse, all the championships I’ve won. But you didn’t give a shit.” Ellie laughs and starts tracing circles on your hand with her thumb. “I’d never met a girl that wasn’t impressed by that stuff. You weren’t condescending, even though you could have been. It was your job to help me… but it was more than a job to you. Nothing about you was shallow, it was impossible for me to be, even though I normally was. I was starting to feel all that when we played that guessing game. So when I looked into those pretty eyes of yours, after you made me guess what color they were? It was all over for me.”
Once the waitress has served your food and walks away Ellie clears her throat. “Can I… take a picture of you? To put on my story… I wanna show you off.” She’s never sounded so shy before.
Biting your smile and nodding, you tease her “you know we don’t even follow eachother on social media?”
Ellie’s eyes widen. “We have to fix that right now.” She’s dead serious, even has a sense of urgency. She passes you her phone so you can add each other. On every form of social media, she insists on it. While on Ellie’s phone you see that she has a space aesthetic as her background.

“I like your wallpaper,” you comment while switching from one app to another. “Very space nerd of you.”
“Hey- it’s a nice wallpaper!” Ellie defends herself with a sheepish smile.
With a smile on your face you let her know you’re only teasing “Baby, I think it’s cute. It’s very you.” After finishing the social media following Ellie takes back her phone when it’s held out to her.
“Now can I take your picture?” Ellie questions eagerly, like a kid asking for a cookie.
“Only if I can take one of you too,” you giggle.
Ellie asks you to pose for the picture, but even when you do, her smile is still bigger than yours.
“Can I see?” Ellie playfully rolls her eyes when you request to see the picture before she posts it.
“You look perfect, but I guess,” she chuckles, turning her phone. Your eyes are full of joy, a cheesy but genuine smile with a hint of a giggle. “Do you approve?” Ellie teases.
Nodding your approval you smirk at her and unlock your own phone. “My turn!”
Watching Ellie pose awkwardly and fixing her hair? It’s possibly the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. Her freckled cheeks are flushed pink and she smiles bashfully. When you snap the picture you know that it’s your new favorite.
The both of you post the photos on your stories, all smiles and excitement to be showing eachother off.
“Now that we have followed each other on social media, and posted each other… I realized that I still have you as ‘tutor girl’ in my phone.” Ellie bites her lip.
You start giggling. “And I’ve still got you in my phone as ‘space nerd’, we should probably change that.”
Ellie raises an eyebrow. “Going to add some cute little emojis or something?”
“Of course, and the picture I just took as your contact photo.” The two of you change what you need to in your phone and put them back away. To enjoy each other's company.
“Should we get desert?” You ask after you both finish your dinner.
Ellie smirks. “Well I have movie tickets for us, so you might want to save room for snacks.”
“What are we seeing?” You question with eager enthusiasm.
“Do you remember that one movie you mentioned?” Ellie asks, not sure if you actually would.
“You remembered?” That movie came up in conversation very briefly, but Ellie does remember the little things.
“Of course I did. I always pay attention to everything you tell me. Sometimes I write stuff down if I think I might need it later.”
“Like how you took a picture of my Dunkin’ order. Before we even started dating,” you laugh.
“We weren’t dating but I wanted to impress you. I was kind of dating you in my mind before we made things official…” Ellie blushes.
Ellie insists on paying the bill instead of splitting it and you leave to go to the movie theater.
“Baby, what do you want?” She asks at the concessions counter.
“Um… I’m not sure. I kind of want candy but I also kind of want popcorn.”
“Then get both,” Ellie says nonchalantly.
You shake your head and laugh. “I don’t need both.”
“But you want both, so I’m getting you both. I already know your favorite candy so you can’t stop me,” she smirks. “Anything to drink?”
“Hmm… I want to get a slushy. But water is better for eating popcorn, so I’ll get water.”
“What flavor slushy do you like?” Ellie smirks.
You softly elbow her in the side. “Ellie you don’t need to get me both.”
“Yes I do!” She pouts.
“Blue raspberry,” you sigh.
Ellie orders everything and insists on paying for it once again because ‘she was the one that asked you to go on the date’. You made it clear you won’t let her always pay for everything and that you plan to spoil her any chance you get. Ellie also tries to carry everything by herself, but you take the drinks so that nothing gets spilled.
In the theater you sit in the back row. While organizing the snacks and drinks Ellie put up the arm rest between you. “The water bottle has a lid, it can go anywhere. I, however, can't go anywhere. I have to be as close to you as possible.”
Getting comfortable during the previews Ellie wraps her arm around you and you lean into her, resting your head in her shoulder. She kisses the top of your head and gives you a squeeze. You chat before the movie starts, trading starry eyed smiles.
Once the movie starts the two of you quiet down. Every once in a while you feel Ellie move a little, and eventually you realize it’s to look at you. She’ll stop watching the movie for a few minutes so she can stare at you, and then she has to ask what she missed after starting to pay attention again. Occasionally, Ellie will subconsciously kiss the top of your head.
At one point she leans over and says “I want to put you in my lap and kiss you but I don’t want to do that on our first date. I want to treat you like a lady.” That makes you giggle. Hearing your laugh makes Ellie’s smile even brighter, it makes her want a kiss so badly, it’s visible in her pretty green eyes.
At the end of the movie you walk out with Ellie, hand and hand. You see a few people from school and you catch their attention, but that doesn’t even matter when the date is going so well. You and Ellie pay them no mind.
Ellie parks in your driveway and turns the key in the ignition.
The urge to tease Ellie was too strong to resist. “I made it out alive.”
She just smirks “You aren’t out of the car yet.”
“Plan on killing me?” You laugh.
Ellie’s eyes narrow seductively. “Well I plan on taking your breath away.”
Before meeting Ellie this hot to nerdy loser ratio didn’t seem possible. How can she look so unbearably hot while saying something so incredibly cheesy? Now isn’t the time to try and figure that out. “Then get to it, Williams.”
Ellie leans over the center console to cup your face in one of her hands. The other finds itself on the inside of your thigh. She closes her eyes so you follow suit, she lets her lips slowly find yours. She isn’t gentle for long. Ellie starts soft but abruptly deepens the kiss, as if intending to hold back and subsequently failing. Her grip on your thigh tightens but instead of pulling you towards her she presses further into you, practically crawling over the center console.
“Ellie,” you whisper breathlessly, “come here.” Grabbing onto her and roping her in, she climbs over the center console and clumsily falls into your lap. One of her hands tangles into your hair and the other goes right for your chest while her lips find yours once again.
You reach for Ellie’s shirt to try and pull it off, but she stops you.
“Are you okay?” You ask breathlessly, face red and worried.
“Good, so good,” Ellie nods with a smile.
“Then why did you stop?” You ask, holding her face in your hands to get a good look at her expression.
“We are in a car. Before this we’ve messed around in the library, and a classroom. You deserve better than this. We deserve better than this. If we keep going… I’m not going to want to stop, and we can’t have our first time together in a car.”
You brush a piece of hair out of Ellie’s face. “You’re right. I want our first time to be special*
Ellie cups your face with a gentle hand and gives you a sweet kiss before climbing back into the driver's seat. She takes your hand in hers, intensely holding your gaze. “You’re special. And perfect. And beautiful.”
Blushing, you nervously adjust your shirt for a distraction and look down.
With her index finger on your chin, Ellie tips your face back up. “I mean it!”
“I know you do,” you smile softly, “you’re sweet.”
Ellie chuckles, “I’m just telling the truth.”
Beaming at her, looking into those beautiful eyes, you run a hand through her auburn hair. “You are pretty great too. Beautiful, flawless, extraordinary.” Ellie’s eyes widened, but they are starting to look a little sleepy. Her tiredness is evident. “You had a long day, I’m sure you want to get home and wind down.”
“But that would mean leaving you,” she pouts.
That makes you laugh. “You’re going to have to do that eventually.”
Ellie’s freckles nose scrunches up, brows furrowed. She’s unwilling to accept that.
“We can hang out again tomorrow,” you promise her, running your index finger along her jawline.
“I’m going to a party tomorrow tonight, do you want to come with me?” She’s hesitant but hopeful.
“Is it the one at Kyle’s? My friends want to go because ‘everyone’ is going to be there.”
“Yes, actually!” Excited surprise lights up her face.
“So, you gonna be my date to the party?” Ellie practically begs.
You smirk. “Is that an invitation?”
“Of course it is! I want my beautiful girlfriend by my side.”
Ellie walks you to your door and kisses you goodnight, you make her promise to text you when she gets home safe.
(Space aesthetic wallpaper and Ellie’s outfit are from Pinterest)
I didn’t mean for it to take this long😭 Here it is in chronological order: I went to see my girlfriend and got to meet her daughter for the first time (it was the best day ever). I got sick for a while:( I took a spontaneous trip to see my bestie who lives in Chicago (I live in NY) and then got sick again. My ex (that I’ve been broken up with for over a year but hurt me so bad) texted me confessing her love a week after I posted my girlfriend for the first time and it fucked with my head for a bit lol. Also, I also got a part time job, and I like it a lot! So I’ve been working along with studying for my professional engineer license. I had some issues with filling prescriptions/getting my medications (for mental health) and that really threw me for a loop. I’m hoping now that I’m into the swing of things with work and things have seemed to settle down I’ll have more time to write!! It’s been a lot besties and I’m doing my best😂

Hello there!
I'd like to know your advice on drawing tablets?
As in, what do you use for your digital art? Is there any you suggest?
I'm planning on getting one, but there are so many options, and I'd like to know your opinion and preference.
Thank you ^^
hi anon! thanks for the question!
i draw with a samsung galaxy tab s7!
BUT if this is your first time drawing digitally, then it's a good idea to test out if you like it with cheaper options first (so you don't drop a whole lot of money on a hobby/medium of art you don't enjoy)
some suggestions:
if you have a smart phone, try drawing with your finger using free to use drawing apps like ibispaint X or HiPaint (i recommend HiPaint cuz the UI is a lot simpler and less overwhelming, but both have a good selection of tools. i wanna say ibispaint has better text tools tho and there's A LOT more tutorials and resources online) drawing digitally with your finger is different from drawing digitally with a pen AND drawing traditionally, but this is a good way to familiarize yourself with digital art tools. a very simple entry point if you already have a smart phone.
if you don't want to draw with your finger (understandable, i personally couldn't stand it) you can try simple drawing tablets, which are the tablets that you plug into your computer/laptop, come with a pen, but they don't have a screen you draw directly on. they're actually a lot more affordable nowadays (i saw some for under $50 CAD, which is WILD), so that’s a good starting option if you want to draw with a pen. with a pen, you have more control with line weights than you do with your finger, but it takes practice to get used to. it also takes some getting use to drawing on a tablet and looking at your monitor, but this is where i started haha. i still have my old bamboo wacom create drawing tablet. but nowadays, other brands like xp-pen and huion are very comparable to wacom, so definitely consider getting a cheaper one to try out first. of course, if you go with a drawing tablet, you'll need an art program on your computer. i've used photoshop and clip studio paint and they're very good, but probably overwhelming for people who are new to digital art (they are loaded with tools and you have to really familiarize yourself with the menus and everything). there are probably simpler options available... but i'm not as familiar with them. oh wait, i think there are some drawing tablets that can also connect with your smart phone too nowadays. man, that's so cool. that's probably a better option instead of purchasing photoshop or clip studio paint right off the bat.
if you REALLY want a screen display experience, try a cheaper general tablet. iPads are a popular option if you're comfortable with the Apple ecosystem (i'm not 😅) but they can be pricey PLUS you have to buy the Apple pen separately. for Android, I'm pretty sure even the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is a solid choice and it comes with a pen unlike an iPad. the SPen is built with Wacom tech, so you know it's quality. and while iPad has Procreate, HiPaint is available for Android and it's basically a Procreate clone (i explain more about HiPaint here) otherwise, ibisPaint X is also good and infinite painter is probably the most sophisticated free to use drawing app i've encountered (sophisticated as in it does a pretty good job at imitating traditional media in their brushes. it's cool, but the free version is very limited).
also if you like watching videos, Brad Colbow and Teoh on Tech on YouTube are great resources. they specifically review tech from an artist's perspective.
why i suggest testing it out is because if you're used to drawing traditionally, then switching to digital is a different experience. some artists can't get used to drawing digitally, and that's fine. that's why it's a good idea to test it out with a cheaper option first to see if you like it and to give yourself time to familiarize yourself with drawing apps/programs. i actually kinda hated drawing digitally at first. i didn't have the same level of control that i was used to with drawing traditionally. and overtime i made a lot of bad habits with my digital art that i had to unlearn by switching back to traditional art for a couple years (some bad habits like: relying on the Undo button to make "perfect" lines; trying to draw really fast because the pen glides over the screen unlike a pencil has friction against paper) so... give it a try and just let yourself have fun. don't worry about making anything perfect, just have fun!
#ask the crab#i hope you have fun!#i first got my bamboo wacom tablet in 2011#and it's still very good#i use my samsung tablet now because i really like the screen display experience#and the fact i can bring it with me on the go without my laptop#i like digital art#but i'll still occasionally switch to traditional art#that's how i deal with art block#i switch something up and just experiment with a different medium for a little while#that gets me out of the perfectionist mindset too#i can't spam the undo button if there's no undo button with pen and paper#the reason why i switched to digital art recently was because i was struggling with sketching with traditional art a little while back#i was designing a new DCA OC with a body type i am not familiar with drawing#and it was just getting frustrating trying to get the body shape right#so i took a break and switched to drawing chibis in digital art so i could give myself a refresh#i eventually was able to design that character#but i did it digitally#i'll share him soon#i haven't really decided on an outfit for him yet

Song Review: Trey Anastasio Band feat. Derek Trucks - “Set Your Soul Free” (Live, 2019)
When Derek Trucks plugged in, the Trey Anastasio Band was temporarily - though not officially - transformed into the Anastasio Trucks Band.
This occurred on a collaborative version of “Set Your Soul Free” that took place at the 2019 Lockn’ festival in Virginia and found Trucks seamlessly sliding himself into TAB’s tapestry.
It’s a funky, nothing-matters-but-this-right-here-right-now song, an idea that survives the half-decade delay in its arrival on professional video as Anastasio and his bandmates sing:
Burn it down, burn it down/set your soul free/we’re all here together/in a spirit family/everybody’s dancing/everyone can see/burn it down, burn it down/set your soul free
Stupid though the words may be, the wordless conversion between Trucks and Anastasio’s axes is sublime. And the Band proves that even stupid songs can be presented in ways that sound pretty damn smart.

Artificial Intelligence is more than just a buzzword—it's a powerful force shaping the way we work, live, and connect. As businesses and professionals navigate the rapidly changing digital landscape, AI integration has become not only an advantage but a necessity. From automating repetitive tasks to streamlining communication, AI is transforming the workplace—and now is the time to plug in.
What Is AI Integration?
AI integration refers to the process of embedding intelligent technology into your current systems and workflows. Instead of replacing human effort, it enhances capabilities by analysing data, learning patterns, and optimising operations in real-time. For professionals and organisations alike, this means better decisions, faster execution, and improved customer experiences.
Why Embrace AI Today?
Here’s how AI integration is making a difference across industries:
Improved Efficiency
With AI handling time-consuming tasks like email filtering, data analysis, and scheduling, teams can focus on what truly matters—innovation and human connection.
Smarter Decisions
AI can process huge amounts of information quickly, offering insights that help businesses make better, data-backed choices.
Digital Strength
Today’s digital-first world demands a solid online presence. AI tools play a major role in Digital Presence Management, from optimising search visibility to curating consistent social media content.
Personal Branding
Professionals and entrepreneurs are increasingly using AI-powered personal branding tools to craft compelling bios, automate content creation, and engage with audiences more effectively.
B2B Strategy
In a competitive market, B2B branding strategy supported by AI helps teams personalise outreach, understand client behaviour, and build stronger relationships.
Getting Started With AI Integration
Adopting AI doesn’t require a tech overhaul. Start with tools you may already be using:
Leverage Smart Features: Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Canva now include AI suggestions, writing assistants, and design tools.
Automate with Purpose: Platforms like Zapier or Make.com allow easy automation between your favourite apps and services.
Explore Industry Tools: If you’re in marketing, explore ChatGPT or Jasper for content. If you’re in customer service, check out AI-enabled platforms like Intercom or Drift.
Best Practices for a Smooth Transition
Educate Your Team: Offer basic training so everyone feels confident using AI tools.
Start with a Small Project: Test out AI on a single workflow, such as automating social media or customer queries.
Maintain Human Oversight: Always review AI outputs for accuracy and relevance.
Key Takeaways
AI integration is no longer optional—it's essential. Whether you're looking to improve productivity, enhance brand visibility, or gain a competitive edge, integrating AI is a smart step forward.

Your guide to California policy and politics

By Lynn La

Good morning, California.
CA’s roller coaster economy under Trump

When Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out his revised state budget proposal last week, he emphasized how President Donald Trump and his administration made forecasting California’s economic future even harder. To see that chaotic uncertainty in action, all one needs to look at is the daily investment returns posted by the California Public Employees’ Retirement System.
As of Friday morning the nation’s largest public pension fund, CalPERS, has a total market value of $539 billion. But in the days following “Liberation Day,” when Trump first imposed his tariffs on April 2, CalPERS losses hovered around $25 billion. In the first two days alone, CalPERS lost $15 billion, while the stock market experienced a $6.6 trillion wipeout.
The pension fund’s bounceback from a $508 billion-low on April 7 could be attributed to Trump easing off his most severe tariffs and making a deal with China to pause the highest tariffs for 90 days.
But more volatility is likely on the horizon: In an April board meeting, CalPERS CEO Marcie Frost said the agency is keeping its “eyes on the road ahead as we navigate all the twists and turns of the current time.”
Frost: “Global economies expand or contract for a variety of reasons. But we must prepare for the possibility that current events here in the U.S. could have a serious impact on our investment returns as of June 30 and into the fiscal year that begins after that.”
Meanwhile, Newsom described Trump’s tariff rollout as “remarkably inconsistent,” and to plug California’s $12 billion budget hole, the governor is proposing controversial shifts in funding that are drawing ire from advocates and stakeholders:
Health care: Newsom wants to use $1.6 billion from Proposition 35 — which voters approved in November to increase the pay of doctors who treat Medi-Cal patients — toward the deficit. He also wants to move $500 million initially earmarked to support family planning and women’s health care to the state’s general fund. Both proposals are getting pushback from doctors, hospitals and clinics, which argue that it is wrong to reroute money voters set aside for specific health costs. Read more from CalMatters’ Kristen Hwang.
Climate projects: In addition to extending California’s cap and trade program through 2045, Newsom wants to commit more than half of the money it generates this year, or roughly $4.8 billion, to Cal Fire operations and the High-Speed Rail Project. The cap and trade program has provided billions of dollars for projects aimed at combating climate change. Critics of Newsom’s proposal say moving the money would mean limiting resources for the state’s other environmental efforts, such as reducing emissions from gas-powered cars. Read more from CalMatters’ Alejandro Lazo.
On Saturday the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office released its review of the governor’s updated state budget plan. Though it projects a $14 billion deficit, the analyst’s office considers Newsom’s “spending reductions appropriate.”
Join CalMatters and Evident in Bakersfield on Wednesday for a screening of Operation: Return to Sender, a short documentary uncovering what really happened during a three-day Border Patrol raid in Bakersfield. After the film, CalMatters’ Sergio Olmos and others will discuss what the team uncovered and what it means for immigration enforcement. Register today or attend our Los Angeles screening on Thursday.

What can high school grads wear?

Two months ago, the Trump administration said it would withhold federal funding to school districts that promote diversity, equity and inclusion through clubs, activities and graduation ceremonies. Though a judge has since temporarily blocked that order and California is filing a separate lawsuit to stop the order, one state lawmaker wants to make it easier for students to wear tribal or other cultural regalia at graduation.
As CalMatters’ Carolyn Jones explains, a bill by Democratic Assemblymember James Ramos of San Bernardino would eliminate the pre-approval process for students who want to wear cultural regalia — Native American or otherwise — at graduation. Native students, families and tribes say schools require notice too far in advance because students often receive their regalia on graduation day, sometimes as a gift from a grandparent or tribal elder. This can be stressful for students on graduation day, since they’re unsure whether they’ll be allowed to wear the regalia.
Jennie Rocha, who graduated from Clovis North High School last year, said she was nervous arriving at graduation because she wore a Comanche stole that the school had initially denied.
Rocha: “I wanted to wear it because I feel like everything I have is because of the Comanche. I wouldn’t be able to go to college without their support.”
But schools argue they need a pre-approval process for all students to ensure the regalia are respectful and appropriate.

Public silenced at bill hearings

Legislators listen to speakers during an informational hearing at the state Capitol in Sacramento on March 12, 2024. Photo by Fred Greaves for CalMatters
As state legislators wade through the more than 2,000 bills they introduced this year, residents from across the state who travel to Sacramento to speak in support or opposition of those proposals can sometimes find themselves given just a few seconds to speak or silenced altogether, write CalMatters’ Ryan Sabalow and Hans Poschman.
In the past two months, there have been at least a dozen examples of committee leaders cutting off speakers midway through their remarks, or prohibiting them to talk at all due to time constraints. Legislators say it’s sometimes necessary to ensure hearings don’t drag into the night, while ensuring other members of the public, as well as lobbyists and advocates, get their say too.
But for Californians who must drive hours from remote parts of the state, it can be frustrating and discouraging to have their viewpoints be rushed through the legislative process. In April, Elizabeth Washoe took a day off work to drive five hours from Modoc County to the state Capitol to speak in support of a bear-hunting bill. She was given only a few seconds to speak.
Washoe: “I would love to have more time to say something. It’s not equitable representation for rural areas.”

Absolute Batman #6: Review & Shameless Plug/Teaser
So this is part-review and part-shameless plug for a fic I've been working on based on this series and the Absolute Universe (so far).
*Mild spoilers for issue 6 and the first arc, "The Zoo" below the cut*
Issue#6 is said to be the conclusion of the first arc, The Zoo, in the new Absolute Batman series and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this storyline and getting to know this world and this Batman. This issue also had me stressing at the end, but I'm glad it turned out the way it did. Though that ending? What the what?!
Not only is this series a new take on the concept of Batman, it felt refreshing having a Bruce that didn't grow up in wealth and luxury, especially with how so many of us are in love with "I do whatever I want" billionaires these days. But yes, he's still broody and there's some hand-waviness to the whole idea of a "street-level" Batman... who also still has most of the things he needs to go full Batman, but this is comics so the heck with logic, right?
First off, this panel made me laugh out loud (even before I added the meme text). It's totally bonkers and I'm not entirely sure if this mini Squidward person is actually a child or not, but up to this point it's implied that all of Roman Sionis' minions are some sort of sadistic mutated human. Also, just to clarify, I don't advocate for the harming of children (mutant or otherwise), but yeah.
It also reminded me of this scene from Anchorman (2004).
🤣Again, totally ridiculous and I'd never advocate for the harming of animals either, but... same energy. Though, Batman had way more reason than Jack Black's random biker character to punt TEMU Aqua-lad into the ocean.
I have to say this storyline overall was very engaging and it did a great job in establishing this universe's Gotham, Bruce, his friends and allies, and his mentality when it comes to fighting crime as a guy who lost his father and built himself up as Batman. Though, it helps being super smart and naturally athletic, and leveraging those things for various other things so he could still have some money and technical know-how in being able to do and make whatever he wanted.
Also, people will probably love one panel in particular with young Bruce, Selina, Eddie, Waylon, Harvey, and Oswald having a sleepover with poor Martha having to wrangler these hooligans. SOMEBODY GO WRITE THAT FIC of their fun little adventures solving crimes, getting into mischief, and just being kids in Gotham.
Anyway, when I first started reading this series, along with Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman, I was inspired to write an Absolute Red Hood fic. And this is where the shameless plug comes in.
I started this new AU Red Hood fic last October (2024), but as this Batman series and arc continued I paused, wanting to see how the storyline would play out so I could weave my version of Red Hood (Catherine Todd) into the background of some of the events of this first story and beyond. After finishing Part 1 and briefly starting on Part 2 I realized I might need to tweak a few things to quasi-fit it into canon, so I shelved the story until this arc was complete. Now that this Batman arc IS complete I feel good about making those tweaks and proceeding with the rest of the story (though it will likely diverge from whatever DC does next with Absolute Batman). It's a dark, hopeful, and bittersweet story that just grabbed me by the throat last year and I hope to share it soon. And while I desperately want to show off the cover art I created, I'll leave a teaser instead.

"Noriaki...?" Jotaro grumbles from where he's fiddling with his smart phone, clumsily tapping Jolyne's contact info, only for the damn thing to give him the same error message that he dismisses with a harsh jab of his finger.
Jolyne's contact photo -- one she took herself, where she's flipping him off from the screen -- feels personal, what with his phone's rejection of even calling her. Jotaro frowns down at it before he sighs, pushing his reading glasses up to rest on his forehead, pressing his fingers against his eyes.
"Yeah, Jojo?" Kakyoin calls back as he pads into the room, his socked feet silent against the floor -- Jotaro can only tell he's moving because of the small hitch of his crutches. "What's- oh," he scowls, staring past Jotaro's shoulder to the phone in his lap.
Jotaro nods his head, scooting over on the couch to make room for Kakyoin to sit down next to him, which he does, his side warm against Jotaro's as he gently takes his phone from him.
Kakyoin taps around himself, opening up settings and then network and wifi settings to review reports that Jotaro doesn't care to decipher before he grumbles and asks Jotaro to plug in their router. Jotaro isn't sure what difference that will make, but Kakyoin understands the difference between wifi and cell service more than he does, so he listens.
"I think we should dump this network provider, Jojo," he calls as Jotaro stands, his knees cracking, and Jotaro huffs. "We'll give them this last chance, but... They better give us a month free after all the issues they've been giving us..."
Jotaro grunts an acknowledgement and heads over to their office door. "Haggling isn't the average American company's strong suit," he calls over his shoulder.
He can hear the smile in Kakyoin's voice as he responds, "I know," and he chuckles at the veiled threat for their cell service, pulls his glasses off his head to hang off his shirt instead, and plugs the router in.
When he comes back to the room, Kakyoin's pulled his own phone out, connecting to their wifi network and calling their provider, while offering Jotaro his own phone back.
Jotaro raises a brow but takes it, while Kakyoin scowls as tinny hold music begins playing from his speakers.
"I hate it here so much," Kakyoin seethes, before slumping into Jotaro's side when he sits down again. "Anyway. I can call them on my phone, you call Jolyne like you were trying to do."
Jotaro blinks. "Will it work now?"
"You can make a call while connected to wifi," Kakyoin says absently, "but you need cell service otherwise. Which is why we need the provider in the first place." His expression darkens. "'Provider...' please. Maybe if they would actually do their jobs..."
Jotaro snorts, but leans against Kakyoin's side anyway, and taps Jolyne's contact information. Finally, his phone displays a calling screen, buzzing slightly as it silently dials, and Jotaro pulls it up to his ear, but not before kissing the top of Kakyoin's head.
When Jotaro pulls away, the small smile Kakyoin has on his face distracts him from his call until Jolyne's voice cuts in, "Old man?" and he tunes back to his daughter.
He can feel Kakyoin's hand worm its way between where they're smushed together while they both talk on their respective calls, lacing their fingers together. Jotaro's chest tenses, and he squeezes. Kakyoin squeezes back.
"Hey Jolyne," Jotaro says and Kakyoin begins his own polite-words-but-sharp-tone conversation. "Just wanted to check in?"

MILES DAVIS IN BLUE
Record labels are doing me no favors by jacking prices up so high that I can no longer afford to buy anything more than a cheap CD (and even those are getting scarce). But some of these special projects they create for high-grade vinyl pressings make great playlists.
I've been buying Miles Davis albums for more than 50 years, and I have just about everything he's released along with several bootlegs. Miles died in '91, and the labels have been repackaging his catalog, and digging through the vaults ever since for every scrap they can find to separate fans like me from what little is left in their wallets. But at this point, they can't find anything for release that I don't already own. All they can do is reconfigure what there is, and wrap it up in a nice, neat package with a big red bow ('tis the season), and slap an exorbitant price tag on it.
Sorry guys. You're not getting my money. I already own whatever you're peddling. But thanks for the playlist ideas! In November of this year, Prestige (or some facsimile thereof) released Miles '54, a set of the Dark Prince's recordings for the label in 1954, remastered, sequenced, and presented on 2 CD's at a reasonable price or 4 LP's (or "vinyls" as the kids call them) at an outrageous $125 bucks. I already had every track - including the alternates. So I simply collected them all digitally, and recreated the entire set as released for an iTunes playlist. Sounds great, and it didn't cost me another dime.
I enjoyed that so much, I took my Take Off: The Complete Blue Note Albums set, and made another playlist of that. I even changed the title of the CD set in the playlist to reflect the three original releases. The songs are listed according to the title of the original 10" LP releases. It makes a great 70 minute playlist.
Last night I saw that Analogue Productions, another of those high-end vinyl pressing outfits decided to collect the four tracks the Miles Davis Sextet (you remember them from Kind of Blue - everybody's favorite Jazz album) recorded in 1958 before cutting their sole masterpiece in 1959. Those four songs, "On Green Dolphin Street", "Fran-Dance", "Stella By Starlight", and "Love For Sale" are now available in a limited edition, numbered, blue vinyl pressing (which I understand sold out before it ever reached the market) that will be followed by a standard, un-numbered black vinyl pressing, for, presumably, a couple of dollars less than the $52 list price they slapped on the four track EP. But those four tracks are readily available in any number of compilations - the simplest being the Miles Davis-John Coltrane Complete Columbia Recordings which has all four. By the way, Kind of Blue is also in that set. So, I liked the idea of putting those tracks in front of Kind of Blue for a Miles Blue playlist. Nine songs, and 78 minutes of Jazz heaven.
What did that playlist cost me? Nothing. Call me cheap. I think I'm smart. I see YouTubers in the Vinyl Community making videos every day where they talk about some "new" vinyl pressing they just bought with songs they already had on 32 other releases, but they had to have this new one because this 195? recording sounds better than it ever has, and you haven't heard it until you've heard this version! Nonsense. Clean it up all you want. But I don't need to hear the blood coursing through the veins of the musicians in order to enjoy the music. And I won't go into bankruptcy for a shiny piece of product with music on it I've owned for decades. Would I like to have something like this Birth of the Blue set? Sure. It's a nice looking set. Probably does sound great. But some of those Vinyl Community people get this stuff free in exchange for a review and a plug on their video. The rest of them aren't trying to put food on the table, and pay rent on the paltry money Social Security offers. I love the music, and I might be old, but I'm not ready to just go sit on my couch and watch reruns of Dark Shadows on Tubi. I want some new music. And I want to hear the old music in new and different contexts. I just don't want to pay for it for the umpteenth time. The principle is the same for me with streaming. Why should I pay to stream an old television show that I watched for free with commercials for 30 or 40 years? You got your money. It's all paid for. Stop knocking on my door with your hand out.
It's been an interesting year. I've had to get creative in order to continue to pursue my favorite hobby. Nobody is giving me more money. I got a small bump in Social Security for '25, and a Medicare increase took most of it already. And prices at the grocery store, and at the pump are NOT going down. Don't kid yourself. Prices NEVER go down. If you want to be entertained, you have to get creative. Because entertainment is always going to run a distant third to food, and housing. But these Miles playlists bring something new to the table, and I'm still getting good value for music I paid a fair price for 30, 40, 50 years ago. Just say "no" to piracy.

Pokemon Horizons Episode 44 Review - Spinel Returns!
Things just got intense now that the Brave Olivine sustained major damage from Rayquaza crashing into it. I think the third arc being a school arc makes sense now as the kids can spend time at school while they wait for the airship to be fully repaired, which could take a long while.
The Explorers’ plan to capture Rayquaza seems well-planned. If they change the resonance, it could disturb the skies and its frequency, which is what Rayquaza rules over. They even planned out how to attack it, by using ice and rock moves, which are what Rayquaza is weak to; though, there’s one thing they’re missing: Rayquaza has a ball of its own. If they try to capture it, will it work or will it get canceled out due to the Ancient Pokeball’s existence? I’m surprised the Explorers haven’t thought about the Ancient Pokeball in their scheme. Then again, only Amethio saw it, so the other Explorers aren’t aware of it, most likely.
Speaking of the Explorers, Spinel being in this episode made me happy because he’s my favorite character in this entire show. It’s crazy how my favorite character is a villain, but he’s just so clever and cunning for an antagonist that I can’t help but to like him a lot. He even planned that Friede would come after him, so he laid out a plan to trap him and wait until the other Explorers capture Rayquaza. Coral was also another standout character as her last-minute decision to have her Glalie Self-Destruct is always a crazy, but worthwhile plan. It’s unfortunate that not much is known about Chalce, but given that she will appear in the next arc disguised either as a student or teacher, maybe she’ll get that screen time.
It’s crazy how competent the kids are becoming. While they weren’t in an actual battle, Liko and Roy used their Pokemon to block the Explorers to protect Rayquaza. Roy uses Fuecoco’s Stomping Tantrum to cause tremors so Chalce wouldn’t throw the ball; when that didn’t work, he used Wattrel to zap the ball away; her Medicham knocks it out with Psybeam afterwards. It was smart for Roy to use all the Pokemon he has in his arsenal to stop them. Liko even uses Sprigatito’s Quick Attack to distract Garganacl. Even Dot joins in as she developed a shut-down program. She jumps out of the boat with her Nidothing outfit and then plugs her Rotom Phone into the resonance device’s outlets. It’s crazy how each of these kids play a huge part in stopping the Explorers. Friede didn’t step in to save the day either! Although not a child, Ludlow even contributed by having his Quagmire speed up the lifeboat by making it use Hydro Pump.
The Friede and Spinel battle was fun to watch, but the writers really do like giving Friede battles with no results. He had done this three times with Amethio before scoring a win on their fourth encounter. Will this be the same with Spinel?
I just hope that the other Rising Volt Tacklers will be okay. I do wonder what Iono’s role in this two-parter will be as she did appear briefly here. What are your thoughts on this episode?
