It is my first soft body puppet, I wanted him to travel well, since he is coming with me to D&D group I host. I based the pattern on the free Snoof pattern on the Puppet Nerd site

LOOK WHAT I MADE! Yes, I made him. Bob the Butterfly. I use a free puppet snoof pattern from Puppet Nerd. Got the idea from Honey Butter Popcorn of Ragmop And Goose! Grew up with the Muppets, Henson family, fraggles. Yep, I'm one of those! Gen Xer. Faux fur, felt, yarn, and ping pong balls.

I actually used the Glorified Puppet Pattern from projectpuppet.com. since it was the easiest for me to do. I honestly didn’t get interested in puppets until a few months ago when I stumbled on some Muppet movies online. Since then, I’ve become a little obsessed with puppet-making.

Puppeteer and puppet maker here, here's some more advice!

Consider joining your country's UNIMA

You can get foam for a reasonable price from pool shops (see if they have offcuts they are great for noses and brains)

Adam Kreutinger (puppetnerd.com) has a great beginner puppet to make called a snoof

Dressing the naked hand is a great beginners resource for all things puppet (including carving, lip sync and body language)

Go see a puppet show and support your local puppeteers and makers

Many shows are online (in webinars) still so keep a look out online for upcoming events, this is a great way to see puppetry around the world.

If you're considering doing puppet building professionally check out Stan Winston studios for their courses (they can be pricey but keep an eye out for discounts)

Similar to how many puppeteers are performing online there are many talks by many fantastic artists you can attend via zoom and the likes. There are lots around World Puppetry Month.

Can you imagine how good life would’ve been of puppets were taken seriously as an art form like Jim Henson wanted? Even Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal weren’t allowed to really be seen as more than just kids movies because nobody can see puppetry as an art form for anyone but children.

I mayyyyy have gotten sort of addicted to puppet making this week, have a finished version of my lizard snoof puppet Carry Bag and also a mini, very heavily inspired by the little mini snoofs ragmop and goose make bc they're iconic

Yet to be named snoof has teeth!!! I already need to repaint them because the paint i used has worn off the tips of the top teeth but. Yeah! I think they add a lot! He’s pretty much done now!

The making of an alien

I wanted to make a multi coloured puppet using the felt. I've been really enjoying basing new puppets off of the basic snoof pattern I downloaded, so that's what I used today.

I knew because I wanted to do a multi-coloured pattern, I decided to put the two sides of the template together to form one whole body. This was to avoid extra unnecessary sewing. After I cut this new template out, I measured in the stripes to be 7cm wide with 1cm either side for sewing room.

I then cut out the fabric and got sewing. It of course took a reasonably long time to sew the pieces together, but the neatness of the stitch came out really well and looks pre-sewed. After sewing the the parts together, I pinned the sides together and got on with completing the body. After that was sewing in the mouth fabric, glueing in the mouth plate, and turning it inside out.

It was then time to add the features and details. I knew I wanted it to have lots of eyes, so I stuck on a load of varied size goggly eyes with double sided tape to give that effect. I also wanted it to have antennae, so i stuck a half green and a blue pipe cleaner into the head and wrapped around the other half at the base for stability.

I'm really happy with the end result. It is a charming alien with a nice smile and over-bite nose, giving it a sweet aura. The different colours work really well, and even though it's based of a similar pattern some of the other puppets, it has a strong personality of its own.

This guy...

Having now made two puppets directly to a pre-made pattern I decided to experiment a bit. To make this new puppet I took the basic pattern of the 'snoof' and derailed it a bit by adding a shape that I hoped would create the illusion of a head and chin. I knew from the start this was going to be a weird looking puppet and boy was I right.

Once I traced out the final pattern onto some brown craft paper, I drew it out onto some pink felt. I chose pink because I thought it might contrast nicely with the strange shape the puppet would take hold. Having now cut it out and pinned it together, it was time to sew. I followed the same sewing pattern I did for the first snoof, sewing the two sides inside out with a running stitch to make the final outcome as clean as possible.

I then sewed in a felt mouth and stuck in the mouth plates that I made out of an old wii game box. Once that was set it was time to turn it inside out.

Once turned inside out I made a foam 'skull' for the puppet so it would hold better shape. To do this I traced out the two sides of the head pattern onto a piece of upholstery foam and glued that together to create a vague cup shape. When this had set I put inside the puppet head. It was at this point I had made a puppet with an uncanny phallic presence that I had not been expecting... but, I had come this far and was not willing to back out, so I lent into it and made a bad guy.

For the details I used big buttons as the eyes, using a pale purple thread to attach them to give an empty look to his stare. I then gave him uneven angry eyebrows, sewing them on with black thread. I had a lot of fun with the placement of all these features, especially the eyebrows, as this puppet had so much scope for just being super weird. Finally, I threaded a spool of grey embroidery thread to create the illusion of greasy grey hair. And to add the icing on the cake, a shitty little chin beard out of black thread.

I have had a lot of fun making this puppet, although he does weird me out looking at him. I have decided he is the pinnacle bad guy of the film, possibly playing the role of an evil scientist or something similar to that. I would like to give him a lab coat and some arms that sit in his pockets, so I will need to find a dolls clothes distributer because I don't have the skill to be making clothes.

All in all, happy with this new addition to the cast.
