Andy Summers: One Train Later: A Memoir (2007)
Andy Summers was already 35 when he joined The Police, 44 when they broke up!
That relative seniority by rock 'n' roll standards provided a lengthy backstory for Summers' autobiography, One Train Later, where he recounts his long and bumpy musical career starting in the late '60s with R&B lovers Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, then psychedelic busts Dantalion's Chariot, Canterbury proggies Soft Machine, and even the last gasp of Eric Burdon's Animals in sunny Hollywood.
By the time Andy serendipitously met Stewart Copeland (after missing his original train, hence the title), he’d settled down as an in-demand, triple-scale session musician, no longer expecting to find rock stardom, so his relative maturity and humility made him a perfect buffer between his two, much younger and more volatile band-members.
More importantly, Andy's six-string virtuosity and versatility gave Sting the ultimate conduit to elevate his burgeoning songwriting genius with uncanny sophistication and structural complexity, because, well, Summers had more guitar chords in his arsenal than "Roxanne" had paying customers.
And after diligently taking the reader along for The Police's incredible run of success, complete with a clear-eyed assessment of their explosive internal dynamics, Andy even has the decency not to bore us (hello, Stewart!) with the semi-retired activities almost nobody cares about.
Featured Records:
The Police: Outlandos d’Amour (1978)
The Police: Synchronicity (1983)

Soft Machine - "'A Lot Of What You Fancy...'" From the album Land Of Cockayne (1981)
Last song scrobbled from iTunes at Last.fm
"The Land of Cockayne is a country where life is a round of luxury and idleness. In Cockayne there are rivers of wine, houses built of cake and streets paved with pastry. Roast pigs wander about with knives and forks in their backs, crying "eat me, eat me," while naked nuns bathe in rivers of sweet milk. In the sky there is a palace of glass, floating above the clouds. To enter this land one has to wade up to the chin in swine's dirt for seven years."
This album--which really doesn't sound like Soft Machine--features Jack Bruce, Allan Holdsworth, and a string section. It very pointedly does not feature Mike Ratledge or Hugh Hopper.
