I’ve been doing more somatic meditation & mindfulness practice recently and I decided to sketch out a quick map of where I notice constrictions, tensions, and blockages. Then I drew a rune for insight and suggestion as to how to work through each of them.
I’m curious to explore how this psychosomatic element of mindfulness will combine with my kriya yoga practice. It’s already yielding some powerful results.

When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release and recover. OMG it is exhausting! As I walk through beautiful, lush green fields and constantly stare at my steps tracker to make absolutely sure that I hit 10K, I realize the amount of fear and anxiety that rushes through my body if I don’t. If I say or do the imperfect thing - this means I will be forever abandoned. It’s not that I ever experienced abandonment in my life. It’s that I experienced a sense of conditional love - love that depended upon doing the perfect thing and always being well behaved. This is not a shame/blame post. Emotional immaturity says that in every situation, there is wrong and right, guilty and innocent. But life is soooo much more complex than that. Your parents did the best THEY knew how to do, and at the same time, they hurt you deeply through this perfectionism. I've been thinking a lot about the senses and how this affects our day to day. Children are often sent to sensory integration centers if they have difficulty taking in and responding to the physical senses. But what about adults? In a technologically driven world, we are constantly being fed information, leading to sensory overload. You know those moments where you need to gtfo (yuuup), are constantly anxious or stressed out? This is our body responding to sensory overload. Sensory integration is the ability to receive, sort, process, and make use of the information from the body and our environment, perceived by our senses. This information then goes to the brain, where it is organized and interpreted. We then form a response to this interpretation. But what happens when our mind/body perceives information as dangerous, or worse yet, a threat to our life? This is where our survival responses come in as fight, flight, freeze or fawn. Our bodies want to fight back, get the hell out, freeze like a deer in headlights, or play nice. These responses are indicators of an incomplete stress cycle, aka trauma. Trauma can be big or small, and because it is incomplete, the cycle continues over and over again, wanting to close the circle. In a world of constant digital information, it can be difficult to process everything at once, our body/mind is not adapted for this barrage of sensory intake. Nature is the most organic form of sensory information. It is calming and naturally in flow with our rythmns. Here's some tips: 1. Get off the phone. Yes, I realize the irony in this statement. 2. Go outside (without your phone). 3. Take in the senses around you, one by one. Sight, sound, touch, smell & taste. Notice what you experience. 4. Do a little dance with the rythmn of nature. 💃🌿 Fun! So much change. Hard to believe in just a couple of weeks how everything is SO different. Went from sipping tea in the mountains in India with @livealiveadventures to whisking home and a two week self-quarantine. That ends today—-but not really as I will continue to observe distancing and keeping social circle extremely small. What has been a constant through it all is practice. Meditation, mantra, movement. Not to say I haven’t felt the waves—-of grief, of anxiety, of stir-crazy. But leaning into practice has helped me ride the waves rather than being crushed by them. AND it has been a “boon” (greatly beneficial) to take the seat of the teacher in the virtual format. Seeing familiar faces and new ones, taking familiar shapes and new ones, loving my existing communities and connecting with new ones, has truly been a saving grace. While life feels constricted on the one hand, it is also expanding in new ways. As my teacher @manorama9 said today “when there is loss, there is also gain.”(check out her live story for the full conversation). I am daily reminded of this as I stay close to the teachings of yoga and of my own heart. May we have peace in our minds, health in our bodies and love in our hearts.
