i remember staying up really late with my friends during a sleepover, trying to stay quiet as to not wake our parents, as we pulled out our DS’s to try and beat eachother at mario kart.
my friend always brought a cartridge for me bc i didn’t own a mario kart game but we had a blast together.
it was the silent way in saying “i love you, friend” that we could never say out loud.
my friends would also play a lot of splatoon when it first came out. i didn’t have a wii u but i was just content to watch. They didn’t believe me but i was genuinely enraptured by them playing and bantering together and me sitting there in the middle just happy to watch.
theres a lot of memories i have from the ds servers.
i love you video games. you help me show how much i love my friends one blue shell at a time 💝

Just finished my last match of Splatoon 1 I'll get to play before server shutdown. Farewell, old friend.

Splatoon 1 servers are getting shutdown and this silly little game really changed my life in such a dramatic way. I've made so many friends through it and have spent countless nights and mornings just hanging out in calls with them. These nights were so formative for me, especially being post undergrad back then with not a ton of hope at landing a job. Things are much more different now and even though I don't play or keep up with them anymore, I cherish those memories deeply. I even met my current partner through it! We've been together for 6 years and now have our own place. Anyways, Splatoon rules and online friends are valid.
#Im sure down the road someone will host servers and this game will live on in that way#I hope all the young kids playing splat2 and splat3 also form great memories playing with friends#splatoon#splatoon1#splatoon2#splatoon3#illustration#fanart#inkling

I also wanted to talk a bit about the new Splatoon update, though I will mainly be focusing on the newly revealed weapons, as they're a particularly special interest of mine!
This update is SO clearly the 10th anniversary one! It's version 10.0, for crying out loud, and they made sure to make it feel like an anniversary update with their promo material!

They brought back the primary Splatoon 3 promotional kids: VeronIKA and Hirooooo! Well, kinda. Their eye colors aren't the same, but that's nothing new for promo kids. It's still cleay them, so it doesn't matter!
They also brought back a stage that they seemingly wouldn't have otherwise! It makes sense why they would, though! It's the very first stage they showcased! Some of the first Splatoon gameplay was shown on Urchin Underpass! It was also the only decent stage that was left to rot in Splatoon 1 after the server shutdown. They simply couldn't let it be left forgotten as a multiplayer stage! They even recreated some of the shots from Splatoon's reveal trailer, the very first one! This one, in particular, is very notable to me! (Left is Splat 1, right is Splat 3)

It also looks like in the Splatoon 3 on Switch 2 section, they tried to pay homage to the Splatoon 3 reveal trailer! The most obvious instance being this shot of the match start screen. The weapon classes used aren't the same, but the callback feels quite clear!

Now, let's finally talk about the new weapon collections!
Now, we don't know the quality of the kits yet, but what I do know is that the quality of the designs is high! I knew that if Splatoon 3 ever came out with third kits, their designs would be extraordinary, and I was right!
In the early days of Splatoon 3 I had a theory that Emberz could be the Splatlands' Kensa brand, and would be responsible for the game's third kit collection, with a potential chaotic and colorful aesthetic and all! I'm quite pleased to see my observation come true!
I must note that out of the 30 weapons we will be receiving, over half of them(17) will be getting a third kit for the first time, and excluding the weapons new to Splatoon 3, a third of them(10) are returning weapons receiving the third kit treatment for the first time ever, which is awesome! Those 10 are: Jet Squelcher, Carbon Roller, Rapid Blaster Pro, Splash-o-Matic, Tri-Slosher, L-3 Nozzlenose, .96 Gal, Blaster, Dualie Squelchers and Hydra Splatling.

I want to break down these collections' aesthetics a bit, starting with Barazushi! This one has a very outdoorsy and almost military aesthetic to it's weapon designs, with the camo patterns, additional kelp camouflage, what looks to be army rations, headlights fit for an all-terrain vehicle, carabiners and other such safety straps. To me the standouts of this collection are: the beautiful oxidized copper Painbrush, H-3 Nozzlenose, which looks nice in green, the Tenta Brella with its crabiners, the Crabon Roller, which was appropriately fitted with a headlight and the Splat Charger, which seems to be paying homage to the Kelp Splat Charger of Splatoon 1!

As the official post stated, Emberz is a brand that originated in the streets of Splatsville. As such, its weapon collection matches that chaotic and colorful youth street culture with its bright neon colors, tons of stickers, asymmetry, and retro gadgets like the tamagotchi. The highlights of this collection for me are: leopard print .96 Gal and tiger striped Dread Wringer with all those added spikes, Splatana Stamper with that awesome color scheme and all those stickers, the Blaster with those very pretty flames, the Dualie Squelchers with their asymmetry and zebra print design, the Hydra Splatling with that sick black and red color scheme as well as all weapons that have these tamagotchi-like devices attached to them!

So i heard about Plaza posts in Splatoon 2 shutting down because of the twitter connection requirement and uh... yeah man it sucks. It's really sad to see that Splatoon 2 from now on is gonna feel a lot more quiet and desolate. The game aint even reached a decade old and yet a really awesome part of it... is dead.
I hate how Nintendo is so quick to shut down online stuff for their games, they could have easily found a way to get through the Twitter requirement for posts in Splatoon 2 and patch it in, but they genuinely dont give a shit about that game anymore because it's not the most recent thing anymore.
I am calling it right now, online services for the Switch including Splatoon 2 and 3 are closer to dying than people think, unless Nintendo starts giving a shit about their community then you can expect to see Splatoon 2 to die off within the next 3 to 4 years. Enjoy the games you have now before Nintendo kills them off and we're left with fan servers... ugh...
Anyways i wanna say, thank you Splatoon 2. While your story mode wasn't exactly the best and i wish it was done better, and yes you did have a lack of content at launch... It sucks to see an important feature of yours get shutdown as i got my start with this series that i love so much in this game. I am going to cheerish the countless Splatfests i joined and the excitement i felt when playing Octo Expansion... So long buddy... See you later...

As we bid adieu to the original squid game (and other games due to the Wii U & 3DS server shutdowns), I thought I'd share a simple Splatoon-themed poster I made way back in February 2015
Thanks for the fun times, Splat 1; we shall booyah on in your maritime memory 🦑

your 3DS is OFFLINE . . .
(mucho texto below)
On April 8th, 2024, the online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U were shutdown. This affects online play across all games, and SpotPass, used in apps like Swapdoodle; this renders online-required games unplayable, most notably Nintendo Badge Arcade.
As of the date I'm writing this not aaall online features are unaccessible, Friends List seem to be working, Pokémon Bank is still running, usable for free and compatible with Pokémon Home, and you can download updates and games from the eShop (only if you bought them before the eShop shutdown from March 27th, 2023...), but there's no guarantee those will last much longer.
anyways Pretendo Network is a replacement for Nintendo Network that not only aims to restore online play, but also other abandoned features such as Miiverse and the Wara Wara Plaza.
Setting up Pretendo is pretty easy, there's a guide on its website for both Wii U, 3DS and their respective emulators, and you don't even need modding on Wii U for it to work (with some limitations), but you might as well do it since it's so easy (Wii U modding guide - 3DS modding guide)
Currently Pretendo is in a beta state and active development so it's not really a fully realized replacement yet, but a couple of popular games are supported well enough at the moment, like Mario Kart 7, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker (personally i care more about pokemon gen 6 and mh4u and idk if those will be supported aaaa oh well).
Since this is technically a whole different server, some things don't carry over from you Nintendo Network ID to your Pretendo Network ID, like your badges(you should backup your badges before using Pretendo on 3DS) or your Friends List... so I gotta fill it up again! my new 3DS Friend Code is 3878-6726-5312 and my PNID is dibudani (for Wii U), add me right now !!
"Why is the little wifi guy so happy?" idk. why was toad happy when Club Nintendo was discontinued?

i saw a theory that since splatoon is p2p and the servers are only for matchmaking, any already existing lobbies might be able to just
continue on even after the servers are down
would explain why some people are still getting matches 16 minutes after shutdown
