22nd October
The Creation

Source: Freepik
According to Jewish folklore, today, in 4004 BC, Jehovah created the Earth. He allegedly brought the planet into existence by issuing instructions for the various aspects of the world that enabled life, to come into being over six days. This is the tradition inherited by Christians and recorded in the Old Testament. Some Jews also held that there is a perfect Godhead, beyond the comprehension of mankind and the Earth is simply the product of aspects of this higher plane finding their way down to our level of existence. A more pessimistic Judaic tradition claims that God’s first attempt at creation was unsatisfactory and the Earth was later made from the rubble of his first attempt.
Meanwhile in East Manchester, the pre-Bonfire Night tradition of Cob-coaling used to take place in the last week of October. Children would go from door to door in Stalybridge and Dukinfield asking for coal and wood from their neighbours for the bonfires they were busily preparing.

“How could I look my grandchildren in the eye and say I knew what was happening to the world and did nothing.” - David Attenborough
I find it very odd that so many ordinary people in Britain put their political faith in Reform UK, a political party owned and run by billionaires and millionaires. Not only is it highly unlikely that these people have any real understanding of what the struggle of day-to-day life is like for the majority of British citizens, but many of them are stupidly short-sighted.
From across the world we are hearing reports of more and more extreme weather events – hurricanes, tsunamis, drought, wild fires - accompanied by resulting loss of life.
Here in Britain the Financial Times carried this headline:
“England drenched after the wettest 18 months since records began in 1886.” (15/03/24)
The effects of climate change have continues into 2025 with the Manchester area suffering catastrophic flooding in the last few days.
“Hundreds of people have been forced to leave their homes after heavy rain and floods battered large parts of north-west England, leaving cars abandoned and cancelling trains. Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident after torrential downpours across Stockport, Bolton, Didsbury, Harpurhey, Stalybridge and Wigan" (BBC:01/01/250
How have the super–rich that run Reform UK responded to climate change? Not well!
Just a couple of weeks ago:
“Nigel Farage was the “special guest of honour” and keynote speaker at the launch of the UK branch of US-based climate denial think tank, the Heartland Institute, on Tuesday.” (leftfootforward: 20/12/24)
During the general election Farage and Reform UK called for a referendum to abolish Britain’s target of net zero greenhouse emissions. Former Conservative Party donor, Richard Tice, Deputy Leader Of Reform UK, together with Nigel Farage have:
“… been promoting misinformation about climate change… the denial of scientific truths undermines public trust, and ultimately democracy…." (London School of Economics: 17/06/24)
Ex-Tory Lee Anderson, is reported to have said ‘only the odd weirdo’ cares about reducing carbon emissions in the UK, claiming that fossil fuels are a “gift of God" and should continue to be used.
Nick Candy, billionaire property developer, has recently defected from the Conservative Party to become Reform UK Treasurer, so presumably shares their climate change denial policies and agrees with his right-wing activist wife when she stated:
“‘I just think the climate crisis, or lack of, is not a crisis. I mean the air is better than when I was growing up." (Metro: 07//24)
So while Britain is subject to increasingly extreme weather conditions, while more and more of British people are finding their homes and businesses underwater, Reform UK is in denial.
Why is this? One theory is that Reform UK, by blaming green policies for pushing up costs for consumers and businesses, can gain votes from the backlash against costly climate action. It is certainly true that green policies are costly, an expense we will all have to bear. Unfortunately, as the experience of the Manchester district has demonstrated this week, the cost of doing nothing can be even greater.
Maybe the billionaires and millionaires that own Reform UK should take note of this quote:
“If you really think that the environment is less important than the economy, try holding your breath while you count your money.”– Guy McPherson

STALEY BRIDGE STALYBRIDGE
STALEY BRIDGE STALYBRIDGE
this is Staley bridge
my father's birthplace
here is a picture
of me in a pram
my sister
in a pram
on a big bridge
crossing the Tame river
this is not
that Staley bridge where
the Saxons crushed the
Vikings
rushing back to
meet my
Norman ancestors at Hastings
and we
know what happened there
****
Yes, here we are
up front Mossley
in that picture, my
Mother
daughter of a war hero
pushing our pram
and there, no doubt,
the great cotton mills
still
doing their job though
not now in
their hey day
postmodernity,
postcoloniality
what landscape altering modes
of production ushered
in in
their wake
and here is Engels incliding
text on this place in his seminal
work on
the working class
in England
and here I am
years later, studying satire living
in his monument house
in Oxford Street Manchester
water
under this bridge, water
connecting
us all
Tipperary, Stalybridge,
Mahikeng South Africa
figures
in a Lowry paintimg
they come
and they go
water
under this bridge then
so much water we
tend to
forget about
water headed
to the port of slavery
same water in the skiffle
psychedelia of those
Sergeant Pepper people
magicians of the airwaves
conjurors of
a whole new
line
in identity
fruit of the clash of
working class proclivities
with
transcendental
mind
clash, I say,
but what a melding, beloved
blending
without which
no way this space, or place,
or room
to talk
gone these guys
or finally fading
gone
those mills of my childhood
Spitfire stories
of how
we stood alone
everything reconfigured,
outright repurposed
voices (and their words)
I fail to recognise, alien
strange
elevated above whilst
so out of frame
somehow talking all
necessities of suppression
commandeering everything
stretching
the distance below

all that this is metonym of
all this place
this life

Starlink Installation Stalybridge.
Fixed Price Starlink Installation £200.00 complete includes all brackets..
Here we have a new Starlink installation carried out by Andy and Ethan in Stalybridge, Tameside for a recently renovated old farm house that now needed the internet updating.
The customer in this case had been using BT line but had now been offered the opportunity of working from home but the down side a good connection to the internet was needed for Zoom etc, the mobile network option was also a no go due to the remote location.
They had initially contacted us for a bit of advice about the reliability of Starlink and off the back of the phone call took the plunge and ordered the equipment.
The equip to arrived within a week and we arranged a date to do the install customer had sent over a few pictures of the property so we already new where it was going and again we offered a fixed fee including all the brackets. The Starkink was fitted on a alloy mast and galvanised bracket with cable fed down to the lounge with a wall socket brush plate to finish off, speeds of 190mbs coming in straight away so a very happy customer.
For more info or to book an install in Stalybridge or surrounding area feel free to get in touch.

Family and friends unite to give blood in memory of Manchester teenager
More than 70 family members and friends of a 14-year-old girl from Greater Manchester who sadly died from acute liver failure gave blood in her memory at an emotional donation session held at the school she attended. Maisie Almond from Stalybridge fell ill suddenly in September 2024 and was listed for a liver transplant. A donor match was found for Maisie but tragically she became too weak to…
