Sydney Harbour Bridge Construction

The Sydney Harbour Bridge – affectionately known as The Coathanger by Australians – was opened to great fanfare and a touch of scandal on 19 March 1932 and was the longest steel arch bridge in the world at the time, with a span of 503 metres (1,650 ft) and standing at 134 metres (440 ft) above Sydney harbour.

Before the bridge was constructed, there were two Sydneys – the north side, with a population of around 300,000, and the south side and central business district, with 600,000 people. A regular and reliable ferry service took passengers across the harbour, carrying 13 million annually by 1908. There was also a land route from the south to the north shore, which was a time-consuming journey known as the 'five bridges' – horses and cars crossed a series of bridges over the Parramatta River, a detour that added 20-30 kilometres (12-19 mi) to the trip.

As Sydney's population grew and up to 75 ferries crisscrossed the harbour, often in dangerous and foggy conditions, the need for a bridge to connect the northern and southern shores gained momentum. One extraordinary man, Dr John Job Crew Bradfield (1867-1943), envisioned a structure that would unite Sydney – a minimalist, sweeping steel structure embodying modernist design aesthetics, breaking free from the city's convict-era agrarian roots.

Early Designs

Charles Darwin's grandfather, Dr Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), was inspired by reports of the NSW colony and mentioned the vision of a 'proud arch' in his poem Visit of Hope to Sydney Cove, near Botany Bay, published in 1789. However, the first person to seriously propose a harbour bridge was the emancipated convict and New South Wales (NSW) government architect Francis Greenway (1777-1837). In an 1815 report to Governor Macquarie (1762-1824), Greenway raised the idea and also wrote to the editor of The Australian newspaper, which published Greenway's letter on 28 April 1825:

Thus in the event of the Bridge being thrown across from Dawes Battery to the North Shore, a town would be built on that shore, and would have formed with these buildings a grand whole, that would have indeed surprised anyone entering the harbour; and would have given an idea of strength and magnificence that would have reflected credit and glory on the colony and the Mother Country.

Greenway's vision was never adopted. The engineering skills and steel technology to span the harbour were not yet available, and the NSW colony was focused on agricultural production and settlement.

The next proposal was put forward in 1857 when English-trained engineer Peter Henderson designed a bridge from Dawes Battery (now Dawes Point on the south side) to Milsons Point. Henderson had worked with Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859), the renowned and groundbreaking 19th-century engineer who designed London's Paddington Station, the Great Western Railway linking London with the west of England and South Wales, and various steamships.

Henderson's sketch for a cast iron bridge supported by two pylons on either side of the harbour is the oldest existing practical plan. The population and economic activity on the northside in 1857 were not significant enough to convince the colonial government. It is also likely that engineering knowledge at the time would have resulted in a bridge that may have fallen into the harbour. Cast or wrought iron, which is not as strong as steel, might not have been capable of withstanding the stresses of a large span in a harbour with strong tides and a city frequently buffeted by high winds.

By the turn of the century, north shore residents had formed the Sydney and North Shore Junction League, championing a bridge inspired by the vision of Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896), a local politician and five-time premier of NSW. Parkes had called for a bridge to improve transportation and promote urban development. This resulted in Minister for Works E. W. O'Sullivan (1846-1910), announcing a design competition in January 1900. Submissions were received from local and international engineers.

This 4-arch span at Milepost 42.81 (measuredcfrom Springfield) on the former Boston and Maine Railroad Conn River mainline was designed and built in 1846 by none other than Theodore Judah who later became Chief Engineer of the Sacramento Valley Railroad and the greatest proponent of the Transcontinental Railroad. He personally lobbied Abraham Lincoln for the passage of the Pacific Railroad Act and brought together the 'Big Four' to found the Central Pacific Railroad. As Chief Engineer of the CPRR he surveyed the route along which it would be ultimately built, but he died in 1863 not living to see his dream become a reality more than 150 years ago in 1869. As for the railroad itself, it was once a major north south heavy duty mainline until it fell out of favor as a thru route by B&M successor Guilford Transportation, and for most of my lifetime was little more than a 10 mph secondary the domain of short locals headed to the few remaining customers north to White River Junction. From 1972 to 1987 Amtrak's Montrealer traversed this route until discontinued due to poor track conditions and shifted to an all Central Vermont routing from New London leaving this stretch of the Conn River main devoid of passenger trains until 2014. On August 20 of that year, the state finalized a $17 million deal to purchase the line from Pan Am, successor to the B&M and Guilford. The subsequent rebuilding of the route (including this bridge) to modern passenger train standards with a combination of federal and state money led to the return of Amtrak's Vermonter to the line, dubbed by the state as the 'Knowledge Corridor' in December 2014 with new stops added at Holyoke, Northampton, and Greenfield. Wanting to capitalize on their investment, in February 2016, Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack said that MassDOT was looking at starting a pilot commuter service as early as 2017. In June 2018, Governor Charlie Baker announced that two Amtrak New Haven to Springfield shuttle round trips would be extended to Greenfield in 2019 as a pilot program. The service began August 31, 2019 operated under the Valley Flyer moniker. It was operated on a trial basis through fall 2021 with a goal of 24,000 riders a year which has been met, and consequently the state just announced that the trains will be permanent. Alas, they travel no further than Greenfield, so for now this train and its northbound counterpart are the only daily passenger trains that cross this magnificent historic structure. THE LATE MARQUIS OF LONDONDERRY NORTH CRAY, Sunday Night [18 August 1822] We attended the little village church this morning … The pew of the Londonderry family stands conspicuously by the reading desk, and it was a practice with his Lordship to stand so that he could read the Liturgy from the Clerk’s book. The poor fellow felt honoured by this participation; and, after the service was over this morning, we saw him in the midst of a groupe, describing the circumstance, with tears in his eyesꟷpointing out the exact spot on which his Lordship stoodꟷand showing minutely how he used to hold the leaves of his book to accommodate him. The poor man’s earnestness, and the eager attention of his hearers, would have been a fine subject for Yorick.

Why would Castlereagh want to follow the service from a book at some distance from where he was standing? Perhaps he was long-sighted but always left his reading glasses at home.

Note: The interiors of many churches in the 18th and early 19th centuries included designated pews for families, and a two- or three-layer structure with the pulpit from which the minister delivered his sermon at the top, then a reading desk for the minister and the parish clerk’s desk at the bottom. Once you start to travel a lot, you start to notice similarities between places.

Not only this little restaurant reminded us of home (one of our home for 6 years) but while I was walking downtown I notified this building. It reminded me a bit of Pompidou center in Paris with its inside-out design but it mostly reminded me of a building in Singapore where we took a family photo back in 2018

The Lloyd's building (sometimes known as the Inside-Out Building) is the home of the insurance institution Lloyd's of London. The building is a leading example of radical Bowellism architecture in which the services for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are located on the exterior to maximise space in the interior. In 2011, twenty-five years after its completion in 1986 the building received Grade I listing; at this time it was the youngest structure ever to obtain this status. It is said by Historic England to be "universally recognised as one of the key buildings of the modern epoch". Its innovation of having key service pipes and other components routed outside the walls has led to very expensive maintenance costs due to their exposure to the elements.
