smut for bbg mu qing
cw: dom reader, gender neutral, sub mu qing, brat mu qing, impact play, verbal degradation, light breath control,religious/spiritual setting, setting: a collapsed shrine in the forest. the storm outside makes the roof rattle. mu qing is half-undressed, chest rising and falling fast. you’re standing over him, calm. he’s not going anywhere.
“keep pretending you’re untouchable,” you whispered, your voice just a breath against his lips. “i dare you.”
then you slammed him back against the stone.
mu qing gasped, robes tangled and loose, wrists caught in your grip above his head. his lip was bleeding—your doing—but he wasn’t complaining. not yet.
“i said…” your voice dropped into a growl, “do you think you’re too holy to be fucked like a common whore?”
he hissed through his teeth, trying to jerk his wrists free. “i’m not— you won’t—” but the tremble in his thighs gave him away.
you grinned slowly.
“you want this,” you said, letting go of one hand just to unbuckle your belt. he didn’t move. he couldn’t. not with the way his knees had given out.
you slipped the belt through the loops—slowly, on purpose—and watched his throat bob as he swallowed.
then you reached down, shoved his robes up to his hips, and dragged the leather across his inner thigh.
he shivered.
“you talk too much,” you said. and brought the belt down.
crack.
he bit back a cry, jaw clenched, but his back arched off the stone and his cock twitched where it lay flushed and leaking against his stomach.
“i should gag you,” you mused, trailing your hand up his trembling chest. “but hearing you whimper’s just too good.”
he turned his face away, cheeks bright red. “i’m not— you think i’m going to beg for you?”
you leaned close, teeth against the shell of his ear. “no. i think you’re going to break.”
your hand closed around his throat—just tight enough to remind him who he belonged to.
“and when you do,” you whispered, dragging the belt across his ass, “you’ll thank me for ruining you.”
mu qing let out a strangled noise—half fury, half desperate need—and when you pressed your knee between his legs, he ground down on it like he hated himself for it.
perfect.
absolutely fucking perfect.
your knee stayed firmly between his legs. he kept grinding down against it, desperate and needy—but trying to play it off like he wasn’t doing it on purpose.
“what’s wrong, mu qing?” you murmured, fingers sliding slowly down his throat, across his chest. “is the altar not the only thing you’re making a mess of tonight?”
“i’m not—” he started, but you clamped your palm over his mouth and pressed.
“shhh,” you whispered. “i’m talking.”
his eyes went wide. and there it was—that glimmer. not fear. excitement. that dangerous, aching thrill of surrender. of being broken and rebuilt in your hands.
you slid your hand between his legs.
touched him—just once, slow and deliberate.
he was soaked.
“pathetic,♡” you said with a smile. “look at you. dripping like you belong to me.”
“i don’t—!” he choked, more reflex than defiance.
crack.
the belt came down again. hard. right over the same spot.
his back arched. his voice broke.
“say it,” you demanded, gripping his cheek and forcing his eyes to meet yours. “say who you belong to.”
mu qing grit his teeth, eyes glassy, thighs shaking beneath you.
“say it.”
“no—”
crack.
another blow. and another. you didn’t stop until his breath hitched, his hips started moving on their own, and his voice finally—finally—shattered.
“…yours.”
“what was that?”
“…i’m yours.”
“how?”
“i’m yours~,” he repeated, hoarse, humiliated, burning.
you stroked him again. this time, he didn’t flinch away. this time, he moaned for it.
“good boy,” you whispered. “now… open your mouth. we’re not done.”
𓍯𓂃𓈒𓏸⭑˖ ࣪
author's note: omg, anon i've wanted to do this for a long time <3333 i really love that idiot mu qing.

A Masterpost for the Revised Version of TGCF
Due to the amount and frequency of misinformation about the revised version of TGCF, I wanted to make a post to serve as a resource for those who are confused about it, while also helping to debunk some of the sensationalist rumors floating around.
This post will be edited to include new things as needed.
⚠️Spoiler Warning: if you have not finished reading the original novel, or want to experience the new scenes from the revised naturally/fresh, please proceed with caution! I've intentionally kept things as vague as possible, but some spoilers are unavoidable!⚠️
✨ PART ONE: Frequently Asked Questions ✨
🔹What is the "revised" version of TGCF?
MXTX had been working on a revised version of TGCF since completing the original, as mentioned this in her postscript/afterword, and in an online interview (Q.27) done years ago just as she competed TGCF. That's all that was known for several years.
In early 2023, TGCF was finally released in print format in mainland China — and this was revealed to be the revised version! Due to regulations, this was a censored edition. However, in early 2024, the uncensored edition was uploaded to JJWXC (the site where all of MXTX's webnovels were originally published)! It's currently fully available to read in Simplified Chinese.
If you want a more in-depth explanation about the revised, please see my post about that here.
🔹What does the revised change compared to the original?
Several scenes have been added, some removed, others expanded upon. Overall, MXTX reportedly wrote 100k characters (words) of new content. While the overarching plot of each arc and the novel as a whole remains the same, it's a more cohesive and polished story. Pacing in each part of the story has been adjusted to flow better, especially in arcs notorious for feeling slow or disjointed.
Some segments have had fairly significant changes — namely the Bloody Banquet/Fang Xin Guoshi arc. (Though it still plays out much the same way.) Most others have smaller changes.
A new extra was also added, called "the Ghost King Dressed Down," which has been translated by Scarabsi on twitter.
🔹How does the revised version effect characters?
Apart from certain minor characters — such as the child Lang Ying who was removed entirely — there haven't been many drastic changes. The biggest thing was side characters like Lang Qianqiu and Ling Wen being given notably more backstory to further flesh them out. Their characterization itself hasn't changed, however.
🔹Which version is canon, then?
Whichever you want, and you can mix-and-match! MXTX has given fans her blessings and encouragement!
🔹How do I read the revised version in English?
Currently, there are no official or unofficial English translations of the whole revised version. Nor are there any plans to do so for the near future.
However, there are English fan translations of a few notable chapters, which you can read here. There's also instructions on that site on how to read the rest of the updated webnovel in English, using a browser extension.
Additionally, the audio drama is adapting the uncensored revised version, and has been doing an amazing job! Check out how to listen to that with English subs here.
✨PART TWO: Debunking Rumors & Clearing up Misinformation✨
Note that all chapter numbers given will be referencing the webnovel's. The old chapters are also available towards the bottom of the page as "serialized versions."
(Translated screenshots provided are janky because it's just basic google MTL!)
🔸"Mentions of Mu Qing's mother was removed from the revised!"
Not at all! Both his parents are still mentioned, along with how Mu Qing is the primary breadwinner due to his mom's failing eyesight. (Ch. 57)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🔸"The earring scene isn't there anymore!"
The earring scene is still very much there! Not actually sure why this is a rumor at all, when the whole earring thing spans several chapters. Here's the conclusion of it (Ch. 59):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🔸"Characters have been butchered in general, with Mu Qing especially getting scenes cut!"
No character (who didn't straight-up get deleted) has been butchered. Nor has any character been singled out for having their scenes deleted/changed, because that's happened to every character — yes, including Xie Lian and Hua Cheng! — and they also have new scenes added!
E.g. the scene where Mu Qing picks the cherries is removed, because that whole section was changed. (However, it's still mentioned that others are prejudiced against him due to his background, and so on.) Meanwhile, there's a brand-new scene that shows Mu Qing's aptitude in treating wounds, as well as he and Feng Xin having new hijinks as "junior officials" with Xie Lian, and more.
Despite the rumors, characters haven't been flattened to make them more one-dimensional compared to Hualian. Perhaps the idea of certain scenes being cut sounds scary for characterization, but a lot of the original has been retained one way or another. In many cases, MXTX just condensed things, or moved them around. The revised is meant to be looked at as a whole, after all.
🔸"Mu Qing now leaves for no reason in Book/Arc 4, instead of for his mother!"
Mu Qing clearly states in the revised that he wants to leave in order to find a way to improve their situation, since they anyways cannot agree amongst themselves. Just like in the original, he was frustrated and felt there was no point in continuing along the same path. (Ch 152)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yes, he does not bring up his mother in the revised scene. For context: there is a three year gap between the end of Book/Arc 2 and the start of 4. Which means in the original, Mu Qing didn't mention his mother for those three years. Given the events leading to his departure, and what follows, this causes several inconsistencies.
That is a whole topic unto itself, however. But it's not surprising the revised did it a bit differently.
🔸"Feng Xin isn't as funny anymore!"
Feng Xin is actually one of the least changed characters! This rumor likely stems from the scene where Xie Lian reveals his password, to Feng Xin, who no longer rolls on the floor while laughing. Or maybe it's a miscommunication based on the printed revised, which censored some of his (and Qi Rong's) cursing. But that was only for the printed!
🔸"Ling Wen's character isn't as interesting because of the changes!"
People will really say anything on the internet. She's been given more depth and complexity, if anything. There's new scenes that expand on her background and early days in heaven, and her relationship with Bai Jing has been given a lot of extra attention. Her motivations and actions remain the same, but if the subtext was missed in the original, it could have led to some readers thinking of Ling Wen as certain way. Like a ruthless girlboss.
The revised reiterating that this isn't the case doesn't change or detract from her, as that was one of the points of her story to begin with. Plus, the revised arc gives Bai Jing much-needed characterization.
🔸"Ling Wen's ascension is now due to Jing Wen/not on her own merit/etc!"
Frankly, this rumor might be due to people not properly understanding how ascension works in TGCF, and thinking the revised is adding something that they forgot was already in the original. The revised didn't change anything about the manner in which Ling Wen ascended.
You can actually check out the revised Brocade Immortal arc here for yourself, as it's been fan translated!
🔸"The dynamic between Hualian is different in the revised!"
Their dynamic is exactly the same as before, only reinforced if anything. If the new additions are enough to destroy someone’s image of Hualian or turn it on its head, that’s definitely not a fault with either novel version!
🔸"The scene where Hua Cheng is disguised as Lang Ying and accidentally catches Xie Lian bathing is removed!"
Unfortunately, yes, the bathing scene is gone. However, Hua Cheng in disguise is still there — he's a village kid instead.
🔸"MXTX made changes to side characters/ships because she felt threatened by their popularity compared to her main couple!"
This one just doesn't really make sense, because several side characters were given *more* content — including their relationships.
Lang Qianqiu finally feels like an actual character. Quan Yizhen and Yin Yu have new stuff about them. Shi Wudu has some clever little cameos. Pei Ming’s feelings about Yushi Huang are brought up. Pei Xiu’s backstory is even more heartbreaking. Qi Rong has new scenes that make him feel genuinely menacing. Xiao Ying’s been completely revamped. These are just to name a few, and excluding things already talked about above.
It seems unlikely that MXTX would go through the trouble of adding to her side characters if she didn’t care about them, felt they weren’t important, or thought they were getting undeserved attention. Besides, popular characters like Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan had no cuts to their arc!
Looking at the actual metrics… MXTX has no need to feel threatened by her side ships vs her main ships.

Watching Heaven Official's Blessing (through ENTIRELY legitimate sources) and the platform suddenly stopped having subs halfway through episode... 5 or so? So I watched a little longer without subs, relying on my general knowledge of the overall canon to fill in the blanks, and watched through the bit where Xie Lian gets put under house arrest in the Heavenly Capital and Mu Qing comes to see him
and I must stress, watching it without subs, this was a very sweet scene! Aw! His old friend came to see him, even despite the accusations and the arrest! He was worried about him and wanted to check in! He brought medicine for the injury that Xie Lian has been neglecting, which literally nobody else bothered to do! How heartwarming!
Anyway then I found another Legitimate Source which did have the subtitles, and watched that scene again with subs, and Holy Fucking Shit Mu Qing

I neeeeed grown ass adults to rp TGCF/MDZS stuff 1x1 with.
LF anything involving:
- Jiang Cheng, Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji;
- Pei Ming, Mu Qing, Feng Xin;
as monogamous ships or as throuples.
Plus, Pei Ming and Jiang Cheng with anybody listed, including each other and their own selves.
Also interested in genderbending as follows:
JC and/or WWX in XianCheng, PM with any male character. (In fact, I do prefer PeiXin like this). Pei Ming x Pei Ming— The rest, I could be talked into.
I'd play any of the listed characters, male, female, top, bottom, sub, dom, I'll do it all. Smut required (so be 18+, I'm 27 myself) and I'm very open as far as dead dove stuff goes.
Focused on the relationship between our characters, not much of an interest in stuff like action/adventure.
3rd person, 3~5 paragraphs.
Interact, dm me or (preferably bc I don't check tumblr often) directly add @ jehannya on discord if you're interested in any of this.

TGCF donghua Season 2, Episode 7 thoughts
More screaming about TGCF. As usual, very good ep. Spoilers for the show and the book below.
T-T Hua Cheng is so mean to E-Ming/himself.
Mu Qing is so happy he made his dice T-T And Feng Xin stole them!!!!
The crocodile monsters are really neat looking. I'm wondering why the creative team didn't just stick with designing monsters instead of what they did in that one episode.
Splash war alkdjaldkjalj This episode is for the FengQing lovers, truly. They're the best/worst. Love them.
Meanwhile Hualian:
Hua Cheng to Xie Lian: Whenever you need me, baby, call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me
Xie Lian being the typical "dude you didn't specify it had to be swords and being weird about it is stupid" is my jam. I love him.
Xie Lian to Lang Qianqiu: "I have always been like this." -gazes into the distance sadly- "You just didn't know."
This makes me T-T T-T T-T I just love like the central message about how much of our perceptions of people we know informs what we "know" about them. And how it's very easy to let other people draw their own conclusions, and how dangerous that can be. And how people will blame the gap between their perceived reality and reality on the subject of their perceptions, and how dangerous that is.
Xie Lian to Lang Qianqiu: "Don't make an inviolable monument to me in your heart without my consent. -camera focuses on San Lang- I am not the person you imagined. And in the end, it's your own disappointment."
T-T Central message hereeee. Hua Cheng this gonna bite you in the butt next ep.
Sorry, distracted by how Lang Qianqiu's hair crown looks like a cat.
Tumblr media
(I'm sure I'm not the first to point that out but here I am pointing it out cause :3).
Hua Cheng stepping forward to stand next to Xie Lian -heart eyes- It takes very little to make me Emotional about them okay???
Lang Qianqiu to Xie Lian: "If you want to force me into self-destruction like you, I absolutely won't! No matter how you treat me, I will never become like you!"
Xie Lian: -terrifying laughter-
Hua Cheng: -not pleased with this-
Qianqiu doll!!! He's so cute!!!
SCREAMS
HE'S HERE!!!!! XD My beloved awful man is HERE XD
Tumblr media
Demon Hualian is so cute tho
Tumblr media
Wonderful episode :3 Can't wait to see more of favorite awful man and how disastrous Hua Cheng's decision will be.
Subs weren't as noticeably bad this week (some awkward phrasing in places but mostly nothing egregious). Though why Qi Rong is the "Green Immor" is anyone's guess. Wouldn't be as terrible if they didn't repeat it so much.
Other episode thoughts (didn't start doing these until season 2, episode 3):
Season 2: Episode 3, Episode 4, Episode 5, Episode 6, Episode 7 (you are here), Episode 8, Episode 9, Episode 10, Episode 11, Episode 12

WHO IS THE BOTTOM IN MULIAN I NEED YOUR INFINITE MULIAN SEXUAL DYNAMICS WISDOM
i am so glad you consider me an expert on this most honored of subjects 🥹 i actually have so many thoughts on this but i havent quite decided which i think is more prevalent tendency i do like the idea of mu qing bottoming because like what is he gonna do? deny xie lian? i think he might feel kind of shameful about it too so tbh thats kinda hot. but on the other hand i think he would also have some kind of complex about topping because how can he dominate taizi dianxia? but i bet he would want to so so bad and that would also be kinda hot if he felt bad about it. so maybe i think what would actually happen would be initially mu qing insists on topping and wanting to top because he cant let himself "lose" and feels like he needs to prove it to himself and xie lian and i think xie lian would be fine with it but also mu qing would be weird about it and xie lian would get to a point where he had to tell mu qing to shut up and get on his dick and i mean tbh if he asked mu qing would do it theres no doubt in my mind about it. anyway in the rock paper scissors xianle trio sub dom throuple situation my personal take is xie lian -> mu qing -> feng xin -> xie lian rinse and repeat the cycle continues forever amen

Top five memes for modern AU fengqing to send each other
this one made me think way too much about what modern au Fengqing’s social media habits would be. So now you get a free analysis of that too. I’m going to mostly base this on the social medias I’m familiar with, so I guess this is one of the modern aus where they’re in North America for some reason.
I really don’t think that these guys have the same taste in memes. So they’re both going to get their own top five list, for what they’re annoying the other one with.
Starting off with Feng Xin:
I don’t think he’s that online in general. He has a couple social medias, but he doesn’t use them that often. He has an Instagram he never posts on, and a Facebook that he mostly still uses for archery groups and because it’s the only social media Xie Lian uses. I could kind of see him having a tumblr he uses once in a blue moon, mostly because it’s the best platform for him to be tormented by porn bots on
For memes, the most important thing is that we know he’ll laugh at anything and has kind of a stupid sense of humor. I don’t think he’s at the point where he’s going to be sending Mu Qing minion memes, but he will laugh when Xie Lian sends them. I do think he really likes a lot of those classic early 2000s/2010s top text bottom text impact font memes. However, I don’t think he really likes any of the overtly horny ones
His top five to send to Mu Qing include:
1. Grumpycat. She reminds him of Mu Qing. On a similar note I think he also likes the courage wolf ones
2. I think he likes to use a lot of reaction images and gifs when talking to Mu Qing. This annoys him so much and that makes Feng Xin do it more
3. Arrow to the knee. I don’t even know if he’s played Skyrim in this au, but he likes that theres an archery themed meme he can annoy Mu Qing with. If Mu Qing sees it one more time he’s about to reach through the phone and throttle him
4. Any of those impact font memes that have a picture of an animal or some other thing, and a pun caption. He really likes these ones
5. Rick Roll. He will keep trying to rick roll Mu Qing and it will never work.
Now for Mu Qing: He’s a bit more difficult to figure out than Feng Xin. For his social media use, we know that he’s both pretentious and chronically online, at least based on how he acts in the communication array. This is leading me to thing that he’s probably more active on the discourse heavy platforms, like tumblr, twitter, reddit, and tiktok. His favourite hobby is telling people they’re stupid on the internet.
But also, I think he’s somewhat specific about the sort of arguments he gets in. He likes getting into discourse, but he’d probably find it cringe to get into fandom discourse or really niche queer discourse. He’s an online weirdo, but he’s not the type of online weirdo who has a massive dni that read like “DNI Nazis, terfs and my little pony fans,” in that order.
So I think he’d probably be on reddit the most, frequenting snark subs and circlejerk subs. Also hobbydrama, any of the aita subs, pop culture, and music subs. He’ll hang out in some niche sword fan communities too, but he’s probably also been permanently banned from a couple for getting into arguments and telling people to kill themselves. But also, he probably won’t send Feng Xin much of this, because he doesn’t want to be perceived
I’m not sure he’s the biggest fan of memes. Mostly because he doesn’t think a lot of them are very funny. He’s also going to be pretty choosy about what he sends to Feng Xin.
1. Not strictly a meme, but sometimes he’ll send him aita/relationship advice posts when he finds something that’s so obviously fake he needs to complain about it. And he’s right
2. In a similar vein, i think a lot of the memes he’s sending him aren’t things he actually thinks are funny, but moreso things that piss him off and he wants to complain about it. If something goes viral and it annoys him Feng Xin’s going to be the person who hears about it.
3. Any meme about hating a friends boyfriend. He and Feng Xin are sending each other “I hope Jakey dies” over and over whenever Hua Cheng pisses them off
4. Continuing with the theme of him being a little hater, he’s probably sending Feng Xin a lot unhinged home design videos and weird houses he finds while stalking zillow. Mostly to make fun of them
5. Any memes he find that are making fun of things he hate. These are probably mostly tumblr and reddit posts. Maybe a starter pack or a parody comic if he’s feeling open to it

[META] The Wu Xie Corollary
Tumblr media
[ID Wu Xie, expression pensive, putting on the mask of Iron Mask Scholar in a dark tomb. End ID]
So! As discussed above, when Li Cu is held captive by the Wang Family in Sand Sea, they give him a long indoctrination lecture. In the drama this is clipped quite short and focuses on the ability of Li Cu (like Wu Xie) to read snake pheromones. In the novel it goes on for chapter after chapter after chapter.
One of the other things discussed is a trap that King Mu of Zhou made a long time ago, which Wu Xie fell into – though the details are not explained.
Another is the dragon-pattern box. We get hints of this as early as Vol. 2, during the Qinling God-Tree arc, where it was apparently found and sent to the current Emperor, with a dubious source stating it was opened during the Qing Dynasty – and most of the witnesses died mysteriously soon after in a mysterious fire, mysteriously. There are more hints many books later in the Tibetan Sea Flower novel, where Zhang Qiling mentions it was opened ‘too soon’; it’s connected to a number found in the silk texts, 02200059; and there’s a letter from a German scholar to a “Mr Zhang” circa 2007 stating that they examined the box and agree there’s trouble coming and that: The next arrangement for opening the box is 02200059. It should be the last one. We’re running out of time.
???
Come the Wang Family Lecture Series, the story about the box is that King Mu of Zhou took the immortality elixir of the Queen Mother of the West but did not want to wait out the next part of the process (lying in nourishing jade for several thousand years) in the meteorite as part of her entourage. He – or Iron Mask Scholar if you prefer – incited Lushang-wang to find appropriate jade armour then killed the man and put it on. To ensure that living people would know to wake him up at the right time, says the Wang Family, he fed a baby the same immortality elixir and put the poor wee mite in the dragon-pattern box so that its movements and skin-shedding would turn a timer on the outside of the box and when it clicked over to 02200059 people would know to open both the baby and him up.
According to the Wang Family Lecture Series, the Zhang Family heard about this potentially immortal baby, who might have longevity without the drawbacks they themselves suffered, and wished to set the child up as their holy figure. But when it was opened in the Qing Dynasty, there was no living child. To maintain hope, if nothing else, they subbed in a rando baby with strong qilin blood but no living parents as ‘the immortal baby’ but the deception was exposed and this idol cast down. This false child was still raised, if grudgingly, by his family and eventually appointed the new Zhang Qiling.
Enough details of this version accord with what we know about Zhang Qiling’s past, that I believe the Zhang Family did think there was an immortal baby in that box, etc. etc. But if that’s all the box was, what’s up with that letter from the German occultist, that they think it relevant in the 21st century. Other questions: why mention a trap Wu Xie fell into without explaining what it was? And what happened to the dead box-baby? How can such a vivid plot element just… just fall out of the story?
Not gonna lie, I’ve entertained several theories about that last, trying them on for size, seeing if I might find evidence to prove or disprove them.
– Was the box-baby the source of ancient corpse meat that the Shigou Diao consumed in their rituals? (Nothing says it wasn’t, but there are plenty of ancient corpses around for the chewing. The baby isn’t special.)
– Was the box-baby somehow revived after all and became that complete weirdo and immortal-without-apparent-cause Hei Xiazi? (Well, there are a fair few hints that he was born in the Qing Dynasty, to a wealthy family. Maybe… they adopted him? I can’t rule that out.)
– Was the box-baby somehow revived after all… in the 20th century and subbed into the Wu Family as the heir? (Pros: Wu-mama thought Wu Xie looked strange on the day of his birth; the account of that day makes a point that the family wasn’t in the birthing room except the grandad who was out of sight at the crucial moment, and the grandad cried, after. Seems fishy. Cons: canonically Wu Xie has a strong resemblance to his grandfather and third uncle. If there was a substitution it had to be more complicated than adopting a strange child as a Wu for whatever reason.)
Also not gonna lie, the theory I like is even juicier than those.
(Disclaimer: a lot of what I’m basing this on is themes and recurring motifs throughout the DMBJ series. If the curtains are blue here and something else is blue there maybe they’re connected, sort of thing. That’s never a foolproof argument, so feel free to pat me on the head and wander off as I ramble. )
You’re still here? Okay, let’s go.
If we posit that King Mu of Zhou used the alias of Iron Mask Scholar in the Warring States Period, then that means all the appearances of Iron Mask Scholar in Time Raiders are really about King Mu of Zhou. You know that “trap” the Sand Sea novel says Wu Xie fell into, without giving the details? Well, Time Raiders shows us details. A literal trap, as Wu Xie falls into a lower level of an ancient tomb to find a complicated mechanical set-up, and a mask, and a story about the terrible Snake Empress. A metaphorical trap, as Wu Xie puts the mask on, interspersed with shots of Iron Mask Scholar in chains or touching his own mask in horror. A plot-inducing trap, where Wu Xie and his family obviously have to head out to the Tamutuo tomb immediately and end up enacting Iron Mask Scholar’s will. An existential trap, because the second-to-last shot of this movie is Wu Xie wearing Iron Mask Scholar’s full mask and regalia, after a speech – “This should be a story about me and him. Whether he should tell the story about me, or me about him,”  – overlaid over three people, not two, including frenetic clips of him laying out cards juxtaposed with Iron Mask Scholar laying out encrypted golden texts.

Who exactly does Wu Xie mean by ‘me’ and ‘him’?
In Which We Discuss Themes and Recurring Motifs
There’s a recurring theme of doubles and copies and masks in the DMBJ series. In Tibetan Sea Flower, Wu Xie is lured to Jila Temple with a copy of a painting of Zhang Qiling. By Vol. 8 there are two Ghost Seals, whatever it is they really do. The final answer to the mystery of whether Wu Sanxing killed Xie Lianhuan or vice versa, is Neither – they were sharing Wu Sanxing’s identity. Wu Xie is effectively railroaded into putting on San-shu’s face and identity in a chapter titled Fear the Face of Reincarnation
I did as [A-Tou] asked, and she immediately put the human skin mask on my face. At that moment, my ears suddenly rang with Uncle Three’s words: “Some masks can’t be taken off if they’re worn too long.” (Vol. 7 Stone Shadow in Qiong Cave, Ch 60 Fear the Face of Reincarnation, tl MereBear)
Throughout his time living as San-shu, he several times reports feeling like San-shu, making plans like San-shu, being burdened by San-shu’s life. When it comes off:
When I saw my face again, I burst into tears. I didn’t think I would feel so vulnerable at this time. I felt as if I had unloaded countless burdens of strength, courage, responsibility, determination, bloodshed, and cruelty. I had finally changed back to Wu Xie. (Vol. 8 The Finale, Ch 74 Return to Zero, tl MereBear)
I’m. I’m honestly wondering how much of this arc was deliberately engineered by Xiao Hua, for whatever reason. The mistake in code breaking that lost Zhang Qiling’s party underground was caused by a simple pebble, which Xiao Hua could very easily have planted. Xiao Hua makes excuses for why he cannot just help Wu Xie raise a rescue party and while those excuses are plausible they vanish as soon as Wu Xie agrees to duplicate his uncle, whereupon Xiao Hua is constantly at his side helping Wu Xie successfully enact this “reincarnation”.
I don’t know why Xiao Hua would want to do that. He certainly never admits to sabotaging his mission. Mebbe he was just trying to be helpful and his strings were pulled as much as Wu Xie’s. But he’s just. He’s just So Helpful here.
And how, do you ask, does this have anything to do with anything about King Mu of Zhou and the dragon-pattern box which is said to have had a baby inside it?
Dominating Idols
Another theme that comes up in the Wang Family Lecture Series is the idea of “dominating idols” – stories so attractive they are inevitably believed, which are ultimately deceptive distractions. Remember that mention in Tibetan Sea Flower of the German scholar saying the next number of the box is 02200059? In the 21st century? How can it still be relevant if it was broken open in the Qing Dynasty? The Wang Family story says there was no living baby inside.
So – did the immortal baby die, or was it never there at all?
The Face of Reincarnation
Curiously enough, an early chapter of Tibetan Sea Flower, the arc wherein Wu Xie gets the push to become a monster, a master of cause-and-effect so skilled he defeats the entire Wang Family, a driven man, a burdened man, who takes a loooong time to detoxify from that man and become something like his former, innocent self, Ch 5, is called The Beginning of Reincarnation.
Here’s something Wu Xie says in a pheromone dream to his intended successor in Sand Sea:
It’s very sad waiting for my fate because as long as someone can replace me, I’ll be mercilessly erased. (Sand Sea, Ch 110 Choice, tl MereBear)
And here’s a conversation from the end of Ultimate Note, where Xiao Hua  convinces Wu Xie to put on his uncle’s identity but then Wu Xie starts talking about being trained as a child…
Xiao Hua: I have been thinking, what plan did [he] make? And I only got these three ideas so far. First, through this journey and clues he provided, [he] wanted to hand over his plan to you, and make you the next successor. Second, he’s slowly passing on to you his way of thinking so that you will know and understand about It, and will be able to fight It. Third, he wanted you to become [him], the person who executes the plan … Wu Xie: All of you call me the Chosen One, but I’ve never believed in that. A replacement must be prepared. Since [I was] young, I learned to write Shou Jin font, I listened to the mysterious stories my grandpa told, and I explored many places with Uncle San. Everything I did growing up was planned out. I was chosen, trained, and made the Chosen One, maybe only to become a replacement, or one of the replacements. … Xiao Hua: So, replacement is another form of immortality. The immortality of an identity. Wu Xie, you have no choice ... WX: Maybe, with a thorough plan which is made meticulously, what is fake may become real. And I can become that person.  (Ultimate Note, Ep 36, iQiYi subs)
I put it to you that “reincarnation” is used to describe the Assumption of San-shu in Vol. 7 because that is what it was, however temporary. I put it to you that “reincarnation” is used near the start of Tibetan Sea Flower because that is again what happened – the forcing of Wu Xie to take on another’s identity and enact his will.
I put it to you that the box-baby was a dominating idol that never truly existed, that the mask Wu Xie puts on in Time Raiders belongs to King Mu of Zhou, that from the day of his birth Wu Xie was the sacrificial child to bring the ancient monarch into the present day and during Tibetan Sea Flower and Sand Sea that is exactly what he did.
(Why? Fuck if I know. Probably something to do with the Queen Mother of the West.)
Will he take on King Mu of Zhou’s aspect and raise up his attributes again? As of 2024, looking at the end of Queen of the West’s Ghost Banquet, I don’t think heaven is done with Wu Xie. But then again, the Assumption of San-shu looks like a training run to me. Maybe the Assumption of King Mu of Zhou is also, in its way, a training run, and there’s something else reaching out for our boy.
Eh. I’m sure it will turn out fine…

Addendum: I'm really interested in if the TSF drama will touch on the dragon-pattern box, not gonna lie.
META The King Mu of Zhou/Iron Mask Scholar Theorem

Okay okay okay, I wrote a version of this with quotes and chapter references but it’s quite long so I suspect not many people have read it. (No judgement, I know it’s long, I feel it.) But this definitely is something I want to talk about, so I’m doing a paperplane version for tumblr.
So! The very first adventure in this series, Wu Xie encounters a double-layer tomb with a (living) man wrapped in jade armour who is promptly murdered by Zhang Qiling. The closest thing we get to an explanation is:
– Lushang-wang raided a Western Zhou tomb for immortality secrets, then built his own tomb over it so he could peacefully bake in the armour for a couple of thousand years, to finish the immortality process.
– Lushang-wang murdered by his advisor, a fengshui expert named Iron Mask Scholar, who also put on the armour.
– Iron Mask Scholar killed some time later by Zhang Qiling.
– The map to this tomb is one of a set of famously-encrypted documents sometimes known as the Warring State Silk Texts or more specifically the Lu Yellow Silks, or some variant in-between.
Tumblr media
[ID Overhead view of a sarcophagus under a great tree, with various lids and layer scattered around it, and inside – and sitting up – is a body dressed in armour made of laced-together plates of dull jade. Wu Xie etc. recoil in alarm. End ID]
Come Vol. 4 Snake Marsh Ghost City, Wu Xie explicitly identifies the author of these Lu Yellow Silks as Iron Mask Scholar. He describes him as “the Leonardo da Vinci of Lu State” who encrypted documents to get important secrets distributed against the wishes of a higher power. (This is also the book that introduces King Mu of Zhou as a relevant historical figure, in the form of a stone mural which heavily implies his account of a diplomatic visit to the Queen Mother of the West was an outright lie.)
There are some bits and bobs throughout the rest of the main book series, specifically, part of the history of the Jiumen going on a super big raid to find a whole stash of Lu Yellow Silks to decipher for secrets of immortality on behalf of their current patron. The novel version of this arc doesn’t really dig into who wrote them and focuses on the effect they had in the 20th century. The Ultimate Note version changes the author to King Mu of Zhou and brings in a story initially written for the Sand Sea novel – King Mu of Zhou obtained an immortality elixir from the Queen Mother of the West but didn’t want to stay in her country to complete the process by sleeping in jade. Instead he made jade armour of his own and… put a baby in a jade box: “He built two figurines with jade meteorite. One figurine to contain himself, with another to contain a baby. After taking the pill, he planned to break the figurine in a few years under certain conditions. He would be reborn as a baby and attain longevity.” (UN, Ep 35, iQiyi subs).
Tumblr media
[ID A painting of a great cavern with rough pillars, with the irregular shape of what might be a meteorite in the background. In the midground are two upright lumps of jade of equal proportions. Vague shadows inside indicate an adult in the left one, and a child in the other. End ID]
Skippy skip through some Jiumen stuff and some Tibetan Sea Flower stuff that suggests Zhang Qiling was the baby in the box… we get to Sand Sea proper, in which the chief antagonists are the Wang Family, descendants of Wang Zanghai from the Ming Dynasty.
But, say the Wang Family, we didn’t start this. Actually you need to go back thousands of years to King Mu of Zhou. The drama version of this revelation is a very clipped lecture, albeit with some interesting art, which mostly focuses on the snake eyebrow copper fish and the snake pheromones etc. etc. (It’s a fair call – sometimes you just gotta focus.) The novel version is very, very long, placed in the novel where you would normally expect the big climax/plot resolution/massive multiplayer final action scene to be. Some key points:
– Wang-laoshi keeps explaining that he isn’t lying but he is leaving gaps in the story for his student to figure out.
– We go right back to the story of Lushang-wang raiding a Western Zhou tomb, this time specifying that it belonged to King Mu of Zhou himself. Also that Iron Mask Scholar incited Lushang-wang to take up graverobbing from the start. He wasn’t an opportunist but a strategic planner who provided a “ghost edict” in King Mu of Zhou’s handwriting explaining that it was totes okay to dig up his tomb, the ghost of King Mu of Zhou thought that was fine, break out the shovel, kid.
– Story interrupted by a student explaining that for the handwritten edict to exist, King Mu of Zhou must still have been alive somehow to write it. (No forgers in Ancient China.) The teacher agrees, explaining that King Mu of Zhou took the Queen Mother of the West’s immortality elixir but could not by himself find jade armour to neutralise the deleterious side effects.
– FROM THEN ON Iron Mask Scholar is not in this story. This is now a story about King Mu of Zhou manipulating Lushang-wang from the shadows, creating the mechanism of a baby in a small dragon-pattern box as a timer and synchronous key for his own coffin, creating the Lu Yellow Silks which as we know were written in the Warring States Era and explicitly attributed to the guy who hid his face all the time………
– In addition, the rather odd (but fun) movie Time Raiders also features Iron Mask Scholar as a key player, this time writing his secrets on copper tablets not silk and also creating a box which is both a timer and a key, like that dragon-pattern box attributed to King Mu of Zhou.
My Conclusion:
King Mu of Zhou and Iron Mask Scholar’s deeds were so often conflated because they were the same guy. This is the truth hinted at by Wang-laoshi and Xu Lei.
