I find storytelling like this amusing.. so two characters you can find in Suikoden 3 are a Master and Apprentice mage … if you check the apprentice's gear he has the worst possible equipment in the game (despite being level 40) … and if you check his runes, he has the Firefly Rune equipped… which is a permanent taunt effect.

So while the game never outright says it, you can tell his Master treats him like shit.

The differences in the battle portraits between acts are so good. Like, Act 2's portrait is shocked, but later portraits aren't. He's repeated this performance so many times, that they see the misstep and accept it. Who cares? Win or lose, he'll just loop again.

I don’t think there was anything that could prepare me for the violent, gut-wrenching grief the game Spiritfarer caused me when I first played it. Like going into it I knew what it was about and it still caught me off guard with how human and gentle it is. Sprout, Scout, Honeybee, Munchkin, Peanut, Bambina, Bella, Little One, Big Hat, Commander... Stella was so much to so many people and she didn't need to speak once to communicate her love and care.

The futality of it all... The fact we tried so hard to save them this time but we couldn't stop them from meeting their fate once more... Only take them there and give them one last hug... And they never left us! They watch us and guide us from the stars!

Subtext. Carmy pays attention to Sydney as soon as she enters his view. He always has.

She's blurred in this shot, but watch Carmy. He doesn't even finish the second 'yeah' before his eyes land on her- he already notices that Sydney is here. She is dressed nicely, and he needs to focus on her.

Very subtle, but once Sydney turns around, the camera pans to the center and is focused shot when Sydney turns around- his perspective that once he gets her attention, his eyes are only for Sydney?

Let's skip when she says good morning- subtext- between the lines- the acting. Carmy has dreamy eyes, and words slow down as he gets a good look at Sydney- his second no is almost breathless- there's a pause before he gives her a compliment.

Carmy- I think we get all this body language from Sydney because we're in Carmy's point of view- he's paying attention to her monotone- thanks and her resignation as she takes off her bow.

We know this because of the look on his face when she asks him, "How about you? Did you answer?

He takes a moment to catch up to what she asked him, blinking as if he's coming back to the present moment.

His thoughts were somewhere else.

They cut this really fast so we dont see his expression had changed to one of openness when he tells her she looks nice- to a pondering frown as he's watching her remove her bow. He has been staring at her like that the entire time, feeling sad as she quickly takes off the items he had been noticing.

Subtext for me? I think he hopes she will explain why she is so dressed up. Perhaps he is thinking she was on a date? He knows she was out with someone.

Throughout the season, underneath everything being said and done- we're seeing that Carmy is still paying attention to Syd. Still focused on her (not the restaurant but her!) Even with the misdirection of Claire.

I will provide screenshots of this man's disappointment. They deliberately do not show his face change as he watches her take off what he noticed she was wearing; it’s a small reaction.

Marcus' words earlier in 3x03 about paying attention - he also says when someone pays attention- like really pays attention, it's something special. The subtext tells us what Carmy and Sydney have, always paying attention to each other - the message is that the relationship is special and we should be paying attention to this thing between them.

Now I'm just thinking about Potter and how neatly they showed us exactly what they wanted us to expect from this man. Dude walks into a MASH unit with all his regular Army trappings and, like, of course he's going to act exactly like he's been taught to as a superior officer. Everyone here went through basic. They all know the rules. Obviously they're all going to follow them.

I feel like somewhere in the middle of reading Hawkeye's file specifically is where the shift happens. This man is absolutely ridiculous. It's mindboggling, everything that he got away with to the present day. In fact, it's impressive. Sherm got into the Army at age 15, for Christ's sake. I feel like he can remember exactly what it felt like to be a child joking around and pulling pranks with his friends in between moments of carnage. He reads over some of the shit Hawk's done and probably wishes he'd been able to do it himself in his younger days.

That's where the switch finally gets flipped. What the hell is he doing, trying to treat this like a regular Army camp? He can't hold rigid expectations over them. It would be absurd. All he can really hope for is to request that maybe they not fuck around so bombastically that they all end up in hot water because of it. But he's not gonna sit down and have a quiet, reflective moment about it—that's not his style. He muses on things while continuing to move forward through his day, stoic, solid, prepared for any emergency that might occur. It's why the shift feels so sudden to the audience. He made his decision to treat this camp like human beings ripped away from their homes and coping the best they can far before he admitted longingly how much he could use a belt. He simply learned to play his cards as close to the chest as possible long, long ago.
