I have a really bad migraine right now but thankfully I am home. So I can just be a lump in bed and rest in the AC. I am really happy to be home right now.
And it wasn't a bad day. It was just really warm. I was just covered in a light layer of sweat all day. I drank a lot of water but I still really felt dehydrated. Which is probably why I have the migraine now. It started in the afternoon. But for most of the day I was fine.
I had trouble falling asleep last night. I don't think I fell asleep until 1:30. And it wasn't a bad sleep. I woke up at 6:00 and was a little unhappy about that but I felt okay. And then I blinked and it was 8:00. I have no idea how quickly I fell asleep.
It took me a while to get up and get myself together. But that was fine. I knew I wanted to wear my Hawaiian pants today. For Hawaiian shirt Wednesday. And I had my biscuit but I had a bad taste in my mouth and it didn't really like the jelly that I had. It was like mixed fruit and I did not enjoy that. But it was fine.
Tatiana came again today and it turns out she did not have the loom. So I have no idea where the 12th one went. She looked at me like what and tried to look around same way I did and neither of us can find it So I'm just assuming a child took it. And it's gone. Which sucks but I ended up just continuing using the cardboard looms today and the kids really liked it and so honestly in the end it worked out.
We had two groups this morning and they did a good job. We had top bar and then pioneers. We finished girl week and we start boy week. And the boys were good. Everyone seemed to try pretty hard for the most part. And I enjoyed everyone's company. It was a good day.
And lunch was an actual meal. I did not get the vegetarian option because it was just the same sad sandwich from yesterday. So I had a very good salad because they finally had hard boiled eggs. And I had that and pasta salad and tater tots and we finally finished the special week ketchup. So I texted James because I knew they were going to get groceries. And they would get us a new bottle.
My afternoon groups were again very early for some reason. And I decided to make a sign for the door because they were 15 minutes early and just came through the building to the back and they were like we're here and I was like no no go do something else. But then it turned out that they weren't even the right day camp group and weren't even supposed to be there! My actual day camp group came on time. Cuz then all of a sudden both of them were there and I was like what is happening. And they're counselor came and took them away because it was their CIT that had misread the schedule I guess. But the day campers did really good and it was fun and then we had a little break to reset and Ty came over so I could help him finish his loom knit hat.
Which actually looked really good! It's a little small for how big his hair is but I was really proud of him. We're going to work on sewing next week so we'll see how that goes. And we both have tried to talk about how we're going to try to stay positive and that our materials are coming and things are good. We're going to try our best to be positive. Things will get better.
I had stockade next and they were very good. The curse too much but they're very funny. And they were very sweet. I got to do a lot of sewing and talking to them about stuff and teaching them bracelets. And I enjoyed chatting with Quan and I showed him the camp TikTok I made last night. Which took me a while because I had to make sure I cropped as many kids out as possible but there's one clip where the kids are in the background so I'm hoping those are okay. I'm going to try my best to make sure my angles are better next time. But Quan gave me a cookie and my headache was right behind my eyeballs but I was still having a nice time.
My last day camp group was fun and I had double-checked that horses was not coming this week so I could go home right after my last group. I got their blooms all finished up and showed them how to tie things off and they helped clean up and then they headed out.
I went to the office to let them know I was leaving and to sign out in our little book and I also wanted to just let them know how great Tatiana is doing and how helpful she is and Heather told me that Tatiana was considering taking some AP classes this summer but instead she decided she's going to stay with me and I just think that is so sweet. So even if she is taking away from my sitting in the dark time I really do appreciate her and her tapestry that she worked on today is so good! She put four of the nail looms together to make it and she really is taking to it and I love that so much. I love when people find art that they really enjoy. She's talking about making blankets and stuff too. So proud of her.
After I talk to Heather and Alexi about the art building flooding for a little while longer I let them know I was going to go home. And that my head hurt and I just needed to be in my house for a while and they understood and I said goodbye.
I did get stuck behind that can't bus for a couple minutes but I got out of there and got on the highway. There wasn't really any traffic. I let James know I was coming home and they were going to order pizza for us and they did but then they canceled because the place had no delivery driver so James had to reorder and then walked to the place. I wish I would have caught that text because I just would have went gotten them.
But once I got home I took a shower and that helped me feel a lot better. I still had the headache but it wasn't quite as uncomfortable.
I open the mail and I had a little gift that I had gotten for James come and romper that I ordered. And soon James was home with pizza and I ate that in bed and now James is recording their podcast and being sweetp are laying in the air conditioning.
Sweetp is looking at me with so much love in his eyes and it's so cute. He misses me so much I think! And I hate that he seems so sad about it but he loves me so much when I come home and that is so nice. Even if he is stinky I still am glad that he is next to me.
I'm riding my post early because my head hurts so much and I don't want it to get worse So I'm going to try to get off my phone for a while. I hope you guys all have a great night and I hope tomorrow is fun and not a sweaty. Good night everybody. Have fun out there.

What do you do when there’s not much to an AU? You make up your own stuff, ofc. And as is per usual when I make Character Designs, I make up a shit ton of lore too.
The ramblings under the cut, but what I’m really interested in, is what you guys think. Do you guys have any headcanons/ideas for this AU? Let me hear them! Also, if you don’t wanna read on tumblr, here’s the Google Docs link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/151yshHxnb_--P6eMKkwkI2dee9xC_Llb/view?usp=sharing
Before I get into the characters’ roles, here’s some general facts and backstory of their town:
- Basically, it’s Undertale meets Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley. Well, kinda. I at least used that approach for coming up for the jobs for the characters. You know, how there’s always a general store, a doctor, a smithy, etc.
- The usual story of a HM game is that you come to a town that’s way past its glory days and you, as the player/farmer, help them get back to that. The “backstory” of the town is that that already kinda happened. I’ll get into it more in the character description, but basically when Asgore was still mayor, the town got really popular. Then yadda yadda, a certain tragedy happened, two kids died, and the town suddenly got very bad publicity. There was a lot of stuff going on back then, bad reputation being spread and also a lot of law stuff, cos, you know, supposed child murder ‘n all, so Asgore made the decision to shut off the town to ppl from outside. This was in the interest of most monsters living there, because as fun as it is to have a lot of people coming there, most just wanted to live a quiet life. Not everyone was happy with that though, so many moved away from town and some others are trying to get the town back on its feet. But more on that later.
On to the characters:
I’m just gonna start with the skelebros, cos it’s their fault in the first place I got so invested.
Basically, they are what the player is in hm/sdv. They just showed up one day, took over the abandoned farmhouse and began their life there. The two came to town way after it was “closed” and since then a new mayor has opened the possibility for new residents to move in. Their farm helps the economy of the town a lot and the mayor, like usually in hm games, is trying to use that to make the town more known again. The skelebros aren’t really working towards that goal however.
So, now a bit more detail on them individually.
Papyrus:
- The design is mostly based on what’s “canon” in this au.
- He works mostly on the fields and is in charge of the crops. Their fields aren’t spectacularly big, but still big enough to plant a few dozen rows of veggies.
- Paps also helps out a lot in town when he has the time. He helps Asgore with his plants, he goes fishing with Undyne, helps Toriel carry crates around and so on. This is inspired by the part-time job mechanic in HM ToT.
- Unbelievably, in this AU Pap is not an absolutely awful cook. Since he helps out at Muffet’s and Grillby’s a lot, they tend to show him some tricks to cooking. Even though Pap’s not a big fan of the greasy or overly sweet cooking those two do, he picks up a lot.
Sans:
- Again, design mostly based on the “canon” look. Maybe a bit more baggy.
- This is finally an AU this dude gets to rest. Since there are no resets and he doesn’t have to see his bro die again and again, for once in his life, he’s not a sad ball of depression. He’s just a chill and lazy dude that loves to make puns. Though, since he’s not too experienced with the feelings of loss, helplessness or grieving, he still tends to hide behind puns and fakes smiles if he does feel bad.
- Sans is in charge of the animals on the farm. Papyrus begrudgingly gave him that role since Pap’s loud demeanour and hectic movements usually scare the animals. Sans’ relaxed attitude draws the animals to him naturally and even if Pap mostly finds him sleep against a tree, in a stack of hay or on one of the sheep, the animals are always fed, healthy and relaxed, so Sans seems to be doing his job.
- Sans always has a small chic sit inside his hoodie or hat. Is it always the same one? Who knows, maybe.
- Sans also, somehow, can produce eggs out of thin air. Grab into his hoodie pocket, in his pants pocket, in his hat, in his slipper, there’s suddenly always an egg there. On good days he can even make butter or cheese appear.
Gaster:
- He’s literally just a scarecrow in this. Though, if you ask any of the bros why they designed their scarecrow that way, they won’t have an answer.
Frisk&Toriel:
- Frisk is mostly based on what I wore myself as a kid in summer. Just a loose shirt with a cappy. Toriel basically has her ut gown, just with an apron on top.
- Frisk just appeared outside the “magical” forest one day. Napstablook and his cousin found them and brought them to Toriel, who has been taking care of them since.
- Toriel runs the general store in town, but also often takes care of the few kids that still live there.
- Frisk usually helps out in Toriels store, plays with the other kids or sits around at Asgore’s. They’re notorious for nabbing small snacks, mostly from Asgore’s plants. You’ll always find them munching on something.
- Frisk was in town before the skelebros. Since they’d moved in, Frisk often went to spy on their farm. After a small incident with angry chicken, Frisk got to know the two better and now they see them as something between brothers and uncles.
- But Frisk honestly gets along with everyone. Just like in UT, they’ve not only been adopted by Toriel but literally everyone.
- Toriel and Asgore’s relationship is not as bad as in the main game, since, you know, Asgore didn’t kill literal children, but there’s still tension between them. Back when Asriel and Chara died and the whole thing with the bad rep for the town began, Toriel felt betrayed by Asgore focusing more on the town than giving their deceased kids the grieving they deserved. They’re not divorced, but Toriel still moved out and said needed space to think. Now that Frisk is in the picture though, the both of them are slowly coming to even ground and may even be able to talk things out and clear up the uncertainty of their decisions.
Asgore:
-Asgore has his UT Ending / Deltarune clothes, just with a gardener’s belt.
- He’s the previous mayor of the town, but after all the crap that happened, he stepped down from the position. Now he has his own little shop and sells seeds, saplings, homegrown veggies and fertilizer. So, basically what e.g. the Marimba Farm is in HM AP
- His main customer is Papyrus and they’re on friendly terms. Asgore is worried about how much and how hard Pap works, so he often gives him a discount.
- Since his family’s past tragedy, Asgore is kind of nervous around kids. So, when he first met Frisk, he hoped they’d not visit him too often. But to his chagrin, Frisk took an instant liking to him and spends a lot of time at his shop (and steals eats the fresh grown veggies). Now, he’s really grateful for that, because for one, he loves Frisk as dearly as he had his own children, and also because now the tension and mistrust between him and Toriel seem to grow smaller day by day.
Undyne&Alphys:
- I gave Undyne a pretty basic fisher’s outfit. Alphys basically has Elli from HM’s outfit, just a bit more doctory stuff added. She still has her canon lab coat too.
- In essence, Undyne and Alphys have 2 completely different jobs. Alphys is the resident doctor and Undyne runs the fish market.
Two things. Yes, I know Alphys is more a mechanic than a doctor, she fits the aesthetic though, so she’s the doc now. And no, Undyne being a fisherwoman is not cannibalism, think of it more as a shark hunting smaller fish.
- The reason I lump them together is because they act as the local “smithy”. Alphys is still really tech savvy in this (I mean, Mettaton is still part of this AU), so she takes on most problems with electronics and stuff. For Undyne, I didn’t want to lose her Royal Guard’s Captain image, so she’s really good at handling tools (and weapons, but Al doesn’t let her make them anymore). So basically, if there’s a broken tool, you can be sure that either Undyne or Alphys can fix it.
- As for relationships, those two are still an item. Alphys is still really shy and a shut-off, but since Undyne and Pap become best friends, she gets to know the skelebros better. She and Sans especially get along well, since most of the time Undyne and Papyrus are let loose, they sit back and talk about science-y stuff. (no, Sans doesn’t have a background in science but he’s still into sci-fi)
- Alphys has a bit of a strained relationship with both Asgore and Mettaton.
Back when Chara and Asriel died, it was because of “illness” (maybe poisoning?). Alphys feels awful because with her back then limited knowledge on medicine she couldn’t help the two. Asgore doesn’t hold anything against her but Alphys can’t help but feel guilty.
Alphys still built Mettaton’s body in this one. The two had a really big disagreement, because Mettaton hated the fact the town was going to close, and he couldn’t understand how Alphys could feel otherwise, even more so endorse the idea.
Mettaton, Napstablook, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew:
- Napsta and Dummy are pretty self-explanatory, they got straw hats. Mettaton’s outfit is a bit of a joke cos it’s a play on “work at the top and party at the bottom”. The tie has two different sides, one with the yellow red pattern, the other completely red. His “top part” is the business part, because when he’s on tv or in the mayors’ office, you don’t usually see his feet. The bottom is his party/dance part, cos his dancing/entertainment channels mostly feature his legs.
- Mettaton, still a robot, Napstablook and Mad Dummy are all still cousins in this AU.
- Originally, they all lived and worked at the Blook Farm, the Animal Farm of this AU. Mettaton, however, despised that simple live and after befriending Alphys and her building him a body, he left the Farm to pursue bigger things.
- Mettaton runs the local tv network. From weather to game shows, he does it all. He also runs the tailor shop in town that sells his designer clothes and merchandise. After Asgore stepped down, Mettaton also took over the role of town’s mayor and now works towards making the place more known again. Not everybody is happy with him doing that though.
- One of those people is the Mad Dummy. He can’t stand people anyways and he always claims that history would just repeat itself.
- Since the whole family is made of ghosts, they have different dummies and scarecrows they can use to take care of the animals. To mock Mettaton and kinda get back at Alphys for giving MTT such an opportunity, Mad Dummy found the blueprints for the Mew Mew robot and now modelled one of their scarecrows after it.
- Napstablook isn’t fond of taking over obejcts like his cousins do, so he mostly takes care of the snails. Somehow, he can interact with them even when incorporeal.
Muffet&Grillby:
- The two of them run the Inn together. Muffet cooks in the daytime and makes desserts, Grillby manages the bar in the evening.
- The two still can’t really stand each other but working together like this benefits them both because their rivalry just spurs them on more.
- Even though Grillby is a patient person, somehow Muffet is the only person who riles him up enough to retaliate. (Well, maybe except for Sans, he’s a strong second).
So, basically everything between those two is a challenge in some way. Even if Papyrus doesn’t notice, even his cooking lessons are a challenge for them.
- Even though they’re constantly bickering, after working together for so many years, there’s a strange level of respect and trust between them. Even if back when they first started this business, they’d pour salt into an already open wound, nowadays they’d know better and just take a step back from the other or even comfort the other (on very rare occasions only).
Asriel&Chara:
- They be dead. Kinda.
Some Characters that’d live in that town too but that I haven’t made designs for:
- Gerson is the original smithy of the town. He’d grown up in a family of smiths, but he’d always had an appreciation for the sea. That’s why, when the town became more deserted and Undyne had a good enough skill level as smith, he took up the Captains hat and now mostly spends his days out on sea. He also ferries people to places if they need him to. Oh, and just like in canon, Undyne learned most of her skills from him.
- Burgerpants is a poor dude Mettaton basically kidnapped when he was trying to get fame in the city. Now Burgerpants works wherever MTT needs him to, be that as cameraman for the tv shows, cashier in his tailor shop or his slave secretary in the mayor’s office.
- MK is Frisk’s best kid friend. MK’s parents are in charge of shipping the goods out of town and paying the individual people. MK’s the one that usually collects the goods at the end of the day.
- Other than that, there are only a few people in town. I’d imagine the older folks or the really young families stayed in town after it was closed. I think the librarby dude would still run the library. Some Snowdin residents like the stone family or the dogs also might still live there.

Honeysuckle
Chapter Two
Master List | Venom Master List
Previous Chapter
Pairing: Eddie Brock x OFC | Word Count: 2409 Warnings: Language. Italics indicate mental conversations. Bold is clearly Venom.
The scent woke her first, tickling her senses enough to see Cassidy rousing from the weird dream of a black slicked body, the substance moving like oil in a strangely beautiful way over the man it was part of. Bacon. She smiled to herself, wondering if her dad was cooking breakfast when the reality of her life came crashing down on her.
Her parents were dead. Her sister and brother were both dead. The pillow beneath her head wasn't her own, and she had no idea where she was.
“Eddie, she wakes.”
The voice brought terror screaming through her veins, and Cassidy sat up with a jolt that made her grunt, wince, and grab for her side only to notice the clothes she wore weren't hers.
“Hey. Morning.”
Cassidy looked up to find the man from last night standing in the doorway. He hunched a little, as if waiting for a blow or reprimand, and fiddled with his fingers.
“I, uh, we had to change your clothes. You bled right through your shirt and pants. There's a bullet wound in your side, more a nick really, glancing blow, but the one in your hip looked like shrapnel from a ricochet. Venom says he got it all out and did what he could to fix it, but you're not compatible so he couldn't heal you all the way.”
She blinked, unable to fully comprehend someone who talked that fast.
“Breakfast.”
“Right! There's breakfast. Toast. Eggs. Tattered tots. Bacon. Wasn't sure what you'd want.”
“Where the hell am I?” Cassidy asked, and who the hell else was talking?
“Our place,” he said. “I'm Eddie, remember? And you met Venom last night.”
“Nine feet tall. Back as spilled ink. Shiny white teeth?”
“That would be him. Us,” he nodded. “I never did catch your name.”
“Vicky.” She grabbed for a name off the top of her head.
“Nice to meet you, Vicky. Funny thing about that is,” he held out his hand, and a black tendril of goo snuck around his shoulder to place her wallet in his hand. “Your driver’s license says, Cassidy Granger. Iowa, huh? Who the hell did you piss off to wind up with a middle name like Bertha?”
“You went through my stuff!”
“Wow, lady!” Eddie held up his hands. “Chill out! We just wanted to make sure you didn’t have some medical condition we needed to worry about. You passed out, and we helped.”
Cassidy sat back and pulled the blankets up around her chin. “You’re right. I’m sorry. This is all… really weird.”
Eddie lowered his hands and stepped cautiously in the door. He moved closer, finally taking a seat on the foot of what must have been his bed. The room was too lived in to be a guest room. “Can you tell me what those guys last night wanted with you?”
She shrugged and looked away. “Don’t know. Muggers maybe.”
“She lies.”
Cassidy’s head snapped up, and she stared at the head floating to the left of Eddie’s. “Holy shit…”
“Venom can tell when your lying. Something about pheromones. So you wanna try that again?”
Unable to look away from the floating black head with the same teeth and eyes as the creature from last night, Cassidy mumbled, “How… how are you doing that?”
“He’s a parasite.”
“I am not a parasite! I am a symbiote. He is my host. Together, we are Venom.”
“I… I thought… you were Venom?” Cassidy asked.
“It’s complicated,” Eddie muttered. “Long story short, he’s from outer space, can’t survive on this world without a human host. We got together a while ago and, well, kind of ended up saving the planet. I’m Eddie Brock-”
“The reporter?” Cassidy squeaked.
“Yeah.” Eddie nodded. “And he’s Venom. But when bad stuff goes down, what you saw last night happens, and then we become Venom.” He shrugged when she only continued to stare at him. “It’s a thinker, but that’s us… in-in a nutshell.”
“Do people… know about this?” Cassidy waggled her fingers at the two of them.
“Not a lot, no. But some. My ex, she knew, but there was this explosion and Venom almost died, and since then we just… didn’t tell her he… didn’t.”
For someone who was a reporter, he wasn’t overly articulate or sure of himself. From his hand, a tendril of the black ooze she now knew was Venom wormed its way across the bed and up to her knee where it became a long-fingered hand held out as if to shake.
“He likes you. Which is saying something as Venom doesn’t like many people.”
She glanced at Eddie, then slowly lowered the blanket and tentatively took the offered hand. “Um… hi?”
“You smell good. We won’t eat you.” The white teeth spread into a macabre smile.
Eddie stiffened and shot the floating head a hard look. “What the hell, man?”
Cassidy blinked, trying not to shiver at the feel of warm goo caressing her flesh. “What? He didn’t say anything.”
“Not out loud,” Eddie muttered, pink dusting his cheeks.
“You two… talk telepathically?” Her life just kept getting weirder, and the goo was still holding her hand.
“Yeah. Sort of. He’s kind of just in there all the time,” Eddie murmured, wrapping his knuckles against his temple. “Least I’m never lonely.”
It was a telling statement and made Cassidy’s heart ache a little for him, even though she knew nothing about him. Well, other than the explosive reporting he often got into on TV. “So… breakfast?” she asked.
“Sure!” Eddie hopped up with a grin.
Venom tugged on her hand. “Tater tots are my favourite.”
Okay, how was a black slime, goo monster, creature, parasite, thing suddenly as adorable as a puppy?
“Um… pants?”
“Right! Sorry.” Eddie rushed over to a dresser and tugged open the second drawer. “I put your shirt and jeans in the wash, and, um, we tried our best not to, you know, ogle you or anything when we changed your shirt and stuff. It’s just you were really bleeding and-”
“Eddie,” she held up her hand and offered him a smile as Venom finally detached from her fingers. “I get it. And I appreciate you not, like, letting me die and all in that alleyway. Just let me put some clothes on, and we can talk over breakfast.”
“Sure, sure.” He tossed a pair of sweats on the bed and headed out of the room, Venom trailing behind. The last tendril of darkness swung the door shut behind them.
Cassidy breathed a sigh of relief and threw back the covers, forgetting for a moment about the wound in her side. He’d left her in her underwear, so she was ninety percent certain there hadn't been any funny business, plus he seemed… shy.
A nice guy, clearly, but Cassidy couldn’t afford to let any more people into her life. Not when they all kept dying because of her.
Dragging the sweats on, she looked frantically around and found her wallet lying on the top of the dresser out of which he’d taken the pants. Her jacket was missing, but the closet was hanging open and had a hoodie she carefully took down to keep the hanger from jangling. Zipping it up, she stuffed her wallet in the pocket. By the door were her shoes, likely where Eddie had tossed them when they’d brought her home and cleaned her up.
Cassidy stuffed her feet into them and headed for the window. The fire escape was right there. All she had to do was use it.
The window stuck, squeaked a little, and finally slid all the way up. Luckily, the noise didn’t seem to register with the occupants of the other room, and she threw her leg over the windowsill.
A scream ripped from her throat when the black as night body landed on the railing in front of her.
“You can’t leave without breakfast.”
She went over backward into the room and landed on the floor in a heap, sending pain tearing through her hip and side. Cassidy hissed then swore in three languages.
“Impressive. We only know a few of those words.”
Cassidy blinked at him, it, them as they crawled through the window after her, all sinuous limbs and flexing muscle, giant claws and needle-sharp teeth. “Please. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll let me go.”
“We don’t want to.” Venom crouched over her, his hands on either side of her hips. “You bleed.”
Those wickedly dangerous looking claws touched her with deceptive gentleness and pulled back to show the red on them he brought closer to his face.
“Honeysuckle…” Long and red, his tongue slid over and wrapped around his fingers. “Sweet like strawberries.”
“Just let me go,” Cassidy whispered. “You need to let me leave before…”
“Before what?” He crouched lower, hovering over her. Those strange white eyes narrowed as he sniffed her again. Then his tongue was slicking over her throat and along her jaw. “You are afraid. Of us?”
He sounded so unhappy, Cassidy shook her head and scrabbled around until she found his thick fingers. She clutched two of them tightly, willing him to believe her. “No. Not you. But I get people killed. I need to go before they find out about you, or they'll come for you too.”
Venom’s face drew closer; his eyes narrowed in anger. “Who hunts you? We will eat them.”
She gave a startled bark of laughter. “I only wish you could.”
Then Venom was gone, and it was Eddie who hovered over her. “We can help you. It’s kind of what we do. You’ll be safe here with us.”
“No,” she slowly shook her head, “I won’t. And all that will happen is they’ll kill you, or try to take you too.”
“We’re tough to kill, and no one takes us anywhere. Being a lab rat doesn’t appeal to Venom. Or me.” He grinned, and it was boyish, sweet, and so very charming, she wondered what had happened to the shy man of earlier. “Come on. You can eat and tell us what this is all about while I bandage you up again.”
He sat back on his knees and rocked up to his toes, then reached down and picked her up like she weighed nothing.
“What… uh, what happened to your friend?”
“He’s a bit annoyed with you at the moment. He’ll come back when he’s through pouting.” Eddie cocked his head. “Yes, you are pouting. No, I won’t take it back. Stop acting like a child!”
Cassidy stared at him with her mouth slightly open, utterly fascinated.
“Sorry,” Eddie blushed. “It’s like listening to someone on the phone. Back before I figured out how to talk to him up here,” he pointed to his head, “I used to wear a Bluetooth so that people would stop staring at me like I was fucking nuts.”
“I can see how that could be a problem,” Cassidy murmured, following Eddie into the kitchen. Well, technically the rest of his apartment. “You know… I figured you’d live better. You do all that crazy reporting. I thought you’d get paid well. Danger pay and all that.”
“Sometimes," he shrugged, "but I like this place. And the neighbours know me, and they know about Venom. The gangs were harassing a few of the local businesses. You know, for protection money and the like. We took care of the problem. Now the neighbourhood is safe, prospering, and any new gang trying to move in gets to meet Venom.” He grinned over his shoulder at her. “They don’t stick around long.”
“And no one talks about you, him, the whole thing?” she asked, sliding onto the chair he held out at the little Arborite table that looked like it belonged in the seventies.
“Why would they? We protect them without asking for anything. In turn, they keep our secret. Mrs. Chen, she runs the bodega down the block, we kind of… ate the guy who used to come in and harass her at gunpoint for his weekly “protection money”. I told her I had a parasite, and ever since she makes us chicken noodle soup. “For your friend,” she says. I haven’t the heart to tell her he’d rather eat live chickens.” Eddie shook his head sadly; eyes lost to the memory before he shook himself free. “So I eat it for him.”
“Live… live chickens?” Cassidy whimpered.
“Hey, hey! It’s okay. It’s just he needs things like livers, brains, organs and such to sustain him. Without it, he’d have to consume mine, and I’d rather not go through that,” Eddie turned toward the stove and muttered softly, “Again.”
“Christ,” Cassidy groaned and thunked her head on the table. “When did I fall down the fucking rabbit hole?”
Eddie snickered, and a deeper chuckle rolled out with it.
“Don’t laugh at me, asshole! You’ve had time to get used to this! I can barely wrap my brain around my own problems let alone the whole shit ton of ass fuckery this is!”
Eddie returned with a plate piled with toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, and tater tots, and set it in front of her.
“Ketchup?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Cassidy sighed. “Is it in the fridge?”
“Where else would it be?”
Eddie scoffed and turned to get it, but Cassidy grabbed his wrist. “You wanted to know why those men were after me?” He frowned but nodded. “It’s because of this.”
Cassidy turned toward the fridge and released his wrist to hold her hand out. “Dispareo.” It vanished from existence, leaving everything within sitting on invisible shelves. Concentrating on the ketchup bottle, she crooked her fingers. “Ad me.” It zipped across the room and landed in her hand. She set it on the table and flicked her fingers at the fridge. “Se sisto.” It returned in all it’s dirty, dingy, magnet covered glory.
“Holy… fuck,” Eddie breathed.
She picked up a tater tot and popped it in her mouth, then looked up at Eddie and the floating head of Venom and smiled. “That’s right, Harry. I am a wizard.”

Trio of Towns Recipe Problems? PART 1
Okay, so, I got beef with Trio of Town’s recipe section. And it’s not just the lack of beef. XD;;
Though real quick, why DON’T we have the option to make our animals into meat? Look I know they’re cute and we love them, and you shouldn’t HAVE to, but there’s really no good logical reason why not. The game allows you to make fish dishes after all? Are fish not living creatures? Plus the game kills off your animals due to old age anyways, and it allows you to sell your animals at any time. So why not have a butcher in town? Again, no one has to use it if they don’t want. But for those who do, as long as nothing gross is shown, why not?
Anyways, besides the chicken and beef recipes I’m missing out on, here’s a few other issues I’ve noticed. I've tried my best not to comment on recipes I just don’t think sound good and stick to what I really believe is incorrect.
SALADS
Potato Salad - This is labeled as a Westown Recipe. However, I think this version of Potato Salad is one that Japanese/Chinese/Eastern people in general are more familiar with. This recipe calls for “Potato, cucumber, carrot and mayonnaise”, with the toppings being either “beans, pepper or radish”. Where I’m from, however, potato salad’s ingredient list is “potato, cucumber-pickles, eggs, and mayo”, with topping picks being “Salt/Pepper, Onions or Olives”. Perhaps there could be two potato salad recipes in the future, one from Tsuyukusa and one from Westown? Sharing and/or quarreling over different versions of recipes could actually be a plot point for future games, too.
Mashed Potatoes - Recipe is fine but needs more topping picks. Should add butter and cheese. Also maybe sour cream as a new topping/craft? Sour cream isn’t available in TOT but maybe you could make it in a future game? Milk in the fermenter logically sounds like it would make sour cream, right?
Milk Salad - Okay I PROMISE I won’t comment on recipes I just find weird for the most part but... Do people really do this??? Just, pour milk on vegetables like cereal...? XD I have to ask, which specific vegetable is usually used with this recipe? I just cannot fathom which veggie tastes good with milk...?
Coleslaw - Again, must be a different version of the recipe. Ingredient list here is “cabbage, radish, apple, honey, yogurt” with topping picks as “salt/pepper and mayo”. Where I’m from coleslaw is “Cabbage (a red and green cabbage variety would be nice too), carrots, yogurt/mayonnaise and lemon juice”, with the topping picks being “Salt/pepper, onions or celery”. Perhaps one recipe could be “Sweet Coleslaw” and the other one “Savory Coleslaw”?
Fruit Salad - I could perhaps be wrong about this one, but cabbage and spice seem like odd toppings for this sweet fruit salad...? Were these toppings mislabeled, or do people really add these toppings to fruit salad? I would say better toppings would be either honey or other types of extra fruit, like grapes, banana, strawberry or kiwi. OR, perhaps there could be different versions -- A Westown Fruit Salad, a Tsuyukusa Fruit Salad, and a Lulukoko Fruit Salad, each with signature fruits from their respective towns.
SOUPS
Spaghetti Soup - Again, maybe this is a different version of the recipe from another culture. I personally have never had spaghetti soup, I just eat spaghetti, but it sounded like it probably shouldn’t have pumpkin in it...? I looked up the recipe for Spaghetti Soup and it seems like most people have it as it sounds, as a soup version of tomato sauce spaghetti. Perhaps there could be a “Vegetarian” spaghetti soup option from Tsuyukusa with the pumpkin, and one that more closely resembles what most of us recognize as spaghetti from Westown?
Bouillon Soup -- Nothing wrong with this recipe per se, but if there were meat options in the future there could be a vegetarian version of bouillon and a meat one, with salt/pepper as toppings to make it better.
Tom Yum Goong - I believe this recipe should also include lemon/lime and possibly chilis and maybe some herbs? Adding lemongrass as a herb you can forage would make this really authentic.
Minestrone - This isn’t TOO big a bone to pick, it’s pretty similar, but maybe add flour as a topping since minestrone often has noodles in it too, and pepper.
Fish Chowder/Clam Chowder - If celery was a veggie you could grow in future games, these and a few other recipes could use some celery.
GRILLED/FRIED
Vegetable Stir Fry - Really why not just let people add whatever kind of veggies they like to this one, there’s so many ways people like to mix and fry veggies? But I’m thinking it should also call for carrot or broccoli at least, and maybe have beans, pepper or soy sauce as a topping pick too? OR, maybe like the Fruit Salad, there could be a different signature vegetable stir fry recipe for each town? The Tsuyukusa Stir Fry, the Westown Stir Fry, and the Lulukoko Stir Fry!
Pizza - A really lovely simple pizza recipe we got here, but again along with the veggie stir fry, there could be more options. If meat were options that could be it’s own thing. But even just going with the veggie toppings we have in the current game, you could also add spinach, bell pepper, or pineapple as extra toppings. Maybe have an extra Veggie Pizza and Fruit Pizza recipe in addition to the Classic Cheese Pizza, and Meat Pizza if that was a future option?
Omelet/Mini Omelet - Cheese as a topping? OMELET DU FROMAGE PLZ...
Baked Beans - Seems like a Tsuyukusa recipe? A Westown recipe for ‘Baked beans’ would call for beans, tomato/ketchup, sugar/honey, maybe garlic or mustard if those were options in future games, and if meat were also an option, ham or bacon for sure.
French Fries - If we can make tomatoes into ketchup later, well, duh.
Roasted Corn - Butter, Mayonnaise and maybe chili/spice as toppings.
POT DISHES
Cabbage Rolls/Stuffed Tomatoes - These bother me a little. WHAT is rolled into the cabbage? WHAT is stuffed into the tomatoes? We have NO IDEA. Please tell us! XD I’m thinking other veggies/mushrooms/rice/cheese makes most sense, maybe meat. Also there should maybe be a recipe for Stuffed Bell Peppers and/or Stuffed Mushrooms too?
Deep-FRIED Monkfish/Deep-FRIED Catfish/FRIED Shrimp/FRIED Tofu/FRIED Tofu Fritter/Deep-FRIED Fish Cakes - G...Guys... GUYS... “FRIED” WAS LITERALLY RIGHT IN THE NAME OF THE DISHES, COME OOOON... XD;;
Boiled Corn - Salt/Pepper and Butter as toppings.
Ahi Poke SALAD - Again... SALAD...? IDK, is it a pot dish despite the name...?
RICE DISHES
There’s actually nothing I can notice wrong with the rice section, seems pretty solid. Good job on this part, guys. Maybe just add a few extra curry-rice recipes?
NOODLES/BREAD
Bread - Mugwort and Sugar seem slightly odd for toppings? Maybe make a few new breads, like an Herb Bread so you can use mint/mugwort/whatever to make it fancier, and the sugar could go in a Sweet Bread recipe along with maybe honey/maple. For plain Bread, salt or butter as a topping makes more sense.
Corn Bread - Still needs milk and egg to the corn meal to make it corn bread? With butter or honey/maple as toppings? Corn meal alone is just... corn meal...
Vegetable Bread - If vegetables are stuffed into the bread instead of mixed into the batter as depicted in the picture, doesn’t that make it a sandwich? Maybe separate the Noodles and Bread section have a new sandwich section added to the Bread category if meat is added in a future game? Sandwiches could add several new recipe combinations.
Fruit Bread - There’s really quite a few different fruit bread recipes and I feel the game could expand this just a little/add a few varied pictures. Maybe an Apple-Cinnamon Bread, a Raisin Bread (this is already in the game but it’s in with the noodles, not the bread?) and a Berry Bread.
Crackers - Should also be with the breads and not the noodles. Maybe also an extra recipe for fancier Herb Crackers.
Spaghetti - Maybe I haven’t unlocked it yet? There’s a ‘Spaghetti Soup’ and a ‘Spaghetti Aglio e Olio”, which is made with chilis, but...? Is it unlocked later in the game or is there just no regular Spaghetti recipe...? *confused* ^^;
POST TOO LONG, CONTINUING THIS LABOR OF LOVE IN A PART 2...

Thanksgiving
It’s Thanksgiving here in Ketchikan (and everywhere else in the US) and the past few days have been an interesting study in island living. Tuesday Ladybug and I ran a few errands after her morning at the gymnastics club – they open it up to little ones one day a week and it’s a pretty awesome way to blow off some steam when the rains are hitting hard. Our first errand was to drop a package at the post office. Hot tip: if you’re ever in Ketchikan, and the line of one or two people at the post office right by the Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal seems interminable, you can head five miles north and go to the post office in Ward Cove. Ward Cove as a neighborhood is just a blip: if you’re driving fifty up Tongass Highway (not, by the way, an actual highway by most people’s standards) you’ll have to downshift slightly as you go around the bend, the cove to your left, with its Fed Ex outpost and handful of float planes. The gymnastics club is tucked in next door to Fed Ex, in a converted warehouse. They moved recently (though before we arrived) and there was some grumbling about the jump in price: a 10-punch card for Tot Gym is now $40, up from $25. I could see how this would feel like a big increase. On the other hand, I would encourage anyone who’s actually mad about this to go to any indoor play space in a big city in the lower 48; it will cost at least twice as much.
Anyway, if you continue north less than a quarter of a mile, you’ll see the Ward Cove post office on your right. Tucked into the same little shopping strip – can I call it that? I’m going to – is a combo gas station/liquor store/pizza place, a hair salon, and the Green Bean, one of the best coffee places on the island. They roast their own beans – a good reminder that we’re living in… well let’s call it the GreaterPacific Northwest. I doubt anyone in Seattle or Portland is looking to Ketchikan for our coffee culture, but it’s here and it’s real. It’s similar to how good coffee is omnipresent in Amsterdam – walk into any office or home there and one of the first exchanges you will be a part of is “Koffie?” “Ja, lekker.” I think the weather and the dark winters foster this attachment to warm deliciousness, which is fine by me. I’ve always been a fan of a hot drink on a cold day.
All that to say: you’ve just experienced Ward Cove. You could continue north and you’d never know that you missed a magical feature of the island. So instead, turn inland from Tongass Highway via Revilla Road (within a very short distance, you’ll be fully surrounded by Tongass National Forest), then turn onto the road with the brown campground signs and you’ll hit Ward Lake, with its forested loop. The first time Steve and I did this easy little hike, he told me he’d Vision-quested it: as in, when we were trying to escape Los Angeles like we were in an old Kurt Russell movie, he pictured what he wanted, and the Ward Lake loop was it. Dark and mossy, it’s the kind of path that desperately wants to grow over itself; but for all the pesky walkers, it would undoubtedly succeed. In the time of the WPA, folks up here erected several wood and stone shelters with fireplaces – after a walk or a fishing expedition, and even in the pouring rain, a person could have a pretty excellent picnic, looking out at the lake. The last time Flo and I were up there, someone had made a fire and left it burning; the little cabin beckoned us, and we sat by the fire and warmed up.
So that’s Ward Cove andWard Lake. But back to the post office. It was raining (I forgot to mention: it’s always raining now) and Ladybug whimpered about not wanting to get out of the car again. So I gave her an apple, I locked the doors, and I left her in the car. It’s worth noting that there have been incidents of arrests for leaving small children in parking lots in big cities and suburbs. It’s also worth noting that I wouldn’t have left her alone in the car even in our gatedcarportin Los Angeles. But if you could see this post office, you’d understand. There’s just no reason to imagine that a child wouldn’t be safe there. And of course if you’re reading this in a small town like Ketchikan, you’re probably wondering why I’m bothering to mention it at all – of course a five-year-old is okay on her own, in a parking lot, for three minutes, especially with the doors locked. What could possibly happen? It’s just such a shift for a kid raised in New York, who started raising her own kid in LA – places where anythingcould happen.
Errand number one: done. It was back to town and into Island Pharmacy to pick up a prescription. Island Pharmacy is one of three pharmacies in Ketchikan, and it’s the only one that’s independent (the other two are at Safeway and Walmart.) It’s also a single minute from our house. While we were in there, one of the women working behind the counter mentioned that she still needed to go shopping for Thanksgiving.
“Don’t,” said the older woman paying for her prescription.
“Uh oh,” I said. “Are the stores crazy?”
“Yes,” she said. “And there’s nothing on the shelves.”
I’m not sure I’ve mentioned this on the blog before, but it is possible to walk into a grocery store here and find that they’re completely out of, say, eggs. And I mean completely out. Not, like, you might have to buy brown instead of white, or the only ones they have are the $7 cartons where the chickens sleep on memory foam mattresses and only eat kale. (I’m usually somewhere in the middle: uncaged, ideally organic, but I don’t need the chickens to have been massaged on a daily basis.) There are simply no eggs, and any plans you may have had involving eggs will have to be put on hold. So the idea that the shelves were wiped clean was not a crazy one.
Flo got home early that day, so the three of us hightailed it to the grocery store. As we’d been warned, there were some gaping holes. No heavy cream. No egg nog. And, as a lady told me grumpily in the produce aisle, no canned sweet potatoes. We had a long talk about how many fresh sweet potatoes she’d have to use to make her casserole, which normally required three cans; this conversation felt so backwards that I wasn’t even sure I could be helpful, but I tried.
In the end, we got everything we needed. We’d already found a pasture-raised turkey (read: the kale-eating kind) a few weeks prior (two turkeys, in fact; we did a test run when our friend Charlotte came up – Flo made a full on Thanksgiving dinner for her birthday.) It’s Thanksgiving morning, the turkey is thawed out, I have some pumpkin and cranberry-related items to start making, and my parents will get here tonight. When people ask when they’re coming, I say either “Flight 67” or “the 5:00 ferry,” and everyone knows what I’m talking about. It’s like living in an extended episode of Wings.
Last year, our family was one of millions who drove east out of Los Angeles the day before Thanksgiving. We were headed to Castle Valley, Utah, to my sister-in-law and brother-in-law’s magical place (Flo and I got married there, in the shadow of Arches National Park.) It took us two hours to drive twenty miles; we pulled over and had dinner, after which things picked up a little bit. Flo showed me a picture of that same exodus a year later – lines of unmoving cars, brake lights illuminating the freeway. This year we’ll be driving a mile and a half to pick up my parents from the airport ferry.
I’m thankful for a lot of things today – for Ward Lake, and for the Ward Cove post office with its empty parking lot, save a small apple-eating girl. For Green Bean coffee, and the local pharmacy, and the fact that I can live without whipped cream on my pie (BUT JUST THIS ONCE.) For the people I’ve met here, and the people I haven’t met yet, but will. For the sunshine and long days we had when we moved here, and for the rain and the darkness we have now. For the two people I live with whose hearts are all wrapped up with mine, and the third little person who’ll be joining the party soon. And for all of you, wherever you are. Happy Thanksgiving from southeast Alaska. Please eat enough whipped cream for me.

11 Useful Items to Keep Hidden Away in Your Freezer

Frozen mixed berries | CLICKMANIS/Shutterstock
From cooking fat to freezer cake, these are the items that make cooking easier for Eater editors
For active home cooks or even those who generally dread the task, the freezer deserves credit for helping get dinner (or dessert) on the table. It’s a place that offers a wealth of shortcut meals and snacks, from exceptional frozen dumplings to nostalgic treats like tater tots. Frozen ingredients like chicken stock or marinara sauce can get a home cook most of the way to a finished meal. As long as people know the best way to store and defrost their freezer items, whether they’re cuts of meat or bagels, a freezer is undeniably an indispensable tool, during a pandemic and otherwise.
Here’s a roundup of the useful items Eater editors are most likely to keep hidden away in their freezers.
Cooking fat: Meat isn’t an everyday item in our house, so when we do cook with it, my partner and I like to save every last bit. That means saving the fat. Grease is one of those pesky residuals of cooking that’s harder to dispose of. It really shouldn’t go directly down the drain. Some people wait for it to cool in a container and then pour it in the garbage. However, I recommend saving that flavor. When you cook chicken, duck, bacon, or anything else particularly precious and tasty, save the drippings in a glass container and stick it in the freezer. Then use it in place of butter or oil in your cooking to impart more flavor. Duck fat is particularly tasty for cooking fried eggs at breakfast time. —Brenna Houck, Eater Detroit editor
Ice cube tray and ice cubes: The most important items in my freezer are my two ice cube trays and the ice they hold. Since shelter-in-place has coincided with my pregnancy, I’m drinking a lot of non-alcoholic beverages, each of which is greatly improved by being even colder. I make cheater iced almond milk lattes by stirring drip coffee with ice and then adding more ice and almond milk. I cool down cups of herbal tea I discover I’ve left on the counter and enjoy iced tea. I drink so much more tap water when I remember to put ice cubes in it. The trick: Refill your tray with water every time you take cubes from it. Just make it part of your routine and it’s never empty. —Hillary Dixler Canavan, restaurant editor
Frozen fruit: My biggest freezer staple is frozen fruit, mostly because I love a good smoothie. Great for breakfast or anytime you feel like you need a Vitamin C boost, the secret to a thick, filling smoothie is to use a fresh banana and frozen fruit without adding ice. I just buy the bags frozen from my local grocery store (even tropical fruits like pitaya are now pretty easy to find), but this is also a great way to store those final few strawberries before they go bad. Other uses of fruit in your freezer: cocktail ingredients, drink garnishes, a snack (especially frozen mango). —Erin Russell, Eater Austin associate editor
Dino nuggets: Why eat boring chicken nuggets when you can eat chicken nuggets shaped like dinosaurs? It may be childish, but I will never stop getting a kick out of dino nuggets. It’s an easy lunch on a hectic day; just toss them in the toaster oven. Flip once. I guess you could make a side salad if you’re feeling fancy. But the only required side, as far as I’m concerned, is a dipping sauce — ideally barbecue sauce from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que because (a) it’s good and (b) obviously dino nuggets go best with Dino sauce. —Rachel Leah Blumenthal, Eater Boston editor
Homemade gumbo: Gumbo is one of my favorite meals to make at home, but let’s be real; it’s a project, a cooking task that’s going to clock in at a couple hours before it’s done. Luckily, since there are only two of us at home, making gumbo always means gumbo leftovers, and I don’t think there’s a more satisfying freezer meal for me than a bowl of gumbo that I simply pulled out of the freezer (stored in a quart container) to defrost the night before in the fridge, and reheated for dinner that evening. Gumbo doesn’t really deteriorate significantly in the freezer; all you have to do is throw some rice in the rice cooker, and you have an easy weeknight dinner that totally makes up for all the effort you initially put into making a roux, simmering your ingredients, and just having patience for the gumbo to finish the first time around. —Missy Frederick, cities director
Frozen dinners from mom: Being far away from my family is hard, especially now that I don’t really know when I can safely go back home to New York. Thankfully, I usually have deep-frozen containers of my mother’s home-cooking in my freezer, from my last visit home. Whenever I fly home, my mother usually asks me what foods I want to bring back (my favorites: shrimp and potol, a Bengali pointed gourd; chicken with squash), along with biryani. My mom batch-cooks everything and my dad portions out the food into 16-ounce deli containers, labels each one, and carefully packs everything into a disposable cooler with ice packs, ready to be placed in my overstuffed suitcase. This way, I can hold onto tastes of home even though it’s 1,700+ miles away. —Nadia Chaudhury, Eater Austin editor
Banana ice cream: Forget cookies and cream or chocolate chip cookie dough. Banana is the best ice cream flavor, and I make sure to keep a half-gallon in my freezer at all times. Living in Newark, I’m lucky to be within walking distance of the scoop shop that makes it best: Nasto’s. I have three scoops after dinner every night, always with a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and it’s pure bliss. I understand that ice cream isn’t the most exciting thing in a freezer compared to frozen dumplings or mochi, but the flavor takes me back to sitting on my late grandmother’s balcony in Ankara, where we would split a bowl of fruit — mostly bananas — together. —Esra Erol, senior social media manager
Freezer cake: I don’t remember what life was like before I discovered Freezer Cake. I don’t care to look back on that era. There’s something special about knowing a slice of banana upside-down cake or a thick slab of banana bread is waiting there, whispering my name gently from the back corner of the freezer. In these not-very-sweet times, being able to eat a slice of cake without ever cracking an egg or dirtying a bowl feels like a victory. All you need to do is let whatever cake you’ve so wisely frozen defrost slowly on the counter. Because sometimes turning on the oven is just too much work. —Elazar Sontag, staff writer
Stock: The one thing I always try to have in my freezer is stock. Usually it’s chicken stock, either made from the carcass of a roast chicken or from a big pile of chicken wings I dumped in my Instant Pot, because so many recipes call for it, whether a little bit to help finish a sauce or several cups to make a soup or stew. Homemade stock tastes noticeably better, and since it’s easy to keep in the freezer, making up a big batch doesn’t risk any going to waste. To freeze stock, I measure it out into plastic baggies in rough one or two cup amounts, using a ladle with a half-cup measure on it, and then lie them flat in the freezer one on top of the other, so when they harden, they’re easy to stack. When I need to defrost, I zap a frozen bag for 30 seconds or a minute in the microwave and break off roughly as much as I need, or drop the whole cup or two into the pot. I have endured the shame of throwing out all sorts of things from my freezer, but I have never, ever wasted stock. —Meghan McCarron, special correspondent
Homemade pesto: My frozen secret weapon is an ice cube tray full of homemade pesto. Pesto sauce, to me, is a special thing. Basil is a precious, flavorful commodity that seems expensive if you don’t have a farmers market nearby, and it doesn’t stay for very long either. Pine nuts are also quite pricey, so when I do make a big batch from scratch, I make sure to make it last. Pesto is so flavorful that you don’t need to use a lot for any single dish. That’s where the ice cube tray comes in. Filling a tray with pesto and freezing it into cubes is a trick I learned long ago when Pinterest was new on the scene and basically church for those interested in recipe ideas and hacks. Popping out one or two cubes of pesto as needed is a great way to make use of the sauce you may have made months ago when basil was in season, without having to defrost an entire Tupperware. It’s such an easy and fast way to add flavor to a quick pasta dish, some beans, a sandwich of any kind, and even to make into a vinaigrette for a salad on the fly. —Terri Ciccone, audience development manager
Salted caramel ice cream: If it’s freezer junk food you seek, I present Lotus Biscoff Salted Caramel Ice Cream, something I started hoarding during the pandemic. I swear it’s the softest ice cream I’ve ever found. The instructions even recommend leaving it out for five minutes to soften before you dig in. There is a straight Biscoff cookie version, but I like the salted caramel mixed in. I buy it at Target, and do a search before I venture out to make sure it’s in stock. —Susan Stapleton, Eater Vegas editor
Honorable mentions: Fresh herbs frozen in ice cube trays, bags of pre-peeled garlic, brownies, Eggo waffles, tortellini, peas, pierogis, homemade marinara sauce, cooked beans, rice cakes for stir fries, cookie dough.

8 Creative Ways to Upcycle Your Baby’s Nursery Items
markos86/iStock
There’s no sugarcoating it: Having a baby is an expensive venture. You’ll be shelling out for an entirely new wardrobe that won’t fit the tyke within months, as well as many furnishings and no end of toys, burp cloths, and blankets. So as your tot ages out of each purchase, you might wonder how you can extend the life of all of those purchases—and get a bigger bang for your baby buck(s).
We’re here to report that upcycling your baby’s old things is a fun and easy way to add utility and beauty to your home’s decor. Repurposing kids’ gear is not only a green method for handling these castoffs, but in some cases you can create a keepsake to give or admire.
Here are some ways to transform your baby’s sweet things into decorative pieces, useful storage, and more.
1. Stuff a toy
Your tot’s favorite outfit can live again as a sweet bear
Etsy.com
Those adorable onesies can be remade as a toy.
“You can take on the project as a DIY gift for your child, or mail out the clothing and get a personalized piece created,” says Katie McCann, a home organizer with Haven.
You can also make stuffed animals out of kids’ old outfits. (Check out the plush toys made from these items on Etsy, starting at $40.)
2. Create a memory board
A bedspring-as-memory board holds to-do’s, pictures, and keepsakes
Okio B Designs
A crib or toddler bedspring can be transformed with just a bit of paint.
Jeanine Boiko, a real estate agent and blogger at Okio B Designs, decorated her old bedsprings with photos and memorabilia.
“You can add magnet backing with hot glue to any piece you want to hang up, or use clothespins to attach your pictures,” she says.
3. Corral tiny items
Spice, spice baby
GazingIn.com
Clean up baby food jars with Goo Gone, and then run them through the dishwasher before using these vessels in your crafts room to hold crayons. Or decant spices into old jars and paint the tops with chalkboard paint for easy labeling, suggests Jamie Novak, an organizing pro and author of “Keep This Toss That.”
These jars also come in handy on a workbench (to hold nails, screws) and home office (to hold pushpins, paper clips).
4. Design magnets and drawer pulls
Soldier figures, dinosaurs, and Lego bricks can become drawer pulls and fridge magnets.
HGTV
Attach small magnets to the back of chunky blocks and colorful figurines for easy paper holders on metal appliances. And with a drill, hanger bolt, washers, and nuts, you can transform small toys into drawer pulls for a kid’s dresser or bedside table.
5. Craft a shadow box
Photo by Design Inside – Chicago
Sweet baby shoes, her first knitted cap, and other mementos can be safely stored and displayed in a shadow box on the wall of an older kid’s room. Other ideas for these boxes include birthday photos, goodie bag favors, medals from tournaments, playbills from concerts, and pressed dried flowers, says McCann.
6. Make seasonal decor
These spring nests are perfect for Easter.
Okio B Designs
Sure, baby food jars are ideal candleholders, but you can ramp up the “wow” factor by designing votives for every season.
Boiko loves clear label paper from Amazon. “All you do is print the image you want onto the paper, cut to size, and stick it on the jar,” she says.
To make tiny nests for a spring display, Boiko filled jars with faux moss from a dollar store and topped them with tiny plastic eggs.
7. Transform a crib
Crib slats + toy box = comfy bench
MyRepurposedLife.com
A wooden toy box can easily become bench storage for your front hallway or mudroom—just top it with a pad for comfy seating, says Novak.
Or make over a box using crib sides as the back of your bench, as done by MyRepurposedLife (see above). You can use essentially every piece of the crib, as some headboards can double as a garden trellis.
8. Stitch a quilt
Baby dresses get new life as a cozy quilt.
Etsy.com
Can’t part with her smocked summer dresses? Have a wall hanging or throw blanket made (Etsy, starting at $25) or craft pillows from baby blankets with fabric glue.
“And ceremonial pieces, like a christening gown, can be remade into a tooth fairy pouch or a ring bearer’s pillow for a wedding someday,” says Novak.

It is 2022! Another year. And it was a good day.
It was also incredibly grey and then incredibly foggy?? It was like being inside of a cloud here until like an hour ago. But it was neat to see, even if it was scary driving in it.
Last night was great. Both me and Jess were struggling to stay up. So I set an alarm for 1150 and would wake Jess up. I didn't fall asleep. I instead hung a mirror and made new outfits and poked around on the internet. I did lay in bed but I wouldn't let myself under the covers so I could keep myself up. James was playing games with friends. And then at 1150 we all put shoes on. I put a bowtie on sweetP. And James went in the hall.
We watched a countdown and it was just really cute. James came in and we kissed and then they explained everything they chose in the basket (the basket itself was a wedding gift that their parents received when they got married) and then they proposed again. Because they are a sweetie. The ring is such an interesting shape, Im going to run out of fingers to wear rings though!! Love them so much.
Me and Jess went to sleep pretty quick after that though. We were excited but exhausted. And it was pretty good sleep. I slept a little later, so did everyone else though. I got up at 930 and joined Jess and James in the living room. James would go record their podcast and me and Jess made breakfast. We mixed eggs with pesto and cheese and made very fancy scrambled eggs and had it with the leftover sweet potato tots. It was such a nice breakfast.
We were talking about projects we wanted to start this year an Jess had talked about doing a temperature blanket and I loved that idea. I want to actually make a blanket on my loom. So we decided to go to Joanns and get all the yarn we would need. I am excited to have a project that is just a little a day. Its not as intense as my printing project and I am just very jazzed.
So we headed out into the world (after checking that the store was open) and it was a nice drive out, it was starting to get foggy. But it wasn't bad yet. And it was so fun getting yarn. She went for a thinner yarn, while I went with a chunky fluffy yarn. Its actually really close to the sweater I made last year. We also looked at the Christmas stuff and I got a couple tiny house ornaments. She got fluffy socks.
And then it was time to go home.
Jess would head out after we got back. I helped her bring things down and then she was off. I was sad to see her go. The fog was getting really bad and I was worried about her getting back but she would be okay.
I wold start working on my blanket. I decided to do a line of black to show the change of month. And so I did that and thought it was going well but I apparently forgot how to use my loom because I made it so tight I couldn't get it to move and I broke the thread twice. So I had to take the whole thing apart and start over. It went much better the second time. So one day down, many more to go. I really hope I stick with it and finish it. Thankfully even if I miss a day I can just look what the weather was and go back and catch up.
While I was working on that James was in the other room on a video call with my dad. Teaching him how to set up his new switch. It was honestly so sweet. James has so much patience and dad was trying so hard to understand and besides some misunderstandings it seemed to go well and dad now has the baseball game James showed him. I really hope they find time to play together. Its so cute.
I would have to go to work at 5. So for the last 2 hours I ate a lovely lunch James made for me and watched videos and enjoyed being on the couch.
But soon it was time to go. Driving was a little scary in the dense fog. But I drove through the city and it was all fine. And tonight was great.
There were some issues. The bride was late, the father was missing, it was a whole thing. But I ended up having some great conversations and the people were so lovely. While the ceremony was happening I chatted with Kelly and I made a comment about how much I love doing the events. And how I get offended when someone else gets them before I do and she was like. You could be my person! And so shes going to talk to Jessica about it and I may be the person who is always the events person so I am really pumped about that.
And really the while party was great. The first half hour of the cocktail hour I couldn't get anyone to come back but once they did they were all so great. My throat started hurting from talking so much. The bride and groom even came back to take pictures and I got to show them the machine shop and they were just so cute and sweet. It was a lovely night.
I was there a little later because everything started late, but that was okay. I was just a little tired and hungry. I had to go find Kelly but once I did I made sure she didn't need me for anything and then I headed out.
Driving home was a little scary. I took the highway and the light from the streetlamps below was lighting up all the fog and it was so bright?? It was wild. But I made it home and James had the oven heating up to make me leftover pizza.
We hung out in the kitchen. And after eating I took a great shower. MY hair needed to be washed and I feel so much better now. But as I finish writing this I am very very tired.
I am looking forward to a good day tomorrow. I hope you are all taking care of yourselves. Goodnight my friends!!

Vegan Options at the Denver International Airport
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Please see my Privacy Policy for more details.
Because of its hub status and snowy location, I have spent many, many hours at the Denver Airport.
Luckily, as far as airports go, it’s not a bad one for the vegan traveler. In addition to several stores where a person can amuse herself during an unexpected layover, there are also many vegan options for times when one’s travel rations have run out.
(Need ideas for travel food? Check out these vegan tips for taking food on a plane.)
Here’s a list of your vegan options and where you can find them at the Denver Airport. (As always, check with your server about the ingredients when you order since menus change.)
Pro tip:
Remember, the A, B, and C gates can all be quickly accessed by way of the tram at the lower level of the Denver Airport. If you have the time, go exploring.
Auntie Anne’s – C Gates, Near gate C26
As long as you ask for the pretzels to be made without butter, these pretzels can be prepared vegan:
Original
Cinnamon Sugar
Sweet Almond
Garlic
Jalapeño
Raisin
Bee Fruity & Nutty – B gates
This kiosk offers a variety of dried fruits and nuts.
Ben & Jerry’s – A gates, Center core
Vegan flavor PB & Cookie is available at all scoop shops. It has an almond milk base, as well as swirls of peanut butter, and chunks of sandwich cookie.
To read my full review of Ben & Jerry’s PB & Cookie, check out this post on Ben and Jerry’s vegan.
Cantina Grill – B Gates Mezzanine & Jeppesen Terminal, East Side Level 6
Cantina Grill has three different kinds of salsa, a vegetarian taco, burrito, and taco salad, which are vegan without the addition of cheese or sour cream. Their burritos can also be ordered as a bowl.
The black and pinto beans are made without lard. The rice is made with water, not animal-based broth. They also offer tofu sofritos, which are similar to the tofu sofritas at Chipotle.
(Read about the Chipotle sofritas in my post on vegan fast food.)
Cantina Grill has both a to-go area and a restaurant-style area, where food can be ordered at the table instead.
Einstein Bros. Bagels – C Gates Center Core, Jeppesen Terminal Eastside
Many of the bagels at this chain are vegan. (Obviously the Honey Whole Wheat is out and any that have cheese. The pumpernickel & chocolate chip are also not vegan.)
You can see their nutritional information here. (If it has cholesterol, of course, it’s not vegan since there’s no cholesterol in plant foods.)
Add hummus and veggies, and it’s a filling sandwich for on the go. Einstein Bagels recently added Daiya dairy-free cream cheese to their spread options as well!
Etai’s Bakery Cafe – B gates, Near gate B23
While the rest of the menu doesn’t look vegan-friendly, they do offer a vegan chocolate cake.
Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli – B Gates, Near B87
Three kinds of smoothies at this location appear to be vegan. Double check before ordering that nothing else is added to the drink.
Triple berry: Strawberries, blueberries, banana, apple juice
Summer splash: Strawberries peaches, banana, apple juice
Blueberry monster: Blueberries, banana, apple juice
Jamba Juice – B Gates Mezzanine
For a vegan option, get one of the All Fruit Smoothies or Fruit & Veggie Smoothies.
Lounge 5280 Wine Bar – B Gates Mezzanine
Possible vegan options at Lounge 5280 Wine bar include:
Marinated mixed Greek olives
Roasted almonds
Rosemary bread with olive oil & balsamic glaze
Edamame-mint hummus
House salad
Double check with your server before ordering.
Mesa Verde Bar & Grill – A gates Mezzanine
There appear to be several vegan options at Mesa Verde. However, I haven’t ordered there. So be sure to double check with your server before ordering.
Possible vegan options include:
Chips & guacamole
Salsa
Portobello mushroom street tacos (with no cheese)
Veggie burrito (with no cheese)
Fresh fruit
Modern Market – B gates, Center core & C gates, Near C28
Modern Market is a Colorado chain focused on natural foods. Almost all of their salads can be made vegan with a few tweaks (i.e. by substituting tofu and/or using avocado instead of cheese.)
Most of their salad dressings, except for the creamy dressings, are vegan, because they use agave syrup instead of honey.
They always have at least one vegan soup. A lot of their sandwiches can be made vegan by substituting tofu.
Current vegan options at Modern Market include:
Superfood salad with spinach/kale blend, quinoa pilaf, grape, carrot, almond, champagne vinaigrette. This usually comes with feta, so ask that it be omitted.
Wintergreen salad with spinach, apple, roasted potato, date, walnut, agave herb vinaigrette. This usually comes with goat cheese, so ask that it be omitted.
Curry split pea soup
Southwestern tofu scramble with avocado and potatoes. This usually comes with pepper jack cheese, so request that it be omitted.
They have steel cut oats on the menu that appear to be vegan; however, they aren’t marked vegan. So ask the staff to clarify.
You can read all about my last visit to one of their other locations by clicking on this Modmarket review.
New Belgium Hub – B gates, Near gate B60
New Belgium has a couple of items that appear to be vegan. However, I haven’t had a chance to personally order from there. So double check with your server before ordering.
Possible vegan options include:
Stuffed roasted portobello mushroom
Heart healthy spinach & kale salad (Request that they omit the cheese)
French fries
Pour La France – B gates, Center core
Pour La France offers soy and almond milk for their coffee beverages.
Que Bueno – B Gates, Near B52
Que Bueno offers burritos, chips, salsa, and guacamole.
I had a vegetable burrito with black beans (request no cheese) and a side of chips & guacamole during my last visit. The vegetables had a good amount of spice on them, making the burrito less bland than some other airport options. It’s also very big, making it large enough for two people to share.
For more heat, ask for a container of sliced jalapeños to go.
Root Down – C Gates
This Denver-area restaurant focused on seasonal and local fare now has an airport location at the top of the escalators from the tram. If you’re looking for a nice, sit-down vegan meal at the Denver airport, this is it.
On the menu, there is a “V” next to the items that can be prepared vegan by request. Be sure to tell your server that you’re vegan.
The veganizable options include:
Sweet potato fries (with no yogurt)
Pozole
House salad
Roasted beets (with no goat cheese)
Harissa roasted carrot salad (with no feta)
Edamame hummus
Shoyu ramen (with no egg)
Veggie burger
Country fried tofu bento box
Tofu scramble (until noon)
On my most recent visit, I ordered the country fried tofu bento box, which came with coconut wild rice, edamame, mushrooms, and a salad. It is vegan by default.
This country fried tofu bento is $22. I was a little disappointed they didn’t fill all of the areas of the bento box for that price point.
Glasses of wine start at $18. So be prepared that dinner for one with wine plus tax and tip can easily veer towards $50.
The bento box was tasty, though, and filling.
I asked about their veggie burger. They make it in house. The server said that it’s completely vegetable-based, no beans or soy.
However, they do use breadcrumbs for binding. So it’s not gluten-free.
If you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, they also have a to-go area that includes a free standing water station.
Possible vegan options include:
Hummus bento box
Chia pudding
Roasted beet salad (without cheese)
Click here for a full review of the DIA location of Root Down.
Starbucks Coffee – B Gates, Near B83 & B90
In addition to specialty coffees with soy, coconut, and almond milk, one can typically find oatmeal, bagels with avocado spread, a variety of nuts, dried fruit, and potato chips for sale.
Read more about Starbucks vegan options in this post about vegan fast food.
Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs – B gates, Near B24
Lots of their veggie dogs and burgers can be prepared vegan at Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs, as well as french fries, green beans, and sweet potato tots.
I haven’t eaten their personally, but word on the street is that it’s an affordable option, where you basically build your own dog. Plus, they really load up the veggie dogs with vegetables.
See pictures from their standalone location on That Was Vegan?
Tamales by La Casita – C Gates, Center Core
This Mexican restaurant has vegan options, including a breakfast burrito. (Hold the cheese and egg, add beans.)
TCBY Frozen Yogurt – C Gates, Center Core
This fro-yo stand now offers vanilla almond milk frozen yogurt. (Thanks to Leslie for letting me know!)
Timberline Steaks & Grille – C Gates, Center core
They offer a hummus plate & house salad that appear to be vegan. Ask your server before ordering.
Vino Volo – A Gates, Near A49
They have a few options that appear to be vegan-friendly including:
Cured olives
Marcona almonds
Kale & blueberry salad
Double check with your server before ordering.
Wetzel’s Pretzels – B gates, Near B23
As long as you order them without butter, the Wetzel bits & original pretzel are vegan.
Wolfgang Puck Express – B Mezzanine
Wolfgang Puck Express offers a variety of salads with mixed greens and spinach that can be made vegan by omitting the animal products. For easier ordering, sit at the bar and chat with the servers about mixing and matching your salad ingredients.
They also have a changing soup of the day, which may or may not be vegan.
Unfortunately, a cheeseless pizza at Wolfgang Puck Express is not vegan, because the crust is made with honey.
One more note about vegan Denver Airport options:
Lots of the stores with magazines, books, and snacks also have vegan options like dried fruit, nuts, and chips. Keep them in mind for a last minute, grab and go option.
For more vegan options at airports, check out my posts on LAX airport food, Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and the Minneapolis St. Paul Airport.

Detained ; Peter Maximoff x Reader
Title: Detained
Words: 2,303
Fandom: Marvel (X-Men)
Pairing: Pietro Maximoff x Reader (Fox Version so, Peter)
Summary: Consuming of food inside the girls bathroom during class hours with a silver haired boy may lead to detention.
Warning/s: A swear word or two?? And slightly bad fluff (honestly not even fluff??)
Legend: Y/N - Your Name
++++++++++
You sat down on a chair far away the silver haired boy and began to write a five hundred word essay about the book Don Quixote of Miguel de Cervantes. You had to do something for the next hour to not allow the boredom seep into your system. Plus, this homework was due tomorrow, at least get it done so when this unnecessary torture was over, you could go straight to bed at home and rest. And maybe pretend this day didn’t go bad as it was.
The sight of students rushing to go home and going to their respective practices were displayed through the glass windows on the left side of the room you were detained in.
It was only you and Peter today in the detention room.
Correction: It was only you and Peter being detained today.
Mrs. Marble was the other person in the room. She was supposed to look after the both of you but she somehow managed to fall asleep while reading a trashy magazine.
God, you had to endure an extra hour in school because of Pietro- sorry, he preferred Peter-Maximoff. You hardly even knew that guy besides the fact he has a peculiar vibe going on around him- silver hair, alabaster skin, leather jacket that was silver, headphones around his neck, some wicked pair of silver shoes… And that he can get handsy on somethings. No, not in that kinky manner (but who knows how kinky can this dude go?) but in the sense of kleptomania.
Your head turned around to sneak a peak of him. He sat on the far side corner of the room in his black shirt that was overlaid with his jacket, his seemingly unnatural hair colour covered by a kids party hat.
He brought out a pack of Twinkies and some cafeteria stolen goods (a box of red velvet cake, tater tots, pizza, mac and cheese, some sloppy joe).
Is this dude nuts? You both got this punishment because of his love to get things that weren’t his and he’s going to eat them here?
You mentally applaud him. It took guts to do that crap he’s doing and he brought irony to this situation you guys were in. It puzzled your mind though on how he managed to get the food… Weren’t they confiscated from him?
He must’ve felt your gaze on him. Peter looked up from his act of opening the package of Twinkies. He gave you a shiteating grin and waved, Twinkie still in hand and the box of pizza on his desk. You quickly looked away- not before turning your eyes into slits that made you look weird but it was the only menacing looking you could muster -and busied yourself with the paper in front of you. A blush started to creep on your cheeks but you mentally willed yourself to let it fade because despite of him being cute with his rainbow party hat and grin, he still gave you the first detention of your life.
Soon enough you could smell the scent of pizza and Twinkie wafting. The pen left ink as it moved on the paper just like the smell of pizza was seducing your stomach to eat itself inside out because of its mouthwatering aroma.
You prayed to the heavens you wouldn’t go hungry because you told yourself earlier to not talk to Peter. As aforementioned, the both of you were here because of those sexy stolen food.
During fourth period World Literature earlier this day, you had gotten out of class to head to the bathroom for a time kill. Literature wasn't that terrible but your teacher’s voice was monotone and sleep inducing, you asked for permission to head out to the comfort room.
"You look like a zombie,“ a voice had broken the silence that blanketed the empty halls.
The voice belonged to a mischievous looking teenager, leaning against the cream coloured wall in the middle of the doors to the bathrooms.
Your siblings had been teasing you that you look like trash but a zombie? Did this unknown dude have to put it out there that there were unflattering black under your eyes?
You ignored him and moved closer to the bathroom that was labeled for females. A pale arm suddenly blocked your way.
“Aw, you’re gonna ignore me, princess? You seriously are a zombie. Not even acknowledging my presence.”
The princess comment went completely ignored, you calmly replied to him with your own question, “Is your presence even needed to be acknowledged?”
His pink lips had formed a smirk before mumbling something fast that you could not decipher.
’Whatever, willowy dude. Your thoughts aren’t worth a penny.’ You had thought at that moment. You pushed him away to enter the comfort room.
The door swung open as you turned the knob. You stepped inside, hoping the guy would bugger off.
No such luck because the guy had slipped inside as the door started to swing close, in a world record breaking time.
“But how…?” You started to question as he unexpectedly had food along with him.
“Oh, sush. Count your blessings, princess,” he waved his arm around like he was swatting a fly. There was a lot of food with him including a cake that said “Happy Birthday, Wilson!” which was the principal’s name. The food was suddenly placed all over the counter.
“This is the girl’s bathroom…” you lamely had said to him.
"So? I have goggles and my hair’s silver?“ He retorted and calmly produced a knife and sliced the cake. Has it been mentioned earlier? You must have forgotten. Peter had goggles with him and he claims he has it with him at all times.
“Right… Water is wet.” You nodded at him, staring as he cut the cake in a quick, even hand gestures.
“Bingo, correct-o, princess” he replied after licking some icing that got on his hand. The knife he had with him was gone in thin air. You tried looking for the knife nonchalantly but failed. Shock and curiosity was written all over you face. Peter noticed it but only chuckled at you then swiftly took the tool he placed on the school’s kitchen how many milliseconds ago.
A slice of cake was on left hand and the knife was on his right hand. You looked at him astonished but quickly shook your head.
“I am hallucinating. God.” You convinced yourself. Like, this dude had silver hair? Isn’t that a large neon warning sign for you by now? Maybe he made you sniff some drugs that kidnappers use to put the victim out of cautiousness or maybe, ecstasy? You haven’t eaten anything from his array of goodies.
“This is wonderland alright, princess.” He smirked at you. A black baseball cap was adorning his head at that time instead of a kid’s party hat. Despite that your cheeks was tinted pink you managed to spit out, “Stop calling me that,” to the interesting guy in front of you.
“Princess?” He asked you.
“Yeah, jerk. And get out of here. We might get into trouble.” The time kill you intended was short and brief not a long one but it doesn’t matter. You were sick of monotonous voices and pinching yourself to wake up. Was this skipping classes? You had the pass, though. You technically weren’t cutting classes.
“Why would like another nickname?”
You still were contemplating on whether or not this comfort room lounging past time was considered to be violating school rules when he continued talking, “Hm, honey? No, what about sugar? Cupcake?”
“Nah… sweetcheeks?” he paused and then laughed so hard he look like a maniac because you know… knife on his right hand and all.
“Sweetcheeks reminds me of buttcheeks and assholes.” He continued to laugh. This got your attention and honestly made you worry about this boy who confirmed that he was quite odd and frankly, you found out you didn’t mind because it was kind of a fresh air.
“What about eggs?” You deadpanned and then mentioned to him that he was going to a route of food related nicknames and down the rabbit hole.
“Oohhh! You could be Alice; I’ll be the Mad Hatter.” He grinned at you. The silver haired boy took a bite of the birthday cake which you are now sure that belonged to the principal.
He offered you the bitten cake and out of your “lacking judgment”, you took it and easily munched on the chocolate-y goodness. The principal may be bitter about some things all the time but his taste in cake sure was sweet.
"Pietro,” he introduced himself to you as a second (third?) bite was executed to the chocolate cake.
“Well… Actually don’t call me that. Call me Peter, or Pete,”
A hand was outstretched to you… A pale right hand minus the knife. Once again, you scanned the room on where the hell could the knife be but you simply let the notion of checking every stall go for the principal’s chocolate cake was so. good.
You swallowed the cake and replied with, “Y/N.”
You extended your left hand to him which was mildly covered with frosting as that was the hand with the cake earlier. The cake now took residence to your right hand.
Peter shook your frosting covered hand after commenting loudly, “The zombie has a name!” and gave a firm shake.
“I’m actually pretty disappointed that you aren’t Alice, though.”
"Scramble now, Peter. We’re gonna get caught soon because of your boisterous voice.“
He faced you with a lazy grin. "My voice? Boisterous? Get real,” he said really loudly like megaphone was built in his voice box.
"You took my slice of cake. Show some gratitude, Alice.“
A poker face was thrown to his way when he those words had escaped his lips.
"Peter, get out. Seriously. Gratitude my ass, we’re gonna be in trouble because of you.”
You had a little quarrel before the Principal, Mr. Wilson the birthday boy, caught the two of you. A stern glare was sent your way when he opened the bathroom door.
Your face had chocolate frosting in it despite the fact the food magically disappeared. You were pretty sure Principal Wilson had now the idea where his missing food had gone. But you so were not going to let this one drop; you were going to ask Peter about the disappearing trick he keeps on pulling.
“Ahh, happy birthday?” Peter had exclaimed and lamely threw his hands in the air.
Well, you guess it wasn’t entirely Peter’s fault but whatever.
You were already tired of writing the essay. The clock behind the sleeping figure of the detention moderator read 3:45 PM.
It only has been fifteen fucking minutes? Fifteen minutes passed by and the only thing you wrote on the leaf of paper was your name, date, and the title of your essay, Knighthood: Don Quixote’s Dying Goal, which was pretty dumb but meh.
You were grateful the principal gave you a short detention, though.
Paper balls flew across the room hitting your neck. Unless it was a spiritual entity, you were pretty sure it was Peter doing this.
Maybe Peter was a spiritual entity! How else could you explain the weird vanishing things?
He threw more little crumple wads of paper. You didn’t mind him and stared at your essay.
What would you write about Don Quixote? Should you write if who was fooled, Don Quixote or the people who jokingly knighted him?
You dumbly stared at your paper, letting your hand draw scribbles on the sheet of the intermediate pad.
This was getting boring. It was only eighteen minutes to your punishment and it was becoming tiring.
"You know,“ Peter’s loud raspy voice announced. "If I had to choose to spend an entire day with you and stung by five hundred bees forty eight times to death…”
You looked at him, waiting for him to finish his sentence.
"I’d choose spending time with you although you’re a boring zombie. Bees scare the living shit of me.“ He shivered at the thought of getting stung by multiple bees, multiple times.
You laughed at Peter and his confession.
"Hey, don’t be mean.” He fake pouted.
"Don’t worry, if I had to spend an entire day with you and cursed numerous times by Lord Voldemort…“
Peter looked expectantly at you with his pouted lips.
He looked absolutely ridiculous with a party hat on and those pouted lips… Just like a kid. Well, he seemed to be childish.
"I’d pick being hexed by Voldemort because hashtag goals, man!” You said a little louder than you meant. Mrs. Marble moved in her seat, still asleep, though.
"What? Ugh, Y/N, you are so mean.“
You only gave him an imaginary tip of your hat.
"If I had to choose to spend an entire day with you and drown in the River Styx, I’d pick the latter.” He stuck out his tongue at you.
"That’s unfair! I wanna come along!“ you exclaimed at his selfishness.
"But you’re mean,” he said in a kiddie manner. “Also, I would give you my party hat but like I said you’re mean so you have to deal with tipping imaginary hats!”
You glanced at the white clock that hung above.
3:52 PM.
’The remaining thirty eight minutes would pass by quickly.’ You thought as you turned your whole body around to face him without breaking your neck and preparing yourself for thirty eight minutes of food and childish banter in the detention room. Plus, you still have to ask him if he was a wizard or some sorts because how he was so fast or made things go away into thin air?
This was going to be one of hell of a party in the detention room.

Hey all.
It’s that time of year again, where everyone scrambles to squeeze every last bit of sentimentality out of an otherwise cosmically insignificant completion of the terrestrial rotation cycle. Still, in my thirst for attention and loneliness, I figured I’d be remiss were I not to join in on the festivities myself, especially considering my recent participation in the very same thing on another account. So, in the spirit of celebrating the constant rotation of our planet around the sun, here’s a list of people whose presence I tolerate more than others’ on this website, organized alphabetically for your convenience!
@captivatinginnocence - It seems fitting that you’re the first on the list, since you were the first person I talked to about RPing, the person who inspired me to make this blog, and the one who continues to motivate me to this day with her dedication and fascinatingly accurate portrayal of Mabel, as well as consistently entertaining and intriguing conversations OOC. I owe so, so much to you, Diana, and can confidently say I wouldn’t be here without you or your blog. Thank you.
@dexendens - There seems to be a trend developing in this list. You, too, were among the very first RPers that I talked to, and you helped me set up my blog, as well as teaching me the basics of Tumblr etiquette and courtesy. Clearly, those paid off, and here we are, both equally questionably active! In the process, though, I made an awesome and interesting friend, and met a writer who I’d gladly recommend to anyone looking for a Pacifica. Thank you, too.
@flannelandchill - Ah yes, finally, a (relatively) fresh face! With the sad lack of people RPing everyone’s favorite ginger lumberjack, it was such a surprise - and delight - to see you pop up some seven months ago! Ever since then, I’ve admired your take on Wendy, your dedication to her character and family (Manly Dan’s my favorite), as well as enjoyed the conversations we have, rare as they may be. Clearly, you’re a wonderful writer and friend, and I hope we get to talk more soon.
@goldendorito - It’s weird to think that I’ve known you for years, when in reality, it’s been less than one, but that’s just how it is with you, I guess. We talk nearly every day, and discuss everything from gender politics to the quality of Steven Universe memes, and your constant presence has made a tremendous difference in my life - and I can only hope I’ve done the same for you. Of course, none of this would’ve happened had I not adored your writing too. Honestly, you’re such a role model for me.
@grunkle-stud - There has never been someone to so accurately capture the essence of Stanley Pines as Bonesy - both IC and OOC. On multiple occasions, I’ve legitimately seen a post on their blog, and thought to myself, “this is a canon quote, right?” only to find that it was not. From the angsty AF AUs to just general Stan assholery hiding a heart of gold, I can’t express how on-point your Stan is. You’ve taught me so much, and I’m proud to be a part of the Peach Wrangler’s big happy family.
@llamanorthwest - Tots, you’re one of the few blogs on this list that’s younger than I am, and I have to say that it’s been a pleasure to watch you grow, learn, and improve as a writer, and, more recently, as a person. From the group chat to the dash, it’s been a constant pleasure to see you around, whether you’re being sweet as sugar or salty as the ocean. It’s a real shame that we haven’t been able to interact as much as I’d like yet (it’s my fault), and I hope to remedy that in the near future.
@pine-dexter - Ah yes, Jenn: another very close friend, who has represented so many things at different points in my RP career. From an idol, to a mentor, to a shoulder to cry on, to equals and sharers in everything from memes to salt. I’d compare our relationship to Dipper and Ford’s from our personal headcanons, especially considering how our conversations tend to seamlessly shift from IC to OOC on the regular, but that feels a bit on the nose. Regardless, you’re the best.
@pirelien - When first making my blog, my original goal was not to become shipping trash. Sure, I would be open to ideas and exploring relationships if they came up naturally, but it wasn’t my prime directive. Then I met this Pacifica blog and that all changed. For some reason, our muses really clicked for me, and I was filled with the urge to make our muses kiss, to which you happily obliged. In doing so, though, I met a delightful, friendly person, and I’ll never regret sending that first meme.
@rethink-everything - And here we have the other person who successfully dragged right down into the depths of ship hell. I didn’t even mean to do so, at first. I just wanted to interact with a cool as hell Wendy. But then, things just... developed, and I found my muse’s feelings for Wendy bubbling up again, and I knew it had to be done. Months later, and here we still are, obsessing over our two eggs ‘til the very end. It was a pleasure to meet you, and I look forward to making an omelet soon ;)
@starrypsychic - Andy, or Lando, you’re quite honestly one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and I think you have a real talent for building characters. What I mean by that is that you somehow managed to take a widely popular character among the fandom, whose portrayal I tend not to find too interesting in the first place, and make him your own. You made him funny and depressing and realistic and relatable*, and in the process made me fall in love with him (and you).
@sparklesandstarsandstuff - My twin! We might as well be family, we’ve been close friends for so long, and I’ve loved every second of it. From unconditional love and support, to fun times memeing and watching shows together, you’re honestly everything I’d hope for in a sibling. I know we sometimes fall out of contact for a while, and that’s entirely my fault, but you’re always right there when I come back, ready to love me with open arms. Can’t express how thankful I am for you, twin.
@wetheremnants - I know you from your original Bill blog, and then followed you to your Bucky, and then was elated when I saw that you were remaking Bill not too long ago. I did notice, though, that a couple of things have remained consistent across all three blogs - your excellent writing, and of course, the generous, amazing mun. You’re someone I look up to and admire, and it always disheartens me to see you down on yourself, since your writing possesses quality I can attest to.
@widdleolgideongleeful - To round off the list for the year, we’ve got yet another familiar face, someone I looked up to before my RP days, and someone who’s taught me a lot about how to create and write interesting, good characters. This person’s dedication to their character was an inspiration, and contributed a lot to how I write my own Dipper. A hilarious, intelligent, and supportive friend, Booboo is someone I owe a lot of who I am today, at least in the context of Tumblr, to.
And with that, we should be just about wrapping things up! Thanks for sticking with me through my inactivity, y’all! As a resolution, I’ve decided to really motivate myself to come on here more and give people the attention they deserve. I hope you all have a prosperous year moving on, and considering how absolutely 2016 was overall for most of us, it shouldn’t be too hard a record to beat.

Quick Summer Squash & Tomato Sauté ♥
A simple-simple skillet sauté, an answer to the summer vegetables that pile up from the garden-grocery and appear in mounds in the corner-grocery. It's just barely cooked summer squash (for color, both green-skinned zucchini and sunny-colored yellow squash) with a pile of garlic and a little tomato. Low Carb. Very Weight Watchers Friendly. Not just vegan, Vegan Done Real. Naturally Gluten Free. Whole30 Friendly.
Holding out on you? Not intentionally! Way back in 2013, I concluded that this quick, summery vegetable sauté was just "too simple" for A Veggie Venture. But I kept making it, one summer after another. And five years later? I t-h-r-i-v-e on simple recipes! Maybe readers do too?
Call me a recipe minimalist: a funny description for someone who's been collecting and sharing recipes since she was about 10 years old, an unlikely orientation for someone who's called herself a food writer / food blogger since 2002.
But I find myself wanting fewer, not more, recipes. I want them to fit a 3x5 recipe card or easily commit to memory. I want them to call for ingredients that are easy to find and nearly always on hand. I want them to ebb and flow from meal to meal. And because of – well, this – I want my now 92-year old father who abhors anything "mushy" to not turn up his nose at more vegetables. (For the record, he has no idea how many vegetables and healthy calories I sneak in, thank you Green Smoothies.)
Quick Summer Squash Sauté definitely qualifies on all measures. Since 2013, I've made one skilletful after another, some times as a simple side for dinner but more often as bed for breakfast eggs. Once, on a warm, late-summer evening? I nestled smoked chops in the vegetables: so pretty, so seasonal, so wonderful.
I suppose you could call it a barely-cooked, one-skillet Ratatouille, minus the eggplant. It's especially pretty when made with two different kinds of summer squash, I'm partial to green-skinned zucchini and yellow-skinned yellow squash and the tiny red and yellow tomatoes our garden spits out from now until early fall, so sweet, I call them garden candy. If you have just-harvested garlic, all the better.
This recipe is so quick and easy that I'm adding it to a growing collection of easy summer recipes published all summer long ever since 2009 at Kitchen Parade, my food column. With a free Kitchen Parade e-mail subscription, you'll never miss a one!
RECIPE for QUICK SUMMER SQUASH & TOMATO SAUTÉ
Hands-on time: 10 minutes Time to table: 20 minutes Serves 4
Chop all the vegetables (except maybe the tomatoes) before beginning to cook, this will cook quick-quick!
1 tablespoon olive oil 5 cloves garlic, slivered 1/2 pound (225g) small- to medium-size zucchini, sliced in half moons 1/2 pound (225g) small- to medium-size yellow squash, sliced in half moons 1 cup cherry or grape or similar small tomatoes, halved or quartered Salt & pepper to taste but be generous Fresh herbs, chopped, think dill, basil, oregano & parsley
Heat the oil until shimmery on medium high in a large skillet, cast iron works, so does non-stick. Stir in the garlic and let cook, just barely for lots of garlic flavor, until golden for something warmer and more "cooked". Stir in the zucchini and yellow squash, coating with oil, and let cook, stirring occasionally just until barely cooked. Stir in the tomatoes, stir occasionally just until they begin to throw off their juices. Season generously with salt and pepper. Stir in fresh herbs, let cook just a minute or two, until the herbs are warm but not really "cooked".
Serve warm or at room temperature.
VARIATIONS: OH so MANY! PUT AN EGG ON TOP Fry some eggs (you can even use the same skillet, just move the veggies to a serving bowl or serving plate first) or poach some eggs (I use the Cook's Illustrated technique, How to Poach a Perfect Egg) or our recent favorite is soft-cooked eggs (recipe coming soon). Or! Use the back of a spoon to create shallow depressions in the vegetables and plop the eggs right in. Then bake in the oven at 350F/180C for 10 - 15 minutes. DRIZZLE SOMETHING MILKY ON TOP I've used several sauces, the Yogurt-Mint Sauce from Afghan Eggplant & Tomato Casserole (Borani Banjan) and the Buttermilk-Yogurt Sauce from Roasted Eggplant with Pomegranate and even this back-in-my-repertoire Buttermilk Garlic Salad Dressing, it's my "ranch" dressing and I make it over and over in one variation after another. VEGGIE HASH For something more akin to hash, cut the summer squash into small cubes. Small pieces are also the way to stretttttch vegetables among more people. HAPPY ADDITIONS & SUBSTITUTIONS Slivered onion or minced jalapeño or minced/cubed poblano (cook these by themselves, briefly, before adding the garlic). Okra and bell pepper (cut the same size as the summer squash, cook along with the summer squash). Olives (quartered, add near the end.) When summer tomatoes finally come in, cut up a whole tomato instead of the small tomatoes.
